RESUMEN

PURPOSE@#. The aim of this study was to examine the importance of the defect-free scanning of a scan body by assessing the accuracy of virtual implant positioning in computer-aided design (CAD) software when the scan body image is improperly scanned. @*MATERIALS AND METHODS@#. A scan body was digitized in a dentiform model using an intraoral scanner, and scanned images with differing levels of image deficiency were generated: 5%, 10%, and 15% deficiency in the flat or rounded area. Using a best-fit image matching algorithm on each of the deficient scan body images, corresponding virtual implants were created. The accuracy of the implant position was evaluated by comparing the linear and angular discrepancies between the actual and virtual positions of the implant. Kruskal-Wallis tests and Mann-Whitney U tests with Bonferroni correction were used to determine the statistical differences among the seven scanned image deficiency groups (α=.05). @*RESULTS@#. In general, the linear and angular discrepancies of the implant position in the software increased as the deficiency of the scan body images increased. A 15% scan body image deficiency generated larger discrepancies than deficiency of 5% and 10%. The difference of scan defect position, flat or rounded area, did not affect the accuracy of virtual implant orientation at 5% and 10% deficiency level, but did affect the accuracy at 15% deficiency level. @*CONCLUSION@#. Deficiencies in the scanned images of a scan body can decrease the accuracy of the implant positioning in CAD software when the defect is large, thus leading to the incorrect fabrication of implant prostheses.

RESUMEN

Three fungal isolates designated as CNUFC-YR329-1, CNUFC-PTS103-1, and CNUFC-PTS2-1 were discovered during a survey of fungal diversity of the order Mortierellales from freshwater and pine tree rhizosphere soil samples in Korea. The strains were analyzed morphologically and phylogenetically based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) of ribosomal DNA gene sequences. Based on their morphology and phylogeny, the three isolates were identified as Mortierella elongata, M. horticola, and M. humilis, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, M. elongata, M. horticola, and M. humilis, belonging to an undiscovered taxon, have not been previously described in Korea.

RESUMEN

During a survey of fungal diversity of the order Hypocreales in Korea, two Acremonium isolates, CNUFC-1YSRS2-4 and CNUFC-GSNPF3-1, were isolated from soils collected on a bank of the Yeongsan River, Naju, and in a forest on the Mt. Daegak located on Sinsi Island, Gunsan, South Korea, respectively. Based on the morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and D1/D2 domains of 28S ribosomal DNA, the isolates CNUFC-1YSRS2-4 and CNUFC-GSNPF3-1 were identified as A. variecolor and A. persicinum, respectively. These 2 species represent novel Hypocreales isolates in Korea.

RESUMEN

Our previous study demonstrated that yuzu has an anti-platelet effect in rat blood. In the present study, we examined whether the anti-platelet effect of yuzu can be extended to human blood by investigating its ability to inhibit aggregations induced by various agonists in human platelet rich plasma (PRP). This study also investigated the underlying mechanism of yuzu focusing on ADP granule secretion, TXB2 formations, and PLCgamma/Akt signaling. The results from this study showed that ethanolic yuzu extract (YE), and its components, hesperidin and naringin, inhibited human platelet aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner. YE, hesperidin and naringin also inhibited TXB2 formation and ADP release. The phosphorylation of PLCgamma and Akt was significantly inhibited by YE, heperidin and naringin. Furthermore, we demonstrated that YE, heperidin and naringin has anti-platelet effects in rat ex vivo studies, and lower side effects in mice tail bleeding time studies. The results from this study suggest that YE, hesperidin and naringin can inhibit human platelet aggregation, at least partly through the inhibition of PLCgamma and Akt, leading to a decrease in TXB2 formation and granule secretion.

RESUMEN

The HPTLC analysis, antioxidant. and antigout activity of Asparagus racemosus, Withania somnifera, Vitex negundo, Plumbago leylanica, Bute a monosperma and Tephrosia pur pure a extracts were investigated. The chemical fingerprinting were carried out by high performance thin layer chromatography [HPTLC]. antioxidant activity by ABTS, DPPH. FRAP radical scavenging assays, and antiogout activity by cow milk xanthine oxidase. The HPTLC fingerprint qualitatively revealed predominant amount of flavonoids. The TEAC values ranged from 45.80 to 140 microM trolox/100 g dry weight for ABTS, from 85 to 430 microM trolox/ 100 g dw DPPH, and 185 to 560 microM trolox/100 g dw for FRAP respectively. Plants used in this study was found to inhibit the toxicity. as seen from the decreased LPO and increased GSH. SOD and CAT levels. The total phenolic and flavonoid content ranged from 10.21 to 28.17 and 5.80 to 10.1 mg of gallic acid equivalents [GAE]/100 gdw respectively. The plant extracts demonstrated significant xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity at 100 g/mL and revealed an inhibition greater than 50% and IC-[50] values below the standard. This effect was almost similar to the activity of allopurinol [Standard drug] against xanthine oxidase [90.2 + 0.4%]. These plant root extract will be subjected for further extensive studies to isolate and identify their active constituents which are useful for against inflammation and gout

RESUMEN

Eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare, malignant skin tumor that originates from the eccrine sweat gland. This disease affects elderly people, primarily. It is clinically present in varied forms and the location is not related to sweat-gland distribution, which occurs on the lower limb, trunk, and head. Herein, we report a rare case of pedunculated eccrine porocarcinoma, which had developed on the flank of a 79-year-old woman.

RESUMEN

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant tumor of the skin and usually seen on hair-bearing skin that is frequently exposed to the sun, especially on the face. Polypoid BCC, which is thought to be a new variant, is distinguished from other histologic types by having a stalk and by restriction of the tumor aggregation to the pedunculated zone. We report a case of polypoid BCC in a 73-year old man who had a skin-colored pedunculated papule in the perianal area mimicking soft fibroma.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Poroid neoplasms consist of classic poroma, hidroacanthoma simplex, dermal duct tumor, and poroid hidradenoma. Poroid neoplasms are not rare tumors in dermatology. However, studies of the clinicopathologic characteristics of poroid neoplasms in Korea are very limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics of poroid neoplasms in Korea. METHODS: The clinicopathologic characteristics of forty three cases of poroid neoplasms were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Poroid neoplasms were diagnosed mostly in the sixth decade, without sex predominance. The most common site was the lower extremities, followed by the head & neck, the trunk, the sole, the palm, and the upper extremities. All cases were observed as a solitary lesion. Papule or nodule shape, verrucous surface, and erythmatous color were most common characteristics of poroid neoplasms. The two cases showed sebaceous differentiation. Some cases showed melanin pigmentations in the lesions or perilesional basal layer. CONCLUSION: Our study will be a resourceful data of poroid neoplasms for dermatologists and pathologists.

RESUMEN

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is manifested by rapid development of many sterile, nonfollicular pustules on a background of edematous erythema. More than 90 percent of AGEP are induced by medication, mostly antibiotics. Drug patch test can be helpful in the diagnosis of AGEP. This paper reports the first case of celecoxib-induced AGEP confirmed by patch test in Korean literature.

RESUMEN

Acoustic tumor which originates from the vestibular nerve is the most common neoplasm to be found at the cerebellopontine angle. The surgical approaches currently used for the acoustic tumor are the middle cranial fossa, the translabyrinthine, the suboccipital, and the combined approaches depending on the size, location, and growth rate of the tumor and the hearing level, age, and general health condition of the patient. The complex and variable anatomy and the proximity of important structures encountered during acoustic tumor surgery especially when using the middle cranial fossa approach, may make it a tough job even for the experienced surgeon. Recently, developed image-guided system may be an important step in reducing the incidence of the complication. In the present research, authors used image-guided system during acoustic tumor surgery via middle cranial fossa approach, and with good result.
