RESUMEN
To evaluate the outcome of thalamotomies in patients with Parkinsonism. DESIGN: Retrospective study SETTING: Lahore General Hospital [only center in Pakistan where surgical treatment is offered for Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders]. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty four patients in which there were problems with medical treatment infectiveness, cost, reactions of side effects were operated upon by stereotactic technique during 1994,95. There were 3 male and one female. Maximum number of patients [45.83%] were between ages of 5l to 60 years. Big city residents were more [18 or 75%] as compared to patients from small towns. Left side was involved in 13[54%] cases. Lower limb involvement with upper limb involvement was there in 9 [37.5%]. Transient complications noticed included, confusion in 1 [4.1%], vomiting in 4.1%], and recurrence in 1[4.1%]. Operative results were excellent in 5 [20.83%] and good in 19 [79.16%] patient. Followup period has been from 6 to 18 months. CONCLUSIONS: Stereotactic technique offers a consistently uniform, reproducible, minimally invasive, safe method for placing destructive lesions. Clinically improvement is immediate, and long term. Side effects of AntiParkinsonism medicines can be avoided
