RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of echo-cardiography in the detection of valvular cardiac affection in rheumatic patients without clinically evident carditis. Thirty rheumatic patients without evidence of carditis or murmur were examined clinically and were further assessed by laboratory investigations and with echocardiography with the Toshiba 270 ultrasound phase array scanner. The results proved that rheumatic valvulitis was detected in 33% of patients by echocardiography in spite of absense of clinical signs. Echocardiography is a valuable and sensitive diagnostic tool for sub-clinical cardiac affection in acute rheumatic fever, that is not detected by clinical and auscultatory findings
