RESUMEN

The anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of artemisinin derived from water, methanol, ethanol, or acetone extracts of Artemisia annua L. were evaluated. All 4 artemisinin-containing extracts had anti-inflammatory effects. Of these, the acetone extract had the greatest inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and proinflammatory cytokine (IL-1beta , IL-6, and IL-10) production. Antioxidant activity evaluations revealed that the ethanol extract had the highest free radical scavenging activity, (91.0+/-3.2%), similar to alpha-tocopherol (99.9%). The extracts had antimicrobial activity against the periodontopathic microorganisms Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. animalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. polymorphum, and Prevotella intermedia. This study shows that Artemisia annua L. extracts contain anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial substances and should be considered for use in pharmaceutical products for the treatment of dental diseases.

RESUMEN

Diagnoses of cystic lesions in the pancreas are increasing in clinical practice because of the wider use of imaging studies. The selection of appropriate treatment depends on the ability to distinguish between benign and malignant cysts. However, cystic pancreatic neoplasms are sometimes misdiagnosed as pseudocysts and treated improperly. We experienced a case of mucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas misdiagnosed as a pseudocyst, which had a communication between the cyst and the main pancreatic duct.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The probiotic effects of lactic acid bacteria have widely been researched in diverse human pathogens, but only a few effects are reported against oral pathogens. The antimicrobial effects of the Enterococcus faecium 7413 isolated from Korean infants on the 9 pathogen including 6 oral streptococci were investigated the clinical use of the antimicrobial peptide for oral microflora control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: E. faecium 7413 was identified by morphological, biochemical tests and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Inhibitory effects of culture supernatants were determined for their ability to grow on agar plate containing pathogenic bacteria. RESULT: The culture supernatant of Enterococcus faecium 7413 showed inhibitory effects on oral pathogens, namely Streptococcus pyogenes KCTC 3556, S. pneumoniae KCTC 5080, S. mutans ATCC 25175, S. anginosus ATCC 33397, S. constellatus KCTC 3268, S. intermedius ATCC 27823 and Shigella flexneri KCTC 2008. Whereas it did not affect the multiplication of E. coli strains, KCTC 1041 and ATCC 43894. CONCLUSION: The data obtained in this study could be useful for future development of effective probiotics allowing prevention for oral pathogens.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The treatment of gingival recessions is needed to reduce root sensitivity and improve esthetical satisfaction. Several surgical techniques have been proposed to achieve these goals. The use of connective tissue grafts has made esthetic root coverage a predictable procedure. Numerous clinical studies have represented that using connective tissue grafts to cover exposed root surface showed high success rates. This is a case report which demonstrates the technique to obtain root coverage of a buccal recession defect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 35-year-old patient with a high level of oral hygiene was selected for the study. This patient had one Class I Miller recession defect in the mandible. A coronally advanced flap in combination with the connective tissue graft was chosen for the treatment. After surgery, the patient was told to visit the hospital once a week for his oral management and professional prophylaxis. The depth of initial recession was 4.0 mm. RESULT: After three months, it reduced to 0.0 mm, and the average recession reduction was 4.0 mm. The average root coverage was 100%. CONCLUSION: The connective tissue graft is both effective and predictable way to produce root coverage in increasing the width of CAL and KT of various adjacent gingival recessions.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: We have carried out prospective randomized clinical trial to compare survival benefit and side effect among three postoperative adjuvant chemotherapeutic regimens in serosa-negative gastric cancer patients. MATENRIALS AND METHODS: Total 317 cases were recognized as serosa negative and randomized into three groups at operating room. Out of them, 172 cases were excluded because of various reasons and 135 cases were analyzed finally; Group A 36 cases, Group B 49 cases, Group C 50 cases. Group A were treated with intravenous FP combination therapy, group B with MF combination therapy and group C with oral UFT(R) (mixture of Tegafur and Uracil) for one year. The median follow-up period was 30 months. RESULTS: 88.9% of Group A, 83.7% of Group B and 90.4% of Group C received adequate chemotherapy. The complication rates of Group A (44.4%) was significantly higher than group B (20.4%) and group C (24.0%)(P0.05). CONCLUSION: This study might suggest that the survival benefit of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for gastric Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and therefore it may be a useful adjunct tool for detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in combination with other conventional techniques.

RESUMEN

A 45-year-old man was found to have advanced cancer of the gastric antrum and lower body with multiple liver metastases. A palliative subtotal gastrectomy was performed, and multiple hepatic lesions were treated by hepatic arterial infusion therapy with floxuridine (FUdR) 3 weeks after the operation. This therapy was given for 14 days every 3 weeks. He received 4 cycles of the therapy. A systemic combination of chemotherapy with 5-FU and cisplatin was also perfomed. These two courses of intraarterial infusion therapy produced marked regression of liver metastases and necrosis. The effect was, thus, rated as a partial response. However, after the 4th course of the therapy, the patient dropped out for personal reasons. A brain metastasis was found 4 months later, and this intraarterial infusion therapy could no longer be performed. This case indicates that intraarterial infusion chemotherapy with FUdR may be useful in treating multiple liver metastases from gastric cancer.

RESUMEN

Benign solitary schwannoma of the chest wall is a rare disease of nerve sheath origin A 43-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital for right upper quandrant pain Chest X-ray shows nonspecific finding, ultrasonography & CT scan revealed a solid tumor on the right lateral chest wall. On aspiration needle biopsy, this mass was turned out to be a schwannoma of the right lateral chest wall. This mass was excised surgically in an encapsulated state by right lateral thoracotomy. Histological section revealed a typical schwannoma, which is characterized by Antoni A and Antoni B tissues of high & low cellularity.

RESUMEN

Double primary cancer is defined as the case of primary malignant tumors of different site origins, which are different histologically in each other. The number of reported cases of multiple primary malignant tumors has increased in recent years, of more developed diagnostic procedure and long survival of cancer patients. Malignant tumors of the small bowel are reported to account for about 1% of all gastrointestinal carcinomas. We have experienced a case with double primary malignant tumors of gastric adenocarcinoma and duodenal adenocarcinoma. For its great rarity, we report this case with review of literatures.

RESUMEN

Because nonspecific colonic ulcer is an unusual condition and varies markedly in clinical presentation and course, preoperative clinical diagnosis of nonspecific colonic ulcer is very difficult, But now, preoperative clinical diagnosis can he made by advent of colonofiberscopy. And, it is very important to diagnose this disease early, because late diagnosis make a poor prognosis. We report a case of nonspecific colonic ulcer diagnosed by repeated colonofiberscopy and treated with surgery.

RESUMEN

Because most of modern peoples are busy with many their task according to specialization and complexity of society, it is impportant to determine optimal and comfortable time of colonoscopy. So this study was designed to compare efficacy of colonic cleansing and patient acceptance according to the time of colonoseopy. Among 140 peoples who underwent colonoscoyy in Busan St. Benedict Hospital between March 1995 to August 1995, two groups of 70 peoples were randomly assigned to undergo colonoscopy either at A.M. or ~P.M. The results were as follows: 1) In view of efficacy rate of colonic cleansing, the group at P.M, was superior to the group at A.M.. 2) In view of patients acceptance and side effects, the group at P.M. showed better acceptance and less side effects than the group at A.M.. In conclusion, this study showed that the colonoscopy at P.M. is better than at A.M., especially when patient is poor systemic condition or low acceptance to colonoscopic cleansing preparation. However, it may be also acceptable undergoing colonoscopy at A.M. if patient condition is good and patient is busy with his task.
