Background & objectives: Attractive toxic sugar baits (ATSB) is a novel tool which employs mosquito sugar feeding behaviour to kill them. The potential of ATSB against mosquito vectors has been demonstrated in limited scope around the world including Israel, some of the African countries and USA. But their efficacy against mosquito vectors of India is yet to be ascertained. Therefore, current study was planned to evaluate the efficacy of TSB (without attractant) against two important malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and An. stephensi along with major dengue vector Aedes aegypti. Methods: TSB solution was prepared by dissolving different concentrations of boric acid in glucose and tested against each of the mosquito species. Another experiment was done by spraying this boric acid sugar solution on to Calendula officinalis plant. It served as a sole source of mosquito feed and mortality of mosquitoes was counted after 24 hours. Results: The TSB resulted in 100% mortality of Ae. aegypti and An. stephensi at 4% concentration of boric acid while in An. culicifacies 100% mortality was achieved at 3% concentration TSB solution. TSB solution with 2% boric acid, resulted in 99.1% mortality in An. culicifacies while ~95 % mortality of An. stephensi and Ae. aegypti. When TSB solution with 2% boric acid was sprayed on plant, ~89-94% mortality was observed in both An. stephensi and An. culicifacies. Interpretation & conclusion: Based on the results, boric acid based toxic sugar bait solution could be a promising tool for vector control. Further studies are needed to find out its toxicity of TSB against non-target organisms and residual efficacy in field trials in different ecotypes.

Aims@#Insect pests are one of the major constraints of oil palm production in Malaysia. However, synthetic chemical insecticides are the most common method for its control, despite their negative effects on non-target organisms and the development of resistance. Therefore, the present study is aimed to identify novel indigenous isolates of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) in oil palm soil as part of integrated pest management (IPM) of oil palm insect pests.@*Methodology and results@#The potential of EPF were isolated from the soil collected from the oil palm plantation in UPM using a mealworm beetle larva (Tenebrio molitor) as an insect bait. Seven Metarhizium anisopliae and two Purpureocillium lilacinum isolates were identified by morphological characterization (macroscopic and microscopic observation) and molecular identification using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region (ITS region amplification).@*Conclusion, significance and impact of study@#To our knowledge, this is the first time P. lilacinum has been found in the soil of an oil palm plantation or any other host in Malaysia. Furthermore, both of the isolates M. anisopliae and P. lilacinum may be potentially considered as biological control candidates for major insect pests in oil palm.

Background@#Nucleic acid sequencing is a multi-step process taken place in medical research or diagnostic laboratories. Since the emerge of second generation sequencing technology generally referred as next generation sequencing (NGS), the mass parallel reads covering human genome or transcriptome is achieved by cost cut down over thousand folds. Though the technology made tremendous push forward to various applications, its data analysis time and effort still takes worrisome time and human effort, bringing the emerge of next-step demand: targeted mass sequencing of only desired part from human genome or transcriptome with lower material cost and labor. By targeted sequencing, both run cost and data analysis process can be further cut down, and the read results are more reliable on changes such as determining varied number of repeats, heterozygote alleles, deletions, chromosomal scale abnormality and more. @*Objective@#In this study, we explored the utilization of biotinylated RNA baits on captured sequencing of cancer marker genes functional regions.@*Method@#Targeted NGS was achieved by capturing desired genomic regions using preparatory nucleic acid probes. RNA bait capturing of desired genomic regions has shown to have high specificity and quality. </br> The study was carried out with informed consent obtained from patients, with the approval №53 in 2018.03.15 by Medical Ethics committee, Ministry of Health, Mongolia.@*Result@#By preparing library of biotinylated RNA baits with 75000 unique sequences, we achieved mass parallel sequencing of human 410 cancer-marker-genes’ exons and UTRs with average read depth ~760, and covered thousands of SNPs on 5 genomic DNA samples. Tissue samples derived from breast cancer and ovary cancer had SNP and deletion on 7 marker genes (BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM, BRIP1, PTEN, TP53, RAD51C) not registered in database.@*Conclusion@#Experiments showed RNA baits with up to 117 nucleotide length, produced from ssDNA oligonucleotide stock, can be utilized to capture desired regions of human genome, and bring the cost of captured mass sequencing to 1500 USD, with 93.14-93.33% of Q30 read quality.

Abstract The distribution of most species occurs in delimited regions with unique characteristics called "centers of endemism". In Eastern Amazon is located the Belém Endemism Center (BEC), one of the most intensely deforested in Brazilian Amazon. Here, we show information about orchid bee assemblages based on historical records from entomological collections. For each species, we calculated occurrence frequency and dominance, and we classified them in 3 statuses: common, intermediate or rare species. Curves of observed and estimated richness were built, based on Jackknife estimator. We found 1,257 specimens from 56 species, constituting records from 1917 to 2009, and one species is a new record for BEC. Higher number of specimens and species was concentrated in a few locations and surveys increased from the 70's. The results suggest a high richness of orchid bees in the BEC, although this scenario is far from what is expected for the entire area. The high occurrence of rare species may be related to their low representativeness in the collections, and the proximity between the areas had favored samplings. Even so, the species list and the conservation status presented here may be useful information in studies comparing past and current orchid bee fauna, and, allied to data on bees' responses to land use changes occurred in BEC over the years, can fit as a basis for defining priority areas for conservation.


Resumo A distribuição da maioria das espécies ocorre em regiões delimitadas com características únicas conhecidas como "centros de endemismo". Na Amazônia Oriental está localizado o Centro de Endemismo Belém (CEB), uma das áreas mais intensivamente desmatadas na Amazônia Brasileira. Aqui, apresentamos informações sobre assembleias de abelhas orquídeas baseadas em registros históricos de coleções entomológicas. Para cada espécie, foram calculadas a frequência de ocorrência e a dominância, classificando-as em 3 estados: espécies comuns, intermediárias ou raras. Foram geradas curvas de riqueza observada e estimada, com base no estimador Jackknife. Encontramos 1.257 espécimes de 56 espécies, constituindo registros de 1917 a 2009, e uma espécie é um novo registro no CEB. Maior número de espécimes e espécies foi concentrado em poucos locais, com intensificação nas coletas a partir dos anos70. Os resultados sugerem alta riqueza de abelhas orquídeas no CEB, embora esse cenário esteja longe do que é esperado para toda a área. A elevada ocorrência de espécies raras pode estar relacionada à baixa representatividade nas coleções e a proximidade entre as áreas favoreceu as amostragens. Mesmo assim, a lista de espécies e o estado de conservação aqui apresentados podem ser informações úteis em estudos interessados em comparar a fauna passada e atual de abelhas das orquídeas e, aliado a dados sobre as respostas das abelhas às mudanças de uso da terra ocorridas no CEB ao longo dos anos, podem servir de base para definição de áreas prioritárias para conservação.

Abstract The effect of catch-and-release fishing on the survival of peacock bass (Cichla spp.) was evaluated by comparing two types of artificial bait (jig and shallow-diver plugs) and two types of post-catch confinement. Two experiments were conducted during the periods January-February and October-November 2012 in the Unini River, a right-bank tributary of the Negro River. In total, 191 peacock bass were captured. Both groups of fish were subjected to experimental confinement (collective and individual) for three days. Additionally, 11 fish were tagged with radio transmitters for telemetry monitoring. Mortality rate was estimated as the percentage of dead individuals for each type of bait and confinement. For peacock bass caught with jig baits, mortality was zero. The corresponding figure for shallow-diver bait was 1.66% for fish in collective containment, 18.18% for fish monitored by telemetry and 0% for individuals confined individually. Our results show low post-release mortality rates for peacock bass. Furthermore, neither the type of confinement nor the type of bait had a statistically significant influence on mortality rates. While future studies could include other factors in the analysis, our results show that catch-and-release fishing results in low mortality rates.


Resumo O efeito do pesque-solte na sobrevivência do tucunaré (Cichla spp.) foi avaliado comparando dois tipos de iscas artificiais, jig e de meia-água, e dois tipos de confinamento pós-captura. Dois experimentos foram conduzidos durante os períodos de janeiro-fevereiro e outubro-novembro de 2012, no Rio Unini, afluente da margem direita do Rio Negro. No total, 191 tucunarés foram capturados. Os peixes foram submetidos a um confinamento experimental (coletivo e individual) com duração de três dias. Além disso, 11 peixes foram marcados com radiotransmissores e liberados imediatamente após a captura, sendo monitorados por telemetria. A taxa de mortalidade foi calculada como a porcentagem de indivíduos mortos para cada tipo de isca e tratamento (confinamento individual, coletivo e sem confinamento). Não houve mortalidade para o grupo de tucunarés capturados com isca jig. A isca de meia-água mostrou uma taxa de mortalidade de 1,66% para o confinamento coletivo e 18,18% para os peixes monitorados por telemetria. Nossos resultados mostraram baixas taxas de mortalidade pós-soltura para tucunaré. Além disso, nem o tipo de confinamento, nem o tipo de isca tiveram influência significativa nas taxas de mortalidade. Ainda que estudos futuros possam incluir novos fatores na análise, os nossos resultados mostram que a prática do pesque-solte resulta em baixas taxas de mortalidade.

This paper presents information about the species richness and abundance of orchid bees in the transitional area between the Cerrado and the Amazon Forest in the Xingu river basin. The males were collected in a forest fragment in the municipality of Ribeirão Cascalheira, northeast Mato Grosso state, Brazil, between 1 and 5 November 2011. Benzyl benzoate, 1.8 cineole, eugenol and vanillin were used as baits, to attract the bees using insect nets and methyl salicylate was used only in the bottle traps. A total of 168 males belonged to four of five Euglossini genera distributed among 16 species were recorded. The greatest species richness was registered in the genus Euglossa, however Eulaema nigrita, was the most abundant Euglossine species in the community. The species richness varied between the edge and the first point within the fragment. The males were more active between 10:00 and 11:00 h, and the 1.8 cineole was the most attractive substance. The fragment studied contained representative species richness of orchid bees in a region of widespread environmental heterogeneity, which is still largely unknown as regards its pollinators and deserves attention for the compilation of new inventories.


En este trabajo se presenta información sobre la riqueza de especies y abundancia de Euglossini en la zona de transición entre el Cerrado y la selva amazónica, en la cuenca del río Xingu. Las muestras se recogieron en un fragmento de bosque en el municipio de Ribeirão Cascalheira, nordeste de Mato Grosso, Brasil, entre el 1 y 5 de noviembre de 2011. Las sustancias puras de benzoato de bencilo, 1,8 cineol, eugenol y la vainillina fueron utilizadas como cebos para atraer los machos usando red de insectos aunque el salicilato de metilo se utilizó en trampas pasivas. Un total de 168 machos pertenecientes a cuatro géneros fueron registrados, distribuidos en 16 especies. La mayor riqueza de especies se registró en el género Euglossa, aunque Eulaema nigrita fue la especie más abundante en la comunidad. La riqueza de especies varió entre el borde y el primer punto dentro del fragmento. Los machos de abejas de orquídeas eran más activos entre 10:00-11:00 h, y el 1,8 cineol fue la sustancia pura más atractiva. El fragmento estudiado contenía un alto grado de riqueza de especies de abejas de orquídeas en una región de heterogeneidad ambiental extensa, que sigue siendo en gran parte desconocido con relación a su fauna de insectos polinizadores y merece la atención para la elaboración de nuevos inventarios.

Nocturnal bees in the genus Megalopta Smith, 1853 are generally collected using artificial light sources. However, between 1993 and 2000, a total of 946 females (no males were captured) were captured using aromatic baits commonly used for orchid bees (Euglossini) in five localities in Bauru region, São Paulo, Brazil. Aromatic compounds used in bait traps were: benzyl acetate, eucalyptol, eugenol, skatole, methyl salicylate, and vanillin. The Megalopta species collected were: M. guimaraesi (71.2% of total number of specimens), M. amoena (28.1%), and M. aegis (0.6%). Using the data from these traps, we showed that there was a positive and significant correlation between the abundance of individuals and meteorological factors, rainfall and temperature. Bees were more commonly collected in the spring (September to December) and summer (December to March) than in the autumn and winter, the latter characterized for being a drier and colder period. Variations in the abundance were also detected among localities and years. The most attractive compounds were eugenol (54%), methyl salicylate (22%), and eucalyptol (16%). The ability to detect smells may have an important role in searching for flowers during dim-light conditions. We suggest the use of aromatic compounds in future studies on the biology of Megalopta in the Neotropical region.


Abelhas noturnas do gênero Megalopta (Smith, 1853) são geralmente coletadas usando fontes artificiais de luz. Porém entre os anos de 1993 e 2000, um total de 946 fêmeas de Megalopta foram capturadas (machos não foram capturados) usando iscas aromáticas frequentemente usadas para atração de machos de Euglossini, em cinco localidades na região de Bauru, São Paulo, Brasil. Os compostos aromáticos utilizados foram: acetato de benzila, eucaliptol, eugenol, escatol, salicilato de metila e vanilina. As espécies encontradas foram M. guimaraesi (71.2% do total de indivíduos), M. amoena (28.1%) and M. aegis (0.6%). De modo geral, os resultados mostraram correlação positiva e significativa entre a abundância de indivíduos e os fatores meteorológicos considerados - precipitação pluviométrica e temperatura. As abelhas foram geralmente capturadas em maior número na primavera e verão e raramente no outono e inverno, período mais seco e frio. Variações na abundância também foram detectadas entre as localidades e entre os anos estudados. As substâncias mais atrativas foram: eugenol (54%), salicilato de metila (22%) e eucaliptol (16%). A capacidade de detectar cheiros pode ter um importante papel na busca por flores em condições crepusculares. Sugerimos o uso destes compostos aromáticos em pesquisas futuras sobre a biologia de Megalopta na região Neotropical.

Euglossine bee communities in small forest fragments of the Atlantic Forest, Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil (Hymenoptera, Apidae). Euglossine bees are important pollinators in forests and agricultural areas. Although the structure of their communities is critically affected by anthropogenic disturbances, little is known about these bees in small forest fragments. The objectives of this study were to analyze the composition, abundance, and diversity of euglossine bee species in nine small fragments of different phytophysiognomies of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil, and to identify the environmental variables that may be related to the species composition of these communities. Males were sampled quarterly from May 2007 to May 2009 with aromatic traps containing methyl cinnamate, vanillin, eucalyptol, benzyl acetate, and methyl salicylate. A total of 1558 males, belonging to 10 species and three genera of Euglossina were collected. The richness ranged from five to seven species per fragment. Euglossa cordata, E. securigera, Eulaema nigrita e E. cingulata were common to all fragments studied. The diversity differed significantly among areas, ranging from H' = 1.04 to H' = 1.65. The precipitation, phytophysiognomy, and altitude had the highest relative importance over the species composition variation. The results presented in this study demonstrate that small forest fragments are able to support populations of euglossine bee species, most of which are widely distributed and reportedly tolerant to open and/or disturbed areas and suggest that the conservation of such areas is important, particularly in areas that are regenerating and in regions with agricultural matrices where these bees can act as important pollinators.


Comunidade de abelhas Euglossina em pequenos fragmentos de Mata Atlântica no estado do Rio de Janeiro, sudeste do Brasil (Hymenoptera, Apidae). Abelhas Euglossina são importantes polinizadores nas florestas e em áreas agrícolas. Embora a estrutura dessas comunidades seja criticamente afetada por perturbações antrópicas, pouco é conhecido a respeito destas abelhas em pequenos fragmentos florestais. Os objetivos deste estudo foram analisar a composição, abundância e diversidade de espécies em nove pequenos fragmentos florestais de diferentes fitofisionomias no sudeste do Brasil, e identificar as possíveis variáveis ambientais que podem estar relacionadas à composição de espécies de Euglossina. Os machos foram amostrados trimestralmente de maio/07 a maio/09 com o auxílio de armadilhas aromáticas contendo cinamato de metila, vanilina, eucaliptol, acetato de benzila e salicilato de metila. Foram amostrados 1558 machos de três gêneros e 10 espécies. A riqueza variou de cinco a sete espécies por fragmento. Euglossa cordata, E. securigera, Eulaema cingulata e E. nigrita foram comuns a todos os fragmentos estudados. A diversidade diferiu significativamente entre as áreas estudadas, variando de H' = 1.04 até H' = 1.65. A precipitação, o tipo fitofisionômico e a altitude tiveram alta importância relativa sobre a variação da composição de espécies. Os resultados apresentados neste estudo demonstram que pequenos fragmentos podem suportar populações de abelhas Euglossina que, em sua maioria, são amplamente distribuídas e supostamente tolerantes a ambientes abertos e perturbados e sugerem que a conservação dessas áreas pode ser de grande importância, principalmente em regiões em processo de regeneração e com matrizes agrícolas, onde essas abelhas podem atuar como polinizadores.

The Neotropical orchid bees have been the focus of several ecological studies in the last four decades, mainly due to the ease of attracting males of their species to synthetic baits that simulate floral fragrances. Moreover, orchid bees are mostly forest-dependent insects, occurring in biomes that have been rapidly wiped out and their conservation may be a matter of concern in the near future. Nevertheless, the prevalent usage of chemical attractants has hidden some problems barely discussed in the literature. Forty years after intensive studies on these bees, it is time to evaluate whether this methodology has been efficient enough to provide a clear idea of what does happen in nature. The main goal of this paper is to discuss the present status of our knowledge on orchid bees and critically evaluate the potential pitfalls of the currently used methodology, how to deal with them and the challenges for the next decades.


As abelhas-das-orquídeas têm sido o foco de diversos estudos ecológicos nas últimas quarto décadas, especialmente devido à facilidade de se atrair machos dessas abelhas à iscas sintéticas que simulam o odor de fragrâncias florais. Além disso, as abelhas-das-orquídeas são insetos dependents de áreas florestadas, ocorrendo em biomas que têm sido rapidamente desmatados e sua conservação pode ser um tema relevante no futuro próximo. Não obstante, a metodologia prevalente em inventários dessas abelhas esconde alguns problemas raramente discutidos na literatura. Quarenta anos após intensivos trabalhos com essas abelhas, é o momento de se avaliar se essa metodologia tem sido eficiente o suficiente para nos fornecer uma ideia precisa do que ocorre na natureza. O principal objetivo desse artigo é discutir o estágio atual de nosso conhecimento sobre as abelhas-das-orquídeas e avaliar os problemas potenciais da metodologia correntemente utilizada, como lidar com esses problemas e os desafios para as próximas décadas.

Studies were done to see the effects of five toxic baits based on metaldehyde and/or carbaryl on the taxonomic composition of soil meso and macrofauna, and determined the density of beneficial organisms in soybean under no tillage. Six treatments were tested and soil monoliths were taken before application and at 45 and 75 days after application (DAA). Before application, 1601 individuals were recorded, belonging 1086 to mesofauna and 515 to macrofauna. In soil mesofauna such as Annelida: Enchytraeidae (44%), Nematoda (33%) and Arthropoda (23%) were found. In the macrofauna Arthropoda 93% and Annelida: Oligochaeta, Megadrilli 7% were observed. No differences were observed among the treatments (p>0.05) in the total mesofauna density, at 45 and 75 DAA. The density of enchytraeids, mites, collembolans and symphylids showed no differences at 45 and 75 DAA (p>0.05). The total macrofauna density showed differences (p<0.05) at 45 and 75 DAA. The highest density was obtained with 4 kg ha-1 MataBibos Acay at 45 and 75 DAA. Earthworm and diplopod densities at 45 and 75 DAA showed no differences (p>0.05). The diversity of meso and macrofauna was not affected at 45 and 75 DAA. Bait application did not affect either the abundance or the diversity of soil beneficial invertebrates.

Background & objectives: In order to understand sandfly bionomics, vector species identification, and to develop methods for sandfly control, there is a need to sample sandflies in any particular habitat. This survey was aimed at determining the best method of sampling Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) duboscqi (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the field. Methods: Different animal baits and CO2-baited CDC light traps were used to attract sandflies released in an insect-proof screen-house located in the sandfly’s natural habitat in Marigat, Baringo district of Kenya. Results: Attraction of hungry P. duboscqi female sandflies by the goat (Capra hircis) was significantly higher than that of hamster (Mesocricetus auretus), Nile grass rat (Arvicanthis niloticus), gerbil (Tatera robusta) and chicken (Gallus domestica). However, two rodent species, A. niloticus and T. robusta did not differ significantly. A linear regression analysis of weights of animal baits and number of sandflies attracted revealed an insignificant result. The fluorescent dyes used to distinguish sandflies of different day experiments seemed not to influence the sandfly numbers in relation to the studied sandfly behaviour. Interpretation & conclusion: The similar attraction pattern of P. duboscqi in semi-field environment by CO2-baited CDC light trap and the goat provides hope for solution to the problem of fast dissipating dry ice (CO2 source) in the field. Goats can, therefore, also be utilized as deflectors of vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis from humans in zooprophylaxis in Leishmania major endemic areas where the sandfly is found.

Foi realizado um estudo sobre califorideos no Campus do Valonguinho, Universidade Federal Fluminense. A pesquisa foi efetuada de dezembro de 2003 a novembro de 2004, com coletas feitas com armadilhas utilizando iscas à base de peixe (sardinha), fígado bovino, camarão e banana. Foram coletados 6015 califorideos, Chrysomya megacephala e Lucilia eximia foram as mais freqüentes (50,55 por cento e 21, 52 por cento, respectivamente). A isca mais atrativa foi peixe (38,32 por cento) com picos populacionais em fevereiro e março.


It was carried out a survey of blowflies in a área of the Campus (Valonguinho) of the Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. The collections were performed with traps, using baits of fish (sardine), bovine liver, shrimps and banana. Were collected 6015 flies, Chrysomya megacephala and Lucilia eximia were the most frequent (50.55 percent and 21.52 percent, respectively). The flies were more abundant in February and March and the most attractive bait was fish (38.32 percent).

Espécies de parasitóides associados com moscas sinantrópicas foram coletadas com auxílio de iscas de fígado bovino no matadouro Alvorada em Itumbiara, Estado de Goiás, de março a dezembro de 2005. As pupas foram removidas da areia, após usar iscas de fígado como substrato para atrair as moscas. Elas foram individualizadas em cápsulas de gelatina até a emergência dos adultos de moscas ou de seus parasitóides. A prevalência total de parasitismo foi 15,3 por cento. A freqüência absoluta, porcentagem e espécies de parasitóides coletados foram: 205 exemplares (2,3 por cento) de Aphaereta sp., 173 (80,0 por cento) de Brachymeria podagrica, 578 (15,7 por cento) Nasonia vitripennis, um (0,5 por cento) de Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae, dois (0,9 por cento) de Spalangia sp. e um (0,5 por cento) de Trybliographa sp. A porcentagem de parasitismo apresentada pelos parasitóides de Aphaereta sp., B. podagrica, N. vitripennis, P. vindemmiae, Spalangia sp., e Trybliographa sp. foi de 0,4 por cento, 12,3 por cento, 2,4 por cento, 0,1 por cento, 0,1 por cento e 0,1 por cento, respectivamente. As espécies de dípteros parasitados foram: Chrysomya albiceps, C. megacephala, Musca domestica, Oxysarcodexia thornax, Peckia chrysostoma e Sarcodexia lambens.


Species of parasitoids associated with synanthropic flies were trapped by using shopped bovine liver as bites at slaughterhouse Itumbiara in the State of Goiás, from March to December 2005. Pupae were obtained by removing them from sand, after using liver baits as substract to atract flies. They were individually placed in gelatin capsules until the emergency of the adult flies or their parasitoids. The overall prevalence of parasitism was 15.3 percent. The frequency, percentage and species of parasitoids collected were: 205 specimens (2.3 percent) of Aphaereta sp., 173 (80.0 percent) of Brachymeria podagrica, 578 (15.7 percent) of Nasonia vitripennis, one (0.5 percent) of Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae and two (0.9 percent) of Spalangia sp. and one (0.5 percent) of Trybliographa sp., respectively. The parasitoids Aphaereta sp., B. podagrica, N. vitripennis, P. vindemmiae, Spalangia sp. and Trybliographa sp. had a parasitism percentage of 0.4, 12.3, 2.4, 0.1, 0.1 and 0.1, respectively. The parasitizing diptera were: Chrysomya albiceps, C . megacephala, Musca domestica, Oxysarcodexia thornax, Peckia chrysostoma and Sarcodexia lambens.

A study was conducted in an early second-growth forest aiming at knowing the richness, relative abundance, seasonal distribution, and hourly frequency of euglossine bees, and their association with scent baits. Male bees were attracted to cineole, vanillin, methyl salicylate, and eugenol. The baits were hooked 1.5 m high and 6 m from one another. The specimens were collected from December 1997 to November 1998, once a month, from 7:00 to 17:00 h. A total of 339 male euglossine bees were caughts, accounting for 19 species and four genera. The most common species was E. cordata, making up 69.9% of the individuals, followed by E. truncata (2.3%), E. violaceifrons, and E. smaragdina (2.1%). The most attractive scent was cineole, which baited 87% of the specimens and 73.7% of the species. Vanillin, the second most visited bait, eured 7.6% of the specimens and 26.3% of the species. E. surinamensis was only collected with this bait. Methyl salicylate and eugenol baited combined 2.6% of the specimens. However, by species numbers Methyl salicylate attracted 21% whereas eugenol was attractive for 15.8% of them. In general, the species were more abundantly found in the rainy season (January-June). The hourly activity data showed that the euglossine bees were attracted to the baits all day long, but at a higher frequency in the morning period, peaking between 8:00 and 10:00 h.


Realizou-se o presente estudo em uma área de capoeira, objetivando conhecer a riqueza, a abundância relativa, a distribuição sazonal, a freqüência horária e a associação de espécies de Euglossinae com as iscas odoríferas. As abelhas (machos) foram atraídas por iscas de cineol, vanilina, salicilato de metila e eugenol, as quais encontravam-se a 1,5 m do solo e a uma distância de 6 m uma das outras. As coletas foram realizadas de dezembro/97 a novembro/98, uma vez por mês, das 7 às 17 horas. Foram amostrados 339 machos, distribuídos em 19 espécies e 4 gêneros. A espécie mais abundante foi E. cordata, representada por 69,9% dos indivíduos, seguida por E. truncata (2,9%), E. violaceifrons e E. smaragdina (2,1%). O composto mais atrativo foi o cineol, que atraiu 87% dos indivíduos e 73,7% das espécies. Vanilina atraiu 7,6% dos indivíduos e 26,3% das espécies, sendo a segunda isca mais visitada. E. surinamensis foi capturada somente nessa essência. Salicilato de metila e eugenol atraíram juntos 2,6% dos indivíduos. Salicilato de metila atraiu 21% das espécies, eugenol ,15,8%. Em geral, as espécies apresentaram maior freqüência nos meses chuvosos (janeiro-junho). Os machos freqüentaram as essências durante todo o dia, porém com maior freqüência no período matutino, cujo pico observado foi entre 8 e 10 horas.

From September, 92 to August, 93 bee sampling was done in a secondary forest near the Pepital River, in Alcântara, MA, in order to study the local Euglossini fauna. Five aromatic compounds were used: eucaliptol, eugenol, methyl salicylate, vanillin, and benzoate. Four hundred sixty-seven male Euglossini bees were captured, distributed in 4 genus and 19 species. Euglossa was the most abundant and with high diversity (302 specimens and 14 species), followed by Eulaema (121; 3), Eufriesea (41; 1), and Exaerete (3; 1). The species which more frequently visited the bait were Euglossa piliventris (141 specimens; 30.19%), Euglossa cingulata (113; 24.21%), Euglossa ignita (45; 9.64%), Eufriesea pulchra (41; 8.78%), and Euglossa gaianii (33; 7.07%) corresponding to 79.88% of the sampling universe. The bees were active throught the year, however during the rainy season more activity and diversity were observed. The most attractive essence was eucaliptol (44.32% specimens and 84.21% species). In spite of this study having been done in a forest fragment, a secondary vegetation area smaller than other areas studied in Maranhão, it showed a significant diversity rate. This result reinforces the importance of fragments in the conservation of local bee communities.


De setembro/92 a agosto/93, foram feitas coletas em uma área de vegetação secundária, próxima ao rio Pepital, Alcântara, MA, com o objetivo de conhecer a fauna de Euglossini local. Foram coletados 467 machos, 4 gêneros e 19 espécies. Euglossa foi o gênero mais abundante e com maior número de espécies (302 indivíduos, 14 espécies), seguido de Eulaema (121; 3), Eufriesea (41; 1) e Exaerete (3; 1). As espécies que mais se destacaram em visita às iscas-odores foram: Euglossa piliventris (141 ind.; 30,19% do total de abelhas coletadas), Eulaema cingulata (113; 24,21%), Euglossa ignita (45; 9,64%), Eufriesea pulchra (41; 8,78%) e Euglossa gaianii (33; 7,07%) representando 79,88% do universo amostral. Foram ativas durante todo o ano, entretanto, foram observadas maior atividade e maior diversidade de abelhas em visita às essências no período chuvoso. A essência que atraiu o maior número de espécies e indivíduos foi o Eucaliptol (84,21% e 44,32%, respectivamente). O sítio de estudos, embora apresentasse vegetação secundária, cuja área amostrada foi menor do que outras áreas já estudadas no Maranhão, revelou uma significativa diversidade de Euglossini. Tal resultado reforça a importância dos fragmentos na manutenção das comunidades de abelhas na região.

The bee fauna of a restrict area of Lowland Region of Maranhão was studied. Monthly samples were performed with entomological net and baits trap with attractive compounds, totalling 288 hours of sampling. A total of 839 individuals belonging to 38 species of the bee families Apidae, Megachilidae, Halictidae, Andrenidae and Colletidae were collected on flowers and 72 individuals (11 species) of Euglossinae in baits trap. Scaptotrigona flavisetis Moure, Trigona pallens Cockerell and Apis mellifera Linnaeus were most frequent species in the area. Bee frequencies showed various patterns of seasonality, i.e. the period in which most bees of S. flavisetis were observed were January and October, T. pallens in January and February and A. mellifera in April. Euglossa (E.) cordata and E. (E.) gr. modestior were the most frequent species collected in baits traps and Eucaliptol was the most attractive compound.


Estudou-se durante um ano a fauna de abelhas de uma região da Baixada maranhense em Vitória do Mearim MA. Foram feitas coletas mensais com auxílio de redes entomológicas e armadilhas de cheiro, no período de um ano, totalizando 288 horas de amostragem. Um total de 839 indivíduos de 38 espécies de abelhas pertencentes às famílias Apidae, Megachilidae, Halictidae, Andrenidae e Colletidae foram coletadas nas flores e 72 indivíduos (11 espécies) de Euglossinae em armadilhas com iscas-odoríferas. Scaptotrigona flavisetis oure, Trigona pallens Cockerell e Apis mellifera Linnaeus foram as espécies mais abundantes na área. A sazonalidade foi variável de acordo com as diferentes espécies de abelhas. S. flavisetis foi observada em maior número em janeiro e outubro, T. pallens em janeiro e fevereiro e A. mellifera em abril. Das abelhas coletadas em armadilhas, Euglossa (E.) cordata e . (E.) gr. modestior foram as mais abundantes e Eucaliptol foi a isca odorífera que recebeu maior número de visitas.

This research was developed in an Eucalyptus plantation of Jari Celulose S.A., in Almerin, Pará State, Brazil from September 1996 to January 1997. The objectives were to test the efficiency of two ant baits with sulfluramid and another one with chlorpirifos (at 4, 6, 8 and 10 grams per square meter of ant nest) against Acromyrmex laticeps nigrosetosus Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Both baits with sulfluramid, in all dosages tested, showed more than 99.0% of transport with no devolution. All ant colonies treated with these baits were dead during the final evaluation while mortality of nests of this ant treated with chlorpirifos ranged from 55.56 to 66.67% for the different dosages tested. The sulfluramid baits can be recomended to control A. laticeps nigroselosus in the humid tropic of Brazil.


Este trabalho foi realizado em reflorestamento de eucalipto da Jari Celulose S.A., no município de Almerim, Pará, de setembro de 1996 a janeiro de 1997. Objetivou-se testar a eficiência de duas iscas granuladas à base de sulfluramida e outra à base de clorpirifós, nas dosagens de 4, 6, 8 e 10 gramas por metro quadrado de formigueiro, para o controle de Acromyrmex laticeps nigroselosus Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). As duas iscas com sulfluramida, nas dosagens testadas, apresentaram acima de 99,0% de transporte e nenhuma devolução. Todos os formigueiros tratados, com essas iscas, estavam mortos na avaliação final, enquanto a eficiência da isca com clorpirifós variou de 55,56 a 66,67%, para as diferentes dosagens testadas. As iscas à base de sulfluramida podem ser recomendadas para o controle de A. laticeps nigrosetosus na região do trópico úmido do Brasil.

Male euglossine bees were collected in the savannas (Cerrado) of Barreirinhas, in the western coastal lowland zone of Maranhão State. Animals were baited with cineole, eugenol, methyl salicylate and benzyl benzoate. Nine species belonging to 4 genera were found. Euglossa cordata was the most abundant (63,31%), followed by Eulaema cingulata (17,80%), Eulaema nigrita (7,63%), Euglossa modestior (4,94%) and Eufriesea ornata (4,16%). The others Euglossa chalybeata, Euglossa fimbriata, Euglossa melanotricha and Exaerete smaragdina, were less frequently found, representing only 2,16% of the total sample (combined). The bees were active in both the rains and dry seasons, especially on the first. Cineole was the most attractive aromatic compound (78,2% of specimens and 8 species), followed by eugenol (19,9% and 5 species), benzyl benzoate (0,6% and 2 species) and methyl salicylate (1,3% and 1 species).


Machos de Euglossinac foram coletados nos cerrados da região de Barreirinhas, Zona do Litoral da Baixada Oriental Maranhense, com uso de cineol, eugenol, salicilato de metila e benzoato de benzila, como iscas. Foram encontradas 9 espécies distribuídas em 4 gêneros: Euglossa, Eufriesea, Eulaema e Exaerete. As mais comuns foram Euglossa cordata (63,31%), Eulaema ungulata (17,80%), Eulaema nigrita (7,63%), Euglossa modestior (4,94%) e Eufriesea ornata (4,16%). As demais, Euglossa chalybeata, Euglossa fimbriata, Euglossa melanotricha e Exaerete smaragdina, foram menos freqüentes, representando juntas 2,16% da amostra total. As abelhas estiveram ativas nas duas estações, seca e chuvosa, sendo mais abundantes na última. Cineol atraiu 78,2% dos machos (8 espécies), eugenol, 19,9% (5 espécies), salicilato de metila 1,3% (1 espécie) e benzoato de benzila 0,6% (2 espécies).
