RESUMO Objetivo analisar a eficácia de um plano de intervenção terapêutica por meio de um programa de treinamento auditivo cognitivo já existente, adaptado para adultos, após um ano de infecção por COVID-19. Métodos participaram do estudo 13 sujeitos, entre 18 e 59 anos de idade, quatro do gênero masculino e nove do gênero feminino. Todos foram submetidos a um questionário, inspeção visual do meato acústico externo, audiometria tonal liminar, logoaudiometria e medidas de imitância acústica, como procedimentos de seleção. Foram realizados, na avaliação e na reavaliação, os seguintes procedimentos: avaliação do processamento auditivo central, avaliação neuropsicológica breve-NEUPSILIN, Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale e o Potencial Cognitivo - P300, com estímulo de fala. O treinamento auditivo cognitivo foi realizado em seis sessões consecutivas, em campo aberto, com duração de, aproximadamente, 50 minutos. Em todas as análises foi considerado o nível de significância de 5% (p≤0,05). Resultados na comparação das variáveis entre os períodos, pré e pós-intervenção, houve diferença estatisticamente significativa no Teste Dicótico de Dígitos (p = 0,009), no Teste Padrão de Frequência (p = 0,020) e no Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (p = 0,001). Houve tendência à significância (p < 0,10) no teste Gap in Noise e na Atenção Total. Conclusão o treinamento auditivo cognitivo demonstrou ser uma estratégia terapêutica eficaz para o tratamento de adultos com queixas de compreensão de fala e de cognição após infecção por COVID-19.


ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the effectiveness of a therapeutic intervention plan through an existing cognitive auditory training program, adapted for adults, after one year of COVID-19 infection. Methods 13 subjects, between 18 and 59 years old, four males and nine females participated in the study. All underwent anamnesis, visual inspection of the external acoustic meatus, pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry and acoustic immitance measurements as selection procedures. For the research, the following procedures were carried out in the evaluation and reassessment: evaluation of central auditory processing, brief neuropsychological evaluation - NEUPSILIN, Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale and the Cognitive Potential - P300 with speech stimulus. Cognitive auditory training was carried out in six consecutive sessions, in an open field, lasting approximately 50 minutes. In all analyses, a significance level of 5% (p≤0.05) was considered. Results When comparing the variables between the periods, pre and post intervention, there was a statistically significant difference in the Dichotic Digit Test (p = 0.009), in the Frequency Pattern Test (p = 0.020) and in Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (p = 0.001). And a tendency to significance (p < 0.10) in the Gap in Noise test and Total Attention. Conclusion Cognitive auditory training proved to be an effective therapeutic strategy for the treatment of adults with speech comprehension and cognition complaints after COVID-19 infection.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to identify auditory training approaches used in the pediatric population with psychiatric diagnoses and to characterize the contexts in which the intervention took place, as well as protocols and discernment of the results. Methods: a search was carried out in four databases, using the fixed terms "auditory training" OR "auditory rehabilitation". Regarding the sampling, there was a considerable range of diagnoses, signs and symptoms, including the most common ones. Articles published until August 2018 whose population did not present hearing loss were selected; articles whose subjects had made use of any personal sound amplification products, presented otitis or had any isolated diagnosis of auditory processing disorder, were excluded. Results: 16 articles out of the 103 references found, met the inclusion criteria. The samplings studied were children and adolescents with learning, language or reading disorders, dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. The bottom-up intervention and the combined approach (bottom-up and top-down), in the formal context, were the most frequent approaches, whose results led to the improvement in linguistic, metalinguistic and auditory skills. The amount and frequency of sessions, as well as their duration varied. Conclusion: the heterogeneity of auditory training techniques diversified the results. However, it seems there is a potential for recommending auditory training in the reviewed population.


RESUMO Objetivo: identificar as abordagens de treinamento auditivo utilizadas na população infantil com diagnósticos psiquiátricos, caracterizar os contextos de intervenção, protocolos e discernimento dos desfechos. Métodos: busca realizada em quatro bases de dados, utilizando as expressões fixas "auditory training" OR "auditory rehabilitation" e, quanto à amostragem, variaram-se aos mais comuns diagnósticos, sinais e sintomas. Foram selecionados artigos publicados até agosto de 2018, com população sem perda auditiva e excluídos artigos com amostra com uso de dispositivos de amplificação sonora, otites ou diagnóstico isolado de Transtorno do Processamento Auditivo. Resultados: foram identificadas 103 referências, dentre as quais 16 preencheram os critérios de inclusão. As amostragens estudadas foram de crianças e adolescentes com distúrbios de aprendizagem, linguagem e leitura, dislexia, transtorno do déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, transtorno do espectro autista e esquizofrenia. As intervenções com a abordagem bottom-up e combinada (bottom-up e top-down), no contexto formal, foram as mais frequentes, cujos resultados direcionaram a melhora em habilidades auditivas, linguísticas e metalinguísticas. O número e frequência de sessões, assim como, a duração (tempo) foram diversificadas. Conclusão: a heterogeneidade das técnicas de treinamento auditivo diversificou os resultados, entretanto, parece existir um potencial para recomendação do treinamento auditivo na população abordada.

Abstract Introduction Communication breakdown, a consequence of hearing impairment (HI), is being fought by fitting amplification devices and providing auditory training since the inception of audiology. The advances in both audiology and rehabilitation programs have led to the advent of computer-based auditory training programs (CBATPs). Objective To review the existing literature documenting the evidence-based CBATPs for children with HIs. Since there was only one such article, we also chose to review the commercially available CBATPs for children with HI. The strengths and weaknesses of the existing literature were reviewed in order to improve further researches. Data Synthesis Google Scholar and PubMed databases were searched using various combinations of keywords. The participant, intervention, control, outcome and study design (PICOS) criteria were used for the inclusion of articles. Out of 124 article abstracts reviewed, 5 studies were shortlisted for detailed reading. One among them satisfied all the criteria, and was taken for review. The commercially available programs were chosen based on an extensive search in Google. The reviewed article was wellstructured, with appropriate outcomes. The commercially available programs cover many aspects of the auditory training through a wide range of stimuli and activities. Conclusions There is a dire need for extensive research to be performed in the field of CBATPs to establish their efficacy, also to establish them as evidence-based practices.

Aural rehabilitation is defined as a comprehensive service which includes hearing aid fitting, hearing aid orientation, auditory training, and informational/educational counseling for people with hearing loss in order to reduce deficits of auditory function, difficulty in communication, and limited social activity, and ultimately to enhance their quality of life. Although it is well known that auditory training among a large scope of the aural rehabilitation is critical to improve residual hearing of hearing-impaired adults and/or older adults, there are some limitations to conduct it in the clinic in terms of time consuming and individual difference. In this review paper, we introduce two of the most popular web-based auditory training programs, namely Listening and Communication Enhancement And customized learning: Exercises for Aural Rehabilitation. The paper analyzes their purpose, contents, effect (or benefit) of auditory training, and clinical application, while arguing their pros and cons. In conclusion, we discuss a necessary of developing auditory training platforms for the hearing-impaired adults and older adults, and then of forging systematic web-based auditory training tools with a low-cost and high efficiency because aging population is rapidly increasing in Korea.

@#Difficulty of understanding speech in noise among the elderly necessitates the need for Auditory Training which has made a renewal of interest in the last decade with the auditory training applications. This interest is perhaps spurred by advances in computer-based technology. In computer-based auditory training, speech signals are considered as auditory training stimuli where input speech signals need to be verified prior to training as the speech signals are mixed with noise signals. Computer-based Auditory Training System can be embedded with input speech verifying module. Input speech verifying module is employed with speech and noise separator simulator. This simulator needs to guarantee accurate separation of speech from noise signals. Therefore, in this research, Exploratory Projection Pursuit (EPP) technique under semi-Blind Source Separation (BSS) method is intended to separate the speech source signals which are mixed with competing speech (multitalker speech babble). This training uses Malay language based sentences which differ in word length and hence number of sample values. The experimental simulation considers two-channel random, linear mixing of speech sources and competing speech. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of source separation using the anticipated EPP technique for various sample values of speech signals which varies in time duration due to word length dissimilarity. Simulation results show that EPP technique is feasible for source separation. As a consequence, high correlation value of r ≥ 0.99 is obtained between extracted speech signal and original speech signal for all categories of speech signals. It is further verified by the maximum nongaussianity of extracted speech signal which has high kurtosis value of 32 approximately.

Objective To observe the effect of TOMATIS auditory training on improving cognitive and post-traumatic stress disorder in patients after breast cancer chemotherapy. Methods Eighty invasive ductal carcinoma of breast cancer patients with cognition and psychological disorders were selected in the breast department of Tangshan People's Hospital from October 2016 to September 2017. All patients were randomly divided into control group ( n=40) and experimental group ( n=40) . The experimental group was given the TOMATIS high and low audio frequency auditory training,and the control group was given ordinary music training. Before and after the intervention, the Chinese version of the Montreal cognitive assessment scale ( MoCA) and the post-traumatic stress disorder scale ( PTSD-SS) were evaluated for both groups of pa-tients. OBJECTIVES: Here we present the Listening Cube, an auditory training program for children and adults receiving cochlear implants, developed during the clinical practice at the KIDS Royal Institute for the Deaf in Belgium. We provide information on the content of the program as well as guidance as to how to use it. METHODS: The Listening Cube is a three-dimensional auditory training model that takes the following into consideration: the sequence of auditory listening skills to be trained, the variety of materials to be used, and the range of listening environments to be considered. During auditory therapy, it is important to develop training protocols and materials to provide rapid improvement over a relatively short time period. Moreover, effectiveness and the general real-life applicability of these protocols to various users should be determined. RESULTS: Because this publication is not a research article, but comes out of good daily practice, we cannot state the main results of this study. We can only say that this auditory training model is very successful. Since the first report was published in the Dutch language in 2003, more than 200 therapists in Belgium and the Netherlands followed a training course elected to implement the Listening Cube in their daily practice with children and adults with a hearing loss, especially in those wearing cochlear implants. CONCLUSION: The Listening Cube is a tool to aid in planning therapeutic sessions created to meet individual needs, which is often challenging. The three dimensions of the cube are levels of perception, practice material, and practice conditions. These dimensions can serve as a visual reminder of the task analysis and of other considerations that play a role in structuring therapy sessions.

The purpose of this study was to determine the middle latency response (MLR) characteristics (latency and amplitude) in children with (central) auditory processing disorder [(C)APD], categorized as such by their performance on the central auditory test battery, and the effects of these characteristics after auditory training. Thirty children with (C)APD, 8 to 14 years of age, were tested using the MLR-evoked potential. This group was then enrolled in an 8-week auditory training program and then retested at the completion of the program. A control group of 22 children without (C)APD, composed of relatives and acquaintances of those involved in the research, underwent the same testing at equal time intervals, but were not enrolled in the auditory training program. Before auditory training, MLR results for the (C)APD group exhibited lower C3-A1 and C3-A2 wave amplitudes in comparison to the control group [C3-A1, 0.84 µV (mean), 0.39 (SD - standard deviation) for the (C)APD group and 1.18 µV (mean), 0.65 (SD) for the control group; C3-A2, 0.69 µV (mean), 0.31 (SD) for the (C)APD group and 1.00 µV (mean), 0.46 (SD) for the control group]. After training, the MLR C3-A1 [1.59 µV (mean), 0.82 (SD)] and C3-A2 [1.24 µV (mean), 0.73 (SD)] wave amplitudes of the (C)APD group significantly increased, so that there was no longer a significant difference in MLR amplitude between (C)APD and control groups. These findings suggest progress in the use of electrophysiological measurements for the diagnosis and treatment of (C)APD.

BACKGROUND: hearing impairment has a negative impact on communication. This impact can be minimized by hearing aids fitting and auditory training. AIM: to verify the effectiveness of auditory training in elderly individuals, new users of hearing aids, regarding the benefit in fitting. METHOD: forty-two individuals with mild to moderate neurosensorial hearing loss, ranging in age from 60 to 90 years, were selected. Individuals were new users of bilateral hearing aids and were divided in two groups: Experimental Group (EG) and Sham Group (SG). The EG was submitted to training in an acoustic cabin during six sessions. Both groups were assessed through the following tests: Speech in Noise, Dichotic Digits and the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit Aphab self-assessment questionnaire, without the hearing aids, four and eight weeks after they were fitted. RESULTS: there was a statistically significant difference between the groups in both of the used tests, and for the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit Aphab in the second and third assessments in the sub-scales of: Communication Easiness, Reverberation and Environmental Noise. CONCLUSION: auditory training favored the improvement in the auditory processing abilities and benefited the hearing aid fitting process.


TEMA: a deficiência auditiva acarreta dificuldades na comunicação, as quais podem ser minimizadas por meio da adaptação de próteses auditivas e do treinamento auditivo. OBJETIVO: o objetivo geral deste estudo foi verificar a efetividade do treinamento auditivo em idosos novos usuários de próteses auditivas, quanto ao benefício no processo de adaptação. MÉTODO: foram selecionados 42 indivíduos, portadores de deficiência auditiva neurossensorial de grau leve a moderado, com idades entre 60 e 90 anos, novos usuários de próteses auditivas bilaterais, distribuídos em dois grupos: Grupo Experimental (GE) e Grupo Sham (GS). O GE foi submetido a um programa de treinamento auditivo em cabina acústica durante seis sessões. Ambos os grupos foram avaliados com os testes de Fala com Ruído, Escuta com Dígitos, e questionário de auto-avaliação Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB), em três momentos: sem próteses (primeira avaliação), quatro semanas (segunda avaliação), e oito semanas (terceira avaliação), após a adaptação das próteses. RESULTADOS: houve diferença estatisticamente significante para os dois testes aplicados, e para o questionário Aphab (quanto ao benefício) na segunda e na terceira avaliações, nas subescalas: Facilidade de Comunicação, Reverberação e Ruído Ambiental. CONCLUSÃO: o programa de treinamento auditivo em cabina acústica foi efetivo com relação ao benefício durante o processo de adaptação das próteses auditivas.
