RESUMEN

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are an uncommon group of neoplasms. The visceral pleura is the most common site of origin of these tumors. The colonic mesentery is an unusual site of origin of SFTs. A pre-operative diagnosis of SFT is challenging as there are no pathognomonic clinical or radiological signs. Most patients reported thus far were diagnosed post-operatively with the aid of immunohistochemical markers. Complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice for SFTs. Recurrences are uncommon. However, they can occasionally show aggressive behavior. In this report, we describe two cases of rare colonic mesentery SFTs.

RESUMEN

Choriocarcinoma occurs mainly in the gonads, but an extragonadal origin has been reported, albeit infrequently. Primary hepatic choriocarcinoma (PHC) is a rare malignancy, with only 11 cases reported. Most cases reported were in males, with none reported in pregnant females. A 23-year-old primigravida presented with a large liver lesion involving the right lobe of the liver at 28 weeks of pregnancy. Preoperative imaging was suggestive of hepatocellular carcinoma. She underwent a non-anatomical resection of the liver lesion. Surprisingly, her postoperative histopathology revealed a diagnosis of PHC. Her blood workup showed elevated beta human chorionic gonadotrophin. She underwent a termination of her pregnancy at 32 weeks. Before initiating adjuvant chemotherapy four weeks after surgery, a whole-body PET scan revealed multiple bi-lobar liver and pelvic deposits. After a multidisciplinary team discussion, she was started on adjuvant chemotherapy. She is currently under regular follow-up, seven months post-surgery. PHC, one of the vascular lesions of the liver, poses a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, warranting a multidisciplinary approach.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Pancytopenia is characterized by a decrease in the red blood cells, white blood cells along with the platelet count below the normal levels. It can be due to a number of pathologic mechanisms, depending on the geographic location. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in the management of pancytopenia. There are very few studies regarding the clinic-pathological profile of such patients. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken at NRI General Hospital, Chinakakani. All eligible participants more than 13 years of age were included. Data collection was done from August 2016 to August 2018. A thorough history taking along with clinical examination and laboratory investigations were performed among the study population. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 13. Results: The most common finding suggestive of etiology was megaloblastic anemia at 38.4%, which was more common among females. Aplastic anemia was the second most common finding at 24.6%. Other diagnoses included hypersplenism, myelodysplastic syndrome and acute leukemia. Fever and pallor were the most common presenting symptoms. Blood examinations demonstrated anisopoikilocytosis, hypersegmented neutrophils, erythroblasts, macrocytes and reticulocytes, which were found in differing proportions in the various etiological diagnoses. Conclusion: It is noteworthy that megaloblastic anemia, a reversible condition, is common in India compared to the higher occurrence of aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome in developed Vijaya Kumar Vasa, Sadhna Sharma, Rakesh Nukasani, Srivani Gulleli, Phani Kumar Reddy. A study of clinical and etiological profiles of patients presenting with Pancytopenia in NRI General Hospital. IAIM, 2019; 6(2): 114-120. Page 115 nations. Clinical alertness and suspicion can assure early diagnoses and treatment can prevent complications and reduce the burden. The need for more standard management protocols is immediate.

RESUMEN

Stress and emotion are associated with several illnesses from headaches to heart diseases and immune deficiencies to central nervous system. Terminalia arjuna has been referred as traditional Indian medicine for several ailments. The present study aimed to elucidate the effect of T. arjuna bark extract (TA) against picrotoxin-induced anxiety. Forty two male Balb/c mice were randomly divided into six experimental groups (n = 7): control, diazepam (1.5 mg·kg), picrotoxin (1 mg·kg) and three TA treatemt groups (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg). Behavioral paradigms and PCR studies were performed to determine the effect of TA against picrotoxin-induced anxiety. The results showed that TA supplementation increased locomotion towards open arm (EPM) and illuminated area (light-dark box test), and increased rearing frequency (open field test) in a dose dependent manner, compared to picrotoxin (P < 0.05). Furthermore, TA increased number of licks and shocks in Vogel's conflict. PCR studies showed an up-regulation of several genes, such as BDNF, IP, DL, CREB, GABA, SOD, GPx, and GR in TA administered groups. In conclusion, alcoholic extract of TA bark showed protective activity against picrotoxin in mice by modulation of genes related to synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitters, and antioxidant enzymes.

RESUMEN

Rhinosporidiosis usually affects the mucous membrane of nose and conjunctiva, less frequently lacrimal sac, urethra, and skin. This is a case presentation of rare lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis for the first time reported from the state of Tripura in North East India. Diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis is usually made by routine histological examination and treatment is surgical excision. It needs follow up as recurrence is common.

RESUMEN

Novel Pyrimidines were prepared by the condensation of Chalcones of 4 -piperazine acetophenone with guanidine HC1. The structures of the synthesized compounds RP 1-5 were assigned on the basis of Elemental analysis, IR, [1]H NMR and Mass spectroscopy. These compounds were also screened for antihistaminic activity. The recorded% of histamine inhibition showed significant antihistaminic activity when compared to the reference antihistaminic drug mepiramine
