RESUMEN

Based upon the theory of cognitive appraisal of stress, an instrument was designed to identify the threats of the clinical experience as described by 120 novice students at their initial exposure to the medical surgical practice in baccalaureate nursing program. Using content analysis six areas of threats were determined including personal inadequacy, fear of making errors, uncertainly, the clinical instructor, fear of the clinical experience and fear of failure. The test of significance revealed that uncertainly was the highest threat- provoker, and the threat of inadequacy was the lowest. The threats elaborated in this study should provide nurse educators with some insights into underst and ing the stressors inherent in the clinical experience and the effective means of dealing with them so as not to interfere with student's learning

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the language of medical staff on the level of communication with mothers of children receiving, medical care at two polyclinics in Tripoli - Libya and their degree of satisfaction. The sample of the study included 100 mothers attending polyclinic operated by Arab staff and a similar number from clinics operated by non Arab staff members. The results show that communication was complete with Arab staff members, while communication with non Arab was dependant on mother's education and was very poor with illiterate mothers. Communication was very poor with physician and nurses and improved with pharmacists and lab personnel. The results also show that mothers' satisfaction with the service was positively associated with her communication with the medical team. The results showed that better communication with staff members encourages the mothers to use the service and continue its use
