RESUMEN

Eleven 3, 4-dihydro-4- hydtoxy-2H- 1, 3-Benzoxazin-2-one derivatives have been tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activity. All the derivatives tested have shown antibacterial and antifungal activity. However, these compounds are highly active against fungi in relatively small concentration [MIC, 50 300 micro/ml] compared to their activity against bacterial [MIC 500 1000 micro/ml]. The high activity against fungi is discussed in relation to the chemical structure of these compounds

RESUMEN

The application of antimicrobial substance, isolated from ethyl ether extract of water hyacinth, to soil inhibited and delayed seed germination and seedling growth of cotton plants. The antimicrobial substance reduced the number of total bacteria, fungi, streptomycetes, azotobacter, N-fixing clostridia, nitrifiers, aerobic cellulose decomposers and phosphate dissolving bacteria in the rhizosphere during the first period of plant growth. The inhibitory effect of such substance on seed germination and rhizosphere microflora disappeared after 20 days from addition to soil. The inhibitory effect of the antimicrobial substance on cotton seedling growth was to some extent influenced by soil type, being more pronounced in sandy soil

RESUMEN

The antimicrobial principles in three algae Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus acutus and Colelastrurm probnscideum were extracted using a successive solvent system. The extracts were bioassayed against three different bacteria. The three algae contained different antimicrobial principles most of which were soluble in ethyl ether. The Gram negative Escherichia coli exhibited high tolerance to the antimicrobial principles compared to the Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus. No stimulating effects were recorded in the examined extracts

RESUMEN

Kluveromyces fragilis, Kluveromyces lactic, Candida pseudotropicalis and Torulopsis candida grown in salted whey and in :1 [v/ v] water diluted salted whey were analyzed for macromolecular components of cell material It is generally observed that dilation of whey affects the chemical composition of the Yeasts especially the crude protein and total nucleic acids contents. The data were used to evaluate the suitability of the yeasts as a source of single cell protein
