[Use of locking plate in combination with dynamic compression plate for repair of tibial fracture in a young horse]

Grade 1 open spiral fracture of left tibia in a 1.5 year-old horse was treated using a combination of 4.5 mm locking compression plate [LCP] and a dynamic compression plate applied in a neutralization manner. The open wound was managed postoperatively by regular dressing and lavage. Radiograph at 24 days post-treatment revealed callus formation and at two months complete bridging callus was observed. At the end of six months complete healing of the fracture with functional recovery of the limb was observed

Adiponectin levels in serum of women with pre-eclampsia

Adiponectin has profound insulin-sensitizing, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic effects. However, reports of the role of adiponectin in pre-eclampsia are conflicting. This study in Egypt investigated the association between serum adiponectin levels and pre-eclampsia and between adiponectin levels and some clinical and hormonal parameters. A sample of 60 pregnant women in the third trimester were divided into 3 equal groups: normal pregnancy, mild pre-eclampsia and severe pre-eclampsia. Serum adiponectin levels in pre-eclamptic women were significantly higher than in normal pregnant women and the increase was more marked in cases of severe pre-eclampsia. There was a significant negative correlation between adiponectin levels and arterial blood pressure in all groups. However, there was no correlation between serum adiponectin and proteinuriaorestradiol and progesterone levels. The results support the theory that adiponectin might be part of a feedback mechanism improving insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular health in pre-eclamptic patients

effect of cimetidine on sulfamethazine elimination in rabbits

Six adult white New Zealand rabbits received the following treatments: Sulphamethazine [SMZ] 80 mg/Kg alone and SMZ 80 mg/Kg after pretreatment with Cimetidine 25 mg/Kg in a crossover manner; both drugs were given i.p. There were no changes in half-life[t 1/2], area under the curve [AUC] of SMZ, AUC of N-acetylsulphamethazine [NSMZ], clearance [Cl] and volume of distributions [Vd] of SMZ after the the administration of cimetidine. Plasma concentration-time curves for SMZ alone and after treatment with cimetidine were superimposable. It is concluded that cimetidine has no effect on SMZ elimination. Since SMZ is mainly eliminated by metabolism through N-acetyltransferase, the activity of this enzyme is thus not inhibited by concurrent administration of cimetidine with SMZ. Due to similarity between rabbit and man in N-acetyltransferase both in specificity for certain substrates and the mode of inheritance, it is suggested that concurrent administration of cimetidine with any of the drugs which are predominantly metabolised by this enzyme need no dose modification of such drugs but further investigation on man is needed

Protection of bone marrow by acetylsalicylic acid in cyclophosphamide treated rabbits

Six white Newzealand rabbits received the following treatment in crossover manner. Single dose of cyclophosphamid [CP] 50 mg/kg intraperitoneally, 300 mg/kg acetylsalicylic acid [ASA] intramuscularly for four days followed by 50 mg/kg CP intraperitoneally. Treatment with CP alone was associated with marked reduction of white cell count which was maximal on the second day. Such depression does not occur when the rabbits were pretreated with ASA. The finding in this work propond the use of ASA and probably other prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors [PGIs]as an adjuvant to cytotoxic drug therapy to offset bone marrow toxicity

Acetylation in Iraqi population

The acetylation in Iraqi population was studied in 57 volunteers. Each volunteer received 50 mg dapsone orally, and the concentrations of dapsone and it's metabolite monoacetyl- dapson were estimated by a thin layer chromatographic technique. 58% were slow acetylators, 35% were rapid acetylators and 7% were intermediate acetylators
