RESUMEN

Objective@#This study investigated phubbing (the act of ignoring one’s companion or companions to pay attention to one’s smartphone) and examined the factors affecting phubbing among nursing students in South Korea. @*Methods@#A cross-sectional survey design was adopted, and a self-reported questionnaire was used. Data were collected from 200 nursing students in two cities. Self-administered questionnaires included demographic data, smartphone addiction, media multitasking motivation, interpersonal competency, and phubbing. @*Results@#Phubbing was positively correlated with smartphone addiction (r=0.41, p<0.001) and media multitasking motivation (r=0.16, p<0.05), and negatively correlated with interpersonal competence (r=-0.51, p<0.001). Factors influencing nursing students’ phubbing were interpersonal competency (β=-0.59, p<0.001), media multitasking motivation (β=0.24, p<0.001), smartphone addiction (β=0.19, p<0.01) and interpersonal relationships (β=0.14, p<0.05). The model including these variables accounted for 43% of variance in phubbing. @*Conclusion@#Nursing students showed a moderate level of phubbing, and interpersonal competency was an important factor for reducing their phubbing of nursing students. Since phubbing occurs frequently among nursing students, educators in nursing are required to develop and implement active interventional measures to help nursing students avoid phubbing and improve their interpersonal relationships by increasing their empathic ability and communication skills.

RESUMEN

Congenital analbuminemia (CAA) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by extremely low serum levels of albumin. CAA is caused by various homozygous or heterozygous mutations of the ALB gene. Patients often exhibit no clinical symptoms, aside from rare accompanying conditions, such as fatigue, ankle edema, and hypotension. This case report describes the case of a 28-year-old asymptomatic Korean male referred to our center with hypocalcemia, vitamin D deficiency, and hypoalbuminemia who was diagnosed with CAA. To determine the cause of hypoalbuminemia in the patient, laboratory tests, radiological examination, and DNA sequencing were performed. The patient was confirmed to not exhibit any other clinical conditions that can induce hypoalbuminemia and was diagnosed with CAA using DNA sequencing. The present case of CAA is the first to be reported in Korea.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in pre-menopausal housewives and to explore controllable and uncontrollable factors regarding metabolic syndrome. METHODS: The study population of this cross-sectional survey was from the Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KHANES) 2010 through 2015, including the fifth and sixth population-based studies. The criteria for metabolic syndrome include waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) based on Korean Clinical Practice Guideline for Metabolic Syndrome by the Korean Academy of Family Medicine 2015. RESULTS: Among the 2,498 subjects, 247 subjects had metabolic syndrome and the prevalence was estimated to be 9.9%. The number of subjects who met the criterion of HDL was 936 (36.2%), which was the most prevalent among the criteria for metabolic syndrome. Statistically significant (p < .05) factors include age, livinghood benefit group, perceived health status, obesity, family history of DM, sleeping time, awareness of stress, leukocyte, and erythrocyte count. The odds ratio of obesity in the BMI ≥25 group was 12.59 times as high as that of the BMI < 25 group (p < .001) for metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in pre-menopausal housewives in the survey was not low, and it is necessary to develop and apply comprehensive health habit management programs to improve controllable factors including exercise and food intake.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was aimed to identify research trends related to complementary and alternative therapy (CAT) in Korea. METHODS: Data were collected from 2000 to 2018 articles in Korean database (KISS, RISS and DBPIA). 295 semantic morphemes were extracted from 123 articles by network analysis program. Co-occurrence matrixes of the morphemes were generated by weighting Jaccard-coefficient and then we did network analysis and visualization. RESULTS: Common morphemes with high centralities were ‘Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)’, ‘CAT’, ‘Aged’, ‘Diet therapy’, ‘Herbal medicine’, ‘Acupuncture’, and ‘Oriental medicine’. Since 2000, studies on complementary and alternative therapies have been actively involved in biological and manipulative therapies, and it has been found that the main target of CAT is the elderly. CONCLUSION: Despite much attention of complementary alternative therapies, the scientific basis is insufficient. Through this study, we could find research trends in complementary alternative therapies and set the direction of future research. It is necessary to expand research on complementary replacement therapy for various diseases and age groups.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the performance of safety care activities among nurses in small-medium sized general hospitals and to identify factors associated with the safety care activities. METHODS: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 455 nurses were recruited from small-medium sized general hospitals. Data were collected with the ‘Questionnaire on Patient Safety Care Activities’ by web based survey. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test and One-way ANOVA with Duncan test for multiple comparison were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The mean score of patient safety care activity was 4.52 out of a total of 5 points. The total score of patient safety care activities according to the characteristics of the subjects was significantly higher than those of patients who had more than 15 years of clinical nursing career (F=7.06, p < .001) and there was a significant difference according to experience of healthcare accreditation (t=−2.10, p=.036). CONCLUSION: In order to raise the level of patient safety care activity among nurses in small-medium sized general hospitals, it is important to retain experienced nurses. Practical training and regular educations on patient safety care activities are required for nurses in small-medium sized general hospitals.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of first onset of constipation during the rehabilitation stage and risk factors for constipation in patients with cerebral vascular disease (CVD). METHODS: Participants for this retrospective study were 214 CVD patients admitted to rehabilitation units. First onset of constipation and factors influencing constipation such as dependency level were recorded for 14 days during the rehabilitation stage. Survival analysis with Cox proportional hazard model and descriptive statistics were conducted. RESULTS: Age, patients'severity, types of diet, and dependency level were different between constipation and non-constipation groups. In survival analysis, 99% of participants developed constipation within 14 days after admission to rehabilitation units. Median constipation occurrence time was 7.4 days. Patients who were immobile and had tube feedings were more likely to develop constipation 4.07 times (95% CI: 1.018~16.301, p=.047) and 2.09 times (95% CI: 1.001~4.377, p=.050) respectively compared to patients who were independent and had a regular diet, respectively. CONCLUSION: Most CVD patients experienced constipation within 2 weeks after entering the rehabilitation stage. Constipation was linked to types of diet and dependency level. These factors associated with constipation should be considered when caring for patients in rehabilitation.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify and compare hospice care research topics between Korean and international nursing studies using text network analysis. METHODS: The study was conducted in four steps: 1) collecting abstracts of relevant journal articles, 2) extracting and cleaning keywords (semantic morphemes) from the abstracts, 3) developing co-occurrence matrices and text-networks of keywords, and 4) analyzing network-related measures including degree centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, and clustering using the NetMiner program. Abstracts from 347 Korean and 1,926 international studies for the period of 1998–2016 were analyzed. RESULTS: Between Korean and international studies, six of the most important core keywords-“hospice,”“patient,”“death,”“RNs,”“care,” and “family”-were common, whereas “cancer” from Korean studies and “palliative care” from international studies ranked more highly. Keywords such as “attitude,”“spirituality,”“life,”“effect,” and “meaning” for Korean studies and “communication,”“treatment,”“USA,” and “doctor” for international studies uniquely emerged as core keywords in recent studies (2011~2016). Five subtopic groups each were identified from Korean and international studies. Two common subtopics were “hospice palliative care and volunteers” and “cancer patients.” CONCLUSION: For a better quality of hospice care in Korea, it is recommended that nursing researchers focus on study topics of patients with non-cancer disease, children and family, communication, and pain and symptom management.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Home health-care services have been implemented to promote health among older adults (medicare beneficiaries and low-income or vulnerable older adults) with health conditions, though there is limited evidence to support their effectiveness. This study aimed to identify improvements in frailty and depression in vulnerable older adults who received home health-care services. METHODS: We used a database comprised of approximately 15,053 older adults residing in the Seoul metropolitan area having received home health-care services from 2008 to 2011. Frailty was measured using the Otasha-Kenshin scale, and geriatric depression was measured using the short-form Geriatric Depression Scale. RESULTS: We observed a significant decline in the prevalence of frailty and depression symptoms in vulnerable older adults between 2009 and 2011 (p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis found that the decreased prevalence observed in vulnerable older adults was statistically significant for both frailty (odds ratio [OR], 0.52; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.43-0.63; p<0.001) and depression (OR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.51-0.72; p<0.001). A greater decrease was observed among the younger elderly subjects. CONCLUSION: This study showed that frailty and depression were significantly improved in the vulnerable older adults who received home health-care services. These services need to focus on high-risk groups with frailty and depression. In particular, early intervention is needed for younger elderly people, and more professional and focused management is needed for those aged 85 and above.

RESUMEN

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an idiopathic autoimmune connective disease characterized by muscles and skin inflammation of and a well-recognized association with several human malignancies, especially breast cancer. Paclitaxel is a taxane antineoplastic agent with therapeutic effects against a wide range of cancers including breast cancer. This drug is well known for neurotoxicity and hypersensitivity reactions. However, cutaneous drug eruptions, especially those of grade III or higher, are not frequent. Here, we describe the case of a 55-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer who developed paraneoplastic DM and a paclitaxel-induced exanthematous drug eruption. This case report emphasizes the importance of evaluating internal malignancies, such as advanced breast cancer, in newly developed DM patients. In addition, it presents a rare case of paclitaxel-induced exanthematous drug eruption. The purpose of this case report highlights the immunological pathogenic mechanism of DM and drug eruption in underlying advanced breast cancer.
