RESUMEN

Pinhão is highly perishable due to its high water activity, being easily affected by fungi during storage and also susceptible to infestation by larvae. This seed is usually marketed in the pinhão cones itself, or bulk threshed, and packed in plastic bags, chilled or ground frozen. Pinhão conservation and industrialization techniques should be developed to promote its commercialization and consumption at other times of the year, besides the seasonal period, encouraging its sustainable production, extraction and commercialization, considering its essentially extractive character. The objective of this study was to evaluate the conservation of pinhão by the use of gamma radiation and refrigeration. The pinhões were irradiated with a cobalt60 source at a dose rate of 1 kGy. A non-irradiated sample was used as a control. The pinhões were packed in high-density polyethylene bags and stored at ambient temperature and refrigerated at 4 ºC, during 90 days. Pinhões were evaluated for weight loss, acidity, reducing sugars, vitamin C, firmness, color, total phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity and microbiological analyzes. The isolated use of gamma radiation was not effective for the maintenance of the evaluated parameters. However, when used in conjunction with refrigerated storage, it reduced the growth of aerobic fungi, as well as mesophilic and psychrotrophic microorganisms. The isolated use of refrigeration showed a reduction in weight loss, reducing sugars and an increase in vitamin C content and antioxidant activity. Thus, to increase the benefits, we suggest evaluating higher doses of radiation as a function of the thick pinhão shell.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The study purpose included dosimetric comparison of cobalt 60 (60Co) and iridium 192 (192Ir) high dose rate (HDR) source used in brachytherapy treatment of cervical cancer. Materials and Methods: Computed tomography (CT) scans for 15 patients of carcinoma of uterine cervix using 3-mm slice thickness were considered for the study The contouring of high-risk clinical target volume (HRCTV), bladder, and rectum on CT images was done as per the GEC ESTRO guidelines with the help of magnetic resonance imaging images in the treatment planning system. All parameters were kept the same for 60Co (3.5 mm active length, 0.5 mm active dia, Bebig) and 192Ir (3.5 mm active length, 0.6 mm active dia, Bebig) HDR source with 2.5-mm step size and dose prescription to Point A. As per the International Commission on Radiation Unit (ICRU)-89 guidelines, the dose–volume parameters such as D50(Gy), D90(Gy), and D98(Gy) for HRCTV and D0.1cc (Gy), D1cc (Gy), D2cc (Gy), and D5cc (Gy) to the bladder and rectum were calculated for both the HDR sources. Results: The difference in dose–volume histogram parameters such as D50,D90,and D98 of HRCTV was 3.19%, 1.13%, and 0.50%, respectively, for the two radioisotopes. The difference in dose values of D0.1cc, D1cc, D2cc, D5cc, and ICRU reference points of bladder was –0.58%, –0.67%, –0.99%, –0.94%, and –1.75%, respectively. On the other hand, dose difference for D0.1cc, D1cc, D2cc, D5cc, and ICRU reference points of rectum was 0.67%, 0.26%, 0.56%, 0.63%, and –0.33%, respectively. Conclusions: The present study results show that all the dose parameters of HRCTV, bladder, and rectum with 60Co were comparable with those of 192Ir HDR source. The isodose distribution is more bulge out for 60Co in cranial-caudal direction compared to that of 192Ir. However, these differences can be reduced by treatment planning optimization techniques. The clinical plan evaluation in each slice and plane is necessary to explore the logistic and financial benefits of miniaturized 60Co source over 192Ir HDR source

RESUMEN

Background: The relationship between iron, hypoxia, inflammation, and erythropoietin in cellular homeostasis is well documented. Patients on radiotherapy are known with active immune/inflammatory disorders often accompanied with reduced iron uptake or unavailability of circulatory iron and hence, must be adequately evaluated. The present study hypothesized “aqueous extracts of Camellia sinensis, Telfairia occidentalis and Parquetina nigrescens have chemical properties of ameliorating and restoring to normal, functional iron deficiency sequel to Cobalt 60 irradiation effect”. Materials and Methods: Fifty-Five young male guinea-pigs approximately 450 gram in weight were recruited and thirty were randomly assigned to 3 groups (A, B and C) for the study. Groups A and B were further divided into 4 (A1-4 and B1-4) with 3 animals (n=3) per group. Three guinea-pigs were also assigned to group C. Groups A and B belonged to Pre and post-irradiation groups while groups C served as control. Each animal was given 400r (4.0 Gy) whole-body gamma-irradiation under general anaesthesia, using a Co60 therapy unit as a source. Groups A1, A2, A3 and A4 had 1,400 mg/kg C. sinensis, 4000 mg/kg P. nigrescens, 3,500 mg/kg T. occidentalis and Combined dose (1,400 mg/kg C. sinensis + 400 mg/kg P. nigrescens + 3,500 mg/kg T. occidentalis) respectively twice daily 72 hours prior to irradiation and continued throughout the 14 days of the study. Groups B1, B2, B3 and B4 had similar treatment but commenced 24 hours after exposure to radiation and likewise continued throughout the 14 days of the study. Group C were not given any treatment but also had irradiation. Results: Total Iron Binding Capacity, Ferritin, Serum Transferrin receptor and Iron were all increased significantly for all the extracts pre and post irradiation. However, C-reactive protein decreased significantly. Conclusion: Aqueous extracts of Camellia sinensis, Parquetina nigrescens and Telfairia occidentalis leaves have good ameliorating effect on irradiation-induced injuries.

RESUMEN

Summary We demonstrated in previous investigations that the internal structure of paintings can be visualized with conventional radiography in transmission mode when paintings have the proper stratigraphy. Unfortunately, there are many paintings that do not result in useful images. This problem can be solved by using radiography in emission mode. With this technique, the painting is irradiated with high energetic X-rays originating from an X-ray tube operating at 100 keV - 320 keV while inside the painting low energetic signals such as photoelectrons or characteristic photons are being generated. These signals escape from the top 10 µm of the painting and are able to illuminate the imaging plate. However, this technique has also some disadvantages. One of them is that it is not able to visualize underlying paintings. In this study, we explored the possibility to enhance the information depth by increasing the energy of the photon source from 100 keV up to 1.3325 MeV (i.e., 60Co source). At the same time, we also studied how the contrast between pigments is generated in emission mode. For this, we used mathematical simulation of particle transport in matter to understand the relation between input particle (particle type such as photon, electron or positron and the energy of the particle), the material being irradiated (element from which it is composed, thickness and density) and the output signal (generated particle types and energy). Finally, we will show that it is possible to image paintings using a 192Ir and even a 60Co source.

OBJECTIVE: To determine and compare treatment outcomes between cobalt-60 (Co-60) and iridium-192 (Ir-192) high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy in stage IB2–IIIB cervical cancer patients at Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, Navamindrahiraj University. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with cervical cancer and treated with radiotherapy at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital between 2004 and 2014. Survival rate was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier method and were compared between groups with log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed using Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: A total of 480 patients with cervical cancer and treated with radiotherapy were included, 274 patients for Ir-192 group and 206 patients for Co-60 group. The 2- and 5-year disease-free survival rate in Ir-192 group were 80.4% and 73.1% and in Co-60 group were 82.5% and 74.7%, respectively (p = 0.365). Overall survival rates at 2 and 5 years were 89.4% and 77% of the Ir-192 group, and 91.6% and 81.9% in the Co-60 group, respectively (p = 0.238). The complications were primarily grade 1 or 2. Grade 3 and 4 complications were found in 13 of 274 and 7 of 206 in Ir-192 and Co-60 groups, respectively (p = 0.232). Grade and clinical stage of cancer significantly affected the survival outcome. CONCLUSION: Cervical cancer patients who were treated with HDR Co-60 brachytherapy were comparable in survival and toxicity outcomes of those with HDR Ir-192 brachytherapy. Co-60 source has lots of economic advantages over Ir-192 and hence suitable for low resource radiotherapy setting.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to rationalize the feasibility and cost‑effectiveness of high dose rate (HDR) cobalt 60 (Co‑60) source versus 192‑Iridium (192‑Ir) source brachytherapy in government funded hospitals and treatment interruption gap because of exchange of sources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of gynecological cancer patients, treated by radiotherapy with curative intent between April 2005 and September 2012 was conducted. We analyzed the total number of patients treated for external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and brachytherapy (Intracavitary brachytherapy or cylindrical vaginal source). The dates for 192‑Ir sources installation and the last date and first date of brachytherapy procedure before and after source installation respectively were also analyzed and calculated the gap in days for brachytherapy interruptions. RESULTS: The study was analyzed the records of 2005 to September 2012 year where eight 192‑Ir sources were installed. The mean gap between treatment interruptions was 123.12 days (range 1‑647 days). The Institutional incidence of gynecological cancer where radiotherapy was treatment modality (except ovary) is 34.9 percent. Around 52.25 percent of patients who received EBRT at this institute were referred to outside hospital for brachytherapy because of unavailability of Iridium source. The cost for 5 year duration for single cobalt source is approximately 20‑22 lakhs while for 15 Iridium sources is approximately 52‑53 lakhs. CONCLUSION: The combined HDR Co‑60 brachytherapy and EBRT provide a useful modality in the treatment of gynecological cancer where radiotherapy is indicated, the treatment interruption because of source exchange is longer and can be minimized by using cobalt source as it is cost‑effective and has 5 year working life. Thus, Co‑60 source for brachytherapy is a feasible option for government funded hospitals in developing countries.

RESUMEN

The present work describes the preparation of hydrogel based on cross-linked networks of poly (N-vinylpirrolidone), PVP, with polyethyleneglicol and agar with 90% water and PVP nancomposites with a synthetic nanoclay, Laponite XLG, for use as burn dressings. These systems were obtained in two ways: using gamma Co-60 and electron beam radiation. The gelation obtained dose was Dg= 1.72 kGy. The elastic modulus of hydrogel was independent of the method of irradiation. It was 0.39 MPa for the hydrogel irradiated with gamma Co-60 and 0.38 MPa for electron beam irradiation. The elastic modulus of the nanocomposite membrane was 1.25 MPa, three times higher. These results indicate that the PVP/Laponite XLG nanocomposite hydrogel membrane is the best choice for wound dressing applications due to its high water sorption capacity and its superior mechanical properties.

The increasing consumption of natural products has brought about problems related to public health due to the risk of fungi contamination and the considerable possibility of mycotoxin presence. The aim of this work was to identify the fungi species with mycotoxigenic potential and to evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation (60Co) on killing the natural fungi microbiota of five medicinal plants: artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.), boldo (Peumusboldus Molina), chamomile (Matricaria recutita L.), burhead (Echinodorusgrandiflorus Micheli), and senna (Cassia acutifolia Delile). The qualification of filamentous fungi and yeast was carried out utilizing the Technique of Serial Dilutions on DRBC medium. Eight isolates of Aspergillus flavus were identified onchamomile, two (25 percent) beingproducers of aflatoxins B1 and B2 as well as five isolates of Aspergillus ochraceus, two (40 percent) being producers of ocratoxin. On artichoke, one isolate of Aspergillus ostianus was identified as ocratoxin A producer. A reduction on the total counting of fungi was observed in boldo with irradiation higher than 3 kGy, and in both burhead and senna with irradiation higher than 5 kGy. The initial counting on artichoke of 5.0 x 10(6) CFU/g experienced a reduction to 3.5 x 10² with doses of 10 kGy. With this same dose the fungi counting on chamomile was reduced from 3.0 x 10(5) CFU/g to 2.2 x 10³ CFU/g.

The effect of gamma radiation from a 60Co source on the structure of a nonionic surfactant, namely TRITON X-100, was investigated. Three main regions can be distinguished in the behavior of the mean value of ethoxy groups with an increase in the absorbed dose. However just a slightly decrease on this mean value was obtained when the dose range from 0 to 70 kGy.

RESUMEN

Electron contamination due to the interaction between radiation beam and material was analyzed for the factors such as source-skin distance(SSD), field size, tray characteristics and position of filter, which can affect the surface dose in Cobalt teletherapy. Surface dose in open beam was more influenced by SSD with increasing field size. Relative surface charge(RSC) increased with the use of tray(solid, circular hole, slotted), compared with open beam, which is thought to be doe to increased electron contamination of the tray. To reduce the surface dose, 0.4mm thick Lipowitz metal filter was used. Compared with open beam, RSC decreased by 8.8%, 11.3%, 13.3%, 16.6%, 19.3% and 21.7% for the field size of 5x5, 10x10, 15x15, 20x20, 25x25 and 30x30 cm2, respectively. On the contrary, use of Lipowitz metal filter increased RSC at 60cm or less SSD. Suface dose was effectively reduced with Lpowitz metal filter placed right below solid tray in Cobalt teletherapy.
