RESUMEN

Objective:To construct a three-dimensional time-dose-response model for dose estimation and validate its feasibility. Methods:Based on a random number table, mice were divided into 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 Gy groups for whole-body X-ray irradiation, with each group consisting of three mice. Hair follicle cells of whiskers were sampled at 1, 6, and 24 h after the irradiation. After immunofluorescence staining, the numbers of γ-H2AX foci at different time points from 1 to 24 h post-irradiation were observed using a confocal laser scanning microscope. The average numbers of γ-H2AX foci observed were corrected using the Dolphin’s model, followed by the fitting of dose-response curves. Using the R software, the equations and surfaces of the three-dimensional model for partial-body irradiation were established using the irradiation doses, post-irradiation time, and the corrected average numbers of γ-H2AX foci. Results:The average number of γ-H2AX foci increased with dose at fixed time points 1, 6, and 24 h but decreased with irradiation time at fixed doses 2, 4, 6, and 8 Gy. The dose-response curve equations of partial-body irradiation were fitted as follows: YF = 2.853+ 3.775 D, R2= 0.928, at 1 h after the irradiation; YF = 0.144+ 2.775 D, R2= 0.903, at 6 h after the irradiation; YF = 0.066+ 2.472 D, R2= 0.85, at 24 h after the irradiation. The three-dimensional model equation fitted was YF = 6.837 t-1.728+ 3.113 t-0.071D, R2=0.897. Substituting different post-irradiation time points into the three-dimensional surface model appeared as a two-dimensional linear model. By substituting the number of γ-H2AX foci and irradiation time into the linear and the three-dimensional models, both models yielded relative deviations between the estimated and actual radiation doses of 30% or less. Conclusions:The three-dimensional time-dose-response model, established by using the number of γ-H2AX foci to estimate partial-body irradiation doses, can be preliminarily applied for dose estimation at all time points 1-24 h after irradiation.

RESUMEN

Facial foreign body (FB) is common after trauma, but iatrogenic orbital FB is a rare and unexpected complication of facial FB removal surgery. We present the case of a 43-year-old man with a glass FB in his nose. During the operation, this FB broke into two pieces, and the larger one pierced into the left orbit, close to the eyeball. A three-dimensional (3D) model was made that accurately recreated the shape and position of the FB in the orbit, according to which the FB was removed. 3D-printing technology is a great tool when dealing with complex facial FB.

RESUMEN

【Objective】 To establish a digital model of lumbar 4 and lumbar 5 vertebral bodies through three-dimensional imaging technology so as to explore the precise placement of pedicle screws during the lumbar posterior internal fixation operation. 【Methods】 CT scan image data set of lumbar spine included six specimens. Then lumbar modeling was produced using Mimics software, implanting pedicle screws was simulated with the computer to determine the reliability of pedicle screw for herringbone crest method, Weinstein method, and Magerl method. 【Results】 This study included six specimens (4 males and 2 females), with an average age of 42.83 years. The distance from the right Magerl entry point to the actual entry point of the lumbar 4 vertebrae was significantly greater than that of the left side. The distance from the left herringbone crest entry point of lumbar 4 vertebrae to the actual entry point was significantly greater than Weinstein method and Magerl method (PMagerl abduction angle > Weinstein abduction angle > herringbone abduction angle. The distances of true-Weinstein and true-herringbone ridges on the left side of lumbar 5 vertebrae were significantly greater than those on the right side (P=0.002 and P=0.004), and the Weinstein abduction angle on the right side of lumbar 5 vertebrae was greater than that on the left side (P=0.003). For the left and right sides of lumbar 5 vertebrae, the distance from herringbone crest entry point to the actual entry point was significantly greater than that of Weinstein method and Magerl method (P Magerl abduction angle > Weinstein abduction angle > herringbone abduction angle. 【Conclusion】 Both Weinstein entry point and Magerl entry point for lumbar 4 and lumbar 5 vertebra are close to the real entry point. The Weinstein abduction angle and Magerl abduction angle of lumbar 4 and lumbar 5 vertebrae have minor differences compared with real abduction angle. Therefore, it is recommended that Weinstein method is the preferred choice for lumbar 4 pedicle screw placement, while Weinstein method or Magerl method is the preferred choice for lumbar 5 pedicle screw placement.

Abstract: Background: Within the study of the structure of ADHD there is an ongoing debate as to whether phenotypic differences are due to differences in the severity of symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity along an underlying continuum or whether the differences reflect are qualitatively distinct subtypes with unique etiologies. Objective: To analyze whether the behaviors of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity in children reflect qualitatively different presentations within ADHD, variations along a single continuum of severity or different levels of severity within the representations. Method: A study was carried out through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), latent class analysis (LCA) and factor mixture models (FMM) of the ADHD phenotype according to the data collected through the Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory (CABI) of 632 participants (M = 10.46 years; SD = 2.35) from the city of Talca (Chile) in general population. Results: For the 16 models analyzed, it was inferred that the MFM of three factors (IN, HI and IM) and four classes, a majority with a low score (unaffected) and a minority with a high score (affected), with two very similar intermediate categories, showed the best fit. Conclusions: The FMM showed that ADHD would vary along a continuum of severity, within symptoms of the disorder from mild, to moderate, or severe, rather than existing as discrete diagnostic categories.

RESUMEN

Abstract The alternative model of personality disorders introduced in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders provides a diagnostic system that is expected to correspond to the well-known categorical approach of personality disorder diagnoses. The current study aims to improve knowledge about the relationship between pathological personality traits and their corresponding personality types. A Brazilian sample of 1,162 people took part in this study. The results point to some level of continuity between the two models when the variables were treated as dimensional. Contrariwise, there is a lack of strong scientific evidence to justify the maintenance of the categorical approach. We recommend the exclusion of the categorical approach from personality disorder diagnosis systems.

Abstract Schizotypy can be understood as a disorder included in the schizophrenia spectrum or as a psychometric trait that includes three factors: cognitive-perceptual, interpersonal, and disorganized. The first relates to strange beliefs and unusual perceptual experiences; the second, with anhedonia and deficits in interpersonal relationships, and the third, disorganisation, is identified with strange thoughts, behaviors, and language. Several studies have attempted to clarify which of these dimensions is more relevant when predicting the construct. To answer this question, a meta-analysis was conducted using a systematic review of the major databases comparing schizotypy dimensions associated with different categories: structure, health, and vulnerability markers. A total of 27 studies were selected from 300 items found. The results indicate that the interpersonal dimension seems to be related to clinical symptoms, while the cognitive-perceptual dimension dominates research on vulnerability markers. Cognitive disorganization contributes to both topics. It is concluded that the dimensions of schizotypy have a differential importance in terms of the areas of psychological functioning under study.

The dog's elbow joint is a very complex structure formed between the humeral condyle, the radial head and the ulnar trochlear notch. This joint is prone to suffer growth disorders, traumatic injuries, and degenerative conditions. All these problems used to be solved by surgical means, nevertheless, the surgical plan, results in a complex decision making process related with the aforementioned joint characteristics, three dimensional (3D) anatomical models from computed tomography have proven to be useful in the surgical approach, nevertheless the image technique is at some point limited, mainly identifying soft tissues. Ultrathin plastinated slices (1 mm) allows to perform very detailed descriptions of complex structures and 3D reconstructions as well. The aim of this work, was to obtain a 3D reconstruction of ultrathin plastinated elbow joint in the dog.

The arterial stiffness increased is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases, which constitute one of the first causes of death globally. For this reason the development of noninvasive methods to quantify arterial stiffness have had great impact. The purpose of this paper is the study of the noninvasive measurement method of brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). To perform this study pressure waveforms in the arterial system were simulated, by using a one-dimensional model. With these pressure waveforms baPWV's values were calculated, and were compared with two others calculated methods: cfPWV (carotid-femoral PWV, gold standard method), and PWVteor (Bramwell-Hill equation). Significant correlations were obtained, r=0.967 y r=0.9828 respectively. The sensibility of the baPWV method to the stiffness change, represented for the distensibility change, was investigated, and we conclude that baPWV method is sensitive to the changes that take place in both central and peripheral arteries.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims at exploring associations between a continuous measure of distorted thought contents and a set of demographic and clinical features in a sample of unipolar/bipolar depressed patients. METHODS: Our sample included 1,833 depressed subjects. Severity of mood symptoms was assessed by the 21 items Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). The continuous outcome measure was represented by a delusion (DEL) factor, extracted from HAM-D items and including items: 2 ("Feelings of guilt"), 15 ("Hypochondriasis"), and 20 ("Paranoid symptoms"). Each socio-demographic and clinical variable was tested by a generalized linear model test, having depressive severity (HAM-D score-DEL score) as the covariate. RESULTS: A family history of major depressive disorder (MDD; p=0.0006), a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, type I ( p=0.0003), a comorbid general anxiety disorder (p<0.0001), and a higher number of manic episodes during lifetime (p<0.0001), were all associated to higher DEL scores. Conversely, an older age at onset (p<0.0001) and a longer duration of hospitalization for depression over lifetime (p=0.0003) had a negative impact over DEL scores. On secondary analyses, only the presence of psychotic features (p<0.0001) and depressive severity (p<0.0001) were found to be independently associated to higher DEL scores. CONCLUSION: The retrospective design and a non validated continuous measure for distorted thought contents were the main limitations of our study. Excluding the presence of psychotic features and depressive severity, no socio-demographic or clinical variable was found to be associated to our continuous measure of distorted thinking in depression.

RESUMEN

Objective By using digital three-dimensional (3D) model of abdominal and pelvic vessels to investigate the relationship between the angle/position of the bifurcation of bilateral common iliac arteries and the length of the common iliac artery, thus to guide the endovascular interventional catheterization manipulation. Methods A total of 439 patients, who received abdominal and pelvic CTA at authors’ department during the period from Sep. 2011 to May 2013, were included in this study. By using digital 3D reformation technique, the 3D model of the abdominal and pelvic vessels as well as the lumbosacral vertebrae was established in all patients. With the help of mimics and geomagic software the angles between the left and right common iliac arteries and the lengths of common iliac arteries were determined, and the lumbar vertebra corresponding to the bifurcation of common iliac arteries was recorded. Using statistical software, the relationship between the bifurcation angle of bilateral common iliac arteries and the corresponding lumbar vertebra as well as the length of common iliac arteries was analyzed. Results The digital 3D model of the abdominal and pelvic vessels as well as the lumbosacral vertebrae was successfully reconstructed in all 439 patients. Both the angle between the left and right common iliac arteries and the corresponding lumbosacral level of bifurcation angle were clearly demonstrated on the model. The average angle was 49.1° ± 12.4°. The bifurcation was located at L3 -L4 level in 38 cases, at upper one-third level of L4 in 63 cases, at middle one third level of L4 in 89 cases, at lower one-third level of L4 in 135 cases and at L4 -L5 level in 114 cases. The average length of the left and right common iliac artery was (45.6 ± 15.6) mm and (43.3 ± 15.4) mm respectively. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that a negative correlation existed between the angle and the position level of the left and the right common iliac artery (r = -0.172, P< 0.05), and a negative correlation also existed between the angle and the length of the common iliac artery (left: r = -0.171, P<0.05; right: r = -0.164, P < 0.05). Conclusion The lower the opening position of the left and right common iliac artery is, and the bigger the intersection angle is, the shorter the length of corresponding common iliac artery will be. In this case, catheterization via femoral artery to contralateral iliac artery is a short path, and the catheterization procedure is easy to manipulate with higher success rate. On the contrary, the catheterization will be difficult, and the use of loop-technique will be needed. The digital 3D model of the abdominal and pelvic vessels as well as the lumbosacral vertebrae can help select the optimal catheterization path.

RESUMEN

Objective:To evaluate of the feasibility of low-dose CT(LDCT)in the reconstruction of three-dimensional(3D)model of maxillofacial hard and soft tissues. Methods:Lightspeed 16-slice spiral CT scanner was used to scan one adult cadaveric head specimens with conventional parameters(280 mA)and low dose parameters(200,150,100,50,35,25,15 and 5 mA)respectively;the 3D model of the hard and soft tissues were reconstructed with Mimics 10.01 software, and 3D comparison were carried on with Geomagic 11.0 software.A comparison of the surface morphology of the hard and soft tissues of the 3D models with different scanning parameters was made. Results:With the reduction of the tube current, the model surface became rough gradually.Compared with the 280 mA scan results, the model surface produced by 35 mA scanning was still fairing, when the dose fell to less than 25 mA,the model surface became rough and the exact shape of the model could not be recognized. The same results of model surface were pro-duced after registration. Conclusion:The low-dose (35 mA)CT can be used to reconstruct 3D model of the maxillofacial hard and soft tissues.
