RESUMEN

Salinity is one of the most critical environmental parameters regarding fish physiology, modifying food intake and growth performance in many fish species. The present study has investigated the effects of different salinity levels on growth performance, feeding and survival of Asian seabass Lates calcarifer juveniles. Asian seabass juveniles were reared at 0 (T1), 5 (T2), 22 (T3), 36 (T4), and 42 (T5) ppt salinity. Approximately eight hundred thirty fish individuals with an average weight of 1.24±0.52 g were randomly distributed (166 fish/Tank) in 5 concrete tanks (each tank 30×6×4 ft, volume 19,122 L) for forty days. Juveniles were initially fed 42% crude protein-containing diets at a rate of 6% of their body weight per day. The results showed that salinity level had a significant effect on the weight gain (WG), average daily weight gain (ADWG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), total biomass and health indices (p<0.05). The highest WG (39.11±1.49 g), ADWG (1.00±0.12 g), SGR (8.74±0.03% d-1) and lowest FCR (0.96±0.20) were observed with T3 treatment, which was significantly higher compared to other treatment groups (p<0.05). Among the health indices, the highest hepatosomatic index and viscerosomatic index were found with T3 treatment, significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05). No significant differences were found among the treatments in terms of survival rate (p>0.05), but the maximum survival rate (98.89±0.0%) was observed in the T3 and T2 treatments. The maximum level of crude proteins (19.99±1.4%) was found in the whole-body biochemical composition of Asian seabass juveniles in the T3 treatment group. The second-order polynomial regression showed that 20 ppt salinity is optimum for the best growth of Asian seabass. Thus, the present study recommends 20 to 36 ppt salinity for the commercial farming of Asian seabass under a closed aquaculture system.

This was a cross-sectional followed by cohort type of study conducted among the pregnant mothers of second trimester in the rural areas of Rajshahi district. Initially 1800 pregnant mothers ofsecond trimester were selected from 18 unions applying 2-stage random sampling. A total of 216 pregnant mothers with asymptomatic bacteriuria were paired among the rest of the healthy pregnant mothers (without bacteriuria) on the basis of age, gravida and economic status for cohort study to relate asymptomatic bacteriuria with the incidence of symptomatic bacteriuria, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) and pre-term delivery. The matched paired pregnant mothers werefollowed monthly interval up to delivery. The prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria was 12% among the pregnant mothers in rural Rajshahi. E. Coli was the commonest causative agent of both asymptomatic and symptomatic bacteriuria. The results of this study suggest that asymptomatic bacteriuria were more prone to develop symptomatic bacteriuria, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and pre-term delivery than that of the healthy mothers (without bacteriuria). Screening of bacteriuria in pregnancy and proper treatment must be considered as an essential part of antenatal care in this rural community.

RESUMEN

A prospective observational study was carried out in the department of cardiology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in collaboration with the department of cardiology, Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka from January 2000 to October 2001. All the patients were clinically evaluated. ECG & Doppler echocardiography were done. All the patients underwent cardiac catheterization. Complex congenital heart disease & cyanotic heart disease patients were excluded from the study. Doppler estimated pulmonary to systemic blood flow ratio (Qp/Qs) was done by conventional (velocity time integral method) method. In cardiac catheterization Qp/Qs ratio derived from oximetric data which has become a well established part of clinical practice. Doppler derived Qp/Qs were compared with catheter derived Qp/Qs. 30 patients with VSD were included. In those patients Doppler derived Qp/Qs ranged from maximum 4.5 to minimum 1.10. Mean (+/-SD) was 1.88+/-0.86 In patients with VSD mean (+/-SD) Qp/Qs at catheterization was 1.80+/-0.80. Qp/Qs ranged from maximum 4.10 to minimum 1.1 In those patients the correlation coefficient for invasively determined Qp/Qs versus Doppler estimated Qp/Qs was .92 (standard error of estimate [SEE] = 0.19) & the line of regression passed close to the origin. The results of this study demonstrate that The Doppler technique allows the noninvasive evaluation of Qp/Qs with a high degree of accuracy & allows determination of the stage of VSD by the consecutive assessment of shunt magnititude.

RESUMEN

The effect of chronic intake of arsenic on the plasma concentration of paracetamol in rat was investigated. Rats received saline water with or without arsenic trioxide (10 mg/kg body weight/day) by gastric gavage on every alternate day for 29 days. A single dose of paracetamol (range 10 infinity 40 mg/kg body weight) was administered by gastric gavage to both arsenic-untreated and -treated rats on 30(th) day. Rats were sacrificed after 30 min and the amounts of free paracetamol and its metabolites in plasma were estimated using isocratic reverse-phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Arsenic toxicity reduced the plasma concentration of paracetamol to 53 - 65% when compared with the rats received no added arsenic. There were maximum 67.4 and 76.9% inhibitions of sulfate and cysteine conjugations of paracetamol respectively. But arsenic had no effect on glucuronide and mercapturate conjugations. Both liver and small intestine showed increased accumulation of arsenic and decreased amount of glutathione in arsenic-treated rats. This study suggests that chronic ingestion of arsenic inhibit the absorption and metabolism of paracetamol.

RESUMEN

Injury to the human body alters normal physiology across several systems and these alterations are proportional to the extent of the injury. Physiological response to minimally invasive surgery appears to be different than those of traditional open surgery. Acute phase protein response appears to be one example. The important cytokines that are known as major mediators of acute phase response are interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha. Thirty patients were studied in which 14 underwent open cholecystectomy and 16 laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Three blood samples were taken from each patient, one pre-operatively and 2 post operatively at 4 and 24 hours. Interleukin-6 and Tumour Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) were raised significantly in post operative blood sample in both groups but the rise was much more in open group than laparoscopic group. This suggest less stress response in laparoscopic group which also showed a direct effect on patient convalescence in terms of less pain, less analgesic requirement and shorter hospital stay

RESUMEN

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is regarded as gold standard therapy for symptomatic gall stone disease. This study was done to compare the metabolic and stress responses between open and lapraroscopic cholecystectomy and to evaluate their significance in postoperative recovery. Thirty patients with symptomatic gall stone disease were treated with open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy on elective basis (14 versus 16). Three samples of blood were collected from each patient to investigate serum cortisol, adrenaline, nor-adrenaline, C-reactive protein and blood glucose level. The mean age of patients was 41.86+/-10.13 blood glucose and stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline, nor adrenaline) and C-reactive protein all were found significantly raised in the postoperative period in open cholecystectomy than laparoscopic cholecystectomy group. The postoperative recovery was also prolonged in the open group. The obvious clinical advantages of laparoscopic cholecystectomy over open cholecystectomy is mainly because of less metabolic and stress response.

RESUMEN

The study was carried out to investigate the primary drug resistance pattern of tubercle bacilli isolated from the pulmonary tuberculosis patient attended in Shyamoli TB clinic, Dhaka. Sputum from 961 suspected tuberculous patients were randomly collected and stained by Ziehl-Neelsen (Z.N) stain. 135 were microscopically positive for Acid Fast Bacilli (AFB). Among them 30 patients were excluded from the study as they received antitubercular treatment before. So only 105 microscopically positive cases were cultured on Lowenstein-Jensen (L-J) media and 100 showed pure growth and rest 5 were contaminated with fungus. These 100 cases were studied on 4 antitubercular drugs. Out of these 100 isolates, 91 were M. tuberculosis and rest 9 in the nonchromogen group of mycobacteria other than tuberculosis (MOTT) species. Among 91 M. tuberculosis species, 89 (97.80%) to Isoniazid (INH), 73 (80.21%) to Rifampicin (RMP) and 91 (100%) to Streptomycin (SM) and Ethambutol (ETHM) were sensitive. Of the 9 MOTT species, 4 (44.44%) to SM, 7 (77.78%) to ETHM were sensitive and all (100%) were resistant to INH and RMP. Among the 100 isolates, 27 (18 M. tuberculosis and 9 MOTT) were resistant to 4 drugs either single or in combination. Of the 18 (66.67%) M. tuberculosis species, 16 (59.26%) to RMP, and 2 (7.41%) to RMP and INH were resistant. Of the 9 (33.33%) MOTT species, 4 (14.81%) to RMP and INH, 3 (11.11%) to RMP, INH and SM and 2 (7.41%) to RMP, INH, SM and ETHM were resistant.
