RESUMEN

A total of 488 blood samples from tribal as well as non-tribal donors of Bihar and West Bengal were analysed for presence of abnormal haemoglobin variants. Out of 488 samples ABO and Rh blood groups were studied in 468 samples. Predominance of group B was noted in both the tribal and non-tribal groups and absence of Rh(d) was noted in non-tribal population with the exception of the tribals where 4.42% Rh(d) gene was found. Incidence of haemoglobin E gene was very low in most cases but relatively higher in non-tribal populations, while the range of raised haemoglobin A2 varied from 5.84% to 8.80%.

RESUMEN

A total of 424 blood samples were collected from two distinct populations. Local agricultural group and migratory industrial workers of West Bengal were compared with respect to haemoglobin, ABO and Rh systems. There was absence of any significant genetic difference in case of haemoglobin system.

RESUMEN

Retrospective study was carried out in 1,15,851 consecutive births in five hospitals, and prospective study of 10,415 consecutive births in one hospital of West Bengal. The overall frequency of congenital defects was 4.42/1000 live births. Incidence of NTD and talipes was predominant in rainy season, whereas cleft palate with/without hare lip had highest frequency during winter. Incidence of these anomalies decreased with increasing birth order. The frequency was noted to decline with increasing maternal age, 21-25 years age group had maximum number of malformed babies. Sex ratio and religion, however, did not have any correlation with the incidence of these malformations. When comparison was done between urban and rural population no statistically significant variation was observed.

RESUMEN

Biopsy materials from breast and rectal tumour cases were studied for cytophotometric analysis of DNA ploidy levels. Aneuploid DNA patterns were observed in majority cases of late stage and poorly differentiated carcinomas. Increased aneuploidy was also observed in metastatic growths and post menopausal cases of breast cancers.

RESUMEN

Serum protein patterns were studied in 27 cases of adenocarcinoma of breast and rectum by polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis. Pretreatment and post-treatment cases showed different protein patterns. The increased number of bands in zone A in pretreatment rectal cancer cases decreased after chemotherapy. Thus, the number and position of bands before and after treatment and in different types of cancer may be used in diagnosis and prognosis of the disease.
