RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To report a case of pleomorphic adenoma arising in the ectopic lacrimal gland of the lower eyelid. CASE SUMMARY: A 36-year-old male presented with a gradually increasing mass in the left lower eyelid that had been growing for one year. A hard, non-tender, subcutaneous mass was palpated on the lateral one-third of the left lower eyelid, and there were no clinically specific signs. Orbital computed tomography demonstrated a well-demarcated 1 x 0.7 x 0.7-cm-sized mass with heterogeneous enhancement, and complete surgical resection was performed. The mass was non-adjacent to the conjunctiva and inferior tarsal plate. Histological examination showed glandular elements embedded in a myxoid stroma. The mass was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma arising in the ectopic lacrimal gland. At the postoperative 6-month follow-up, there was no recurrence or abnormal finding at the operation site. CONCLUSIONS: Pleomorphic adenoma arising in the ectopic lacrimal gland should be considered as a differential diagnosis of eyelid masses.

RESUMEN

Ectopic lacrimal gland denotes a lacrimal gland which is located anywhere other than its normal site, lacrimal fossa, and it can occur in places like conjunctiva, cornea, lid, nasal mucosa, and orbit. It is a rare congenital anomaly and needs to be differentiated form other tumors. The literature contains few reports of ectopic lacrimal gland. We experienced a case of a 28-year-old Korean man who presented with an ectopic lacrimal gland with duct at temporal aspect of bulbar conjunctiva. The glandular tissue was excised and was histopathologically confirmed as such. We report it with reviews of the literature concerned.

RESUMEN

Complex choristoma with a predominance of lacrimal gland tissue is known as unusual congenital and developmental abnormality. Several cases of ectopic lacrimal gland have been reported in Korea. But complex choristoma with ectopic lacrimal gland on both eyes has never been reported. The authors have experienced a case of complex choristoma with ectopic lacrimal gland in lower and lateral quadrant of bulbar conjuntiva on both eyes in a 12-year-old boy.

RESUMEN

A 23-year-old woman visited our clinic for the evaluation of a small bean-sized mass in the right lower eyelid. She noticed a mass in the right lower eyelid 6 years ago. The mass was treated with incision and curettage under the impression of chalazion twice at the local clinic, but recurred soon after the operation. On examination, the visual acuity was 1.0 in both eyes. A firm, non-tender, smooth, movable and small bean-sized mass was palpable in the right lower eyelid. A white scar from the previous operation was seen on the palpebral conjunctiva of the right lower eyelid. The mass was excised through the conjunctiva. The histopathological diagnosis of the excised mass was benign mixed tumor. The patient was recommended of further radical excision. The pentagon-shaped excision of the right lower eyelid under frozen section control was done 2 weeks after the first operation. The patient is doing well as of now. The benign mixed tumor of the lower eyelid can arise from either ectopic lacrimal gland or accessory lacrimal gland.

RESUMEN

Choristoma are tissue masses normally not present at the involved site and can be classified into 4 groups, epidermoid cyst, dermoid cyst, teratoma and ectopic lacrimal gland. Ectopic lacrimal gland is an unusual congenital and developmental abnormality and may be associated with other choristomatous tissues as muscle, nerve, cartilage or various dermal appendages. We have recently experienced a case of ectopic lacrimal gland associated with muscle, fat, nerve, tissue in the lateral side of bulbar conjunctiva in the right eye of a 23 year-old korean girl.

RESUMEN

The medical literature contains few reports of ectopic lacrimal gland. Ectopic lacrimal gland has been observed in the eye and in various sites in the ocular adnexa. The authors had experienced one case of ectopic lacrimal gland in the super olateral side of orbit. The authors report this case with the review of literatures.
