RESUMEN

Exertional heat stroke (EHS) is a life-threatening entity characterized by elevated core temperature with potential for multiorgan dysfunction. EHS-related rhabdomyolysis usually occurs in the early phase. We report a boy athlete with EHS-related rhabdomyolysis, which recurred 15 and 79 days after the initial event. This case indicates that EHS can cause recurrences of rhabdomyolysis along with persistent symptoms, which could hamper the return to daily activity. Children with EHS, particularly athletes, may be at risk for recurrent rhabdomyolysis.

RESUMEN

Purpose@#The optimal number of lesions to measure for response assessment from fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is not validated for lung cancer. We compared 1 lesion and up-to-5 lesion measurements for response assessment in lung cancer per PET Response Criteria in Solid Tumors (PERCIST). @*Methods@#Patients with lung cancer with pre- and post-treatment PET/CT images were included. The standard uptake value corrected for lean body mass (SULpeak) of up-to-5 hottest target lesions was measured at each time point. The percent changes of SULpeak of the single hottest lesion and the sum of up-to-5 hottest lesions were computed. Pearson correlation coefficient evaluated the strength of association between the percent changes of SUL peak values from the 1 lesion and up-to-5 lesion analyses. Response categories were complete metabolic response (CMR) with no perceptible lesion; partial metabolic response (PMR), stable metabolic disease (SMD), or progressive metabolic disease (PMD) using the threshold of 30% and 0.8 unit change in SULpeak ; and unequivocal new lesion meant PMD. The concordance for response categorization was assessed by kappa statistics. @*Results@#A total of 40 patients (25 non-small cell lung cancer; 15 small cell lung cancer) were analyzed, all with 18F-FDGavid lung cancer. Average of 3 target lesions were measured for up-to-5 lesion analysis. Pearson’s r was 0.74 (P < 0.001) and increased to 0.96 (P < 0.001) when two outliers were excluded. Response categorization with 1 lesion and up-to-5 lesion analyses was concordant in 37 patients (92.5%, weighted kappa = 0.89). @*Conclusion@#Analyzing 1 lesion and up-to-5 lesions for response assessment by PERCIST showed high concordance in patients with lung cancer.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is the standard imaging modality for response evaluation in FDG-avid lymphoma, but the prognostic value is not established in follicular lymphoma (FL). This study investigated the prognostic value of Deauville 5-point scale (D5PS) from paired interim PET/CT (PET(Interim)) and end-of-induction therapy PET/CT (PET(EOI)) in patients with FL.METHODS: FL staging and response assessment PET/CT images from 2013 to 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. PET(Interim) was performed 3 or 4 cycles after chemotherapy and PET(EOI) after 6 or 8 cycles. D5PS scores of 1, 2, and 3 were considered as negative (−), and scores 4 and 5 were considered as positive (+). Statistical analysis was done using Cox regression analysis, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and the log-rank test.RESULTS: Thirty-three patients with set of baseline, interim, and end-of-induction therapy PET/CTstudies were included. Ten patients (30.3%) had progression. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 38.8 months (range 3.5–72.7 months). On PET(Interim), 23 patients were negative and 10 were positive. On PET(EOI) scans, 29 patients were negative, and 4 were positive. On multivariate analysis, PET(EOI)(−) was associated with longer PFS. PET(Interim)(+) and PET(EOI)(+) patients had a significantly shorter PFS than PET(Interim)(−) patients (39.9 months, 95%confidence interval [CI] 23.0–56.9, versus 55.5months, 95%CI 49.7–61.2, p=0.005) and PET(EOI)(−) patients (14.2 months, 95% CI 8.5–19.8, versus 60.5 months, 95% CI 52.1–69.0, p<0.001).CONCLUSION: For patients with FL, PET(Interim) and PET(EOI) response is predictive of PFS, and PET(EOI)(+) is an independent prognostic factor for progression of FL.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to verify the validity and reliability of a 14-item Resilience Scale (RS-14) by applying it to Korean university students. METHODS: The original English version of the RS-14 was translated into Korean, and the Korean version of the RS-14 was confirmed with back-translation. This was a methodological study, and data were collected from 273 students. Principal components factor analysis and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to test validity; Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to test reliability. RESULTS: Factor analysis of 14 items revealed 2 factors with a total variance of 55.43%. The new scale correlated significantly with self-esteem (.48, p<.001) and depression (-.44, p<.001). Cronbach's coefficient was .905. CONCLUSION: The results indicate good validity and reliability for the Korean version of the RS-14. Future studies will need to further test this scale by applying it to different study populations.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics and effect size of the intervention study applied to the depression of the cancer patient. METHODS: A total of 749 studies published from 1990 to 2011 were searched through the search databases and among them, 35 examples satisfied the inclusion criteria. Three independent researchers implemented the methodological qualitative evaluation. The data were analyzed using meta-analysis. RESULTS: For the depression of the cancer patient, 19 various interventions were applied. The size of the intervention effect that can be analyzed in terms of effect size came out as OR of the laugh therapy 8.122 (p=.073), OR of the music therapy 4.418 (p=.014), OR of the integrated therapy 4.418 (p=.015). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the music therapy and integrated therapy is effective to the depression of cancer patients. Furthermore, in order to check the effects of intervention, we should need to include more randomized controlled studies and various intervention studies.

RESUMEN

We developed various plasmid cloning vectors that are useful in the construction of genomic and shotgun libraries. Two medium copy vectors, pCUGIblu21(pCb21) and pAGIblu21 (pAb21), which are resistant to kanamycin (KmR) and chloramphenicol (CamR), respectively, are useful for cloning DNA inserts ranging from 5kb to 15kb. Two high copy vectors, pCUGIblu31 (pCb31) and pAGIblu31 (pAb31), containing KmR and CamR, respectively, are useful for DNA inserts less than 5kb. These vectors are well adapted for large-scale genome sequencing projects by providing choice of copy number and selectable marker. The small vector size is another advantage of these vectors. All vectors contain lacZ including multicloning sites that originated from pBluscriptIIsk- for easy cloning and sequencing. Two medium copy vectors contain unique and rare cutting SwaI (ATTTAAAT) restriction enzyme sites for easy determination of insert size. We developed two combined vectors, pC21A31 and pC31A21, which are combinations of (pCb21 + pAb31) and (pCb31 + Ab21),respectively. These two vectors provide four choices of vectors such as KmR and medium, CamR and high, CamR and medium, and KmR and high copy vectors by restriction enzyme cutting, dephosphorylation, and gel purification. These vectors were successfully applied to high throughput shotgun sequencing of rice, tomato, and brassica BAC clones. With an example of extremely biased hydro sheared 3 kb shotgun library of a tomato BAC clone, which is originated from cytogenetically defined peri-centromeric region, we suggest the utility of an additional 10 kb library for sequence assembly of the difficult-to-assemble BAC clone.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Total T lymphocytes can be measured by CD3-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)/CD4-phycoerythrin (PE) and CD3-FITC/CD8-PE. The difference in the CD3 percentages between these two determinations was evaluated. And, we characterized the CD3(+)CD4(-)CD8(-) T lymphocytes subset using the monoclonal antibody that detects gamma delta T lymphocytes receptors. METHODS: The T lymphocyte subset assay was performed on 221 samples. A two-color direct immunofluorescence flow cytometric assay was done using a Simultest IMK-Lymphocyte kit (Bec-ton- Dickinson, San Jose, CA, USA). If the difference between the CD3 determinations were greater than 3%, the entire procedure was reviewed and the flow cytograms were reanalyzed. In 71 among 221 samples the proportion of gamma delta T lymphocytes was determined. RESULTS: The difference between the CD3-FITC/CD4-PE tube and CD3-FITC/CD8-PE tube was 3.0%, 3.6%, 3.0%, 3.4%, and 2.4% in normal subjects, patients with chronic liver disease, patients with cancer, patients with other diseases, and children, respectively. The between-tube differences for CD3 exceeding 3% were found in 69 samples (31.2%). The proportion of gamma delta T lymphocytes was 0.81%, 2.46%, 2.50%, and 0.85% in normal controls, patients with chronic liver disease, patients with cancer and patients with other diseases, respectively. No correlation between gamma delta T lymphocytes and CD3(+)CD4(-)CD8(-) T lymphocytes was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The reproducibility of the total T lymphocytes should be improved because of the between-tube difference exceeding 3% in about one third of the cases. Additionally, CD3(+)CD4(-)CD8(-) T lymphocytes were composed of heterogeneous subsets including gamma delta T lymphocytes and their proportion might be considered to be related to individual variation.
