RESUMEN
Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir de maneira enfática, a partir de revisões literárias nas mais diversas áreas diretamente relacionadas à saúde, a importância que os cirurgiões dentistas, em todas as disciplinas da odontologia, devem se preocupar no tratamento de pacientes tabagistas, por se tratar de um fator prejudicial desde uma mais comum reavaliação e manutenção dentária até a cicatrização de cirurgias extensas e reconstrutivas. As interferências e intercorrências odontológicas causadas pelo hábito de fumar aqui descritas, relacionam não somente o prejuízo das mais de quatro mil substancias encontrada no cigarro, mas também o calor que este produz e que podem causas prejuízos irreparáveis na associação de intervenções cirúrgicas odontológicas.
The objective of this article is to emphatically explain, based on published studies in the most diverse areas of health, the reasons why all dental surgeons and professionals in all dental specialties should give the maximum importance and concerns to patients addicted to tobacco. Because it is a detrimental factor, from the most routine checkup and the filling of a cavity, to the healing process after a major surgery or a reconstructive surgery. The interferences and interactions listed here, caused by the smoking habit, are not only related to the damage caused by the more than four thousand substances found in a cigarette, but also by the heat in the mouth which can cause irreparable damage in association with a dental surgery.
