RESUMEN

Glaucoma is a serious disease which leads to permanent visual damage. Early detection is extremely needed to prevent glaucoma blindness. General physicians should be aware of different risk factors for glaucoma in order to pick up suspicious cases. This study was conducted in Ismailia primary care unites to detect different risk factors for glaucoma. Optic discs inspection by direct ophthalmoscopy and ocular tension measurement by Schoitz tonometry were our screening parameters. Suspicious cases of glaucoma were thoroughly investigated in the Ophthalmology Department-Suez Canal University. The study included 1028 eyes of 522 persons above 40 yrs old. Chronic glaucoma was diagnosed in 85eyes [8.3%]. The studied risk factors were: high myopia [13.1%], hypertension [10.7%] and diabetes mellitus [7.3%]

RESUMEN

A great immunological resemblance exists between the external eye and respiratory tract. Dryness lowers ocular resistance. Bromhexine gave excellent results in combating chest infection through augmentation of amount of bronchial secretion, being a bronchial mucolytic drug. We used bromhexine in treating dryness caused by Sjogren's syndrome and trachomatous cicatrisation in 100 eyes. Bromhexine proved to be effective in the majority of cases, but of very short duration. Cases were diagnosed and followed by quantitative rose bengal, and affirmed by Shirmer's test and B.U.T.

RESUMEN

To evaluate the role of immunological mechanisms in the etiology off primary pterygia, 20 cases of surgically excised primary pterygium presenting at various clinical stages were examined with morphological and immunohistochemical methods, and compared with normal conjunctiva excised from the nasal part of the limubs. B5-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue was stained with anti-bodies directed against T-cells, B-cells, macrophages, Langerhans cells, HLA-DR antigens and immunoglobulins. Increased numbers of dendritic cells variably expressing s-100 protein, HLA-DR antigens and/or the LN2-marker, were observed both in the epithelium and underlying stroma. In addition, the elastotically degenerated stroma contained variable numbers off KP1 + macrophages. T- and B- lymphocytes as well as immunoglobulin-containing plasma cells were generally inconspicuous
