Vovós feiticeiras: algumas reflexões sobre tristes relatos de idosas moçambicanas / Granny witches: reflections on the sadstories of older Mozambican women

Este artigo tem por objetivo trazer algumas reflexões, e alertar a sociedade para os vários tipos de violência que enfrentam as idosas em Moçambique: perda de bens, terras e morada, violência física, sexual, psicológica, abuso financeiro; isto é, o uso ilegal e não autorizado dos bens, dinheiro, pensão ou outros bens de valor da pessoa idosa, incluindo falsificar o testamento do idoso para incluir o perpetrador como herdeiro, expulsão da casa onde vive com a acusação de serem feiticeiras, até chegar a seu assassinato. Para além disso, as idosas confrontam-se com a dilema de terem sob sua responsabilidade crianças órfãs do HIV/SIDA e outras doenças, quase sem o apoio do Estado. Particular realce se dá às acusações de feitiçaria em que a Associação dos Médicos Tradicionais de Moçambique (AMETRAMO) e os curandeiros intervêm de duas formas: quer com o papel de acusador, instigador da violência, quer como alvo da violência. O conceito feitiço está presente no quotidiano e na vida social e nas relações sociais de muitos moçambicanos que tentam encontrar a causa dos seus problemas no feitiço e, sob esta óptica, as idosas são o bode expiatório dos males. Por outro lado, a constatação da alta mortalidade de jovens adultos, quer devido ao HIV/SIDA quer por outros motivos, e o número de pessoas idosas sobreviventes aos inúmeros males da sociedade, criam suspeitas sobre a razão da sua longevidade que atribuem, muitas vezes, à feitiçaria...

Particular attention is paid to the accusations of witchcraft, in which the Traditional Doctor´s Association of Mozambique (AMETRAMO) and traditional healers play two roles: one as the accuser and instigator of violence, and the other as the target of that violence. The idea of witchcraft is an integral part of daily life and social relations, and many Mozambicans like to think it is the cause of their problems: in this sense older women are the scapegoats for their ills. At the same time the reality of high mortality rates among young adults due to HIV/AIDS and other causes, together with the number of older people who have survived these evils, gives rise to suspicions as to the reasons for their longevity, which is often attributed to witchcraft. Violência contra a pessoa idosa: do invisível ao visível / Violence against older people: from invisible to visible

Descreve-se, neste estudo, a situação das pessoas idosas em Moçambique (África), principalmente as manifestações de exclusão familiar e social por que passam as mulheres idosas. Percorrendo várias histórias de vida, em contextos diferenciados, mostra-se o abandono a que são votados os/as velhos/as, pela família e pela comunidade. Com poucas excepções, as idosas não recebem qualquer apoio, sendo por vezes acusadas de feitiçaria e invariavelmente assassinadas; embora não deixando de referir que os maus tratos aos mais velhos também são aplicados aos homens, fica registrado que as maiores vítimas são as mulheres. Destacando (i) que a violência, manifestada de várias formas, actua de forma silenciosa e (ii) que ainda impera a impunidade dos crimes contra idosos/as, refere-se aqui um estudo realizado em início dos anos 2000 depois das grandes cheias que afectaram significativamente a população idosa, aliando-se a preocupação, neste trabalho, de contextualizar as causas e o agravamento da violência contra idosos/idosas no contexto do HIV/SIDA. Apesar de Moçambique ter ratificado vários instrumentos internacionais, e regionais e adoptado políticas nacionais de protecção e defesa às pessoas idosas, a situação nesta região africana se torna cada vez mais preocupante. Por fim, lança-se um apelo para que os casos de violência contra idosos sejam denunciados e com tolerância zero...

It is described in this study, the situation of older people in Mozambique (Africa), mainly manifestations of family and social exclusion experienced by older women. Throughout several life stories, in different contexts, it is shown the abandon face the older people by the family and the community. With few exceptions the older women receive no support, being many times accused of witchcraft and assassinated. In spite of the fact bad treatment also applied to men, it is clear in the study that the major victims are older women. Highlighting violence is showed of various ways and acts in silence and the crimes are not taking into consideration, does the author refer to a study carried out in 2000, year of the great floods in Mozambique in which the older people were affected to the great extent. In this article the author was concerned in contextualizing the causes and the worsening situation of the violence against older people in the HIV/AIDS situation. Although Mozambique has ratified various international and regional instruments and adopted national policies and programmes for protection and defense of Human rights of older people, the current situation is a matter of concern. Finally, launches a call for violence against the elderly are reported and with zero tolerance...
