RESUMEN

Myiasis is an infestation of maggot, which is frequently associated with poor personal hygiene and environmental sanitation. A 78-year-old female breast cancer patient visited clinic complaining of irritation, itching, and pain within the ulcerous cancer lesion for 3 weeks. Many maggots were found in the lesion. A total of 30 maggots were removed and identified to be 3rd stage of larvae of metallic fly. This is the first case of wound myiasis in advanced breast carcinoma as a complication of untreated or drug-induced ulcer.

RESUMEN

A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2014 to April 2015 to determine the prevalence of helminth infestations among pre-school children in North Okkalapa Township. A total of 121 apparently healthy children (52 boys and 69 girls) attending the pre-school in North Okkalapa Township were recruited in this study. Stool specimens were collected and examined according to WHO guidelines. Out of 121 pre-school children only 7.44% (95% CI : 3.46 - 13.65) of them had intestinal helminthic infection. The types of intestinal helminths identifi ed were Ascaris lumbricoides 4.13%, Trichuris trichiura 2.48 % and Taenia species 0.83 %. The study showed that prevalence of helminthiasis among pre-school children is low. This could be the result of an effective de-worming programme. However, similar studies are needed to be conducted in different parts of the country to see if similar results are also seen.

RESUMEN

In acute diarrhoea except bacillary dysentery and cholera WHO recommends fluid therapy other than antibiotics to replace dehydration. there is no information on the enteric bacterial contamination and chemical composition of ORS (oral rehydration salts) packets which are available in Yangon and thus this study was carried out. It was conducted in Yangon from December 1996 to July 1997. The packets were bought from markets, drug shops and general practitioner clinics. Each packet was dissolved in water which was first boiled and then cooled. Faecal coliform count (FCC) was determined on those solution by multiple tube method at 0,6 and 24 hour. Isolation of enteric bacterial pathogen was done by standard procedures. pH values, glucose, sodium and potassium concentrations were determined by standard methods. FCC was increased with longer duration of storage time. the enteric bacterial pathogens were not isolated from all types. pH value was acidic in solutions of "Royal D" and "Servidrat". Glucose concentration was higher and potassium concentration was lower in "Royal D" than ORS packets from Myanmar Pharmaceutical factory.
