RESUMEN

Introduction: Bell’s palsy is an acute peripheral facial neuropathy and is the most common cause of lower motor neuron facial palsy. Various treatment modalities including steroids, physiotherapy, antivirals have been described. We aimed to study the efficacy of electroacupuncture to modify and improve the muscle paralyses. Material and methods: The first twenty patients who were willing for the study were selected. Fourteen sittings of thirty minutes each were done with one chun silver needles and stimulation was electrical and the intensity was adjusted for de qi feeling for the patients. House-Brackmann Classification of Facial Function was used to categorize the patients before and after treatment. Improvement in the score of more than 1 was termed significant relief. Results: Out of the twenty patients 17 had significant improvement of power and three had mild improvement. Three patients had minimal bleeding in a few points which stopped with simple pressure. Watering of the eye stopped in all the cases. The majority of patients were satisfied according to partha patient satisfaction score. Conclusion: To conclude, electroacupuncture has a significant role in early paralytic phase of Bells palsy without many side effects.

RESUMEN

The implementation of yogic practices has proven benefits in both organic and psychological diseases. Forty-five women with anxiety selected by a random sampling method were divided into three groups. Experimental group I was subjected to asanas, relaxation and pranayama while Experimental group II was subjected to an integrated yoga module. The control group did not receive any intervention. Anxiety was measured by Taylor's Manifest Anxiety Scale before and after treatment. Frustration was measured through Reaction to Frustration Scale. All data were spread in an Excel sheet to be analysed with SPSS 16 software using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Selected yoga and asanas decreased anxiety and frustration scores but treatment with an integrated yoga module resulted in significant reduction of anxiety and frustration. To conclude, the practice of asanas and yoga decreased anxiety in women, and yoga as an integrated module significantly improved anxiety scores in young women with proven anxiety without any ill effects.

We report a very old geriatric case for hemiarthroplasty of the right hip. A 105-year-old patient with no obvious medical illness except senile emphysema reported to us for right hemiarthroplasty of the hip. An intrathecal low-dose bupivacaine with fentanyl was used. The anesthetic considerations are discussed. The case is presented for its extreme old age and the importance of living mobile whatever is the life span.

RESUMEN

Background: Extra gastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGIST) are uncommon compared to their gastrointestinal counterparts. EGISTs involve omentum, mesentery, retroperitoneum, pancreas, and pelvis. Materials and Methods: Ten EGISTs were analyzed in this study from January 1995 to November 2011. They were analyzed with respect to clinical features, imageological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings. The immunohistochemical stains used were Smooth muscle actin (SMA), Desmin, S-100 protein, CD34 and CD-117. Results: There was slight female preponderance with wide age range. Four of the tumors were in retroperitoneum, three in mesentery, and two in omentum and one in pelvis. Histopathologically majority were spindle cell tumors. Immunohistochemically CD117 was consistently positive followed by CD34. Smooth muscle actin was positive in eight cases, S-100 protein and desmin were positive in two cases each. Conclusion: EGISTs are rare and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the mesenchymal tumors and immunohistochemistry helps to confirm the diagnosis. Further study with better follow-up is desired to characterize these uncommon tumors.

RESUMEN

Breast feeding is the best way to start life. Initiation of breastfeeding is delayed in caesarean section (CS) babies. We studied the feasibility of early initiation of breastfeeds in newborns in the immediate post delivery period when the suckling reflex is powerful. Fifty consecutive mothers with elective or emergency CS, admitted to Government District Headquarters Hospital, Kumbakonam, South India, were taken up for the prospective study. All deliveries were done under intrathecal anaesthesia and babies were fed in one minute. Forty eight out of 50 babies (98%) sucked immediately. We conclude that early initiation of breast feeding is possible and successful before uterine closure in operative deliveries.

RESUMEN

The two most popular and extensively-used discrete models of population growth display the generic bifurcation structure of a hierarchy of period- doubling sequence to chaos with increasing growth rates. In this paper we show that these two models, though they belong to a general class of one-dimensional maps, show very different dynamics when important ecological processes such as immigration and emigration/depletion, are considered. It is important that ecologists recognize the differences between these models before using them to describe their data—or develop optimization strategies—based on these models.
