RESUMEN

The foveal avascular zone(FAZ)is the most sensitive region of the retina, which is interconnected by the macular capillary plexus. Its morphology can indirectly reflect the alterations of macular microcirculation. With strong repeatability and reliability, optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)can non-invasively visualize and quantify the FAZ. The great value of OCTA makes it an important supplemental examination tool in ophthalmology and other professions. The area and perimeter of FAZ have been demonstrated to be an effective clinical diagnostic indicator in high myopia, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and other ocular diseases. In recent years, the geometry of FAZ has also proven to have clinical value. The parameters describing the geometry of FAZ, such as circularity index, acircularity index and axial ratio, provide a new perspective for ocular disease research. The comprehensive investigation of the morphological characteristics of the FAZ is helpful to explore the pathological mechanism of the occurrence and development of ocular diseases, predict preclinical changes, make pathological stages of the disease precise, and provide a theoretical basis for monitoring the disease's progression and assessing patients' visual prognosis.

RESUMEN

Beans are the main source of protein of plant origin in the Brazilian diet, they also contain phenolic compounds, antioxidants, iron, fibers and vitamins. The BRSMG Majestoso cultivar belongs to the commercial group of carioca beans, displays high productivity, excellent health and a 90-day cycle, has high yield and is resistant to disease. The study of physical properties enables the prediction of agricultural products behavior relative to responses of physical and chemical treatments, in order to allow the maintenance of quality and safety of processed foods. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of drying on the physical characteristics of beans of the BRSMG Majestoso cultivar. Beans with an initial moisture content of approximately 0.2660 d.b. (dry basis) were used, and dried at 40ºC. The following physical characteristics were determined: bulk density, unit density, intergranular porosity, 1000-grain weight, sphericity, circularity, geometric diameter, unit volume, projected area, surface area and the surface to volume ratio. Based on the results, a reduction in the moisture content of the beans promotes an increase in bulk density, unit density, porosity, sphericity, circularity and the surface to volume ratio. Conversely, the 1000-grain weight, geometric diameter, unit volume, projected area and surface area decreased as the moisture content of the beans was reduced.

PURPOSE: To compare parameters of femtosecond laser and manual continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: Femtosecond laser cataract surgery was performed in 30 eyes of 30 patients, and conventional cataract surgery with a manual CCC in 30 eyes of 30 patients. One month after surgery, CCC diameters, circularity of capsulotomy, and distance between the CCC and pupil center were analyzed using the AS-OCT. RESULTS: Mean maximal CCC diameter was 4.96 +/- 0.23 mm in the femtosecond laser group, and 4.70 +/- 0.82 mm in the manual CCC group. Mean minimal CCC diameter was 4.91 +/- 0.23 mm in the femtosecond group, and 4.48 +/- 0.64 mm in the manual CCC group showing significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.000). Circularity of capsulotomy was 0.99 +/- 0.01 in the femtosecond group and 0.91 +/- 0.13 in the manual CCC group and was statistically different between the 2 groups (p = 0.000). The distance from the CCC center to the pupil center was 0.18 +/- 0.09 mm in the femtosecond group and 0.26 +/- 0.17 mm in the manual CCC group. The CCC center was closer to the pupil center in the femtosecond than in the manual CCC group (p = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS: Properly sized and shaped capsulotomy can be expected in femtosecond laser CCC compared with manual CCC.

RESUMEN

Aims and Objectives: Mild and/or moderate ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) may resolve after isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). It has been shown that the loss of saddle shape of the mitral valve is associated with IMR and is determined by an increase in the nonplanarity angle (NPA). The aim of this prospective, observational study was to test the hypothesis that NPA might decrease immediately after CABG alone in patients with mild to moderate IMR. Materials and Methods: This prospective, observational study was conducted in an academic, tertiary care hospital. Twenty patients underwent 2D and 3D transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and mitral valve assessment before and immediately after the CABG. NPA, circularity index, and other geometric variables were obtained. They were compared using paired t test. The SPSS (Version 15.0, Chicago, IL, USA) was used for statistical analysis. P <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The NPA was similar in the pre- and post-bypass periods (148° ± 15°, 148° ± 19°, P = 0.88). Circularity index (0.93 ± 0.13, 0.97 ± 0.11, P = 0.41) also was similar. Conclusions: There was no change in the mitral valve NPA with revascularization alone in patients with mild or moderate IMR. Mitral valve does not change its planarity (NPA) with revascularization alone in patients with IMR.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the size, circularity and repeatability between the conventional manual technique and the open-ring guided continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis (CCC) technique in cataract surgery. METHODS: The present study comprised 120 eyes divided into two equal groups. In the first group (group A), CCC was performed using a 5.3-mm open ring-shaped caliper and in the second group (group B), CCC was performed using the conventional manual technique. Photographs were taken after each surgical step (CCC, phacoemulsification, Intraocular lens insertion and corneal stromal hydration). The diameter, area and circularity of the anterior capsule were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The anterior capsule diameter was 5.32 +/- 0.26 mm for group A (coefficient of variation 0.049) and 5.14 +/- 0.64 mm for group B (coefficient of variation 0.125); the area was 22.9 +/- 0.71 mm2 for group A (coefficient of variation 0.031) and 21.40 +/- 1.37 mm2 for group B (coefficient of variation 0.064). Circularity was 0.93 +/- 0.24 for group A (coefficient of variation 0.258) and 0.86 +/- 0.78 for group B (coefficient of variation 0.907). CONCLUSIONS: The open ring-guided CCC technique resulted in an increase of diameter and capsulorrhexis area. This method showed superior circularity and repeatability compared to conventional manual technique and can be useful in cataract surgery.

RESUMEN

This study presents a methodological approach based on radar images and on gray level, size and geometric pattern to identify potential unofficial airplane strips in Amazonia. The following procedures were conducted: georeferencing of a L-band, HH polarization, 3-meter spatial resolution image obtained by the SAR-R99B system over the Itaituba municipality, State of Para; subtraction of speckle noise with a median filter; image classification with the ISODATA unsupervised technique; conversion of selected targets of interest into vector format; and calculation and automatic selection of targets of interest by the circularity and tortuosity indices. Among the 10 previously identified targets, two were considered as potential unofficial airplane strips by the above mentioned indices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a radiometric analysis of radicular cysts and periapical granulomas is useful in the differential diagnosis. In this experiment, twenty-nine periapical radiographs of the radicular cyst and those periapical granuloma were used. The periapical radiography was taken by intraoral paralleling device. The X-ray film was digitized and digitally filtered to reduce film-grain noise. We estimated density difference of the inner/outer area, roundness or circularity, bone profile or scan line of the margin and cumulative percentage frequency curve of radicular cyst & periapical granuloma. The obtained results were as follows ; 1. The differences in density between ROIs of inner and outer area of radicular cysts were smaller than those of periapical granulomas. 2. The equivalent circular diameter was over 6.3mm, there was significant difference between periapical cyst and periapical granuloma. 3. In differential diagnosis of radicular cyst and periapical granuloma using bone profile, sensitivity, spicificity and accuracy were considerably high(0.83, 0.86, 0.86) respectively. 4. Cumulative percentage frequency curve of the radicular cyst was closer to the pseudo-pixel value of 50 than average curve, whereas periapical granuloma was closer to that of 0. Hence we conclude that digital radiometric features might be useful in the differential diagnosis between radicular cyst and periapical granuloma.
