RESUMEN

Abstract The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Moringa olifera on the growth and gut health of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The feed having 30% crude protein was prepared as an experimental diet with 4%, 8% and 10% M. olifera leaf supplementation, respectively. The control diet was devoid of M. olifera leaves. The 10 weeks feeding trial was carried out on 60 fish in aquaria. Fish was fed @ 3% of body weight twice a day. Diet with the high level of inclusion of M. olifera leaves significantly increased the growth rate, Survival Rate (SR), Specific Growth Rate (SGR) and Feed Conversion Efficiency (FCE) in all treatment groups compared to the control group. Similarly, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) gradually decreased and found highly-significant. To check the gut health of the Tilapia, random samples were selected and dissected. Nutrient agar was used as culture media to check the growth of bacteria. Pour Plate Method was used for viable colonies count by colony counter. Through staining method, the different bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were identify abundantly in the intestine of control diet fish but less number present in treatment diets groups. These results showed that M. olifera leaves up to 10% of dietary protein can be used for Nile tilapia for significant growth and healthy gut microbiota of fish.

Abstract This study explores the antioxidant activity, phytochemical screening, total phenolic and flavonoids contents in the extracts of four locally available weeds plants namely Convolvulus arvensis, Chenopodium murale, Avena fatua and Phalaris minor with different solvents. The antioxidant activities of these extracts were determined via various in-vitro methods such as total antioxidant activity (TAA), reducing power (RP), DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays. Phytochemical screening was performed both qualitatively as well as quantitatively. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were determined through Folin- Ciocalteu reagent and aluminium chloride methods respectively. Methanol-chloroform solvent showed the presence of a high amount of TPC in milligram of gallic acid equivalent per gram of dry weight (mg of GAE/g of DW) in the extracts of all weeds. Their descending sequence was Avena fatua (74.09) Phalaris minor (65.66) Chenopodium murale (64.04) Convolvulus arvensis (61.905), while, chloroform solvent found to be best solvent for the extraction of TFC. Methanol-chloroform solvent was also found to be best solvent for TAA (Total antioxidant activity assay) which showed values in milligram of ascorbic acid equivalent per gram of dry weight (mg of AAE /g of DW), for DPPH scavenging activity, reducing power (antioxidant activity) and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity. Phytochemical screening indicated the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and glycosides in these weeds.

Background: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a life-threatening condition that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. However, some patients with ACS may have normal levels of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn), a biomarker of myocardial injury, at presentation. This study aimed to compare the characteristics and outcomes of ACS patients with normal and elevated hs-cTn levels using different assays and thresholds. Material & Methods: This 2-year retrospective observational study was conducted in Bangladesh, using data from hospital records of 420 suspected ACS patients. Patients were divided into two groups based on their Hs-Troponin levels, with group 1 having 60 patients with Hs-Troponin ?0.014 ug/L, and group 2 having 360 patients with Hs-Troponin >0.014 ug/L. Patients less than 18 years old and those with incomplete records were excluded. Ethical approval was obtained, and SPSS v.25 was used for analysis. Results: Group 1 had a significantly younger mean age of 41.8±14.3 compared to Group 2’s mean age of 68.4±12.6, with a p-value less than 0.001. Group 2 had a higher percentage of male patients (70.56%) compared to Group 1 (31.67%), with a p-value of less than 0.01. Group 2 had a significantly higher mean heart rate of 80.18±20.64 beats per minute compared to Group 1’s mean heart rate of 71.02±12.21, with a p-value less than 0.001. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, BMI, history of smoking, history of AMI, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Group 1 had a significantly lower percentage of patients with hypercholesterolemia (55.00%), but a higher percentage of patients with a history of ACS (25.00%), and a family history of CAD (70.00%) compared to Group 2, with p-values less than 0.001. Group 2 had a significantly higher percentage of patients with known renal failure (21.67%) compared to Group 1 (1.67%), with a p-value less than 0.001. Creatinine levels were significantly higher in Group 2 (98±53 µmol/L) compared to Group 1 (76±17 µmol/L) with a p-value of less than 0.001, and eGFR was significantly lower in Group 2 (76±27 mL/min/1.73 m2) compared to Group 1 (97±23 mL/min/1.73 m2) with a p-value of less than 0.001. The cardiac Troponin T (cTnT) levels were significantly higher in Group 2 (0.28±1.68 ug/L) compared to Group 1 (0.01±0.01 ug/L) with a p-value of less than 0.001, indicating worse kidney function and cardiac damage in Group 2 compared to Group 1. Conclusion: The study found that very few patients presenting with ACS symptoms had normal Hs-Troponin levels, and ultimate diagnosis proved that they did not have ACS, indicating the usability of Hs-Troponin as a biomarker for ACS. Significant differences were observed in age, gender, heart rate, hypercholesterolemia, family history of ACS, family history of CAD, and renal failure between the two groups. The study also found a consistent association between elevated creatinine levels and lower eGFR with higher Hs-Troponin levels.

RESUMEN

@#Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their parents require support from the community, and could profit from volunteer work involving the family. At the same time, university students demonstrate a high willingness to volunteer in community initiatives such as work involving children with ASD. This study aims to examine the relationship between ASD knowledge and the motivation to volunteer among university students. Students (N=150) from a private university in the Klang Valley, Malaysia, participated in this study. Instruments utilized in this study were the Stone Autism Survey and Volunteer Functions Inventory. The results indicated that a higher level of ASD knowledge was the strongest predictor of higher motivation to volunteer after adjusting for relevant demographic factors and exposure to ASD children. Meanwhile, female and Hindu participants reported a significantly higher motivation to volunteer. This study emphasizes the need to increase factual knowledge about ASD among university students, and any effort to encourage students to volunteer in helping individuals with ASD should include knowledge sharing about this population.

RESUMEN

Objective: To carry out the genetic characterization and evolutionary analysis of three avian orthoavulavirus 1 (AOAV-1) isolates from poultry workers with respiratory symptoms. Methods: Using Illumina MiSeq, whole-genome sequencing was carried out to assess the evolutionary dynamics of three AOAV-1 isolates. A phylogenetic and comparative analysis of all coding genes was done using bioinformatics tools. Results: Phylogenetic analysis and genetic distance estimation suggested a close relationship among human- and avian-originated velogenic strains of genotype XIII, sub-genotype XIII.2.1. Several substitutions in the significant structural and biological motifs were exclusively identified in the human-originated strains. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first report of a velogenic AOAV-1 isolate from natural infection of the human upper respiratory tract. Our findings highlight the evolution and zoonotic potential of velogenic AOAV-1 in a disease endemic setting.

RESUMEN

Objective@#Alzheimer’s disease is a popular neurodegenerative disorder which is growing in the elderly people. Exposure to environmental pollutant like aluminum could trigger or accelerate its involved mechanisms like tau phosphorylation. The current study will evaluate the effect of alone or co-administration of Citicoline or/and magnesium on the aluminum chloride induced memory impairment. @*Methods@#Male albino mice were randomly divided into different groups (n = 7). Memory impairment was induced via orally administration of 300 mg/kg Aluminum Chloride for 28 days. Based on respective group, animals received 100, 250, 500 mg/kg of Citicoline or 50, 100, 150 mg/kg of Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), intraperitoneally. In co-administration, 50 mg/kg of MgSO4 injected concomitantly with 100, 250, or 500 mg/kg of Citicoline. Rivastigmine (2 mg/kg intraperitoneally) was used as a positive control. Memory was evaluated using the Object Recognition Task (ORT) and Passive Avoidance Test (PAT). @*Results@#The studied doses of Citicoline or MgSO4 when administered individually showed significant increase in the discrimination index in ORT and latency time in the PAT compared to the Aluminium chloride (AlCl3) treated group. Concomitant injection of 50 mg/kg MgSO4 with the different doses of Citicoline strongly increased the above indices values in comparison to each alone. @*Conclusion@#The findings show, individual administration of Citicoline or MgSO4 inverted the AlCl3-induced memory impairment in a dose independent manner. The addition of MgSO4 to the Citicoline showed a synergistic effect in the PAT and likely additive effect in the ORT.

RESUMEN

Objective@#Diabetes mellitus is associated with cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown that citicoline and benfotiamine can improve memory and learning through different mechanism of actions. The aim of this study was to compare the individual effects of benfotiamine (100, 200, 300 mg/kg) and citicoline (50, 100, 250, 500 mg/kg, gavage) and their co-administration on memory impairments in diabetic mice. @*Methods@#Diabetes was induced by a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ, 140 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) and benfotiamine and/or citicoline were administered for three weeks. Memory was evaluated using the object recognition task (ORT) and passive avoidance test (PAT). @*Results@#Results from ORT shows that citicoline at 50, 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg and benfotiamine at 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg and their combination (benfotiamine at 100 mg/kg added to citicoline at 50, 100, and 250 mg/kg) are equally effective in reversing the memory loss induced by STZ (p < 0.001). PAT results demonstrate that citicoline at 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg and benfotiamine at above doses did not improve the latency time when administered separately, but benfotiamine at a fixed dose of 100 mg/kg in the presence of citicoline at 50, 100, and 250 mg/kg increased the latency time and improved memory significantly. @*Conclusion@#In conclusion, in PAT, co-administration of benfotiamine and citicoline was more effective than either alone in improving memory. Regarding ORT, although benfotiamine added to citicoline improved memory notably, the difference between combination therapy and single-drug therapy was not considerable.

RESUMEN

Aim:To study the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Terminalia chebulain rats.Study Design:Hyperlipidemia was induced by administering doxorubicin and the effect of Terminalia chebulawas studied in male and female rats.Methodology:Three doses of hydroalcoholic extract of Terminalia chebula(0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 gm/kg, body weight, per orally for 28 days) was tested against the doxorubicin (0.25 mg/kg, intra-peritoneal, 6 doses for 12 days) in male and female rats. Serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL-cholesterol) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-cholesterol) were estimated. The antioxidant effect was determined by estimating the serum peroxidation levels. The result of the data was analyzed statistically by One-way Anova followed by Bonferroni comparison test. p<0.05 was considered to indicate the significance of the results. Results and Discussion: The data indicated that a dose-dependent significant (p<0.05) reversal was observed in the doxorubicin-induced elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol and diminished HDL-cholesterol upon treatment with Terminalia chebulain male rats. In the female rats, only the highest tested doseof Terminalia chebula(1 gm/kg) produced the inhibitory effect in the elevated lipid levels without affecting significantly the HDL-cholesterol activity. Further, when Terminalia chebulawas tested separately at 0.5 g before and after the administration of doxorubicin, a significant inhibition was observed in the post treatment in both sexes. Serum lipid peroxidation was found to be significantly (p<0.05) reduced by the extract compared to the doxorubicin group. Conclusion:The results suggest that Terminalia chebulaextract might have the potential to reduce doxorubicin-induced hyperlipidemic complications if administered together or after thedoxorubicin therapy

RESUMEN

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a form of spondylitis in which spine is affected primarily along with otherjoints. The vertebrae fuse together and form a rigid structure. Individuals with AS are also positive for humanleukocyte antigen (HLA) B-27. One hundred and eighty-three symptomatic patients of AS were used in thestudy. Sequence-specific priming (SSP) PCR technique was used to detect the HLA B-27 specific allele. Thisstudy showed (out of 183 suspected cases, 45 cases were detected positive with HLA B-27 allele, while theremaining 138 were negative) that the positivity rate for AS with HLA B-27 allele is less. In 183 cases, 63were females, whereas 7 cases were positive and 56 negative, whereas 38 cases were positive for male and 82cases were negative. When sample was analyzed in term of age groups, it was found that out of 45 positivesamples, the positivity rate was maximum, i.e., 57.14% in the patient above 37 years of age. Furthermore, itwas observed that the males above 30 years are more prone to develop AS with HLA B27 specific allele. Forthe diagnosis of AS, conventional PCR technology is a promising diagnostic method and can be considered asan important tool along with other diagnostics parameters.

RESUMEN

Background: There is an increasing prevalence of obesity globally which is associated with Non Communicable Diseases. As this trend continues even in UAE we decided to focus on determining the prevalence of obesity among adults in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), UAE.Methods: This was a retrospective observational study done in adults between the age group of 18 to 77 years using convenience sampling technique in 544 subjects. Anthropometric, bio chemical, clinical and demographic data was collected by direct interview for four consecutive years, i.e. from 2013 to 2016. Body Mass Index (BMI) was analyzed to classify individuals as overweight (BMI 25.0-29.9kg/m²), Obese grade I (BMI 30.0-34.9kg/m²), Obese grade II (BMI 35.0-39.9kg/m²) and obese grade III (BMI > 40.0kg/m²).Results: Data was obtained from 544 subjects and considered for analysis. Our results showed that the mean age of the study population was 39.29±13.43 years, the mean weight was 75.35±15.65 kilograms and the mean BMI was 27.62±5.43kg/m2. A total of 67.6% of the study population was either overweight or obese. The prevalence of overweight is 36.2% followed by obesity prevalence of 31.4% of which 22.8% were categorized as Grade I obese, 5.5% Grade II obese and 3.1% Grade III obese. We found that higher proportions of males were in overweight and obese category compared to females. Conclusions: The results derived from our study shows that obesity and overweight are widespread among Ras al khaimah population with the obesity prevalence of 31.4%. Hence, policy makers should focus on preparing national nutritional strategies and implement protocols to overcome this burden by giving practical solutions.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Morous Alba, known as white mulberry contains many oxidative flavonoids, widely used in the treatment of many diseases like hyperglycemia, inflammation, fever and cancer. In the present study we investigated the interaction of extracted flavonoids from Iranian Morus Alba leaves with DNA as a main target for anticancer drugs. Various spectroscopic techniques (UV/Vis, CD and Fluorescence Spectroscopy) were used to detect the interaction. In vivo studies also were done to confirm the effectiveness of the extracted flavonoids. The spectroscopic results showed that the extracted flavonoids bind to DNA especially to the sugar-phosphate backbone and making DNA conformational changes upon this binding. Experiments on the cancerous mice with solid tumors indicated that the treatment of mice with these extracted flavonoids increased significantly the life span but they did not have any effects on the tumor size reduction. These data suggest that Morus Alba flavonoids may use as an effective natural anticancer drug in the near future.

RESUMEN

Objective: To determine the success [flap survival as a whole without necrosis or dehiscence up to two months as judged clinically] of distally based medial hemisoleus muscle flap for the coverage of distal tibial defects

Study Design: Case series

Place and Duration of Study: Jinnah Burn and Reconstructive Surgery Centre, AIMC, Lahore, from July 2014 to July 2017

Methodology: Patients with middle and distal third tibial defects were enrolled and stratified according to the site of the wound in middle or distal third of tibia. Soft tissue coverage was provided with distally based medial hemisoleus muscle flap on which split thickness skin graft was applied. Postoperatively, patients were followed-up after one week of discharge and then fortnightly for at least 2 months. Outcome variable was taken as flap success

Results: Out of 37 cases, flap was successful in 33 patients as complete flap survived with primary wound healing. Partial flap necrosis without dehiscence was seen in 3 cases and partial necrosis of flap with dehiscence in only one case that required another surgery for the defect. Complete flap loss was not seen in any case

Conclusion: Distally based medial hemisoleus muscle flap is reliable coverage option for middle and distal third of tibial defects

RESUMEN

Hypertension is one of cardiovascular disease that is not sufficiently prevented and controlled at both hospital and community levels. Hypertension resulted in significant morbidity and mortality. The benz-imidazole ring is very important pharmacophore in modern drug discovery. The substituted benzimidazoles are the important for medicinal research. Researchers have reported that substituted Benzimidazoles are the structural isosteres of nucleotides, and easily allow them to interact with the different biopolymers, possess pharmacological activity especially antihypertensive activity. Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists/Blockers [ARBs] compete with angiotensin II at the receptor site and block the contractile effect of angiotensin II in all vascular smooth muscles. Among all Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists/Blockers [ARBs], Telmisartan, Milfasartan and many others have benzimidazole ring in their structure. In this study Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists/Blockers [ARBs] have been prepared. Synthesized compounds were characterized by physical data and FTIR spectroscopic technique. Synthesized compounds studied were finally screened for their antihypertensive activity by tail cuff method of measurement of blood pressure by NIBP apparatus [None Invasive Blood Pressure] using Chart 5.0 software. The compounds synthesized were 2-[3-nitrophenyl]-1Hbenzimidazole [1a], 3-[1H benzimidazol-2-yl]aniline [1b] and 5-[1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]-2-methoxyphenol [1c]. The synthesized compounds have shown antihypertensive activity by taking Losartan as lead compound

RESUMEN

Objective: To compare the corneal endothelial cell density in patients of Pseudoexfoliation syndrome [PXS] with normal healthy controls. Study Design: Cross sectional comparative. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology, Rawalpindi from Mar 2016 to Jan 2017

Patients and Methods: Patients of PXS and healthy subjects of both genders between ages of 40 and 50 years, with best corrected visual acuity of 6/6 on snellen visual acuity chart were included in the study. All the participants including controls and PXS patients were subjected to ophthalmic clinical examination including corrected distance visual acuity, slit lamp examination by the single trainee researcher to exclude bias. Participants in both groups were evaluated for corneal endothelial cell density [ECD] by using non-contact, TOPCON SP 3000P Specular microscope. Sampling bias was eliminated by analyzing 100 cells in the center of each specular microscope photograph and mean of three readings was analyzed

Results: Both the groups were similar with respect to gender and age. In our study sample there were 29 [58%] males in PXS group and 24 [48%] males in control group with no statistical significant [p-value > 0.05] difference between gender distributions of both groups. The mean age of the PXS group was 46.34 +/- 2.932 years, and in control group was 45.54 +/- 2.887 years [p-value >0.05]. The mean value of ECD was found to be 2021.548 +/- 528.142 cells/mm2 in PXS patients and the mean value of ECD in healthy subjects was noted to be 2772.692 +/- 383.395 cells/mm2, showing significantly lower ECD in PXS cases. Similarly, significantly higher number of cases 22 [44%] had CED <2000 in PXS as compared to normal healthy subjects

Conclusion: Corneal endothelial cell density decreases in patients of pseudoexfoliation syndrome and this must be considered while planning any intraocular surgery including cataract extraction

RESUMEN

Objective: To compare mean plasma homocysteine [HCY] levels [measured in umol/L] of normal population with patients having pseudoexfoliation syndrome [PXS]. Study Design: Cross sectional comparative study. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology, Rawalpindi, from May 2016 to Apr 2017

Patients and Methods: In this study 60 patients of PXS and 60 healthy subjects of both genders between ages of 40 and 50 years, with best corrected visual acuity of 6/6 on snellen visual acuity chart were included. All the participants were subjected to ophthalmic clinical examination including corrected distance visual acuity and slit lamp examination. Participants in both groups were evaluated for plasma homocysteine levels, by collection into a heparinized tube and later transferred in ice blocks. The samples were centrifuged at 4000 rpm for 5 minutes and stored at -20°C until the biochemical assay. HCY levels were determined by high performance liquid chromatography [HPLC]

Results: Total 120 participants of both groups were similar with respect to gender and age [p-value>0.05]. There were 36 [60%] males and 24 [40%] females in PXS group and in control group there were 29 [48.3%] males and 31 [51.7%] females. The mean age of PXS group was 44.68 +/- 3.234 years and for healthy control group it was 45.0 +/- 3.13 years. The comparison of homocysteine level between healthy controls and PXS patients showed a highly significant [p-value<0.01] difference between both groups. The mean homocysteine level was [32.14 +/- 14.33] in PXS group as compared to healthy controls [14.41 +/- 4.51]. The comparison of proportions of homocysteinemia showed that the rate of homocysteinemia was significantly [p-value<0.05] greater among patients of PXS. There were 24 [40%] participants in healthy control group who had homocysteinemia in comparison with 58 [96.67%] patients who had homocysteinemia among PXS group

Conclusion: Plasma HCY levels were raised in patients of pseudoexfoliation syndrome as compared to normal population, hence these patients may be considered for further systemic investigations by a medical specialist
