RESUMEN

A series of 200 thyroidectomy performed during the last four years is presented. Of these 26 patients were males and 174 females, with a mean age of 33.85 years. Clinically 126 [63.0%] patients were euthyroid, 47 [23.5%] hyperthyroid and 9 [4.5%] hypothyroid. Thyroid scintiscanning showed nodular pattern in 172 [86%] and uniform uptake in 28 [14%] cases. FNAC reported nodular goiter as the commonest lesion [22.61%] followed by benign lesions in 20.5% cases. Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy [RLNP] occurred in 10 cases [5%], out of which 7 were unilateral and 3 bilateral. It is stressed that meticulous attention should be paid to the fine details of surgery in order to avoid this complication

RESUMEN

A three year prospective study of surgical biliary tract disorders at Larkana revealed 140 admissions with a male to female ratio of about 1:8. Maximum number of patients i.e. 86 [61.43%] belonged to age group 31-50 years, the range being seven to 73 years. Common presenting symptoms were upper abdominal pain [92.85%], flatulent dyspepsia [59.28%] and nausea/vomiting [57.85%] while diagnosis included cholelithiasis [72.88%], acute cholecystitis [7.86%] and carcinoma gall bladder [5%]. Chronic cholelithiasis [84.80%] was reported to be the commonest histopathology followed by acute-on-chronic cholelithiasis and adenocarcinoma of gall bladder [4.80%]. One hundred and fourteen patients underwent surgery, cholecystectomy [82.48%] being the commonest procedure performed. wound infection [17.54%], wound haematoma [7%] and biliary leakage [3.50%] were noted as the most frequent complications. We conclude that surgical biliary tract diseases, like cholelithiasis, are not uncommon in Larkana as was once thought
