RESUMEN

These results support other studies that indicate that M.V.D. is the best procedure to treat these patients. There are some points to emphasize M.V.D. in order to achieve the best results and lowest complication rate. These include good preoperative patient preparation; more lateral suboccipital craniectomy to expose the cranial nerves with minimal retraction; adequate drainage of CSF from the cistern before attempting to identify the nerve; thorough inspection of the affected cranial nerve, especially in the root entry (exit) zone; adequate mobilization of blood vessels and stable interposition of teflon felt between the blood vessels and the affected nerve.

RESUMEN

Cerebral sparganosis is caused by migrating larvae of Spirometra mansonoides. This condition is rare. The presenting symptoms include headache, seizures and focal neurological deficit, which are due to a parasitic granulomatous space-occupying lesion. The authors report a case of intracerebral hematoma, which has never been reported as a presenting symptom of cerebral sparganosis. The surgical treatment of this complicated condition yielded poor results when compared to previous reports of the uncomplicated condition.
