RESUMEN

This study aimed to establish an animal model of decompression-induced lung injury (DILI) secondary to repetitive diving in mice and explore the role of macrophages in DILI and the protective effects of high-concentration hydrogen (HCH) on DILI. Mice were divided into three groups: control group, DILI group, and HCH group. Mice were exposed to hyperbaric air at 600 kPa for 60 min once daily for consecutive 3 d and then experienced decompression. In HCH group, mice were administered with HCH (66.7% hydrogen and 33.3% oxygen) for 60 min after each hyperbaric exposure. Pulmonary function tests were done 6 h after decompression; the blood was harvested for cell counting; the lung tissues were harvested for the detection of inflammatory cytokines, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, and immunohistochemistry; western blotting and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were done for the detection of markers for M1 and M2 macrophages. Our results showed that bubbles formed after decompression and repeated hyperbaric exposures significantly reduced the total lung volume and functional residual volume. Moreover, repetitive diving dramatically increased proinflammatory factors and increased the markers of both M1 and M2 macrophages. HCH inhalation improved lung function to a certain extent, and significantly reduced the pro-inflammatory factors. These effects were related to the reduction of M1 macrophages as well as the increase in M2 macrophages. This study indicates that repetitive diving damages lung function and activates lung macrophages, resulting in lung inflammation. HCH inhalation after each diving may be a promising strategy for the prevention of DILI.

In the observation group, after the menstrual period ended, warming acupuncture started at the acupoints located on the abdomen, e.g. Qihai (CV 6), Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongji (CV 3) and Qugu (CV 2) and those on the lumbar sacral region, e.g. Shenshu (BL 23), Mingmen (GV 4) and Yaoyangguan (GV 3), 50 min in each treatment, once daily, at the interval of 1 day after 4-day treatment. The treatment was discontinued till the patients were at the ovulatory stage. In the control group, capsules were taken orally and continuously after the end of menstrual period, 3 capsules each time, three times a day and stopped at the ovulatory stage. The treatment of one menstrual cycle was taken as one course and the treatment for 3 menstrual cycles was required. Before and after treatment, the uterine artery pulsation index (PI), endometrial thickness, endometrial type, uterine blood perfusion, the recovery time of sufficient uterine blood flow, the endomentrial receptivity (ER) during the implantation window period and the clinical pregnancy rate were observed in the two groups.@*RESULTS@#After treatment, the endometrial thickness was increased and PI decreased obviously in the two groups (<0.05) and PI in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (<0.05). After treatment, the proportion of type a and type A of endometrium was increased markedly in the two groups (<0.05) and the proportion in the observation group was higher than the control group (<0.05). After treatment, the case proportion of sufficient uterine blood flow was increased obviously in the two groups (<0.05) and the value in the observation group was higher than the control group [83.3% (30/36) vs 69.4% (25/36), <0.05]. After treatment, the proportion of ER during the implantation window period was increased remarkably in the two groups (<0.05) and the value in the observation group was higher than the control group [72.2% (26/36) vs 50.0% (18/36), <0.05]. The recovery time of sufficient uterine blood flow in the observation group was shorter than the control group (<0.05) and the clinical pregnancy rate was higher than the control group [47.2% (17/36) vs 33.3% (12/36), <0.05].@*CONCLUSION@#Warming acupuncture enhances uterine blood perfusion and improves uterine endometrial receptivity so that the clinical pregnancy rate is increased after re-transfer in the patients with failed high-quality freeze-thawed embryo transfer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND@#The association between free triiodothyronine (FT3) and long-term prognosis in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients has not been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the level of FT3 could provide prognostic value in patients with DCM.@*METHODS@#Data of consecutive patients diagnosed with DCM were collected from October 2009 to December 2014. FT3 was measured by fluoroimmunoassay. Other biochemical markers, such as free thyroxin (FT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone, red blood cell, hemoglobin, blood urea nitrogen, and serum creatinine, were tested at the same time. Follow-up was performed every 3 months. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality. Pearson analysis was used to evaluate the correlation of FT3 and other lab metrics with DCM patients' prognosis. The association of long-term mortality in DCM and FT3 was compared using Cox hazards model.@*RESULTS@#Data of 176 patients diagnosed with DCM were collected. Of them, 24 patients missed FT3 values and six patients were lost to follow-up. Altogether, data of 146 patients were analyzed. During the median follow-up time of 79.9 (53.5-159.6) months, nine patients lost, 61 patients died (non-survival group), and 85 patients survived (survival group). FT3 was significantly lower in non-survival group than that in survival group (3.65 ± 0.83 pmol/L vs. 4.36 ± 1.91 pmol/L; P = 0.003). FT3 also showed a significantly positive correlation with red blood cell and hemoglobin, negatively correlated with age, blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine (P < 0.05), respectively. Patients in the group of lower FT3 levels (FT3 ≤3.49 pmol/L) suffered from a higher risk of all-cause mortality (P for log-rank = 0.001). In multivariate Cox regression analysis, FT3 level was significantly associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 0.70, 95% confidence interval 0.52-0.95, P for trend = 0.021).@*CONCLUSION@#Low levels of FT3 were associated with increased all-cause mortality in patients with DCM.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the neuroprotective effects of kukoamine A (KuA) on rotenone-induced PC12 cells damage and to preliminary verify its potential action mechanisms. The present study may lay the foundation for finding leading compounds with anti-Parkinson's disease (PD) effects. Methods: A PD model induced by rotenone was established in vitro, and MTT, LDH, and Hoechst33342 staining were used for preliminary confirmation of KuA resistance to rotenone-induced PC12 cell injury in vitro. The effects of KuA on superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were investigated by colorimetric method and fluorescence staining, respectively. Western blotting was applied to explore the underlying mechanisms of protective effects of KuA against rotenone-induced PC12 cells damage. Results: The PC12 cell viability was significantly decreased after exposure to 0.5 μmol/L rotenone, whereas pretreatment with different concentrations of KuA could attenuate the cell injury induced by rotenone. Compared with the rotenone-treated group, KuA could decrease the ROS production and MDA level, while increase the SOD activity. In addition, KuA could effectively increase the MMP, decrease the cytochrome c release and the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio as well as inhibit caspase-3, caspase-9, and α-synuclein protein expressions. Conclusion: KuA showed neuroprotective ability on rotenone-induced PC12 cells PD model and the potential protective mechanisms of KuA can be related with inhibition of ROS generation, protection of MMP, regulation of protein expressions involved in the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway and reduction of α-synuclein expression.

RESUMEN

The incidence of thyroid cancer has increased all over the world in recent years, which has become a hot issue of widespread concern.Surgery is an important means for the treatment of thyroid cancer.Standard surgical treatment can effectively improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients, while non-standard surgical treatment can increase the risk of recurrence, reduce the survival rate, and bring serious physiological, psychological and economic burden to patients. In order to standardize the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer and improve the prognosis of patients, many guidelines have been issued at home and abroad. With the application of new therapies and the emergence of new clinical evidences, guidelines are constantly updated in various countries, the most representative of which are the guidelines issued by the American Thyroid Association and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. In the past, surgeons paid more attention to the European and American guidelines, but little was known about the treatment of thyroid cancer in neighbouring Japan. Following the publication of the first edition of Japanese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Thyroid Tumors in 2010,Japan formally released a revised edition of the old edition of the guidelines in 2018. Compared with the old version, the recommendations of the new version are more comprehensive and accurate, including risk stratification of papillary cancer and indications of primary lesion resection and lymph node dissection in patients with different risk stratification, principles of primary and complementary surgery for follicular carcinoma of different histological types, and principles of treatment for hereditary and sporadic medullary carcinoma, etc.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have confirmed that SATB1 is related to the occurrence and development of tumors, but its mechanism in tumor metastasis is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of specific interference of SATB1 gene expression on esophageal carcinoma cell line TE-1 stem cell invasion and migration. METHODS: p75NTRpositive cells and p75NTRnegative cells were isolated from human esophageal carcinoma TE-1 cell lines by immunomagnetic beads. The characteristics of p75NTRpositive cells were verified by in vitro proliferation and clone formation experiments. The p75NTRpositive tumor stem cells in logarithmic growth period were taken. In the transfection group, SATB1 gene siRNA was transfected into the cells by Lipofectamine 2000 liposome method. At the same time, the p75NTRpositive cells transfected with empty vector were used as control. After 72 hours of transfection, the expression of SATB1 in the cells was detected by western blot. Cell migration and invasion abilities were detected by Transwell assay. Expressions of matrix metalloproteinase 2/9 at mRNA and protein levels were detected by western blot and semi-quantitative RT-PCR, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Compared with p75NTRnegative cells, the proliferation of p75NTRpositive cells increased significantly after 3, 5, 7 days of culture (P < 0.05). The clone formation rate of p75NTRpositive cells was significantly higher than that of p75NTRnegative cells (P <0.0.5). After 72 hours of transfection, the expression of SATB1 in the transfection group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The ability of migration and invasion in the transfection group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Expressions of matrix metalloproteinase 2/9 mRNA and protein in the transfection group were significantly lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, siRNA interference with SATB1 gene can reduce the invasion and migration ability of TE-1 tumor stem cells in esophageal carcinoma cell line through down-regulating the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2/9.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare clinical effects of spinal leveraging manipulation and medicine for the treatment of degenerative scoliosis in pain and function.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From July 2010 to June 2013, 38 patients with degenerative scoliosis were randomly divided into spinal leveraging manipulation group and medicine group by coin tossing. In manipulation group, there were 9 males and 11 females aged from 58 to 74 years old with an average of (66.63±7.73), the courses of diseases ranged from 3 to 8 months with an average of (5.65±2.58), spinal leveraging manipulation(following meridian to straighten tendon, relieving spasm, osteopathy and massage, clearing and activating the channels and collaterals) were performed for 30 min, once a day, 4 days for a period treatment, totally 9 courses. In medicine group, there were 8 males and 10 females aged from 57 to 70 years old with an average of (63.51±6.61) the courses of diseases ranged from 3 to 5 months with an average of (4.82±1.43), celecoxib with eperisone hydrochloride were orally taken, 4 days for a period treatment, totally 9 courses. VAS score, Cobb angle and ODI score were measured.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After treatment, VAS score in manipulation group was (5.38±0.99), (6.36±1.31) in medicine group, and had significant meaning (t=2.618, P<0.05); there was significant differences in Cobb angle between manipulation group (16.51±4.89)° and medicine group (19.85±5.03) °(t=2.074,P<0.05); and had obviously meaning in ODI score between manipulation group (20.20±2.93) and medicine group (26.01±3.11) (t=5.592, P<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Spinal leveraging manipulation for degenerative scoliosis could regulate muscle balance on both side of spine, correct coronal imbalances in spine, recover normal sequence of spine, reduce and remove opperssion and stimulation of nerve root, relieve pain in leg and waist and further improve quality of life.</p>

RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the awareness and use of banned pesticides among vegetable greenhouse farmers in a town of Ledu County, Qinghai Province, China and to provide a basis for the management and control of banned pesticides.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Local residents who lived in a town of Ledu County for more than 5 years were selected as subjects in August 2012. A questionnaire survey was conducted in 267 vegetable greenhouse farmers who were selected from five villages of the town by cluster random sampling.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Of the 267 subjects, 249 (93.26%) completed and returned the questionnaires. Eighty-seven (34.9%) of the 249 subjects were aware of banned pesticides, and the banned pesticide awareness rate varied significantly among the subjects with different education levels (χ(2) = 11.061, P = 0.011). Only education level entered the regression equation in non-conditional logistic regression analysis. Only five (2.0%) of the 249 subjects knew the banned pesticides as well as the details. All the 249 subjects used banned pesticides to varying degrees in the past 5 years. Only 9.0% (17/189) of the vegetable greenhouse farmers knew the time pesticides were initially banned in China.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The banned pesticide awareness rate is relatively low in the town of Ledu County, and this rate is influenced by education level. It is needed to spread the knowledge and hazards of banned pesticides.</p>

RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To examine the effect of a Chinese medicinal herbal formula (Feitai Capsule, ) on the quality of life (QOL) and progression-free survival (PFS) of patients with unresectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty-two patients were randomly divided into the treatment group (31 cases) and the control group (31 cases). For the treatment group, 4 capsules (1.2 g/capsule) of Feitai Capsule were administered 3 times a day after meals for 3 weeks; then no drug was administered for 1 week. This schedule was continued for at least 3 more cycles (12 weeks totally). If there were no obvious toxic reactions, the treatment was extended. The patients were evaluated at least once every 8 weeks until progressive disease (PD). For the control group, the regular follow-up and evaluation were performed at least once every 8 weeks until PD. Clinical symptoms, objective response, physical constitution and energy, QOL, and PFS were evaluated regularly. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), a non-parametric test, and analysis of covariance were used to compare clinical features, amelioration of clinical symptoms, physical constitution and energy, and QOL. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare the two-group PFS.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Sixty patients finished the final evaluation, with 30 patients in each group. Baseline characters between groups were not significantly different (P>0.05). The control group had a 36.7% improvement in clinical symptoms, while the treatment group had a 73.3% improvement. This difference was statistically significant (Z= -2.632, P=0.008). The control group had a 26.7% improvement in the Karnofsky performance status (KPS), while the treatment group had a 53.4% improvement. This was also significantly different (Z=-2.182, P=0.029). A comparative analysis indicated a positive correlation (r=0.917, P<0.001). Compared with the control group, QOL in the treatment group was significantly improved, except in the social/family condition and doctor-patient relationship indicators. The PFS of the treatment group and control group were 6.23 months and 4.67 months, respectively (P=0.048).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Feitai Capsule, a Chinese medicinal herbal treatment could improve the QOL and extend the PFS of the unresectable NSCLC patients.</p>
