RESUMEN

Background & objectives: Information available on drug consumption is inadequate in most low and middle income countries. This systematic review was conducted to analyse published work on drug utilization research/studies (DUR) in the SEARO region of WHO for study objectives, methodology, results and recommendations and to identify the need for improving DUR and the use of the ATC/DDD system. Methods: A literature search for DUR was carried out in biomedical databases (PubMed, Scirus, Scopus and Google Scholar) up to May 2012. Publications were selected if those were in the English language, describing DUR or prescription practices, and study conducted in the WHO-SEARO countries. Results: A total of 318 publications were included in the review. Of these, 67 per cent were from India and 13 per cent were from Thailand. Majority of the publications were hospital based; only 16 per cent were community based. The ATC/DDD system was used in only 20 per cent of the publications, of which 73 per cent publications used DDD indicators. Several publications focused on antibiotics (31%). Publications that recommended the need for a policy or intervention to improve prescription practices/rational drug use amounted to 35 per cent. Interpretation & conclusions: Drug utilization studies using ATC/DDD system need to be promoted and carried out on an ongoing basis. DUR is important for rational use of drugs. Its relevance to policy making and resource allocation needs to be emphasized.

RESUMEN

To assess the drug utilization and tendency of progress of oral hypoglycemic agents in our hospital and to provide references for rational administration clinically. Methods: DDDs, sales quantities, sales expenses and the ratio of sales expenses sequencing to that of DDDs in our hospital during the period of 2003 ~ 2005 were analyzed statistically with the method of DDDs analysis. Results:The top two antidiabetic drugs according to DDDs were melbine ( dimethyl diguanide) and gliclazide three successive years. The DDDs of acarbose increased dramatically. Which blood glucose regulatsry drugs ranked lower, the ratio of sales expenses sequencing to that of DDDs of glipizide and gliclazide controlled release pellets was equal or about, whereas that of rosiglitazone, acarbose(glucobay) and glimepiride was less than 1. Conclusion:The study shows that the drug utilization of oral hypoglycemic agents in our hospital is basically rational and is in accordance with the trend of advancement and drug therapeutic strategies of diabetes mellitus.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE:To inspect the status quo of the consumption and the developmental tendency of antidepressants.METHODS:The relative data of16kinds of frequently used antidepressants in6cities from1998to2004were statistically analyzed by the ordering of consumption sum and frequency of drug use(DDDs).RESULTS:The consumption sum and fre?quency of drug use(DDDs)kept increasing year by year, which increased by312.56%and163.49%,respectively in year2004compared with year1998.The consumption amount of expensive new type antidepressants, mostly from import and joint-venture,had a big increase, while that of the low costs such as the tricyclic category was on the decrease.CONCLUSION:The pharmaceutical business of our country should speed up to develop the same kind of safe, valid, stable and economical drug within the permission of intellectual property rights to meet the multistrata demands of the market.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the utilization information of drug combination in tuberculosis control item in Shaoguan and the economics effect.METHODS:The defined daily dose(DDD)and drug utilization index(DUI)were taken as indexes for the evaluation of rational use of drugs, the utilization of chemotherapy drugs of the tuberculosis control item in Shaoguan urban field from1993to2003was analyzed;the cost-effectiveness of scheme B(tuberculosis control item chemotherapy)and scheme A(conventional chemotherapy)were analyzed.RESULTS:DUI for all of the drug combinations except B4were no more than1(DUI≤1),The cure rate(E 1 )and the effect rate(E 2 )for scheme B were96.5%and98.8%respectively;E 1 and E 2 in scheme A were65.7%and79.5%respectively.The cost-effectiveness ratio of scheme B was lower than that of scheme A.The cost-effectiveness ratio(C/E 1 )for the two schemes were8.59and25.31respectively if counted by cure rate and which(C/E 2 )were8.39and20.92respectively if counted by effect rate(E2).CONCLUSION:The utilization of tuberculosis control item drug combinations in Shaoguan city is comparatively reasonable and the economic effect is good.
