RESUMEN

Rhesus phenotypes were done on random samples of blood of 500 blood donors from February 1979 to September 1980. The distribution of Rhesus phenotypes in this sample is presented. Although the pattern of distribution of these phenotypes in Sri Lankans is similar to that reported in Indians, it differs markedly from that reported in Caucasians.

RESUMEN

Of 26,932 blood donors at the Central Blood Bank and at three mobile units that covered most parts of the Island during 1985, 81.4% were men and 18.6% women. The age range acceptable for blood donations is 18 to 55 years. The largest number of donors in both sexes were in the 21 to 30 year age group, with the next common group being 31 to 40 years for men and 18 to 20 years for women.

RESUMEN

MNSs blood grouping was done on a random sample of 700 blood donors at the Central Blood Bank and at some of the Mobile Units, from September 1980 to August 1981. The distribution of M,N, Ss and combined MNSs phenotypes and their corresponding genotypes among Sri Lankans was evaluated. The frequencies of these phenotypes are different from those of Caucasians. The significance of MNSs blood grouping in the investigation of doubtful paternity is discussed.
