RESUMEN

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the early results of patients with acetabular dysplasia treated with the use of uncemented acetabular components and without complex bony augmentation. Materials and Methods: Eleven patients (13 hips) were included in this study. The median acetabular component size was 44mm (range, 44- 56mm). The mean follow up period was 24 months (range, 15-59 months). All patients were pain free at follow up. Results: The mean Merle d'Aubigné Postel score increased from 3 to 17. Our early results suggest that acetabular reconstruction using a small cementless cup, may be an alternative to previously described methods of total hip arthroplasty in the presence of superolateral bone loss.

RESUMEN

In 2000, cryptococcal meningitis was a common HIV related opportunistic infection in central Thailand requiring inpatient management but few patients suffering from it could afford a full course of treatment once infection had occurred. Since then, the production of generic fluconazole and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in Thailand (and national guidelines regarding their use) is reducing the incidence of this condition and such a strategy of prevention appears much more effective than treating established disease. There remains a continuing need for health education in the region and the removal of stigma associated with this disease so that earlier detection of HIV infection and the implementation of these national guidelines can have their greatest impact.

RESUMEN

The cadmium concentrations in the kidneys and livers of 39 autopsy cases in Jamaica, in the age group > or = 40 years, are renal cortex: range 6.7-126 mg kg-1, mean 43.8 mg kg-1; liver: range 0.3-24.3 mg kg-1, mean 5.3 mg kg-1. The mean levels in the renal cortex are higher for women than for men but not so significantly, nor are the differences between smokers and non-smokers clear. The observed values are considered high, second only to Japan where cadmium related health impairments have occurred, and nearly twice as high as the values reported from Austria, Australia, the United Kingdom and Sweden. The Jamaican cases were from areas with relatively low soil-cadmium concentrations, and the corresponding values are likely to be significantly higher in central Jamaica where the soil contains unusually high levels of cadmium. An examination of possible contributions of cadmium intake to renal problems in Jamaica now appears to be necessary

RESUMEN

Cutaneous metastasis from colon cancer is an uncommon event that usually occurs after identification of the primary tumour and generally indicates diffuse disease. Incisional metastasis occasionally occurs following laparoscopic or open colon cancer resection. However, to the authors' knowledge only one previous case of colon cancer presenting as a cutaneous metastasis in an old operative scar has been reported. We describe a case of colon cancer presenting as a cutaneous metastasis in an old cholecystectomy scar and discuss possible pathophysiological mechanisms.
