The Gravataí River basin, one of the main water sources of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, is among the ten most polluted rivers in Brazil. Water quality is monitored only through physico-chemical and microbiological parameters in Brazil, and in this context, considering the importance of the use of biomarkers in complementing the analysis of water, the present study aimed to evaluate the environmental quality of the main affluent of the Gravataí River, Demetrio stream, through physico-chemical, microbiological, and cytogenotoxic criteria, at the stream source (P1), whereas samples P2 and P3 were obtained from the upstream near the area with the highest urban density and the downstream near the meeting point with the Gravataí River, respectively. The results for copper concentration and color classified the Demetrio stream as Class 4 in general, that is, the water is suitable only for navigation and to landscape harmony. The main genotoxic alterations (micronuclei and nuclear buds) were observed in P2, in which were obtained the highest levels of copper, in addition to iron and manganese. Anthropic interventions were observed in P1 and P2; however, due to its low metal concentration, P3, near the Gravataí River, manifested an improvement in environmental quality.

Abstract Macaria kruegeri Vargas, Hausmann & Parra sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on adults reared from larvae collected on the shrub Adesmia spinosissima Meyen (Fabaceae) at about 3200 m elevation in the Andes of northern Chile. Macaria kruegeri resembles Macaria alba (Bartlett-Calvert, 1893), described from southern Chile. However, the two species can be accurately separated based on subtle differences in wing pattern and the shape of the valvula of the male genitalia. In addition, there is a DNA barcode divergence (COI gene) of 4.9% between both taxa.

In preparation for a legal implementation of EU-regulation 1829/2003, the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) has been requested by the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management to conduct final environmental risk assessments for all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and products containing or consisting of GMOs that are authorized in the European Union under Directive 2001/18/EC or Regulation 1829/2003/EC. The assignment includes a scientific environmental risk assessment of oilseed rape T45 (Reference EFSA/GMO/UK/2005/25) from Bayer CropScience for food and feed uses, import and processing. Oilseed rape T45 has previously been risk assessed by the VKM Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), commissioned by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority related to the EFSAs public hearing in 2007 (VKM 2007a). Food additives produced from T45 oilseed rape were notified in the EU as existing food additives within the meaning of Article 8 (1)(b) of Regulation 1829/2003, authorized under Directive 89/10/EEC (Community Register 2005). Feed materials produced from T45 were also notified as existing feed products containing, consisting of or produced from T45 according to Articles 8 and 20 of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 in 2003. A notification for placing on the market of T45 according to the Directive 2001/18/EC was submitted in March 2004 (C/GB/04/M5/4), covering import and processing of T45 into food and feed. The application was further transferred into Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 in November 2005 (EFSA/GMO/UK/2005/25). An application for renewal of authorisation for continued marketing of food additives and feed materials produced from T45 oilseed rape was submitted under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 in 2007 (EFSA/GMO/RX/T45). The EFSA GMO Panel performed one single comprehensive risk assessment for all intended uses of genetically modified oilseed rape T45, and issued a comprehensive scientific opinion for both applications submitted under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003. The scientific opinion was published in January 30 2008 (EFSA 2008), and food and feed products containing or produced from oilseed rape T45 was approved by Commission Decision 26 March 2009 (Commission Decision 2009/184/EC). The oilseed rape T45 is however currently being phased out (EU-COM 2009). The commercialisation of T45 oilseed rape seeds in third countries was stopped after the 2005 planting season and stocks of all oilseed rape T45 lines have been recalled from distribution and destroyed. The applicant commits not to commercialize the event in the future and the import will therefore be restricted to adventitious levels in oilseed rape commodity. Thus the incidence of oilseed rape T45 in the EU is expected to be limited. The environmental risk assessment of the oilseed rape T45 is based on information provided by the notifier in the application EFSA/GMO/UK/2005/25 and EFSA/GMO/RX/T45, and scientific comments from EFSA and other member states made available on the EFSA website GMO Extranet. The risk assessment also considered other peer-reviewed scientific literature as relevant. The VKM GMO Panel has evaluated T45 with reference to its intended uses in the European Economic Area (EEA), and according to the principles described in the Norwegian Food Act, the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act, Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms, and Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed. The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety has also decided to take account of the appropriate principles described in the EFSA guidelines for the risk assessment of GM plants and derived food and feed (EFSA 2006, 2011a), the environmental risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA 2010), the selection of comparators for the risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA 2011b), and for the post-market environmental monitoring of GM plants (EFSA 2006, 2011c). The scientific risk assessment of oilseed rape T45 include molecular characterisation of the inserted DNA and expression of target proteins, comparative assessment of agronomic and phenotypic characteristics, unintended effects on plant fitness, potential for horizontal and vertical gene transfer, and evaluations of the post-market environmental plan. In line with its mandate, VKM emphasised that assessments of sustainable development, societal utility and ethical considerations, according to the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and Regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act, shall not be carried out by the Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms. The glufosinate ammonium-tolerant oilseed rape transformation event T45 (Unique Identfier ACSBNØØ8-2) was developed by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of protoplast from the conventional oilseed rape cultivar “AC Excel”. T45 contains a synthetic version of the native pat gene isolated from the bacteria Streptomyces viridochromogenes, strain Tü 494. The inserted gene encodes the enzyme phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (PAT), which confers tolerance to the herbical active substance glufosinate ammonium. The PAT enzyme detoxifies glufosinate-ammonium by acetylation of the L-isomer into N-acetyl-L-glufosinate ammonium (NAG) which does not inhibit glutamine synthetase and therefore confers tolerance to the herbicide. Glufosinate ammonium-tolerant oilseed rape transformation event T45 has been conventionally bred into an array of spring-type oilseed rape varieties. Molecular characterization: The molecular characterisation data established that only one copy of the gene cassette is integrated in the oilseed rape genomic DNA. Appropriate analysis of the integration site including sequence determination of the inserted DNA and flanking regions and bioinformatics analysis have been performed. Bioinformatics analyses of junction regions demonstrated the absence of any potential new ORFs coding for known toxins or allergens. The genetic stability of transformation event T45 was demonstrated at the genomic level over multiple generations by Southern analysis. Segregation analysis shows that event T45 is inherited as dominant, single locus trait. Phenotypic stability has been confirmed by stable tolerance to the herbicide for T45 lines and varieties derived from the event grown in Canada since 1993. Oilseed rape transformation event T45 and the physical, chemical and functional characteristics of the proteins have previously been evaluated by The VKM Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms, and considered satisfactory (VKM 2007a). Comparative assessment: Based on results from comparative analyses of data from field trials located at representative sites and environments in Canada in 1995-1997, it is concluded that oilseed rape T45 is agronomically and phenotypically equivalent to the conventional counterpart and commercial available reference varieties, with the exception of maturity and the herbicide tolerance conferred by the PAT protein. The field evaluations support a conclusion of no phenotypic changes indicative of increased plant weed/pest potential of event T45 compared to conventional oilseed rape. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that in-crop applications of glufosinate herbicide do not alter the phenotypic and agronomic characteristics of event T45 compared to conventional oilseed rape. Environmental risk: According to the applicant, the event T45 has been phased out, and stocks of all oilseed rape T45 lines have been recalled from distribution and destroyed since 2005. However, since future cultivation and import of oilseed rape T45 into the EU/EEA area cannot be entirely ruled out, the environmental risk assessment consider exposure of viable seeds of T45 through accidental spillage into the environment during transportation, storage, handling, processing and use of derived products. Oilseed rape is mainly a self-pollinating species, but has entomophilous flowers capable of both self- and cross-pollinating. Normally the level of outcrossing is about 30%, but outcrossing frequencies up to 55% are reported. Several plant species related to oilseed rape that are either cultivated, occurs as weeds of cultivated and disturbed lands, or grow outside cultivation areas to which gene introgression from oilseed rape could be of concern. These are found both in the Brassica species complex and in related genera. A series of controlled crosses between oilseed rape and related taxa have been reported in the scientific literature. Because of a mismatch in the chromosome numbers most hybrids have a severely reduced fertility. Exceptions are hybrids obtained from crosses between oilseed rape and wild turnip (B. rapa ssp. campestris) and to a lesser extent, mustard greens (B. juncea), where spontaneously hybridising and transgene introgression under field conditions have been confirmed. Wild turnip is native to Norway and a common weed in arable lowlands. There is no evidence that the herbicide tolerant trait results in enhanced fitness, persistence or invasiveness of oilseed rape T45, or hybridizing wild relatives, compared to conventional oilseed rape varieties, unless the plants are exposed to herbicides with the active substance glufosinate ammonium. Glufosinate ammonium-containing herbicides have been withdrawn from the Norwegian market since 2008, and the substance will be phased out in the EU in 2017 for reasons of reproductive toxicity. Accidental spillage and loss of viable seeds of T45 during transport, storage, handling in the environment and processing into derived products is, however, likely to take place over time, and the establishment of small populations of oilseed rape T45 cannot be excluded. In preparation for a legal implementation of regulation 1829/2003, the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) has been requested by the Norwegian Environment Agency and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) to conduct final food/feed and environmental risk assessments for all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and products containing or consisting of GMOs that are authorized in the European Union under Directive 2001/18/EC or Regulation 1829/2003/EC. The request covers scope(s) relevant to the Gene Technology Act. The request does not cover GMOs that VKM already has conducted its final risk assessments on. However, the Agency and NFSA requests VKM to consider whether updates or other changes to earlier submitted assessments are necessary. The insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant genetically modified maize MON 88017 from Monsanto (Unique Identifier DAS-MON 88017-7) was approved in the EU under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 for food and feed uses, import and processing the 30th of October 2009 (Commission Decision 2009/814/EC). Genetically modified maize MON 88017 has previously been risk assessed by the VKM Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), commissioned by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and the Norwegian Environment Agency related and to the EFSA public hearing of the applications EFSA/GMO/CZ/2005/27 and EFSA/GMO/CZ/2008/54 in 2007 and 2010 (VKM 2007a, 2010a). In addition, MON 88017 has been evaluated by the VKM GMO Panel as a component of several stacked GM maize events and Regulation (EC) 1829/2003 (VKM 2007b, VKM 2008, VKM 2009, VKM 2010b). The food/feed and environmental risk assessment of the maize MON 88017 is based on information provided by the applicant in the applications EFSA/GMO/UK/2005/27 and EFSA/CZ/2008/CZ/2008/54, and scientific comments from EFSA and other member states made available on the EFSA website GMO Extranet. The risk assessment also considered other peer-reviewed scientific literature as relevant. The VKM GMO Panel has evaluated MON 88017 with reference to its intended uses in the European Economic Area (EEA), and according to the principles described in the Norwegian Food Act, the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act, Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms, and Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed. The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety has also decided to take account of the appropriate principles described in the EFSA guidelines for the risk assessment of GM plants and derived food and feed (EFSA 2011a), the environmental risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA 2010a), selection of comparators for the risk assessment of GM plants (EFSA 2011b) and for the post-market environmental monitoring of GM plants (EFSA 2011c). 8.04.2016 The scientific risk assessment of maize MON 88017 include molecular characterisation of the inserted DNA and expression of novel proteins, comparative assessment of agronomic and phenotypic characteristics, nutritional assessments, toxicology and allergenicity, unintended effects on plant fitness, potential for gene transfer, interactions between the GM plant and target and non-target organisms, effects on biogeochemical processes. It is emphasised that the VKM mandate does not include assessments of contribution to sustainable development, societal utility and ethical considerations, according to the Norwegian Gene Technology Act and Regulations relating to impact assessment pursuant to the Gene Technology Act. These considerations are therefore not part of the risk assessment provided by the VKM Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms. Genetically modified maize MON 88017 expresses a Cry3Bb1 insecticidal protein, derived from Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kumamotoensis, which confers protection against coleopteran target pests belonging to the genus Diabrotica such as Western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera). MON 88017 is also developed to provide tolerance to the herbicidal active substance glyphosate by the introduction of a gene coding for the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), from Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain CP4 (CP4 EPSPS). Molecular characterisation The molecular characterisation data has established that only one copy of the transgene is integrated in the maize genomic DNA. Appropriate analyses of the integration site including sequence determination of the inserted DNA and flanking regions and bioinformatics analysis have been performed. Bioinformatics analyses of junction regions have demonstrated the absence of any potential new ORFs coding for known toxins or allergens. The genetic stability of transformation event MON 88017 was demonstrated at the genomic level over multiple generations by Southern analysis. Segregation analysis shows that event MON 88017 is inherited as a dominant, single locus trait. The VKM GMO Panel considers the molecular characterisation of maize MON 88017 satisfactory. Comparative assessment Comparative analyses of maize MON 88017 and its conventional counterpart have been performed during field trials located at representative sites and environments in Europe and USA. A total of 12-16 different conventional maize varieties were included in the field trials and used as references. With the exception the insect resistance and herbicide tolerance conferred by the Cry3Bb1 and CP4 EPSPS proteins, no biologically relevant differences were found between maize MON 88017 and controls. Based on the assessment of available data, the VKM GMO Panel concludes that maize MON 88017 is compositionally, agronomically and phenotypically equivalent to its conventional counterpart except for the new proteins. 8.04.2016 VKM Report 2016:12 Food and feed safety assessment Whole food feeding studies on rats and broilers indicate no adverse health effects of maize MON 88017. These studies also show that maize MON 88017 is nutritionally equivalent to conventional maize. The Cry3Bb1 and CP4 EPSPS proteins do not show relevant sequence resemblance to other known toxins or IgE-allergens, nor have they been reported to cause IgE-mediated allergic reactions. However, some studies have indicated a potential role of Cry-proteins as adjuvants in allergic reactions. Based on current knowledge, the VKM GMO Panel concludes that maize MON 88017 is nutritionally equivalent to conventional maize varieties. It is unlikely that the Cry3Bb1 and CP4 EPSPS proteins will cause toxic or IgE-mediated allergic reactions to food or feed based on maize MON 88017 compared to conventional maize. Environmental risk assessment Considering the intended uses of maize MON 88017, excluding cultivation, the environmental risk assessment is concerned with accidental release into the environment of viable grains during transportation and processing, and indirect exposure, mainly through manure and faeces from animals fed grains from maize MON 88017. Maize MON 88017 has no altered survival, multiplication or dissemination characteristics, and there are no indications of an increased likelihood of spread and establishment of feral maize plants in the case of accidental release into the environment of seeds from maize MON 88017. Maize is the only representative of the genus Zea in Europe, and there are no cross-compatible wild or weedy relatives outside cultivation. The VKM GMO Panel considers the risk of gene flow from occasional feral GM maize plants to conventional maize varieties to be negligible in Norway. Considering the intended use as food and feed, interactions with the biotic and abiotic environment are not considered by the GMO Panel to be an issue. 8.04.2016. VKM Report 2016:12 Overall conclusion Based on current knowledge, the VKM GMO Panel concludes that maize MON 88017 is compositionally, nutritionally, agronomically and phenotypically equivalent to its conventional counterpart except for the new proteins. It is unlikely that the Cry3Bb1 and CP4 EPSPS proteins will cause an increased risk of toxic or IgE-mediated allergic reactions to food or feed based on maize MON 88017 compared to conventional maize. The VKM GMO Panel concludes that maize MON 88017, based on current knowledge, is comparable to conventional maize varieties concerning environmental risk in Norway with the intended usage.

RESUMEN

Genetically modified LLcotton25 from Bayer Crop Science expresses the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus ATCC21705 encoding the phosphinothricin-acetyl–transferase (PAT) enzyme, which confers tolerance to the active herbicide glufosinate-ammonium. Updated bioinformatics analyses of the inserted DNA and flanking sequences in LLCotton25 have not indicated potential production of putatively harmful toxins or allergens caused by the genetic modification. Genomic stability of the functional insert and consistent expression of the bar gene have been shown over several generations of LLCotton25. Data from field trials indicate that with the exception of the newly introduced trait, LLCotton25 is compositionally, phenotypically and agronomically equivalent to its conventional counterpart Coker 312 and other cotton cultivars. A 33-day nutritional assessment trial with broilers has not revealed adverse effects of cottonseed meal from LLCotton25. Toxicity testing of the PAT protein in a repeated-dose dietary exposure test with rats did not indicate adverse effects. The PAT protein produced in LLCotton25 does not show amino acid sequence resemblance to known toxins or IgEdependent allergens, nor has it been reported to cause IgE-mediated allergic reactions. It is therefore unlikely that the PAT protein will cause toxic or IgE-mediated allergic reactions to food or feed containing LLCotton25 compared to conventional cotton cultivars. Cotton is not cultivated in Norway, and there are no cross-compatible wild or weedy relatives of cotton in Europe. Based on current knowledge and with the exception of the introduced traits, the VKM GMO Panel concludes that LLCotton25 is nutritionally, compositionally, phenotypically and agronomically equivalent to and as safe as its conventional counterpart and other cotton cultivars. Considering the intended uses, which exclude cultivation, the VKM GMO Panel concludes that LLCotton25 does not represent an environmental risk in Norway.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar um diagnóstico da qualidade das águas dos igarapés Rabo de Porco e Precuá, localizados na área de implantação da Refinaria Premium I, no município de Bacabeira, Maranhão. Foram avaliadas as características físico-químicas e microbiológicas da água em pontos a montante e a jusante de cada corpo d'água, confrontando os resultados com a Resolução CONAMA nº 357/2005 e com o índice de qualidade da água (IQA). No período de maio a agosto de 2012, foram efetuadas amostragens mensais dos seguintes parâmetros físicos e químicos da água: temperatura, turbidez, pH, sólidos totais (ST), oxigênio dissolvido (OD), demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO5), nitrogênio total, fósforo total (PT) e coliformes fecais. Os resultados mostraram diferenças significantes dos parâmetros entre os pontos a montante e a jusante apenas para as variáveis ST e turbidez, especialmente no Precuá. A análise dos componentes principais (PCA) revelou uma correlação moderada entre as variáveis. Os resultados obtidos enquadraram as águas da maioria dos pontos amostrados predominantemente na classe 3, seguida da classe 2 da Resolução CONAMA nº 357/2005. O IQA evidenciou ligeiras diferenças espaciais e temporais entre os corpos d'água investigados: o igarapé do Rabo de Porco registrou o melhor IQA, enquanto o pior IQA ocorreu na coleta de maio no ponto amostral Precuá a jusante. As informações levantadas servirão de base para avaliações de mudanças nas características e na qualidade dos corpos d'água estudados no decorrer da implantação e operação do empreendimento.


ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess the water quality for the creeks Rabo de Porco and Precuá, located in the area of deployment of the Premium I refinery in the municipality of Bacabeira, Maranhão, Brazil. The physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of the water at points upstream and downstream of each water body were evaluated, comparing the results with the CONAMA Resolution 357/2005 and the water quality index (WQI). In the period from May to August 2012, monthly samples of the following physical and chemical parameters of water were made: temperature, turbidity, pH, total solids, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and fecal coliforms. The results showed significant differences in the parameters between upstream and downstream points, only for the parameters total solids and turbidity, especially for the Precuá creek. The principal component analysis revealed a moderate correlation between the parameters. The data indicated that water from most of the points can be classified in the class 3, followed by the class 2 of the CONAMA Resolution 357/2005. The WQI showed slight spatial and temporal differences between the water bodies investigated: Rabo de Porco creek registered the best WQI, while the worst one occurred in sampling at the downstream Precuá point in May. The information registered will be used as a basis for changes evaluation in characteristics and quality of water bodies studied during the deployment and operation of the enterprise.

Objective: To study and design a software system of filling out and submitting on line for the utilization rate of medical equipment so as to realize automatic analysis for the utilization rate of medical equipment in accordance with the time slot. Methods: SQL Server2000 was used as backend database, and Visual Studi2005 that was object-oriented language was adopted as procedure software to research this system. The filled data of client-side were saved in internal storage array of client, and the array of internal storage could be visited through Socket C of client, and then all of these data were disposably send to server. The Socket of server saved these received data in array of internal storage through the link of Socket C at client-side. And server was used as bridge between client and database through to link active data object of Sql serve2000 database, and it saved these received data of client and visited these data of database, and then returned to client and displayed them at client. Results: The software system realized submission on line for the service situation of medical equipment and saved the times of department that used medical equipment and statistic staff who count utilization rate. Through statistic analysis of computer, the system tremendously reduced the error rate and enhanced the accuracy and work efficiency of statistic work for the utilization rate of medical equipment. Conclusion: The software system can effectively replace the manual filling and calculate the utilization situation of medical equipment, and it can enhance timeliness and accuracy of statistic analysis for the utilization of medical equipment.

RESUMEN

Among the epistemological obstacles described by Gaston Bachelard, we contend that unitary and pragmatic knowledge is correlated to the teleological categories of Ernst Mayr and is the basis for prevailing debate on the notion of "function" in biology. Given the proximity of the aspects highlighted by these authors, we propose to associate the role of teleological thinking in biology and the notion of unitary and pragmatic knowledge as an obstacle to scientific knowledge. Thus, teleological thinking persists acting as an epistemological obstacle in biology, according to Bachelardian terminology. Our investigation led us to formulate the "teleological obstacle," which we consider important for the future of biology and possibly other sciences.


Dentre os obstáculos epistemológicos descritos por Gaston Bachelard, propomos que o conhecimento unitário e pragmático se relaciona com as categorias de teleologia propostas por Ernst Mayr e fundamenta as discussões atuais sobre a noção de "função" em biologia. Dada a proximidade dos aspectos salientados por ambos, propomos relacionar o papel do pensamento teleológico na biologia e a noção do conhecimento unitário e pragmático como obstáculo ao conhecimento científico. O pensamento teleológico, portanto, ainda atua como obstáculo epistemológico na biologia, segundo a terminologia bachelardiana. Nossas investigações nos levaram à formulação do "obstáculo teleológico", que entendemos ser importante para o desenvolvimento da biologia e possivelmente para outras ciências.

RESUMEN

The International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005) require World Health Organization Member States to notify events fulfilling two of four criteria: (1) serious public health impact; (2) unusual or unexpected event; (3) significant risk of international spread; or (4) significant risk of international travel or trade restrictions. In-flight transmission of infections like severe acute respiratory syndrome is well documented. With the enormous amount of air travel today, the risk of increasing in-flight transmission and subsequent international spread of infections are increasing. Prompt notification and information sharing under the IHR mechanism is critical for effective contact tracing and prompt control measures. We report on a case of in-flight exposure to an infection with significant public health risks that was successfully resolved using IHR (2005) guidelines.

Objective To analyze the outcome of childhood B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated (ALL) with SCMC-ALL-2005 protocol. Methods Newly diagnosed B-cell ALL from May 1, 2005 to April 30, 2009 in ifve hospitals were treated and followed up according to SCMC-ALL-2005 protocol. Results A total of 601 cases with newly diagnosed B-cell ALL were enrolled. Among them, 539 cases (89.68%) were followed up until September 30, 2011. In 601 patients, there were 284 low-risk cases (LR group), 231 moderate-risk cases (MR group) and 86 high-risk cases (HR group) which were treated with SCMC-ALL-2005 protocol. The total complete remission rate during the period of induction was 98.84%and 7 cases did not achieve complete remission. The median time of the ifrst event occurring was 35 months (2.94 years). Among 539 cases completing follow-up, 403 cases (74.77%) completed treatment including 223 cases (86.43%) in LR group, 150 cases (73.17%) in MR group and 30 cases (39.47%) in HR group. The rate of cases completing treatment was signiifcantly different among three groups (P=0.001). The completion rate was highest in LR group and lowest in HR group. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rate was (83.3±1.8)%, and the 3-year EFS (event-free survival) rate was (79.2±1.9)%using a Kaplan-Meier method. The 5-year OS rate was (79.5±3.3)%, and the 5-year EFS rate was (70.9±3.7)%. There were signiifcant differences in 3-year EFS rate and 5-year EFS rate among three groups (P<0.05). Conclusions Childhood B-ALL treated with SCMC-ALL-2005 protocol achieved a better therapeutic effect and prognosis. The multi-center collaborative research is useful for the standard treatment of ALL.

Objective:To describe the current situation of IHR ( 2005 ) public health emergency core capacity at the provincial, city, district or county level for health departments in China, discover gaps in the implementation of IHR(2005) public health emergency core capacity, and thereby provide reference for the construction of IHR(2005) public health emergency core capacity. Methods: A survey was conducted from 211 questionnaires of IHR (2005) public health emergency core capacity, which included 7 provinces, 64 cities, and 140 counties ( districts) in the health departments. Results:The indicator of IHR (2005) public health emergency core capacity is suitable for the conditions in China;there is a lack of institution building in China concerning IHR (2005) public health emergency core capacity;there is a decreasing trend at the provincial, city and county ( district) level. Conclusion:Recommen-dations were proposed to strengthen China’s institution building of IHR (2005) public health emergency core capaci-ty, focus on strengthening construction of county (district) level IHR (2005) public health emergency core capacity, strengthen the weak links of the IHR (2005) public health emergency core capacity index, strengthen China’s appli-cability research concerning IHR (2005) public health emergency core capacity.

A Resolução CONAMA 357/2005 estabeleceu condições de qualidade para o enquadramento dos sistemas aquáticos no Brasil. Essa pesquisa avaliou os níveis de não conformidade entre a qualidade de rios e reservatórios do estado de São Paulo e o seu enquadramento para algumas variáveis. Foram analisados dados (n=43.897) de fósforo total, oxigênio dissolvido, nitrato, turbidez e Demanda Bioquímica de Oxigênio de 360 pontos amostrais nas 22 UGRHIs (Unidades de Gerenciamento de Recursos Hídricos) de SP. A situação se apresentou mais crítica para o fósforo total e o oxigênio dissolvido, sobretudo nas UGRHIs industriais. Entre 2005 e 2009, não houve melhoria significativa em relação aos resultados desconformes para algumas variáveis. Há necessidade de investimentos no tratamento de esgotos em nível terciário e de medidas para atenuar a geração de cargas difusas.


The CONAMA Framework Resolution 357/2005 fixed the conditions for establishing water quality categories in Brazilian aquatic systems. We assessed the levels of non-conformity among the water quality in rivers and reservoirs from São Paulo State (SP, Brazil) and their framework. We analyzed data (n=43,897) from total phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, turbidity and Biochemical Oxygen Demand of 360 sampling sites within the 22 UGRHI (Water Resources Management Units) in SP from 2005 to 2009. The situation was unsatisfactory for total phosphorus and dissolved oxygen, mainly in the industrial UGRHI. There was no significant water quality improvement in relation to some of the studied variables within these five years, which indicates the need for directing investments on tertiary domestic wastewater treatment and mitigation of non-point pollution loads.

The prevalence of dyslipidaemia has been increasing in developing countries that are undergoing nutrition transition. However, the association of diet quality and lipid profile has not been well-understood in these countries. The aim of the current study was to compare the ability of three diet quality indices—the Mediterranean diet scale (MDS), healthy eating index-2005 (HEI-2005), and diet quality index-international (DQI-I) in relation to changes in lipid profile between baseline and 6.7 years of follow-up. Baseline data from two 24-hour dietary recalls provided by 469 adults with mean age of 38.7±12.3 years, who were participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study, were analyzed to describe dietary intakes. Data on anthropometry, sociodemography, physical activity, and other lifestyle variables were recorded, and a comparison of baseline and follow-up data revealed changes in the concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). A general linear model was used in assessing changes in lipid profile depending on adherence to diet quality indices at baseline, after adjustment for age, smoking status, waist-circumference, body mass index, physical activity, and energy intake. A significant interaction was observed between scores and sex, and upon stratification, males in the highest quartile score of the HEI-2005 had significantly lower TG changes than those in the lowest quartile, after adjusting for confounders (-8.8 vs 2.9, p=0.038). No association was apparent in females (-0.2 vs 11.2, p=0.297). In addition, a positive association was found between DQI-I and HDL-C (Q1=0.6 vs Q4=-2.0, p=0.044) in males. In both sexes, all these indices were weakly associated with TC while none was associated with LDL-C. It is concluded: adherence to the HEI-2005 recommendations was weakly associated with reduced TG concentration in an urban Iranian adult population. The MDS and DQI-I were not related to change in lipid profile.

Essa deliberação ratifica a preocupação da validação de ferramentas utilizadas no tratamento de dados pelas coleções e laboratórios prestadores de serviços no escopo indireto de suas rotinas, visando à qualidade. A avaliação do Sistema de Banco de Dados da Coleção de Culturas de Fungos de Referência (INFOGER_FUNGOS), do Instituto Nacional de Controle de Qualidade em Saúde (INCQS), de acordo com a norma ISO/IEC nº 17.025:2005, estabelece um marco na qualidade e integridade das informações, economizando tempo na elaboração das estruturas do sistema permitindo ao profissional diretamente envolvido com a coleção e suas particularidades seja seu administrador. Este trabalho teve como objetivo demonstrar um método de avaliação de um sistema de gerenciamento de dados no cumprimento de sua finalidade atingindo níveis de qualidade satisfatórios. Ele servirá de modelo para avaliações de sistemas utilizados em coleções de micro-organismos dentro das normas da Qualidade e Acreditação de seus serviços e produtos, e colaborar no estabelecimento de padrão de dados baseado em experiências brasileiras, adaptado e estendido a modelos existentes.

This study was performed to determine dietary and lifestyle factors associated with hypertension in Korean adolescents. Study subjects were 12~19 years (n = 521) adolescents who participated in the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES III). Subjects were divided into the hypertensive group (HG, n = 102) and normotensive group (NG, n = 419) by '2007 Korean children and adolescents growth standard' and the relationships between blood pressure and physical measurement, nutrients intakes, eating behaviors and health related factors were analyzed. HG showed significantly higher levels in weight, waist circumference and BMI than NG. The amount of nutrient intakes was not different between NG and HG. Index of nutritional quality (INQ) for phosphate was higher in HG compared with NG. In both male and female HG, INQ for iron was higher but INQ for vitamin B1 was lower than NG. HG revealed higher consumption frequencies of snack, yoghurt, and ice cream compared with NG. In eating and behavioral factors, 'dinner with family', 'eat proper amount', 'keep Korean traditional diet', alcohol drinking, and mean alcohol intake were significantly different between the two groups. By logistic regression method, risk factors for hypertension revealed in this study were gender (male), age (15~19 years), BMI (> or = 85 percentile), and not keeping Korean traditional diet. These results suggest that education program for hypertension prevention in adolescents should include eating habits improvement and lifestyle modification as well as weight control.

Este trabalho discute os padrões estabelecidos pelas resoluções Conama 357/2005 e 397/2008 para os compostos de amônia em efluentes e corpos d'água. Os padrões estabelecidos pelas referidas resoluções são confrontados com os estabelecidos pela revogada Resolução Conama 20/1986 e com os padrões norte-americanos. As discussões permitem concluir que a Resolução Conama 357/2005 apresenta avanços em relação aos padrões anteriormente estabelecidos, incorporando a influência do pH sobre distribuição e toxicidade dos compostos amoniacais e alterando a concentração máxima aceitável para a amônia total nos efluentes. A Resolução Conama 397/2008 permite a eliminação do limite para efluentes sanitários. No entanto, as referidas resoluções não consideram a influência da temperatura sobre o comportamento dos compostos de amônia.


This paper discusses the Brazilian National Council legislation (Resolutions 357/2005 and 397/2008) standards for ammonia composts in water and effluents. Standards indicated by resolutions are compared to those from previous Conama Resolution 20/1986 and with North American standards. It is concluded that the new ammonia limit concentrations, from Resolution 357/2005 for water bodies and industrial effluents and the elimination of effluent concentration limits for sanitary effluents, by Resolution 397/2008, represent an advance over previous Brazilian standards by considering the pH influence on the distribution and toxicity of ammonia composts, increasing the maximum total ammonia concentration for industrial effluents and eliminating maximum total concentration limits for sanitary effluents. However, the Resolution 357/2005 does not take into account temperature influence on these distribution and toxicity.

This study was performed to examine the health risks according to the obesity types based upon body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) cutoffs. The subjects were 8,966 adults aged 40-79 years from the 1998, 2001 and 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. The subjects were classified into 4 types of obesity groups based on BMI and WC: BMIWC (BMI > or = 25 kg/m2 and WC >or = 90 cm for males and > or = 85 cm for females), WC (BMI or = 90 cm for males and > or = 85 cm for females), BMI (BMI >or = 25 kg/m2 and < 90 cm for males and < 85 cm for females), normal (BMI < 25 kg/m2 and < 90 cm for males and < 85 cm for females) groups. More than half (n = 5,103) of the subjects fell into the normal group and BMIWC group accounts for 58%, followed by BMI group of 27% and WC group of 16%. Mean ages of subjects were highest in WC group and lowest in BMI group. Blood levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol and glucose, and blood pressures were higher and HDL-cholesterol was lower in 3 types of obesity groups (BMIWC, WC, BMI) than in the normal group. Among the 3 obesity groups, energy and fat intake was significantly higher in BMIWC than in normal group in males, however, no differences were found among the 4 groups in females. The three obesity groups had greater odds ratios for hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia, hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and metabolic syndrome compared to the normal group. Among 3 obesity groups, BMIWC group had the highest odds ratios for hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. Especially BMIWC and WC groups showed the highest odds ratios for diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, suggesting the potential role of abdominal obesity in diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Our data indicate that different types of obesity may show different degrees of health risks. The appropriate selection and use of obesity indexes may be effective for management of obesity as well as obesityrelated diseases.
