RESUMEN

Background: The whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) is a widely distributed and highly harmful plant pest species. The management of B. tabaci has been typically carried out by chemical pesticides. In the last decade however, there has been an increasing interest in natural products, particularly those of plant origin, to control this pest species. In the present work, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of native plants from the flora of the Yucatán peninsula (Acalypha gaumeri, Annona squamosa, Carlowrightia myriantha, Petiveria alliaceae and Trichilia arborea) and the introduced plant Azadirachta indica were collected and evaluated for insecticidal activity against eggs and nymphs Bemisia tabaci. Results: Most of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts showed high insecticidal effects on B. tabaci eggs. The lowest LC50 values were recorded in the aqueous extracts of A. gaumeri (0.39% w/v), A. squamosa (0.36% w/v), P. alliaceae (0.42% w/v) and A. indica (0.30% /v), as well as in the ethanolic extracts of P. alliaceae (2.09 mg mL-1) and T. arborea (2.14 mg mL-1). On the other hand, B. tabaci nymphs were not affected by the aqueous extracts, but were highly sensitive to the ethanolic extracts of the tested plants. The lowest LC50 values were recorded in the ethanolic extracts of P. alliaceae (1.27 mg ml-1) and T. arborea (1.61 mg mL-1). The GC-MS analysis showed that phytol was the major component of the ethanolic extract of P. alliaceae and fatty acids were the major components of ethanolic extract of T. arborea. Conclusions: Overall, results suggest that ethanolic extracts of P. alliaceae and T. arborea leaves showed the highest insecticidal effects on eggs and nymphs B. tabaci. The extracts from P. alliaceae and T. arborea are good candidates to be developed as sources of natural insecticides for the management of immature B. tabaci since their effects were comparable with that showed by the extracts of A. indica, a well-known plant species for its insecticidal activity.

RESUMEN

Essential oil from leaves and roots of Allium schoenoprasum L. (Alliaceae) were analyzed by GC/MS. The oils extracted by hydrodistillation yielded 0.02 percent and 0.03 percent for leaves and roots, respectively. Five (99.12 percent leaves) and four (98.32 percent roots) components were identified being bis-(2-sulfhydryethyl)-disulfide (72.06 percent leaves, 56.47 percent roots) the major constituent on the two oil samples while 2,4,5-trithiahexane (5.45 percent leaves, 15.90 percent roots) and tris (methylthio)-methane (4.01 percent leaves, 12.81 percent roots) were detected in lower amounts.


Los aceites esenciales de hojas y raíces de Allium schoenoprasum L. (Alliaceae fueron analizados por CG/EM. La extracción por hidrodestilación mostró un rendimiento de 0.02 por ciento y 0.03 por ciento para las hojas y raíces, respectivamente. Cinco (99.12 por ciento hojas) y cuatro (98.32 por ciento raíces) compuestos fueron identificados siendo el bis-(2-sulfidietil)-disulfuro (72.06 por ciento hojas, 56.47 por ciento raíces) el compuesto mayoritario en los dos aceites mientras que 2,4,5-tritiahexano (5.45 por ciento hojas, 15.90 por ciento raíces) y tris (metilthio)-metano (4.01 por ciento hojas, 12.81 por ciento raíces) fueron observados en menores cantidades.

RESUMEN

Objective: To assess in vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil isolated from fresh rhizomes of garlic (Allium sativum) of the family Alliaceae in an yield of 0.2% (v/w). Methods:2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Nitrogen oxide scavenging, reducing power and毬-carotene bleaching assays were conducted. BHT and gallic acid were kept as standards.Results:IC50 values observed for DPPH and nitric oxide scavenging assays were 0.5 mg/mL and 50毺g/mL respectively. In reducing power assay absorbance increased linearly with increasing concentration of the oil, in毬-carotene bleaching method also there is 84% bleaching in first one hour and it decreased to 45 % by the completion of second hour. Conclusions: The results clearly indicate garlic essential oil is effective in scavenging free radical and has the potential to be powerful antioxidant.
