ABSTRACT The BANA test determines the proteolytic activity of the main periodontal red complex bacteria, the ease and clinical versatility of the test has made it a viable option for assessing periodontal treatment. The objective of this research is the identification of anaerobic microorganisms reactive to the BANA test before and after non-surgical periodontal therapy in diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: For this study we worked with patients attending the Diabetic Club of the Health Center No. 4 of Chimbacalle belonging to the Ministry of Public Health of the Metropolitan District of Quito. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling of a total of 30 diabetic patients between 35 and 75 years of age of both sexes was carried out, who underwent BANA microbiological analysis before and after non-sur-gical periodontal therapy. A prospective study was performed before non-surgical periodontal therapy, and one month after in diabetic patients with chronic periodontitis in sites with probing depths and insertion level ≥ 5mm. Results: the results of the study showed no significant differences between study patients be-fore and after non-surgical periodontal therapy for the microbiological BANA test. Conclusions: Non-surgical periodontal therapy is an effective treatment in the elimination of periodontal disease as long as there is patient cooperation. The results of the microbiological test in this study showed no significant differences.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To document the medicinal and other folk uses of native plants of the Bana Valley of district of Kotli-Azad Jammu Kashmir with a view to preserve the ethnobotanical knowledge of this area and to develop an ethnobotanical inventory of the species diversity. METHODS: The fieldwork was conducted during a period of one year. Data were collected through semi-structured questionnaire and interview of the informants including indigenous people, tribal people, and traditional health practitioners residing in the study area. RESULTS: The present study documented etnobotanical uses of 86 plant species belonging to 81 genera and 47 families. This study revealed that most of the species were used medicinally (74 spp; 42.29%). Leaves found to be the most frequently used part (56 spp., 36.13%) for preparation of indigenous recipes and fodder purpose. CONCLUSIONS: The current research provides a huge lump of ethnobotanical knowledge and depicts strong human-plant interaction. It is an urgent need to document indigenous uses of plants for future domestication.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a flavor-containing dentifrice on the formation of volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) in morning bad breath. A two-step, blinded, crossover, randomized study was carried out in 50 dental students with a healthy periodontium divided into two experimental groups: flavor-containing dentifrice (test) and non-flavor-containing dentifrice (control). The volunteers received the designated dentifrice and a new toothbrush for a 3 X/day brushing regimen for 2 periods of 30 days. A seven-day washout interval was used between the periods. The assessed parameters were: plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), organoleptic breath scores (ORG), VSC levels (as measured by a portable sulphide monitor) before (H1) and after (H2) cleaning of the tongue, tongue coating (TC) wet weight and BANA test from TC samples. The intra-group analysis showed a decrease in ORG, from 3 to 2, after 30 days for the test group (p < 0.05). The inter-group analysis showed lower values in ORG, H1 and H2 for the test group (p < 0.05). There was no difference between the amount of TC between groups and the presence of flavor also did not interfere in the BANA results between groups (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that a flavor-containing dentifrice seems to prevent VSCs formation in morning bad breath regardless of the amount of TC in periodontally healthy subjects.

Recent researchs suggest that periodontophatogens microrganisms are transmitted among the members of the same family, because it could be observed the likeness of the lineages of obtained from bacterias of family members, mainly of the mother. The purpose of this study was to verify if there was some significant correlation between the results of the Test BANA (Perioscan), obtained in samples of subgingival dental plaque of 54 children between 6 and 9 years and their mothers, resident in the municipal district BarretosS.P. The samples of the subgingival plaques were picked up with periodontal instruments in 432 sites. After the statistical analysis of the data, the BANA Test results showed that in the children 67 (31%) of the sites presented positive reactivity while in the mothers 85 (39,3%) and in relation to the negativity of the BANA test, it was 149 (69%) e 131 (60,7%) respectivilly, this showed a statistically significant relationship between mother's and son BANA variable. The results of the present study let us to suggest that the presence of bacterial periodontophatogens in the children is related with the presence of the same bacterias in their mothers, and that a possible relationship of the periodontal alterations in the mothers can be an important factor in the establishement of periodontal pathologies in children
