RESUMEN

Tetraethyl ammonium is used to induce tonic- clonic seizure in albino mice weighing 25- 30 gm. Animals divided into four groups each of 5 animals. Group I treated with distilled water as a control, groups II, III and IV were treated with tetraethyl ammonium in doses of 3, 7, and 10 mg/kg i.p. [intraperitoneally] respectively. It was shown that tetraethyl ammonium induced seizure with a shorter onset with a does of 10 mg/kg body weight in comparison with that of 7 mg/kg body weight and produced a significant alterations in the cerebral potassium and sodium which were dose dependent

RESUMEN

The effect of gentamicin therapy on the lipid peroxidation process was studied. Thirty patients were enroled in this study, and twenty healthy individuals were served as control. The results showed that gentamicin significantly suppressed the activity of lipid peroxidation as manifested by low level of the byproduct malondialdehyde. This effect was observed when gentamicin was prescribed either therapeutically for seriously ill patients table [1] or prophylactically for the prevention of post surgical infected complications table [2]. It is concluded that gentamicin behaves as an inhibitor of lipid peroxidation beside its antimicrobial effects

RESUMEN

In order to evaluate a possible new protective effect of 1- carnitine in gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity, groups of rats treated either with saline, I- carnitine, gentamicin alone or gentamicin and 1- carnitiric in combination. The results showed that gentamicin produces high plasma urea, creatinine and malondialdehyde [MDA] which reached to the level of significance when compared with saline treated group. The morphological changes are of degeneration of proximal convoluted tubules. L- carnitine attenuated the biochemical and morphological changes induced by gentamicin. It is concluded that 1- carnitine afforded renal protection via prevention of further accumulation of lipid which stimulates the lipid peroxidation process
