Abstract Oil-in-water photoprotective nanoemulsions (NEs) were developed using Babassu (BBS) lipophilic extract, nonionic surfactants, and low concentrations of organic sunscreens by ultrasonic processing. BBS extract was chosen due to its suitable physicochemical properties (acidity index, peroxide index, refraction index, and relative density) and predominance of saturated fatty acids, identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which promote biological activities and high oxidative stability. NEs were characterized by mean droplet size, morphology, polydispersity index (PdI), pH, and organoleptic properties, and the physical stability of the NEs was evaluated for 120 days at room temperature. The sun protection factor (SPF) was determined, and the photostability and in vitro cytotoxicity assays were performed for NEs. All NEs remained stable for 120 days, with a droplet size <150 nm and a monomodal distribution profile. The pH values were compatible with the skin's pH. NE3 showed a spherical morphology, with a mean droplet size of 125.15 ± 0.16 nm and PdI of 0.145 ± 0.032. NE3 containing BBS extract and sunscreens presented an SPF of 35.5 ± 3.0, was photostable after 6 h of radiation and was non-cytotoxic to fibroblast cells. Thus, NE3 could be considered a promising formulation for developing synergic plant-extract sunscreen photoprotective products for the market

HIGHLIGHTS Production of lipid nanoemulsions (<100 nm) of industrial interest with low energy demand. The antioxidant properties of babassu oil have been improved and the nanoemulsions are not cytotoxic. Babassu oil is a food and medicinal product. The nanoemulsion is strategic for the developed of new antioxidants phytotherapeutics.


Abstract Background: Babassu oil is an extract from a Brazilian native coconut (Orbignya phalerata Martius) and is used both as a food and a medicinal product. Methods: we produced two babassu oil nanoemulsions and evaluated them regarding their nanoscopic stability, antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity.The nanoemulsions were characterized by Dynamic Light Scattering, and their stability was investigated for 120 days. The antioxidant activity was assessed by Spectroscopy Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, and the cytotoxicity was assessed by a colorimetric method (MTT) with the NIH/3T3 cell lineage. Results: the results showed nanoemulsions with average hydrodynamic diameter lower than 100 nm (p(0.001).and a polydispersity index of less than 0.3 (p(0.001), indicating monodisperse systems and good stability at room temperature. The exposure of nanoemulsions at varying pH revealed that the isoelectric point was at 3.0, and the images obtained by Transmission Electron Microscopy showed spherical droplets with a size 27 nm. The antioxidant activity showed that the babassu nanoemulsions exposed to free radicals had a better response when compared to the oil free samples. The cell viability assays showed low toxicity of the formulation with viability over 92% (p(0.05). Conclusion: babassu oil nanoformulations showed low polydispersity and kinetic stability with effective antioxidant action. Therefore, they can be promising for application in the food industry or as antioxidant phytotherapeutics.

RESUMEN

Este estudo tem como objetivo refletir sobre os modos de vida e de luta de mulheres quebradeiras de coco piauienses junto ao Movimento Interestadual de Quebradeiras de Coco Babaçu (MIQCB). Tratou-se de um estudo cartográfico realizado em três comunidades da zona rural da cidade de Esperantina, no Piauí, onde está localizada a sede regional do MIQCB. Para a produção dos dados, utilizamos como recursos a intervenção fotográfica e a produção de narrativas de vida. Assim, destacamos, por um lado, as relações de poder com os patrões que marcaram as trajetórias de vida das mulheres, produzindo assujeitamento; mas por outro, evidenciamos suas formas de luta. Para isso, utilizamos a noção de parresía foucaultiana e da amizade como exercício político enquanto formas de contraconduta e resistência às sujeições e como modos de reinvenção de si, contribuindo para o fortalecimento da luta.


The objective of this study was to reflect on the female coconut breakers from Piauí in their ways of life and fights with the Interstate Movement of Babassu Breakers (MIQCB). It was a cartographic study carried out in three rural communities in Esperantina, where the Piauí regional headquarters of the MIQCB is located. We used as resources the production of life narratives and photographs. Thus, on the one hand, we highlighted the power relations which marked the life trajectories of those women, producing lack of subjectivation; but on the other hand, we show their forms of fights. For this, we use a Foucauldian parresia notion and friendship in its political potential as ways of hostile conducts and resistance and ways of reinventing oneself, contributing to the strengthening of the fight.


Este estudio tiene como objetivo reflexionar sobre los modos de vida y de lucha de mujeres quebradoras de coco piauienses junto al Movimiento Interestatal de Quebradoras de Coco Babaçu (MIQCB). Se trató de un estudio cartográfico, realizado en tres comunidades de la zona rural de la ciudad de Esperantina, en Piauí, donde está ubicada la sede regional del MIQCB. Utilizamos como recursos la intervención fotográfica y la producción de narrativas de vida. Así, destacamos, por un lado, las relaciones de poder con los patrones que marcaron las trayectorias de vida de las mujeres, produciendo asombro; pero por otro, evidenciamos sus formas de lucha. Para ello, utilizamos la noción de parresía foucaultiana y de la amistad como ejercicio político como formas de contraconducta y resistencia a las sujeciones y como modos de reinvención de sí, contribuyendo al fortalecimiento de la lucha.

ABSTRACT Lippia origanoides is a honey shrub which has showed hypotensive potential assessed by in vivo studies. The aim of this work is the development of a pharmaceutical formulation composed by an optimized extract obtained from aerial parts of L. origanoides. The quantification of the naringenin marker in the dry extract and tablets developed was performed, as well as the assessment of the oral acute toxicity in rats. The hydroalcoholic extract of L. origanoides was spray-dried with the addition of colloidal silicon dioxide (Lo-HAE/CSD), and then applied in the preparation of eight different lots of tablets. The influence of the diluent (cellulose or babassu mesocarp), the presence of binder, and the percentage of lubricant, as well as organoleptic and physicochemical characteristics were screened. For the quantification of the marker content both in Lo-HAE/CSD and in the tablets, an analytical curve of the naringenin standard was fitted, and the samples were then analyzed in UFLC. The toxicological assessment was performed in female Wistar rats according to the Acute Toxic Class Method from OECD. The developed tablets produced meet acceptable macroscopic characteristics, and the presence of babassu as diluent provided improved physicochemical properties. The best content of Lo-HAE/CSD in the tablet (100.27%) was identified for the lot containing babassu, composed by 1.0% magnesium stearate, without PVP binder in its formulation. Moreover, Lo-HAE/CSD showed no signs of toxicity. Therefore, the babassu mesocarp powder is a promising pharmaceutical excipient for the development of herbal tablets containing the Lippia origanoides extract.

Resumo Objetivo: compreender a situação de trabalho das quebradeiras de coco babaçu à luz dos parâmetros da Análise Ergonômica do Trabalho (AET). Métodos: estudo observacional descritivo com mulheres quebradeiras de coco babaçu no município de Itapecuru-Mirim/MA, no período de setembro a novembro de 2014. Os dados foram coletados a partir de observações de campo, registros de imagens (fotos e vídeos), questionários e entrevistas com informantes-chave. Os instrumentos OWAS e RULA foram utilizados na AET. Resultados: riscos biomecânicos foram evidenciados na coleta, no transporte e na quebra dos cocos. Sintomas osteomusculares foram relatados por 93,5% das 275 participantes. Dores na coluna (58,4%), na região lombar (57%), no ombro direito (31,5%) e nos membros inferiores (30,1%) foram as mais referidas. As quebradeiras acreditam que tais sintomas estejam relacionados ao seu trabalho, mas a autonomia de poder decidir sobre a rotina de trabalho e a boa integração com seus pares foram identificados como elementos capazes de aliviar os efeitos da carga laboral, estimulando a satisfação pessoal e contribuindo para a continuidade dessa atividade secular. Conclusão: os resultados das avaliações das condições de saúde e trabalho, ratificados pelos relatos das informantes-chave, indicam a necessidade de mudança na atividade de quebra tradicional do coco babaçu.


Abstract Objective: to understand the work situation of babassu coconut openers through Ergonomic Work Analysis (EWA) parameters. Methods: descriptive observational study involving female babassu coconut openers in the city of Itapecuru-Mirim/MA, Brazil, from September to November 2014, using field observations, records of images (photos and videos), questionnaires and key informants interviews. OWAS and RULA instruments were used in the EWA. Results: biomechanical risks were evidenced in the coconuts collecting, transporting and opening. Musculoskeletal symptoms were reported by 93.5% of the 275 participants. Backache (58.4%), lower back pain (57%), right shoulder pain (31.5%) and lower limb pain (30.1%) were the mostly reported injuries. The openers believe that such symptoms are related to their work, but the autonomy to decide on their own work routine and the good integration with their peers were identified as elements that can mitigate the effects of work load, stimulate personal satisfaction and contribute to the continuity of this secular activity. Conclusion: the evaluations on health and work conditions, ratified by the key informants reports, indicate the need for change in the traditional babassu coconut opening.

Summary Background: the conventional method of fiber analysis using neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) was proposed by Peter Van Soest. The main advantage of this method is the precision of results; however, reagents are costly and laboratory work requires long runtime and labor. Objective: to compare analytical data from different methodologies used to assess NDF and ADF contents. Methods: means obtained with the conventional method were compared through Dunnett's test (α=5%) with values from alternative methods using autoclave as the digester system. A completely randomized design in a 4 x 2 factorial arrangement was used. Results: NDF content through alternative methods was assessed for Tifton 85 hay, babassu meal and sugarcane, whereas ADF was only determined for babassu meal. NDF and ADF did not differ (p(0.05) between non-sequential or sequential analysis for all the feedstuffs and methods studied, except for ADF in corn silage. Conclusion: alternative methodologies allow reducing operating costs and time but lack uniformity and accuracy for analyzing ADF in corn silage.


Resumen Antecedentes: la determinación de los valores de fibra detergente neutra (FDN) y fibra detergente ácida (FDA) es de gran importancia en la nutrición animal, siendo el método tradicional de análisis el propuesto por Van Soest. Este método presenta como ventaja principal la precisión de los resultados, sin embargo la rutina de laboratorio en su ejecución implica mucho tiempo debido a sus etapas manuales, además de ser un método de alto costo que genera considerables proporciones de residuos químicos. Objetivo: evaluar diferentes metodologías propuestas para la análisis de las FDN y FDA mediante la medición de los datos analíticos. Métodos: las medias obtenidas por el método tradicional fueron comparadas con las medias de métodos alternativos que usan una autoclave como sistema digestor por el test de Dunnette (α=5%). Un diseño completamente aleatorio, en un diseño factorial 4x2 fue adoptado. Resultados: los métodos alternativos fueron recomendadas para las determinaciones de FDN por el heno de Tifton 85, salvado de harina de babasú y caña de azúcar, mientras que las determinaciones de los valores de FDA apenas para el salvado de harina de babasú. Los resultados de los análisis de FDN y FDA no fueron significativamente diferentes (p(0.05) entre los análisis no secuencial y secuencial, en todos los alimentos y métodos estudiados, a excepción de la determinación de FDA en el ensilaje de maíz. Conclusión: las metodologías alternativas permitieron ganancias significativas con la reducción de costos operacionales y del tiempo de análisis, pero sin uniformidad en la precisión de los análisis involucrados.


Resumo Antecedentes: as determinações dos teores de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e em fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) são de extrema importância na nutrição animal, tendo como método convencional de análise o proposto por Van Soest. Esse método apresenta como principal vantagem a precisão dos resultados, no entanto, a rotina laboratorial da sua execução demanda muito tempo por possuir etapas manuais, além do que é um método de custo elevado e que gera resíduos químicos em proporções consideráveis. Objetivo: avaliar diferentes metodologias propostas para análise da FDN e FDA, através da verificação dos dados analíticos. Métodos: as médias obtidas pelo método convencional foram comparadas com as médias de métodos alternativos que utilizam a autoclave como sistema digestor, pelo teste de Dunnette (α=5%). O delineamento adotado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em um esquema fatorial 4x2. Resultados: os métodos alternativos foram recomendados para determinação de FDN no feno de Tifton 85, farelo de babaçu e cana-de-açúcar, enquanto para as determinações dos teores de FDA, apenas no farelo de babaçu. A precisão observada nas análises dos teores de FDN e FDA não diferiram significativamente (p(0.05) quanto a análise não sequencial e sequencial, em todos os alimentos e métodos estudados, com exceção da determinação de FDA na silagem de milho. Conclusão: as metodologias alternativas permitiram ganhos significativos com a redução dos custos operacionais e do tempo da análise, mas sem uniformidade na precisão das análises desenvolvidas.

The babassu mesocarp is easily found in supermarkets and other commercial establishments in Brazil. Despite its widespread use in both pharmaceutical and food industries, the literature has neither scientific studies about microbial contamination for these products nor about legal information expressed on label. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of microbiological contamination in babassu mesocarp sold in commercial establishments in Teresina-PI/Brazil besides the conformity of label information according to the rules of Brazilian Sanitary Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Ten samples of babassu mesocarp powder sold in the region were selected for study. Determination of heterotrophic microorganisms was carried out using the seeding technique of Plate Count Agar (CFU g-1). It was used Sabouraud Dextrose Agar medium for cultivation of fungi. For the analysis of label information, the resolutions (RDC), 259 of September 20, 2002, and 360 of December 23, 2003, beyond the law 10,674 of May 16, 2003 were used. The results of levels of contamination for heterotrophic bacteria and fungi showed high contamination for all samples. Most of the label samples were according to the rules. Therefore, the results suggest a more comprehensive monitoring of these microorganisms besides the development of more effective methods for decontamination of these products sold in Brazil.(AU)


O mesocarpo de babaçu é encontrado facilmente em supermercados e em outros estabelecimentos comercias e apesar de sua ampla utilização, tanto na indústria farmacêutica e de alimentos, na literatura não há trabalhos científicos que avaliem sua contaminação microbiológica ou informações legais necessárias para rótulos. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o nível de contaminação microbiológica do mesocarpo de babaçu, vendidos no comércio de Teresina-PI, bem como verificar a conformidade das informações dos rótulos com as normas da Agencia de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA). Foram selecionadas dez amostras do pó comercializadas no mercado regional. Para a determinação de microrganismos heterotróficos foi realizada a técnica de semeadura utilizando o meio Plate Count Agar, para fungos, utilizou-se o meio Sabouraud Dextrose Ágar e para a avaliação dos rótulos tomaram-se como base as resoluções, RDC 259, de 20/09/2002, RDC 360, de 23/12/2003, e a Lei nº10.674, de 16/05/2003. Os resultados dos índices de contaminação para bactérias heterotróficas e fungos mostraram-se bastante elevados. Quanto à rotulagem, a maioria das amostras estava de acordo com as regras. Com os resultados obtidos sugere-se um monitoramento mais abrangente desses microrganismos além do desenvolvimento de métodos de descontaminação mais efetivos para esses produtos comercializados no Brasil.(AU)

Objetivos: os efeitos da administração aguda oral do extrato aquoso do pó obtido do mesocarpo de Orbignya phalerata Mart foram investigados sobre parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos em camundongos Swiss machos. Métodos: os animais (n= 5-7/grupo) foram tratados por via oral com as doses de 1, 2 e 3 g/kg de peso corporal, observados durante 24 h e em seguida foi feita a coleta do sangue para avaliação dos parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos. Resultados: o tratamento com extrato aquoso do pó causou um pequeno número de mortes e baixa toxicidade nos animais. A administração do extrato aquoso do pó não alterou os parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos e o peso de órgãos. Para os parâmetros hematológicos, houve pequenas mudanças nas contagens de neutrófilos, linfócitos, eosinófilos e monócitos, mas estes não foram diferentes dos valores de referência. Conclusões: em conclusão, a administração aguda do extrato aquoso do pó não induziu nenhum efeito de risco na maioria dos parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos estudados em camundongos Swiss machos. No entanto, novos estudos com doses mais elevadas são necessários, para justificar ainda mais o uso seguro do mesocarpo do babaçu na alimentação humana.


Objetivos: los efectos de la administración oral aguda de polvo de extracto acuoso obtenido del mesocarpio de Orbignya phalerata Mart fueron investigados en los parámetros bioquímicos y hematológicos en ratones machos suizos. Métodos: los animales (n= 5-7/grupo) se trataron por vía oral con dosis de peso corporal 1, 2 y 3 g/kg, se observaron durante 24 h y luego se recogió sangre para la evaluación de los parámetros bioquímicos y hematología. Resultados: el tratamiento con polvo de extracto acuoso causó algunas muertes y baja toxicidad en animales. Su administración no alteró los parámetros bioquímicos y hematológicos ni el peso de los órganos. Para los parámetros hematológicos hubo pequeños cambios en el recuento de neutrófilos, linfocitos, eosinófilos y monocitos, pero estos no fueron diferentes de los valores de referencia. Conclusiones: la administración aguda de polvo de extracto acuoso no indujo ningún efecto de riesgo en la mayoría de los parámetros bioquímicos y hematológicos estudiados en ratones machos suizos. Sin embargo, los estudios con dosis mayores son necesarios para justificar aún más el uso seguro de mesocarpio de babasú en los alimentos.


Objectives: the effects of acute oral administration of aqueous extract powder obtained from the Orbignya phalerata Mart mesocarp were analyzed in terms of biochemical and hematological parameters in male Swiss mice. Methods: mice (n= 5-7/group) were orally treated with doses of 1, 2, and 3 g/kg body weight, they were observed for 24 h and then blood samples were collected for evaluation of biochemical and hematological parameters. Results: treatment with aqueous extract power caused the death of some animals and low toxicity. The administration did not alter either the biochemical and hematological parameters or the weight of organs. As to the hematological parameters, there were small changes in neutrophil, lymphocyte, eosinophil and monocyte counts, but these were not different from the reference values. Conclusions: the acute administration of aqueous extract powder did not induce any risky effect on most biochemical and hematological parameters studied in male Swiss mice. However, further studies with higher doses are needed to further support the safe use of babassu mesocarp in food.

The safety of babassu mesocarp (Orbignya phalerata Mart., Arecaceae), which exhibited anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic activities, was evaluated by determining the potential acute toxicity in mice. A lyophilized ethanol extract of babassu mesocarp (BME) was administered to C3H/HePas mice (10/group) in a single dose of 1000, 3000 and 5000 mg/kg, by gavage. General behavior adverse effects and mortality were determined for up to fourteen days. Selected biochemical parameters including glucose, triacylglyceride, cholesterol, urea, alkaline phosphatase and creatinine were determined by colorimetric assay. The heart, liver, spleen, kidneys and brain were weighted and evaluated macro and microscopically. The median lethal dose (LD50) of BME was greater than 5000 mg/kg. No behavior or body weight alterations were detected after the treatment. The acute treatment with BME has no effect on macroscopic and microscopic aspect of examined organs. Instead, BME increased the alkaline phosphatase and reduced the urea concentration in all groups. A significant increase on triacylglyceride was detected in the group BME1000. In conclusion, the acute treatment with high doses of BME can affect some biochemical parameters with a long lasting effect, although any change was detected at tissue level or body and organ weight.

Phlebotomine specimens were captured in domiciliary and forest environments in 47 municipalities between 1982 and 2005 with the aid of CDC light traps. A total of 91 species were found, of which four belonged to genus Brumptomyia and 87 to genus Lutzomyia, distributed among the following subgenera: Evandromyia (6), Lutzomyia (5), Micropygomyia (2), Nyssomyia (9), Pintomyia (2), Pressatia (3), Psathyromyia (6), Psychodopygus (14), Sciopemyia (4), Trichophoromyia (2), Viannamyia (2); species groups: Aragaoi (2), Baityi (1), Dreisbachi (1), Migonei (12), Oswaldoi (8), Pilosa (1), Saulensis (2), Verrucarum (4) and ungrouped (1). Species diversity was greatest in areas where there was dense evergreen seasonal forest (52 species), ombrophilous forest (31) and meridional cerrados (23) and lowest in areas with mixed forest (forest with babassu palms, cerrado and caatinga). The greatest similarity index was observed for restinga and open evergreen seasonal forest (J=0.48). Dense evergreen seasonal forest had greatest similarity with ombrophilous forest (J=0.38). The phlebotomine fauna was species rich and unevenly distributed in Maranhão, reflecting the phytogeographical complexity of the state, which is a result of the great variety of ecosystems and climate zones.


Espécimes de flebotomíneos foram capturados nos anos de 1982 a 2005, em ambientes domiciliares e florestais de 47 municípios, com uso de armadilhas luminosas CDC. Foram encontradas 91 espécies, sendo quatro pertencentes ao gênero Brumptomyia e 87 ao gênero Lutzomyia, distribuídas nos seguintes subgêneros: Evandromyia (6), Lutzomyia (5), Micropygomyia (2), Nyssomyia (9), Pintomyia (2), Pressatia (3), Psathyromyia (6), Psychodopygus (14), Sciopemyia (4), Trychophoromyia (2), Viannamyia (2); grupo de espécies: Aragaoi (2), Baityi (1), Dreisbachi (1), Migonei (12), Oswaldoi (8), Pilosa (1), Saulensis (2), Verrucarum (4) e não agrupada (1). A diversidade de espécies foi maior nas áreas de floresta estacional perenifólia densa (52 espécies), floresta ombrófila (31) e cerrados meridionais (23), sendo menor nas áreas de matas mistas (floresta com babaçu, cerrado e caatinga). O maior índice de similaridade foi observado entre a restinga e a floresta estacional perenifólia aberta (J = 0,48). A floresta estacional perenifólia densa apresentou maior similaridade com a floresta ombrófila (J = 0,38). A fauna de flebotomíneos mostrou-se rica e distribuída de maneira heterogênea no Maranhão, concordando com a complexidade fitogeográfica do Estado, que se manifesta na riqueza de ecossistemas e de zonas climáticas.
