RESUMEN

A great immunological resemblance exists between the external eye and respiratory tract. Dryness lowers ocular resistance. Bromhexine gave excellent results in combating chest infection through augmentation of amount of bronchial secretion, being a bronchial mucolytic drug. We used bromhexine in treating dryness caused by Sjogren's syndrome and trachomatous cicatrisation in 100 eyes. Bromhexine proved to be effective in the majority of cases, but of very short duration. Cases were diagnosed and followed by quantitative rose bengal, and affirmed by Shirmer's test and B.U.T.

RESUMEN

In this study, we were concerned with defining the characteristics of the V.E.P. in fresh cases of optic neuritis and its response to treatment with steroids, and whether the residual abnormalities of optic neuritis can be differentiated from well established chronic multiple sclerosis.. The V.E.P. from stimulation of each eye was studied in 10 healthy control subjects and in 3 cases with known multiple sclerosis and 7 cases diagnosed clinically as optic neuritis. All the healthy subjects showed a prominent positive wave with a peak latency 100 +/- 3 m sec. The mean amplitude was 5.4 +/- 3 microvolts. In the affected eyes the V.E.R.. disappeared altogether. The major positive component reappeared 1 week after steroid treatment with a latency of 119 +/- 7 m sec and an amplitude 2 + 2 microvolts. The latency did not alter from this value 3 weeks after treatment, however the amplitude improved marginally over time. In affected eyes with multiple sclerosis the major positive component was 137 +/- 7 m sec and 3 + 1 microvolts respectively. Visual evoked potential can be of great help in excluding functional disorders like histria as a cause of sudden blindness

RESUMEN

Fourteen cases of diabetic macular oedema of the focal leaking type are included in this study. Selected cases showed more or less bilateral and symmetrical clinical conditions. For each, one eye was photocoagulated by red krypton laser and the other eye by green argon laser. Visual changes are studied either visual acuity or macular threshold. Photoocoagulation of diabetic macular oedema by red krypton laser proved to be preferable to that achieved by green argon laser

RESUMEN

Echography was performed on 14 eyes for suspected retinoblastoma. Three major criteria for the echographic diagnosis of retinoblastoma, these were the presence of intratumoral calcifications, normal axial length of the length of the eye with respect to age and a solid mass attached posteriorly. This study helps to demonstrate the importance of echography in the diagnosis of retinoblastoma and its differentiation from cuases of pseudoglioma, also in follow-up suspicous cases with early discovery of the expected tumours
