RESUMEN

Objectives: The present study analyzed the reciprocal relationships between four common pediatric ophthalmic diseases (i.e., hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus) and attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Methods: This study enrolled 86,028 children with ADHD and 1,798,673 children without ADHD in the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database who were born at any time from 2004 to 2017. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the bidirectional relationships of the four ophthalmic diseases with ADHD in children after adjusting for age, sex, and gestational age at birth. Survival curves for time-to-event variables were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test was used to compare the curves. Results: The results indicated that ADHD significantly predicted the occurrence of hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus. Furthermore, hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus significantly predicted the occurrence of ADHD. The time between enrollment and ADHD diagnosis was shorter for patients with ophthalmic diseases than for the control group, and the time between enrollment and ophthalmic disease diagnosis was also shorter for ADHD patients than for the control group. Sex differences were found in the associations between ADHD and ophthalmic diseases. Conclusion: Clinicians should monitor children with ADHD for hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus to ensure appropriate treatment, and vice versa.

RESUMEN

Background@#Though protective levels of neonatal SARS-CoV2 IgG still warrant further studies, maternal antibodies from COVID-19 vaccination may be the key to neonatal protection against COVID-19 related complications. This study aimed to correlate SARS-CoV2 IgG titers of term newborns delivered to fully vaccinated/boosted mothers with the time of dose completion to delivery and the type of COVID-19 vaccine received by the mothers.@*Methodology@#A single center prospective cohort study that utilized CLIA Anti-S-RBD IgG determination in cord blood was done. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U Test were used to determine significant differences between IgG titers from vaccine types and groups as to trimester when COVID-19 dose was completed. Spearman’s rank was used to determine the correlation between IgG levels and interval of dose completion to delivery.@*Results@#All 177 newborns enrolled in the study had reactive results (> 1 AU/ml) regardless of vaccine type received and trimester of maternal vaccination completion. The highest titers recorded per group was 19,340 AU/ml from the booster group and 5,960 AU/ml from the primary series group. The mRNA vaccinated group exhibited higher titers compared to other vaccine types regardless of the trimester completion for both groups.@*Conclusions@#A significant difference between IgG levels showed that higher titers were noted in the booster group compared to the primary series group across all trimesters. There was also a significant correlation between titer levels and time of dose completion to delivery with higher titers associated with more recent dose completion for both groups.

RESUMEN

Abstract Background Mental health disparity in sexual minorities is a crucial clinical and public health issue worldwide. A total of 500 homosexual or bisexual men aged between 20 and 25 years participated in this study. Objectives The aims of the study were to examine the relationships of victimization of traditional and cyber homophobic bullying during childhood and adolescence with problematic internet and smartphone use and activities during early adulthood among sexual minority men in Taiwan. Methods The seveirities of problematic internet and smartphone use and activities in early adulthood were compared between victims and non-victims of bullying. The severities of problematic internet and smartphone use were also compared among the groups of various types of bullying as well as among the groups of various persistence durations of being bullied. Results Victims of traditional and cyber homophobic bullying had more severe problematic internet and smartphone use than non-victims. Victims of multi-type bullying had more severe problematic internet use than victims of single-type bullying. Prolonged victimization was significantly associated with problematic internet and smartphone use. Discussion: Victimization of traditional and cyber homophobic bullying during childhood and adolescence predicts problematic internet and smartphone use during early adulthood among sexual minority men.

RESUMEN

Abstract Background: Homophobic harassment can compromise mental health of sexual minority youths. Objectives: This study examined the rates of persistent and multisite homophobic harassment and their associations with school difficulties during childhood and adolescence among gay and bisexual men in Taiwan. Methods: Participants were recruited through advertisements on the Facebook, Bulletin Board Systems, and the home pages of health promotion and counseling centers for the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community. The experiences of traditional and cyber harassment based on gender role nonconformity and sexual orientation of 500 gay or bisexual men were examined. The associations of multisite and persistent harassment victimization with school difficulties were evaluated. Results: A total of 239 (47.8%) and 131 (26.2%) participants experienced persistent and multisite harassment victimization, respectively. Harassment victimization was significantly associated with low satisfaction with academic performance in any stage of study. Moreover, the participants who were harassed in senior high schools were more likely to miss classes or be truant than those who were not harassed. The victims of multisite harassment at senior high schools were more likely to miss classes or be truant than those of school-only harassment. Discussion: Prevention and intervention programs are warranted to reduce homophobic harassment in sexual minority youths.

RESUMEN

Abstract Background A total of 6150 junior and senior high school students aged 11-18 years participated in this study. Their level of pain-related QOL was assessed using the pain subscale of the Taiwanese QOL Questionnaire for Adolescents. The severities of depression, suicidality, anxiety, and alcohol abuse were also examined. Objectives This study examined the associations between pain-related quality of life (QOL) and sociodemographic characteristics and those between pain-related QOL and mental health problems such as depression, suicidality, anxiety, and alcohol abuse. Methods The association of sociodemographic factors with pain-related QOL was examined through multiple regression analysis. The association of pain-related QOL with mental health problems was examined through logistic regression analysis. Results The boys exhibited a higher level of satisfaction with pain-related QOL than did the girls. Older age was significantly associated with a lower level of satisfaction with pain-related QOL. Residential background, parental marital status, and parental education levels were not significantly associated with the level of satisfaction with pain-related QOL. Increased risks of depression, suicidality, anxiety, and alcohol abuse were significantly associated with a low level of satisfaction with pain-related QOL. Discussion A low level of satisfaction with pain-related QOL is significantly associated with the risk of poor mental health. Adolescents with the correlates of low satisfaction with pain-related QOL should be monitored for the risk of mental health problems.

RESUMEN

CONTEXT: In 1999, an increase in mouth cancer incidence among young men (<50 years) in urban Ahmedabad was reported to be occurring along with decreasing mouth cancer incidence in older age groups and increasing oral submucous fibrosis incidence associated with areca nut consumption among young men in Gujarat. The aim was to investigate whether the increase in the incidence mouth cancer that had started among young men in the 1990s was continuing. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Ahmedabad urban population, comparison of reported mouth cancer cases in the population across four time period. METHODS: Age‑specific incidence rates of mouth cancer (International Classification of Diseases [ICD]‑9:143–5; ICD‑10:C03–06) in five year age groups among men aged ≥15 years for the city of Ahmedabad for years 1985, 1995, 2007 and 2010 were extracted from published reports. For comparison, lung cancer (ICD‑9:169; ICD‑10:C33–C34) rates were also abstracted. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: A cohort approach was used for further analysis of mouth cancer incidence. Age adjusted incidence rates of mouth and lung cancer for men aged ≥15 years were calculated and compared. RESULTS: The age specific incidence rates of mouth cancer among men increased over the 25‑year period while lung cancer rates showed a net decrease. Using a cohort approach for mouth cancer, a rapid increase in younger age cohorts was found. CONCLUSIONS: Mouth cancer incidence increased markedly among men in urban Ahmedabad between 1985 and 2010, apparently due to increasing consumption of areca nut products, mawa and gutka. Gutka has now been banned all over India, but a more vigorous implementation is necessary.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Individuals who use both smoked and smokeless tobacco products (dual tobacco users) form a special group about which little is known. This group is especially relevant to India, where smokeless tobacco use is very common. The aim of this study was to characterise the profile of dual users, study their pattern of initiation to the second product, their attitudes toward quittingas well as their cessation profile. Methods and Materials: The GATS dataset for India was analyzed using SPSS; . Results: In India, dual tobacco users (42.3 million; 5.3% of all adults; 15.4% of all tobacco users) have a profile similar to that of smokers. Some 52.6% of dual users started both practices within 2 years. The most prevalent product combination was bidi-khaini (1.79%) followed by bidi-gutka (1.50%), cigarette-khaini (1.28%), and cigarette-gutka (1.22%). Among daily users, the correlation between the daily frequencies of the use of each product was very high for most product combinations. While 36.7% of dual users were interested in quitting, only 5.0% of dual users could do so. The prevalence of ex-dual users was 0.4%. Conclusion: Dual users constitute a large, high-risk group that requires special attention.

RESUMEN

A case of posterior oesophageal web in an 18-year-old girl is being presented, in view of its rarity. The diagnosis could be established only after thoracotomy and exploration of the oesophagus. The clinical profile along with possible theories of aetiology are discussed and a brief review of literature is made.

RESUMEN

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was employed in 183 cases of clinically malignant scalp and underlying bone tumours from July, 1984 to December, 1994. The age of the patients ranged from 2 years to 89 years. There were 68 benign and 115 malignant lesions. Only the malignant lesions are analysed in the present series. The cytological findings correlated with the histopathological analysis in 94.7% of cases. There was no false positive report. The cytological analysis helped the neurosurgeons to arrive to a quick pre-operative diagnosis which help early treatment avoiding open surgical biopsy in this vital area. Very scanty literature is available on FNAC of this region.

RESUMEN

Fine needle aspiration biopsy cytology was employed in 121 cases of clinically malignant scalp and underlying bone tumours from July 1984 to March 1991. The age of the patients ranged from 2 to 76 years. There were 48 benign cases and 73 malignant lesions. The cytological findings correlated with histopathological analysis except in 5 cases in benign tumours (diagnostic accuracy being 89.6%) and in 5 cases in malignant tumours (diagnostic accuracy being 93.2%). The clinical history, the radiological parameters and the cytological analysis helped to avoid false positive report. No complication was encountered in this procedure.
