RESUMEN

This study was conducted to investigate the relation between some endocrine and anthropometric parameters in intrauterine growth retarded infants [IUGR] at term. Forty mothers and their newborns were included. They were divided into two groups; study group comprised 20 cases diagnosed as intrauterine growth retardation [IUGR] by ultrasonography and control group of 20 cases with appropriate weight confirmed at birth. Insulin, insulin-like growth factor1-[lGF-I] and growth hormone [GH] were measured in amniotic fluid and umbilical cord blood at birth It has been found that amniotic fluid from IUGR had a higher GH [P < 0.01], than control group. In cord blood, the IUGR group showed higher growth hormone [P < 0.05], lower Insulin and insulin growth factor-l [P < 0.05 and P < 0.01 respectively] as compared to the control group. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between growth hormone. In cord blood or in the amniotic fluid and birth weight [P < 0.05 for both] in IUGR cases, and significant positive association between glucose in cord blood and birth weight of IUGR.These results suggest that the higher GH levels may represent a functional compensatory response to the lower IGF-l of the growth retarded state. The pathophysiological mechanisms for IUGR, may be similar to that of nutritional postnatal growth retardation. Although growth hormone was Increased in amniotic fluid, it could not be used as a marker for IUGR Further studies are recommended to confirm these results and to find out its reflection in management of such cases

RESUMEN

Aiming to find out the actual frequency of filariasis in El-Gharbia governorate four villages were selected from Zefta area namely sinbu El- kubra. Masged Wasif. Sinda past and Meet El-Rakha. 1980 individuals were subjected to midnight blood sample, from the beginning of January 1990 to the end of December 1992. out of them only 145 were have for microfilaremia, fifty four were below 16 years. From this work we found that frequency of filariasis is fluctuating and ELISA test is highly significant in diagnosing filariasis regarding midnight blood film
