RESUMEN
As mudanças culturais têm influenciado as relações familiares no que diz respeito a suas diversas configurações. A diminuição na desigualdade entre os sexos que interfere no papel da mulher abre novas possibilidades profissionais e permite mais escolhas no que diz respeito à maternidade. Os efeitos contraceptivos também influenciam uma redefinição do casamento, tornando a reprodução voluntária. A partir disto, o objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o significado de família para casais que optaram por não ter filhos, bem como analisar a influência social e da família de origem frente a esta decisão, através de entrevistas semiestruturadas com três casais, com posterior análise de conteúdo. Os resultados evidenciaram que filhos já não é mais prioridade na vida desses casais, que se consideram família por estarem juntos e terem um lar. Constatou-se que o meio social influencia esta escolha, acarretando em cobranças e, consequentemente, em incômodo para os casais entrevistados.
Cultural changes have influenced the familiar relationships concerning their many forms. The sexual inequality decrease interferes in woman's role and opens up new professional possibilities giving woman more choices with regard to maternity. The contraceptives effects also influence on redefining marriage, making reproduction voluntary. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the meaning of family for couples who chose not to have children, and to analyze the social and the family of origin influences on this decision. A semi-structured interview was employed in three couples and data were analyzed through content analysis. Results showed that children are not a priority for these couples who consider themselves as being a family once they live together and share a home. We conclude that the social environment influences the choice for having children bringing about charges and expectations that may be burdensome for the interviewed couples.
