RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of multicomponent training on baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and heart rate (HR) complexity of prefrail older adults. Twenty-one prefrail community-dwelling older adults were randomized and divided into multicomponent training intervention group (MulTI) and control group (CG). MulTI performed multicomponent exercise training over 16 weeks and CG was oriented to follow their own daily activities. The RR interval (RRi) and blood pressure (BP) series were recorded for 15 min in supine and 15 min in orthostatic positions, and calculation of BRS (phase, coherence, and gain) and HR complexity (sample entropy) were performed. A linear mixed model was applied for group, assessments, and their interaction effects in supine position. The same test was used to assess the active postural maneuver and it was applied separately to each group considering assessments (baseline and post-intervention) and positions (supine and orthostatic). The significance level established was 5%. Cardiovascular control was impaired in prefrail older adults in supine position. Significant interactions were not observed between groups or assessments in terms of cardiovascular parameters. A 16-week multicomponent exercise training did not improve HR complexity or BRS in supine rest or in active postural maneuver in prefrail older adults.

The effect of increasing levels of organic minerals on the external and internal quality of eggs and tibia bone strength of brown-egg laying hens was studied. A total of 256, 30-week old was equally distributed in 64 cages in a total of four birds per cage in a completely randomized experimental design. The dietary treatments consisted of inorganic or increasing levels of organic minerals in the diets of laying hens, resulting in four treatments. Egg weight (g), specific gravity, shell weight and thickness (mm), albumen height (mm), Haugh unit, yolk weight and albumen (g) and bone strength (kg) were evaluated. A significant difference (P<0.05) among treatment means for egg weight and albumen was found. Intermediate inclusion levels of organic minerals resulted in the production of heavier eggs, with higher albumen weight and maintenance of the other characteristics of internal and external quality of eggs and bone strength.

Protocols were evaluated in an attempt to produce human monoclonal antibodies (HumAb) specific for the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The first series of experimentls involved in vitro immunization of normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) with peptide C57 (HIV-1 strain IIIB clone BH10 gp 120 amino acids 324-338: GNMRQAHCNISRAKW) followed by either fusion to mouse/human heterolhybrids or transformation with Epstein Barr virus (EBV). Using the hybridoma technology, three IgM class (alfa light chain) Human Ab were obtained. In a parallel study, PBL from two HIV-1 infected patients were immortalized after in vitro stimulation with fragments of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (recombinant gp120 fragment of gp 120, amino acids 295-473, or the penv9 fragment of gp160, amino acids 474-757). Five IgG class Human b (three IgG2m alfa; one IgG1, K; one IgG3, alfa) reactive with the antigens used in the in vitro stimulations were obtained
