RESUMEN
Abstract Introduction: Despite sensory enrichment being critical for ensuring the well-being of captive wild animals, smells are not being included in enrichment protocols for birds. For this group, neophobia can be a problem when it comes to implementing new enrichment devices. Objective: To explore how participation in an olfactory enrichment and latency times varies between bird taxonomic groups (Amazona spp. / Ara spp. / Ramphastos spp.). Methods: We exposed 257 birds to a scent enrichment, and we recorded which individuals engaged with it and the time they took to interact with it. Results: We discovered that participation by toucans in the enrichment was higher compared to amazons and macaws. Furthermore, latency time to interact with the enrichment was higher in amazons that in the other species. Our findings could suggest that toucans are neophilic species which could benefit from higher exploration rates. Amazons on the contrary seem to be particularly neophobic, possibly because of their less opportunistic feeding habits compared to toucans and their higher vulnerability to predation compared to macaws. Conclusion: These results point out that toucans would be more inclined to engage in environmental enrichments, while a more natural design using smells inside familiar objects could be a more successful enrichment for psittacids.

Introduction: Gram-positive staphylococci are responsible for over 90% of cases of postoperative infectious endophthalmitis, with Staphylococcus epidermidis accounting for approximately 70% of isolated microorganisms. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between S. epidermidis virulence and severity of endophthalmitis in an animal model. Methodology: New Zealand albino rabbits were divided into two groups and administered 100 colony-forming units of S. epidermidis strains. In the virulent group, four rabbits received a multi-antibiotic resistant, mecA, ica, and atlE gene carrying S. epidermidis strain, from a patient´s conjuntival microbiota and three a biofilm-forming S. epidermidis ATCC 35984. In the non-virulent group, five rabbits were inoculated with a strain sensitive to all tested antibiotics and lacking mecA, ica, and atlE genes, also from a patient and three rabbits received the non-producer biofilm S. epidermidis ATCC 29122. Clinical and ultrasound examinations were conducted every three hours until endophthalmitis symptoms appeared, followed by daily clinical assessments. Histological evaluations were performed 15 days post-inoculation. Results: The less virulent group displayed milder inflammation and reduced intraocular damage in comparison to the more virulent group based on clinical and ultrasound observations. Nevertheless, histopathological analysis revealed similar inflammation in all groups, 15 days post-inoculation. Discussion: Less virulent S. epidermidis strains induced less severe inflammation as observed through clinical and ultrasound assessments. However, long-term histopathological assessments showed effects comparable to those seen with the more virulent strain.
Introducción: Gram-positive staphylococci are responsible for over 90% of cases of postoperative infectious endophthalmitis, with Staphylococcus epidermidis accounting for approximately 70% of isolated microorganisms.

Chagas disease is an infection caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by the vector Triatoma dimidiata, known in El Salvador as "chinche picuda". This disease has always been of scientific interest in animal models. Objective. Identify the effect of Trypanozoma cruzi infection in mice of different strains (BALB/c and NIH) and sex. Methodology. Eight groups were established: four infected with Trypanosoma cruzi and four uninfected groups, distributed by strain and sex, with five mice per group. The body weight of the mice was recorded for six weeks. In addition, blood samples from the infected groups were prepared on slides for parasitemia counts. At the end of the study, the spleen and heart were extracted from both groups for statistical analyses. Results. The infected groups showed an increase in weight compared to their control groups. In the NIH strain, females had higher parasitemia, whereas in the BALB/c strain, males had higher parasitemia. The organs of the infected groups were significantly larger compared to those of the control groups, except in the heart of the BALB/c strain. Regarding organ weight, significant differences were observed only in the heart of the male BALB/c strain, while the opposite was true for the spleen. Conclusion. Males of the BALB/c strain are more susceptible to Trypanosoma cruzi, presenting higher levels of parasitemia among the groups studied.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant public health concern worldwide, necessitating effective research models to elucidate its pathophysiology and develop therapeutic interventions. Animal models play a crucial role in TBI research, offering valuable insights into injury mechanisms and potential treatments. However, selecting the appropriate model can be challenging due to diverse array of available options and their respective advantages and limitations. In this comprehensive review, we examine four commonly used animal models of TBI: the weight drop, fluid percussion, cortical impact, and blast injury models. Each model is characterized by distinct injury mechanisms, allowing researchers simulate various aspects of TBI pathology. We discuss the unique advantages and disadvantages of each model, providing insights into their applications and considerations for model selection based on research objectives and outcome measures. Furthermore, we highlight emerging directions in TBI modelling, emphasizing the importance of refining and innovating models to replicate the complexity of human TBI. By critically evaluating and understanding the subtlety of different TBI models, researchers can make informed decisions to enhance the translational potential of preclinical TBI research and ultimately improve clinical outcomes for TBI patients.

ABSTRACT Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is an endemic disease distributed worldwide distribution, it is responsible for reproductive disorders with high economic and sanitary impact. Serological diagnostics allow for estimating the spread of the virus in an unvaccinated population. A cross-sectional study was developed to determine the prevalence of BVD in the dairy area of the high mountains of Pamplona, which included identifying related risk factors. Three hundred twenty-four blood samples were collected from non-vaccinated cattle from 82 farms, according to Law 1774 and the ethics committee of the University of Pamplona. Forty-nine samples from 18 farms were positive with an individual prevalence of 15.12% and for farms of 21.95%. The questionnaire indicated that most of the farms had less than 20 animals, had no records and natural mating was the main reproductive system. The contact of cows with bulls from other farms constituted a risk factor. The prevalence for the region was lower than found in other studies in the country. Some management conditions should be improved to avoid risk factors and prevent the spread of the disease. It is important to determine the presence of persistently infected animals, for their subsequent replacement, as well as to implement systematic records on farms and to test new animals arriving on farms.
Abstract: There is an increasing interest in microbiota studies due to their relevance in physiological processes such as animal development and productivity. In addition, it its involved in the microbiota-intestinebrain axis that regulates the nervous system to the intestine and vice versa. This paper is aimed at identifying the importance of the broilers and laying hens' gastrointestinal microbiota and its relationship with diverse physiological processes that intervene in the development, productivity, behavior, and health. There are 17 filos of bacteria within the poultry gastrointestinal tract, which are site dependent and have specific functions (Example; crop: Lactobacillus, Enterobacteriaceae; proventriculus: Clostridiaceae, Enterococcus; intestine: Escherichia, Streptococcus). In addition, different factors affect the development of microbiota such as the feeding program, handling, kind of substrate, stocking density, among others. There are several potentially pathogenic microorganisms that impact microbiota negatively and may reach the final consumer such as Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella enteritidis and Escherichia coli. Therefore, it is important to continue supporting poultry microbiota research and areas of opportunity to improve poultry production.

Abstract Few works explore the assessments that laypeople make about practices that involve animals. This study tests the multiple sorting tasks (MST) as a method to explore perceptions of animals. 115 people of different genders, and age groups, and the condition of owning a pet or not, assessed practices that make use of animals. The inquiry was made through an interview based on a conceptualisation of the free sortings of 18 cards with text and 18 images that contain practices involving animals, and whether the condition of having a pet or not influenced their conceptualisations. A multidimensional scaling analysis (MSA), indicates that people classify the practices based on the function animals have for society, however are worried about the conditions in which animals are used. The results discuss the importance that laypeople give to the ethics of animal uses, and the role of having a pet or not, showing that young people are more sensitive to the welfare of animals. The results conclude that the participants conceptualise images differently according to whether they are asked to evaluate the practice represented only by text; using images induces more moral conceptualisations than text. This demonstrates the utility of the MST and provides theoretical and practical implications for exploring people's perceptions and educating them on animal welfare.

Animal bites are a leading cause of injury among children, of which dog bites contribute significantly to the burden of Rabies in the world. This was a case report of a 7-year-old migrant girl child who was admitted to the casualty as a victim of multiple stray dog bite injuries. The child presented with multiple and extensive lesions all over the body. Trauma related to animal bites cause not just physical pain and suffering but also emotional stress and carries the risk of Rabies which is a highly fatal disease. Prompt management of the case with post exposure prophylaxis against Rabies needs to be done immediately, along with wound management to ensure good treatment results and patient outcome. This report presents the case of a child who sustained multiple stray dog bite injuries all over the body. Patient was followed up for one month, showed good wound healing and recovery.
RESUMEN
Abstract Introduction: Even though only a few species are considered to be dangerous, pests or vectors, the majority of invertebrates produce a feeling of aversion in humans. This has contributed to the delay in the development of ethical considerations as regards this group in contrast with vertebrates, with the exception of cephalopods. Objective: In the present study, we provide an overview of the current situation on animal ethics and welfare in order to contribute to the development of a framework for ensuring invertebrate welfare. Methods: Today, animal welfare is multidisciplinary in nature to a very high degree as it includes ethology, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, nutrition, cognitive-neural, veterinary medicine, and ethics. Animal welfare is a complex concept, difficult to achieve successfully from one perspective. Results: As a consequence, we propose to include the five domains (nutrition, environment, health, behaviour and mental state) along with the three conceptions (basic health and functioning, affective state and natural living), as well as the 5R Principle (Replace, Reduction, Refinement, Respect and Responsibility) in seeking to achieve a comprehensive welfare state. Conclusions: We consider that in both research and animal production, the individual and collective ethical concerns coexist and, in fact, the main moral concern to account for is the collective one and that, within that collective view, the individual moral concern should be applied with responsibility and respect for the individual. Finally, we propose a practical example of invertebrate welfare production in sea urchin aquaculture with the aim of including animal production of invertebrates in this important discussion.

ObjectiveTo explore the establishment and evaluation methods of the rat model of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in coronary heart disease with the syndrome of Qi and Yin deficiency by sleep deprivation (SD) combined with isoproterenol (ISO) and preliminarily explore its biological basis. MethodForty SD rats were assigned into normal (no treatment), SD (treatment in modified multi-platform water environment for 96 h), ISO (subcutaneous injection of ISO at 100 mg·kg-1 once every other day for a total of 2 times), and SD+ISO (injection of 100 mg·kg-1 ISO after SD for 72 h and 96 h) groups. The cardiac function was detected by small animal echocardiography. The serum levels of creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) were measured by biochemical methods. The pathological changes of the myocardial tissue were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining. The general state, body weight, grip strength, body temperature, behaviors in open field test, serum levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), cAMP/cGMP ratio, red (R), green (G), blue (B) values of the tongue surface, and pulse amplitude were observed and measured to evaluate the modeling results. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to determine the serum levels of interleukin-18 (IL-18), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), triiodothyronine (T3), tetraiodothyronine (T4), cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4), and cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8). ResultIn terms of disease indicators, the ISO and SD+ISO groups had lower cardiac function indicators than the normal group (P<0.01). The levels of CK, CM-MB, LDH and cTnT elevated in each model group compared with the normal group (P<0.01). The pathological changes of myocardial tissue were obvious in the ISO and SD+ISO groups. In terms of syndrome indicators, compared with the normal group, the SD and SD+ISO groups showed decreased body weight at each time point (P<0.01), and the ISO group showed decreased body weight at the time points of 48 h and 72 h (P<0.05, P<0.01). The paw temperature and rectal temperature increased in the SD group (P<0.01). The model groups showed weakened grasp strength, lowered R, G, and B values of the tongue surface (P<0.01), prolonged immobility time (P<0.01), reduced total distance and number of entering the central area (P<0.01), decreased average speed (P<0.05, P<0.01), and increased cAMP and cGMP (P<0.05, P<0.01). The cAMP/cGMP ratio was increased in the SD+ISO group (P<0.01), and the pulse amplitude was decreased in the SD and SD+ISO groups (P<0.01). In terms of serological indicators, compared with the normal group, the levels of IL-18, TNF-α, SOD and MDA were significantly increased in the ISO and SD+ISO groups (P<0.01), the CRF, ACTH, CORT, T3, T4, CD4 and CD8 in the model groups were increased (P<0.05, P<0.01). ConclusionSleep deprivation for 96 h combined with high-dose ISO can successfully establish a rat model of acute myocardial infarction in coronary heart disease with the syndrome of Qi and Yin deficiency. The model evaluation system can be built with disease indicators of western medicine, histopathological indicators, macroscopic indicators of traditional Chinese medicine, and serological indicators.

Objective:To explore the antitumor effect of ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and its mechanism. Methods:The 6-week-old female BALB/c mice were selected, and the bilateral murine subcutaneous B-cell lymphoma model was established with murine B-cell lymphoma A20 cells. The subcutaneous tumor-bearing mice were randomly divided into untreated group (without treatment), ADU-S100 in situ vaccine treatment group (intratumoral injection of interferon gene stimulating factor agonist ADU-S100), doxorubicin in situ vaccine treatment group (intratumoral injection of doxorubicin), and ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine treatment group (intratumoral injection of ADU-S100 and doxorubicin) by using random number table method, with 5 mice in each group. The right tumors of the bilateral subcutaneous tumor-bearing mice were defined as proximal tumors, and the left tumors of the bilateral subcutaneous tumor-bearing mice were defined as distal tumors. Only the proximal tumors were treated via the intratumoral route, and the distal tumors were not treated. On day 23 after tumor inoculation, the percentages of CD11c + dendritic cells (DC), CD8 + CD11c + DC and CD80 + CD11c + DC in the spleen of mice in each group were detected by flow cytometry. The splenocytes of mice in each group were stimulated with A20 tumor cell lysate in vitro, the percentages of 5'-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine-positive (EdU +) cells and tumor necrosis factor-α-positive (TNF-α +) cells in CD8 + T cells in each in situ vaccine treatment group were detected by flow cytometry, and the killing effect of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) in each group was measured by using the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) cytotoxicity assay kit. The mice treated with ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine were intraperitoneally injected with anti-mouse CD8α (clone 53-6.7) mAb or isotype control on days 7, 12 and 17 after tumor inoculation to eliminate CD8 + cells. On day 23 after tumor inoculation, the proximal and distal tumor volumes of mice in the ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine combined with anti-mouse CD8α (clone 53-6.7) mAb or isotype control treatment group were measured, the percentages of CD8 + T cells and CD8 + CD11c + DC in the spleen of tumor-bearing mice in these two groups were detected by flow cytometry, and the infiltration of CD8 + T cells in the tumor tissues from these two groups was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. Results:On days 11, 14, 17, 20 and 23 after tumor inoculation, the proximal and distal tumor volumes of mice in each treated group were lower than those in the untreated group (all P < 0.05). The proportions of CD11c + DC in the spleen of the untreated group, ADU-S100 in situ vaccine treatment group, doxorubicin in situ vaccine treatment group and ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine treatment group were (4.92±0.63)%, (7.54±0.84)%, (7.45±0.86)% and (11.63±0.85)%, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant ( F = 72.30, P < 0.001); the proportions of CD8 + CD11c + DC were (1.36±0.34)%, (4.02±0.43)%, (4.22±0.61)% and (6.11±0.73)%, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant ( F = 76.09, P < 0.001); the proportions of CD80 + CD11c + DC were (0.51±0.24)%, (1.69±0.23)%, (1.82±0.25)% and (4.09±0.39)%, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant ( F = 167.40, P < 0.001). The CTL responses and the proportion of EdU + cells and TNF-α + cells in CD8 + T cells in each in situ vaccine treatment group were higher than those in the untreated group (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, the enhanced CTL responses and the increased proportion of EdU + cells and TNF-α + cells in CD8 + T cells were observed in the ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine treatment group as compared to the ADU-S100 in situ vaccine treatment group and doxorubicin in situ vaccine treatment group (all P < 0.05). The proportions of CD8 + T cells and CD8 + CD11c + DC in the spleen of mice treated with ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine and anti-mouse CD8α mAb were lower than those in ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine and isotype control group (both P < 0.05) and both proximal and distal tumor volumes of mice treated with ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine and anti-mouse CD8α mAb were larger than those in ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine and isotype control group (both P < 0.05). Conclusions:ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine can induce profound regression of proximal tumors in bilateral murine subcutaneous B-cell lymphoma model and generate systemic immune responses capable of partially inhibiting distant tumor growth, and the antitumor efficacy of ADU-S100/doxorubicin in situ vaccine may require CD8 + CD11c + DC-mediated CD8 + T cell immune responses.

RESUMEN
Objective:To screen the active components, target genes and signaling pathways of Shaoteng Decoction in the treatment of Sjogren's syndrome by network pharmacology; To conduct relevant experimental verification to explore the mechanism of action of Shaoteng Decoction in the treatment of Sjogren's syndrome. Methods:The active components and targets of Shaoteng Decoction were collected by retrieving TCMSP. The target genes of Sjogren's syndrome were collected through the GeneCards database. The intersection targets of drugs and diseases were obtained by using Venn. The intersection targets were imported into the STRING database to obtain PPI networks, and the "drug-active component -therapeutic target-disease" network was constructed by Cytospace 3.7.2 software. The DAVID database was used for GO function enrichment analysis and KEGG pathway analysis. The 18 NOD mice were divided into model group, TCM group, hydroxychloroquine group, with 6 mice in each group, and 6 Balb/C mice were set as normal control group. TCM group was gavaged with 2.3 g/kg of Shaoteng Decoction, hydroxychloroquine group was gavaged with 60 mg/kg of hydroxychloroquine, and model group and normal control group were gavaged with equal volume of deionized water once a day for 4 consecutive weeks. The daily water intake of mice during the administration period was recorded, the pathological changes of submandibular gland tissue were observed by HE staining, and the levels of serum inflammatory factors IL-17 and TNF-α were determined by ELISA method.Results:39 main active components of Shaoteng Decoction, 1 062 targets of Sjogren's syndrome, and 64 targets of drug and disease intersection were obtained, including TNF, IL6, NCOA1, AKT1, TP53, etc. The treatment targets of Sjogren's syndrome mainly affected biological processes such as response to bacterium and cellular response to lipid, and regulated TNF-α pathway and IL-17 signaling pathway. The experimental results showed that the levels of TNF-α and IL-17 in the TCM group were lower than those in the model group ( P<0.05). Conclusion:Shaoteng Decoction can regulate IL-17 and TNF-α signaling pathways, inhibit inflammation, delay submandibular gland disruption, and alleviate the symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome.
