Introduction: Natural products are an option to be used in different conditions in the oral cavity, such as Camellia sinensis, which due to its different properties would be beneficial in the erosion of the dental surface. Objetive: Determinar el efecto del extracto de Camellia sinensis (C. sinensis) adicionado con flúor frente a la acción erosiva de ácidos no bacterianos en la superficie de la dentina humana. Materials and Methods: Quasi-experimental, prospective, longitudinal, and in vitro study, consisting of 50 samples of human dentin, which were classified into 5 study groups: distilled water, hydrochloric acid, 2% C. sinensis extract, sodium fluoride. 2% and 2% C. sinensis extract added with 2% sodium fluoride. The surface roughness of each sample was evaluated with the SRT6200 digital roughness meter, obtaining a total average roughness and the measurements were carried out in two moments. Results: It was observed that the 2% C. sinensis extract, the 2% sodium fluoride, and the C. sinensis extract added with 2% sodium fluoride, showed a variation in surface roughness between before and after, which was not significant (p<0.05) in all cases. It should be noted that the C. sinensis plus sodium fluoride group is the one that obtained the best variation in the mean surface roughness than the other groups studied. Conclusions: The 2% C. sinensis extract, 2% sodium fluoride, and the combination of both compounds demonstrated an inhibitory effect against the erosive action of hydrochloric acid (0.01 M) on the dentin surface, not presenting a statistically significant difference in the results.


Introducción: Los productos naturales son una opción para ser usados en diferentes afecciones en la cavidad bucal, como lo podría ser la Camellia sinensis, que por sus diferentes propiedades sería de beneficio en la erosión de la superficie dental. Objetivo: Determinar el efecto del extracto de Camellia sinensis (C. sinensis) adicionado con flúor frente a la acción erosiva de ácidos no bacterianos en la superficie de la dentina humana. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio cuasi experimental, prospectivo, longitudinal ein vitro, constituido por 50 muestras de dentina de dientes permanentes, que se clasificaron en 5 grupos de estudio: Agua destilada, ácido clorhídrico, extracto de C. sinensis a 2%, fluoruro de sodio al 2% y extracto de C. sinensisa 2% adicionado con fluoruro de sodio al 2%. Se evaluó la rugosidad superficial de cada muestra con el rugosímetro digital SRT6200, obteniéndose una rugosidad media total y se realizaron las mediciones en dos momentos. Resultado: Se observó que el extracto de C. sinensisal 2%, el fluoruro de sodio al 2% y el extracto de C. sinensis adicionado con fluoruro de sodio al 2%, presentaron una variación de la rugosidad superficial entre el antes y el después, no siendo esta significativa (p<0.05) en todos los casos. Cabe resaltar que el grupo C. sinensis más fluoruro de sodio, es el que obtuvo una mejor variación de la media de rugosidad superficial, que los otros grupos estudiados. Conclusión: El extracto de C. sinensisal 2%, el fluoruro de sodio al 2% y la combinación de ambos compuestos demostraron un efecto inhibitorio frente a la acción erosiva del ácido clorhídrico (0,01 M) en la superficie de dentina, no presentando una diferencia estadísticamente significativa en los resultados.

RESUMEN Objetivo : Evaluar el efecto remineralizante de una saliva sintética en el esmalte dental bovino erosionado. Materiales y métodos : Se prepararon 50 bloques de esmalte de dientes de bovino. Las muestras fueron divididas en 5 grupos de estudio según el tratamiento: grupo A (Colgate Total®, pasta de dientes que contiene fluoruro), grupo B (MI Paste Plus®, pasta de dientes que contiene fosfopéptido de caseína-fosfato de calcio amorfo [CPP-ACP] con fluoruro), grupo C (Salival® Solución, saliva sintética), grupo D (agua destilada) y grupo E (sin tratamiento). Todos los especímenes de los grupos A, B, C y D recibieron ataques con ácido cítrico al 0,5 % durante 2 minutos a las 0, 8, 24 y 32 horas. Después de cada ataque ácido, se aplicaron las pastas de dientes correspondientes a cada grupo de tratamiento. Luego se procedió a evaluar el grado de mineralización mediante microscopía Raman y la microdureza superficial mediante microdureza Vickers. Resultados : Respecto al grado de mineralización y la dureza superficial, no se encontraron diferencias significativas (p > 0,05) en el esmalte dental bovino erosionado tratado con Colgate Total®, MI Paste Plus® y Salival® Solución en comparación con las muestras de esmalte sano; sin embargo, todas presentaron un grado de mineralización y dureza superficial significativamente mayor que las muestras de esmalte de dientes bovinos erosionados conservados en agua destilada (p < 0,05). Conclusión : Este estudio in vitro muestra que la saliva sintética Salival® Solución tiene un potencial remineralizante en el esmalte bovino erosionado.


ABSTRACT Objective : To evaluate the remineralizing effect of synthetic saliva on eroded bovine dental enamel. Materials and methods : 50 enamel blocks were prepared from bovine teeth. The specimens were divided into 5 study groups according to treatment: group A (Colgate Total®, toothpaste containing fluoride), group B (MI Paste Plus®, toothpaste containing casein phosphopeptide, amorphous calcium phosphate [CPP-ACP] with fluoride), group C (Salival® Solution, synthetic saliva), group D (distilled water) and group E (no treatment). All specimens in groups A, B, C and D received 0.5% citric acid attacks for 2 minutes at 0, 8, 24 and 32 hours. After each acid attack, toothpastes corresponding to each treatment group were applied. The degree of mineralization was then evaluated by Raman microscopy and surface microhardness by Vickers microhardness. Results : Regarding the degree of mineralization and surface hardness, no significant differences (p > 0.05) were found in the eroded bovine tooth enamel treated with Colgate Total®, Mi Paste Plus® and Salival® Solution in comparison with the healthy enamel samples. But all presented a significantly higher degree of mineralization and surface hardness than the eroded bovine tooth enamel samples preserved in distilled water (p < 0.05). Conclusion : This in vitro study shows that the synthetic saliva Salival® Solution has a remineralizing potential on eroded bovine enamel.


RESUMO Objetivo : Avaliar o efeito remineralizante de uma saliva sintética no esmalte dentário bovino erodido. Materiais e métodos : Foram preparados 50 blocos de esmalte de dentes de bovinos. As amostras foram divididas em 5 grupos de estudo de acordo com o tratamento: grupo A (Colgate Total®, pasta dentífrica contendo flúor), grupo B (MI Paste Plus®, pasta dentífrica contendo fosfopeptídeo de caseína, fosfato de cálcio amorfo [CPP-ACP] com flúor), grupo C (Salival® Solution, saliva sintética), grupo D (água destilada) e grupo E (sem tratamento). Todos os espécimes dos grupos A, B, C e D receberam um ataque ácido cítrico a 0,5% durante 2 minutos às 0, 8, 24 e 32 horas. Após cada ataque ácido, foram aplicadas as pastas dentífricas correspondentes a cada grupo de tratamento. O grau de mineralização foi então avaliado por microscopia Raman e a microdureza superficial por microdureza Vickers. Resultados : Relativamente ao grau de mineralização e à dureza da superfície, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas (p > 0,05) no esmalte dentário bovino erodido tratado com Colgate Total®, Mi Paste Plus® e Salival® Solution em comparação com as amostras de esmalte saudável. Mas todos mostraram um grau significativamente mais elevado de mineralização e dureza superficial do que as amostras de esmalte de dentes de bovinos erodidos preservados em água destilada (p < 0,05). Conclusão : Este estudo in vitro mostra que a saliva sintética Salival® Solution tem um potencial remineralizante no esmalte bovino erodido.

BACKGROUND:In chronic gout patients,sodium urate is deposited in bone joints and around synovial membranes,eroding and destroying bone,leading to serious complications such as gouty arthritis and deformity.Research on the mechanisms by which sodium urate crystals erode and destroy bone can help early clinical intervention in gouty diseases and prevent and delay the complications caused by bone destruction. OBJECTIVE:To explore the destructive effects of gout crystals on bone through clinical imaging studies and experimental basic research,review the current progress and development prospects of research on the phenomenon and mechanism of bone destruction caused by gout,guide the clinical early intervention of gouty bone destruction,and guide the direction of research on the role of bone destruction. METHODS:The Chinese search terms were"gout,bone destruction,bone erosion"and the English search terms were"tophi,gout,RANKL,bone destruction,bone erosion,"which were used in the computer search of WanFang and PubMed databases.Finally,64 articles were selected for review according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The specific manifestations of clinical studies(imaging,histopathology)to some extent elaborate the osteolytic process of gout,and in basic studies,the mechanism of gout-causing bone destruction can be divided into the five aspects:(1)Sodium acid crystals have an important role in bone destruction,directly affecting osteocytes,chondrocytes,osteoblasts and proresorptive factors that promote bone destruction;(2)Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand and other proresorptive factors are involved in bone destruction;(3)T cell-mediated cellular immunity functions as a bridge in bone destruction,and activated T cells induce osteoclast differentiation;(4)Monocytes/macrophages are not only precursors of osteoclast-like cells,but also induce the expression of proresorptive factors such as Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand;(5)Neutrophils affect the morphology of osteoclast arrangement,and neutrophil extracellular trap networks promote osteolysis by promoting osteoclast differentiation.

Objective@#To explore the oral mucosal manifestations of Sweet’s syndrome and provide a reference for its early detection and correct diagnosis.@*Methods@#The oral mucosal manifestations of a 60-year-old female patient with Sweet’s syndrome are described in detail, followed by a discussion of the related literature.@*Results@#The patient had skin erythema of both lower extremities, which was accompanied by oral mucosal ulceration and pain for 3 days. The patient presented with mild cutaneous lesions and diffuse large-scale erosion in the oral mucosa with obvious pain. During the onset of the disease, the patient was accompanied by fever with a temperature of 38.5°C. After visiting the Department of Stomatology, laboratory tests showed an increase in C-reactive protein (35.2 mg/L) and an accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (77.00 mm/h). Scattered red plaques and mild tenderness were observed in the knees and lower limbs. Histopathological examination of the skin lesions revealed scattered infiltration of immature neutrophils across the entire dermis. The patient responded well to glucocorticoid therapy. According to the clinical signs and laboratory examination, combined with the lesion histopathological results, a diagnosis of Sweet’s syndrome was given. The patient was administered 1 mL compound Betamethasone injection only once intramuscularly. In the meantime, the patient was asked to gargle with compound chlorhexidine solution and topically apply recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor solution to the damaged mucosa three times a day for 1 week. After 4 days of medication, the patient’s body temperature had returned to normal and the oral lesions were significantly reduced. After 2 weeks, the erythema in the leg and knee had almost all subsided, and the oral mucosal lesions had disappeared. The patient was followed up 6 months after treatment, with no recurrence of skin lesions. After 2 years of follow-up, the disease was stable with no recurrence. A review of the relevant literature shows that Sweet’s syndrome is a rare inflammatory reactive dermatosis with unknown etiology, which can be divided into three clinical types: specific, tumor-related, and drug-induced. The male/female prevalence ratio is 1:4. The salient clinical manifestations are abrupt onset of painful erythematous plaques or nodules most commonly involving the extremities, often accompanied by pyrexia, elevated neutrophil count, elevation of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and positive C-reactive protein. The use of glucocorticoids is the most common treatment for this disease, and most patients see a rapid improvement in skin lesions; however, some may experience infection or recurrence after withdrawal. Some patients with Sweet’s syndrome are accompanied by oral lesions, but cases of oral mucosal damage have been rarely reported, and this condition is easily misdiagnosed.@*Conclusion@#Oral mucosal lesions may be extraterritorial manifestations of Sweet’s syndrome, and the patient’s systemic condition should be comprehensively considered. Skin biopsy should be completed as soon as possible to make a clear diagnosis, so as not to delay the disease.

ABSTRACT Background: Chikungunya fever is an emerging global infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes that manifests as an acute febrile illness with joint pain and can lead to chronic arthritis. The mechanism underlying chronic joint damage remains unclear; however, chronic chikungunya arthritis shares similarities with rheumatoid arthritis. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs have revolutionized rheumatoid arthritis treatment by preventing joint damage. However, the role of these therapies in chronic chikungunya arthritis has not been determined. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the burden of joint structural damage in chronic chikungunya arthritis to help to define the role of disease-modifying therapy in this disease. Methods: This systematic review included retrospective and prospective studies, trials, and case reports evaluating joint damage caused by chikungunya virus. Various databases were searched without any date or language restrictions. Study selection was conducted independently by two researchers, and data were extracted from the articles selected. Results: A total of 108 studies were initially evaluated, with 8 meeting the inclusion criteria. Longitudinal studies have reported persistent joint pain from chikungunya infection and the progression of radiographic joint damage up to 13 years post-infection. Joint imaging revealed synovial inflammation, bone erosion, and cartilage destruction in patients with chronic chikungunya arthritis. Conclusions: Few studies have addressed chikungunya-induced joint damage, limiting our understanding of chronic chikungunya arthritis. Nevertheless, chronic chikungunya arthritis has similarities to rheumatoid arthritis. The success of early disease-modifying antirheumatic drug therapy in rheumatoid arthritis underscores the need for comprehensive research on its role in chikungunya arthritis.

Abstract Objective: To identify the prevalence, severity, hypersensitivity, and distribution of Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) among university students in Brazil. Material and Methods: 179 participants answered an anamnesis with twenty questions about the presence or absence of habits associated with NCCL. The participants' teeth were evaluated to identify the presence or absence of the lesion, its classification, involved surfaces, severity, hypersensitivity, and tooth wear index. A hypersensitivity test was performed with ice water. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and simple logistic regression (p<0.01). The participants' teeth were evaluated to identify the presence or absence of the lesion, its classification, involved surfaces, severity, hypersensitivity, and tooth wear index. A hypersensitivity test was performed with ice water. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and simple logistic regression (p<0.01). Conclusion: The prevalence of NCCL was 15.1% and abfraction was the most frequent lesion. Premolars were the teeth most affected by non-carious cervical lesions.

Abstract Accurate determination of the prevalence of erosive tooth wear (ETW) and associated risk factors in adolescents can inform clinical management guidelines. The aim of this analytical cross-sectional study was to estimate the prevalence, severity, and risk factors of ETW in adolescents aged 12-15 years in the municipality of Usaquén in Bogotá, Colombia. Two calibrated examiners clinically assessed ETW using Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) Index (range: 0-3). All tooth surfaces (excluding proximal) were scored to allow estimation of the Highest (0-3) and Total BEWE (sum of Highest BEWE score per sextant: 0-18) scores per patient. Sociodemographic characteristics, ETW risk factors, and caries severity (ICDAS-epi-merged) were evaluated, and their association with the presence of ETW (indicated by a Highest BEWE score of 2-3) was examined using preliminary analyses and logistic regression models. The study sample included 454 adolescents (mean age: 13.5±1.1 years; female: 61.7%), and the prevalence of ETW was 71.6%. The majority of participants exhibited a Highest BEWE score of 3 (58.0%) and a Total BEWE score ≤8 (84.3%). The preliminary analysis showed an association between the presence of ETW and age, caries, and brushing teeth before eating (p-value < 0.05). Risk factors for ETW included always brushing teeth before eating [adjusted Prevalence Ratio (PRa) 1.31, p-value=0.014], presence of extensive carious lesions (PRa 1.23, p-value = 0.024), male gender (PRa 1.14, p-value = 0.028), and age > 14 years (PRa 1.17, p-value = 0.009). Although ETW was highly prevalent, most Colombian adolescents exhibited low Total BEWE scores. ETW was associated with frequent fruit intake, age, toothbrushing habits, caries lesions, and sex.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of fluoride varnishes containing micrometric or nanosized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) on dentin erosive wear in vitro. Bovine root dentin blocks were selected by surface hardness and randomly divided into five experimental groups/varnishes (n = 20/group): placebo, 5% sodium fluoride (NaF); 5% NaF+5% micrometric TMP; 5% NaF+2.5% nanosized TMP; and 5% NaF+5% nanosized TMP. Half of the surface of all blocks received a single application of the assigned varnish, with subsequent immersion in artificial saliva for 6 h. Varnishes were then removed and the blocks were immersed in citric acid (90 s, 4×/day, 5 days). After each erosive cycle, ten blocks of each group were immersed in a placebo dentifrice for 15 s (ERO), while the other ten blocks were subjected to abrasion by brushing (ERO+ABR). Dentin erosive wear was assessed by profilometry. Data were submitted to 2-way ANOVA and to the Holm-Sidak test (p<0.05). Dentin erosive wear was significantly higher for ERO+ABR than for ERO for all varnishes. TMP-containing varnishes promoted superior effects against dentin erosive wear compared with 5% NaF alone; and 5% nanosized TMP led to the lowest wear among all varnishes. In conclusion, the addition of TMP to conventional fluoride varnish (i.e., varnish containing only NaF) enhanced its protective effects against bovine root dentin erosion and erosion+abrasion. Additionally, the use of 5% nanosized TMP led to superior effects in comparison to 5% micrometric TMP, both for erosion and erosion+abrasion in vitro.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to assess the effect of proanthocyanidin, palm oil and vitamin E against erosive and erosive+abrasive challenges in vitro after enamel pellicle formation in situ. Methodology Bovine enamel blocks (n=84) were obtained and divided into the following treatment groups: negative control (NC) - deionized water; positive control (PC) - SnCl2/NaF/AmF-containing solution; palm oil (PO); 2% proanthocyanidin (P2); vitamin E (VitE); 2% proanthocyanidin+palm oil (P2PO); and 2% proanthocyanidin+vitamin E (P2VitE). For 5 days, one half of the sample from each group was subjected to erosion and the other half was subjected to erosion+abrasion. The acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) was pre-formed in situ for 30 minutes. The specimens were then treated in vitro with solutions (500 µl, 30s for each group). Subsequently, the blocks were left in the oral cavity for another hour to obtain the modified AEP. The blocks were immersed in 0.5% citric acid (pH=2.5) for 90s, 4×/day. AEP formation and treatment were carried out before the first and third erosive challenges, and after these challenges, abrasive cycles (15s) were performed on half of the samples. Enamel wear was quantified by profilometry and data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p<0.05). Results All groups showed higher wear when exposed to erosion+abrasion than when exposed to erosion alone (p=0.0001). PO, P2VitE, P2, and P2PO showed enamel wear similar to the PC group, but only PC, PO and P2VitE differed from the NC group. The other groups behaved similarly to NC. Conclusion It was concluded that the combination of proanthocyanidin and vitamin E was effective in reducing wear in the face of in vitro erosive and erosive+abrasive challenges.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative complications of hysteroscopy, such as the creation of a false passage, cervix dilatation failure, and uterine perforation, may require suspension of the procedure. Some patients refuse a new procedure, which delays the diagnosis of a possible serious uterine pathology. For this reason, it is essential to develop strategies to increase the success rate of hysteroscopy. Some authors suggest preoperative use of topical estrogen for postmenopausal patients. This strategy is common in clinical practice, but studies demonstrating its effectiveness are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cervical preparation with promestriene on the incidence of complications in postmenopausal women undergoing surgical hysteroscopy. METHODS: This is a double-blind clinical trial involving 37 postmenopausal patients undergoing surgical hysteroscopy. Participants used promestriene or placebo vaginally daily for 2 weeks and then twice a week for another 2 weeks until surgery. RESULTS: There were 2 out of 14 (14.3%) participants with complications in the promestriene group and 4 out of 23 (17.4%) participants in the placebo group (p=0.593). The complications were difficult cervical dilation, cervical laceration, and vaginal laceration. CONCLUSION: Cervical preparation with promestriene did not reduce intraoperative complications in postmenopausal patients undergoing surgical hysteroscopy.

Aim: To evaluate the protection offered by commercial mouthwashes containing sodium fluoride or stannous chloride associated with sodium fluoride to enamel and dentin, prior to erosive and abrasive cycling. Materials and Methods: Enamel and dentin samples were obtained from bovine incisors and subdivided into 3 groups (n=10), according to the fluoridated ingredient tested: FS (sodium fluoride - NaF (225 ppm)); FE (tin fluoride - NaF + SnCl2 (800 ppm Sn2+)); control (distilled water). The samples were submitted to an erosive/abrasive cycle with immersion in citric acid (lemon soda for 5 min, 4×/day, 5 days, with remineralization intervals in artificial saliva for 60 min). Abrasion was carried out with an electric brush (200 g/force) after the first and last cycles, 2x/day, and immediately afterward immersed in the tested solutions. Structure loss was obtained by optical profilometry. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and multiple comparison for each substrate separately. Results: For enamel there was a difference between the groups (p = 0.027), with the FS showing less loss of structure compared to the control 2.02 (±0.48). The FE group showed similar loss to the control and FS 2.32 (±0.58)ab. For dentin there was a difference between the groups (p = 0.011), with FE showing less loss of structure compared to the other groups, 0.82 (25% - 0.34; 75% - 0.95). Discussion: The protection of fluorides in erosive/abrasive challenges depends on the type and dental substrate. Conclusion: Mouthwash with sodium fluoride prior to erosive/abrasive challenges caused less loss of enamel surface, while for dentin, sodium fluoride associated with stannous chloride caused less loss of structure.


Objetivo: Avaliar a proteção oferecida por soluções para bochecho de fluoreto de sódio ou cloreto de estanho associado ao fluoreto de sódio ao esmalte e à dentina, previamente à ciclagem erosiva e abrasiva. Materiais e Métodos: Amostras de esmalte e dentina foram obtidas a partir de incisivos bovinos e subdivididas em 3 grupos (n=10), de acordo com o princípio ativo fluoretado testado: FS (fluoreto de sódio - NaF (225 ppm)); FE (fluoreto de estanho - NaF + SnCl2 (800 ppm Sn2+)); controle (água destilada). As amostras foram submetidas a um ciclo erosivo/abrasivo com imersão em ácido cítrico (refrigerante de limão por 5 min, 4×/dia, 5 dias, com intervalos de remineralização em saliva artificial por 60 min). A abrasão foi realizada com escova elétrica (200 g/força) após o primeiro e o último ciclos, 2×/dia, e logo em seguida imersos nas soluções testadas. A perda de estrutura foi obtida por perfilometria óptica. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e comparação múltipla para cada substrato separadamente. Resultados: Para esmalte houve diferença entre os grupos (p = 0,027), tendo o FS apresentados menor perda de estrutura comparado ao controle 2,02 (±0,48). O grupo FE apresentou perda similar ao controle e ao FS 2,32 (±0,58)ab. Para dentina houve diferença entre os grupos (p = 0,011), sendo que o FE apresentou menor perda de estrutura comparado aos demais grupos 0,82 (25% - 0,34; 75% - 0,95). Discussão: A proteção dos fluoretos em desafios erosivos/abrasivos depende do tipo e do substrato dental. Conclusão: O bochecho com fluoreto de sódio previamente aos desafios erosivos/abrasivos apresentou menor perda de superfície em esmalte, enquanto para dentina o fluoreto de sódio associado ao cloreto de estanho apresentou menor perda de estrutura.

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre la erosión dental y el consumo de bebidas refrescantes en escolares de 12 a 16 años del Centro Educativo Juan Velasco Alvarado, en el distrito de Pillco Marca, Perú. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacio- nal, transversal de una muestra de 135 niños de 12 a 16 años. Se seleccionaron historias clínicas que contaran con datos so- bre variables demográficas, la valoración del tipo de erosión dental según la clasificación de Eccles y que hayan respondi- do la encuesta sobre el consumo de las bebidas refrescantes (gaseosas, rehidratantes y jugos). Para evaluar la asociación entre las variables se aplicó la prueba chi-cuadrado; el nivel de significación establecido fue de p<0,05. Resultados: La frecuencia de la erosión dental en los es- colares fue del 54,1%. Un 3,7% consumía bebidas refrescan- tes de 3 a 5 veces por semana, un 45,9% consumía 2 veces por semana, y el 50,4% no consumía o consumía menos de 2 ve- ces a la semana. Las gaseosas que más frecuentemente se con- sumían fueron la Coca-Cola (20,7%) y la Kola Real (20%). El 43,7% no ingería ningún tipo de bebida gaseosa. Se halló una asociación entre la erosión dental y la ingesta de bebidas refrescantes (chi-cuadrado 84,77, p<0,05), con una ingesta de 2 veces por semana o más (chi-cuadrado 62,589, p<0,05). La erosión dental fue más frecuente en aquellos alumnos que in- gerían ambas bebidas, gaseosas y rehidratantes en su dieta, comparado con solo gaseosas o rehidratantes (p=0,048). Conclusiones: Las bebidas refrescantes resultaron ser no- civas para la erosión dental, cuando estas bebidas se toman al menos dos veces por semana (AU)


Aim: Determine the relation between dental erosion and the consumption of the refreshing drinks in schoolchildren from 12 to 16 years of Juan Velasco Alvarado Educational Center, from Pillco Marca district, Peru. Materials and methods: An observational, cross-sec- tional study was carried out on a sample of 135 children from 12 to 16 years of age. From all the medical records avail- able, the final selection included the ones that had data on demographic variables, the assessment of the type of dental erosion according to the Eccles classification and that had answered the survey on the consumption of refreshing drinks (soft drinks, rehydrating drinks and juices). To evaluate the association between the variables, the chi-square test was ap- plied; the established significance level was p<0.05. Results: The frequency of dental erosion in schoolchil- dren was 54.1%. 3.7% consumed refreshing drinks 3 to 5 times a week, 45.9% consumed 2 times a week, and 50.4% did not consume or consumed less than 2 times a week. The soft drinks most frequently consumed were Coca-Cola (20.7%) and Kola Real (20%). 43.7% did not ingest any type of soft drink. An association was found between dental erosion and the intake of refreshing drinks (chi-square 84.77, p<0.05), with an intake of at least twice a week (chi-square 62.589, p<0.05). Dental erosion was more frequent in those students who ingested both soft drinks and rehydrating drinks in their diet, compared to only soft drinks or only rehydrating drinks (p=0.048 Conclusions: Refreshing drinks turned out to be harmful in relation to dental erosion, when these drinks are taken at least twice a week (AU)

Pero los deportistas presentan un patrón de desgaste mayor y continuo debido al tipo de deporte que practican, las horas de entrenamiento, el consumo de bebidas con pH ácido, el cepillado dental vigoroso; todos estos factores pueden conducirlos a que desarrollen lesiones no cariosas (AU)


The natural wear of the teeth occurs depending on factors such as: quality of the dental structure, quality of the saliva, facial biotype that determines the bite force, according to these local oral factors, the teeth age. But in athletes they present a pattern of greater and continuous wear due to the type of sport they practice, the hours of training, the consumption of drinks with an acidic pH, vigorous tooth brushing; all these factors can lead them to develop non-carious lesions (AU)

Aims: Considering that Cranberry's components might inhibit dentin metalloproteinases exposed to erosive agents, the aim of this study was to evaluate in situeffect of a Cranberry gel application on dentin before an erosive challenge.Materials and methods: This crossover double-blinded study was performed in 2 phases of 5 days each, with 10 healthy volunteers who wore 2 palatal devices (1 for each phase) with 4 dentin specimens (2 specimens for each group). The groups under study were:First Phase: G1 -Erosivechallenge (Coca-cola®) over dentin without any previous treatment (1st negative control group); G2 -Erosive challenge over dentin previously treated with Cranberry gel (test group); and Second Phase: G3 -Erosive challenge over dentin previously treated with a gel without any active principle (2ndnegative control group); G4 -Erosive challenge over dentin previously treated with 0.12% Chlorhexidine gel (positive control group). Each device was immersed into the acid beverage, 3 times daily for 5 minutes during 5 days. Profilometry (µm) was used to quantify the dentin wear. Data were analyzed by Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance followed by Fisher's test (p<0.05).Results: Data (G1: 4.98 ± 1.36a; G2: 3.29 ± 1.16b; G3: 4.38 ± 1.19a; G4: 3.32 ± 1.55b) showed no statistical difference between G1 and G3. There was also no difference between G2 and G4. However, G2 and G4 presented lower wear when compared to G1 and G3, and this difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this studysuggest a significant efficacy of Cranberry gel in preventing wear of dentin subjected to dental erosion.

Abstract Gels containing juca seed galactomannan (JSG) were evaluated for their potential to prevent the progression of dentin erosive wear in an in vitro study with four experimental groups (n = 9). The treatments included distilled water (DW), 0.05% stannous fluoride (121 ppm F), and 0.5% or 1% JSG. The specimens underwent a cycle (3 times/day) consisting of immersion in 1% citric acid (5 minutes), treatment (5 minutes), and artificial saliva exposure (2 hours/overnight) for 5 days. Surface changes were assessed using mechanical profilometry (wear), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-test (p < 0.05). The negative control group exhibited the highest wear (6.0 µm ± 3.5), significantly differing from the group treated with 0.05% stannous fluoride gel (p = 0.007), which showed less dentin loss. The groups treated with 0.5% and 1% JSG showed results similar to the negative control (p = 0.661; p = 0.212, respectively) and the stannous fluoride group (p = 0.103; p = 0.379, respectively). In the SEM images, the specimen treated with stannous fluoride showed obliterated tubules, while the JSG gels formed crystals on the dentin surface, as confirmed by the presence of oxygen and calcium in the EDS analysis. Although the JSG gels showed similar results to the stannous fluoride, did not exhibit superior efficacy at the tested concentrations.


Resumo Géis contendo galactomanana da semente de jucá (GSJ) foram avaliados quanto ao seu potencial na prevenção da progressão do desgaste erosivo dentinário em um estudo in vitro com quatro grupos experimentais (n = 9). Os tratamentos incluíram água destilada (AD), 0,05% de fluoreto de estanho (121 ppm F) e 0,5% ou 1% de GSJ. Os espécimes passaram por um ciclo (3 vezes ao dia) que consistia em imersão em ácido cítrico 1% (5 minutos), tratamento (5 minutos) e exposição a saliva artificial (2 horas/durante a noite) por 5 dias. As alterações de superfície foram avaliadas utilizando perfilometria mecânica (desgaste), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e espectroscopia de raios-X por dispersão de energia (EDS). Os dados foram analisados por ANOVA, seguida do pós-teste de Tukey (p < 0,05). O grupo controle negativo apresentou o maior desgaste (6,0 µm ± 3,5), diferindo significativamente do grupo tratado com gel de fluoreto de estanho a 0,05% (p = 0,007), que apresentou menor perda de dentina. Os grupos tratados com 0,5% e 1% de GSJ apresentaram resultados semelhantes ao grupo controle negativo (p = 0,661; p = 0,212, respectivamente) e ao grupo de fluoreto de estanho (p = 0,103; p = 0,379, respectivamente). Nas imagens de MEV, o espécime tratado com fluoreto de estanho mostrou túbulos obliterados, enquanto os géis GSJ formaram cristais na superfície da dentina, como confirmado pela presença de oxigênio e cálcio na análise de EDS. Embora os géis GSJ tenham apresentado resultados semelhantes ao fluoreto de estanho, eles não demonstraram eficácia superior nas concentrações testadas.

Objetivo: o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar, in vitro, o potencial erosivo para o esmalte dentário de bebidas ácidas, comumente ingeridas pela população e encontradas com frequência no comércio da grande Florianópolis, SC, Brasil. Método: a mensuração do potencial erosivo das bebidas foi realizada através da detecção do potencial hidrogeniônico (pH) e acidez titulável (AT). A amostra foi composta por refrigerantes à base de cola, Coca-Cola® e Pepsi®; isotônicos Gatorade®-morango e maracujá e Powerade®-mix de frutas; Chás industrializados Natural Tea®-limão e Chá Matte Leão®-natural; energéticos Red Bull® e Monster Energy®; sucos naturais de Laranja Pera e de Limão Taiti; água saborizada H2OH!®-sabor limão; e água mineral, para o grupo controle. O pH foi aferido com pHmetro digital (Sensoglass SP1800) e para a AT foi utilizado o método padronizado pelo Instituto Adolfo Lutz, todos os ensaios foram realizados em triplicata. Para a análise estatística descritiva, foram empregados teste t e a ANOVA. Resultados: os menores valores de pH foram encontrados para a bebida Coca-Cola® e suco de limão com 2,3. Para AT, as amostras que apresentaram os maiores valores foram os sucos naturais, com 35,1 para o suco de limão e 13,5 para o suco de laranja. Todas as bebidas analisadas possuem potencial erosivo ao esmalte dental, por apresentarem valores de pH menores que 5,5. Quanto as mensurações de AT, os sucos naturais apresentaram os maiores valores. Conclusão: todas as bebidas do estudo foram consideradas iminentemente erosivas à estrutura dental.(AU)

Objetivo: avaliar a eficácia preventiva e terapêutica do tetrafluoreto de titânio (TiF4) em ensaios clínicos randomizados (ECR) e não randomizados (N-ECR). Materiais e Métodos: estudos sobre a eficácia do tetrafluoreto de titânio em esmalte e dentina, testado em diferentes veículos e formulações, foram obtidos nas seguintes bases de dados: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS/BBO e EMBASE, sem limite de ano de publicação ou idioma. Resultados: seis estudos com abordagem preventiva e terapêutica do TiF4 sobre a superfície dentária foram incluídos. Destes, três ECR e três N-ECR. Por meio da tabulação e categorização dos artigos, notou-se que o TiF4 obteve efeito positivo na prevenção da cárie em três estudos; efeito nulo no tratamento de lesões cariosas em dois; e apenas um estudo apresentou efeito negativo no tratamento da erosão quando comparado aos outros compostos fluoretados. Conclusão: Embora haja estudos na literatura, com distintos delineamentos metodológicos comprovando a eficácia do TiF4, tanto na prevenção quanto no tratamento de lesões de cárie e erosivas, ainda é necessário que mais ensaios clínicos randomizados sejam realizados, com o intuito de validar a eficácia da utilização clínica deste composto fluoretado.


Objective: to analyze the preventive and therapeutic efficacy of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) in studies with a methodological design based on randomized clinical trials (RCT) and non-randomized (N-RCT). Materials and Methods: data on the behavior of titanium tetrafluoride in enamel and dentin, tested in several vehicles and formulations, were extracted in the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS/BBO and EMBASE, without limitation of publication year or language. Results: six studies were obtained with preventive and therapeutic approach of TiF4 on the dental surface. Three studies were RCT and three were N-RCT. Through tabulation and categorization of articles, it was noticed that TiF4 showed a positive effect in caries prevention in three studies; a null effect in caries treatment was observed in two; and only one study had a negative effect in erosion treatment when compared to the other fluoridated compounds. Conclusion: Although there are several studies in the literature, with different methodological designs, proving the efficacy of TiF4 both in prevention and in therapeutic treatments of caries and dental erosion, it is still necessary that more clinical controlled studies be conducted, in order to validate the clinical use efficacy of this fluoride compound.

Abstract This in vitro study evaluated the effect of an experimental varnish containing 20% nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) associated with 5% stannous chloride (SnCl2) against erosive-abrasive wear on bovine dentin. Samples of bovine cervical dentin were pre-eroded (0.3% citric acid, pH 2.6 for 10 minutes) and randomized into 4 groups (n=10): Control group - experimental varnish without active ingredient (CG); experimental varnish containing 20% nHAP (nHG); experimental varnish containing 5% SnCl2 (24.800 ppm Sn2+) (SnG); experimental varnish containing 20% nHAP associated with 5% SnCl2 (18.300 ppm Sn2+) (nHSnG). After applying the materials, the erosive-abrasive challenges were performed for five days. Erosive dentin loss and analysis of the pattern of dentinal obliteration were performed by 3D confocal laser microscopy. A one-way ANOVA/Bonferroni test was performed to analyze the data (α=0.05). The SnG and nHSnG experimental groups presented more effectiveness in preventing erosive wear when compared to the other groups (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the SnG and nHSnG groups (p = 0.731) in tooth structure dentin loss. Regarding the amount of open dentinal tubules, the highest amount of obstructed dentinal tubules was demonstrated in SnG and nHSnG (p < 0.05) when compared to the others. Between SnG and nHSnG there was no significant difference (p = 0.952) in the amount of closed dentinal tubules in the dentin. Experimental varnishes containing 5% SnCl2 associated or not with 20% nHAP showed to be a promising strategy in preventing erosive-abrasive wear of dentin. In addition, nHSnG was able to obliterate dentinal tubules.


Resumo Este estudo in vitro avaliou o efeito de um verniz experimental contendo 20% de nano-hidroxiapatita (nHAP) associado a 5% de cloreto estanoso (SnCl2) contra o desgaste erosivo-abrasivo da dentina bovina. As amostras de dentina cervical bovina foram pré-erodificadas (0,3% de ácido cítrico, pH 2,6 durante 10 minutos) e aleatorizadas em 4 grupos (n=10): Grupo controle - verniz experimental sem ingrediente ativo (GC); verniz experimental contendo 20% nHAP (GnH); verniz experimental contendo 5% SnCl2 (24.800 ppm Sn2+) (GSn); verniz experimental contendo 20% nHAP associado a 5% SnCl2 (18.300 ppm Sn2+) (GnHSn). Após a aplicação dos materiais, os desafios erosivo-abrasivos foram realizados durante cinco dias. Perda de dentina erosiva e análise do padrão de obliteração dentinária foram realizadas por microscopia laser confocal 3D. Foi realizado o teste ANOVA/Bonferroni unidireccional para analisar os dados (α=0,05). Os grupos experimentais GSn e GnHSn apresentaram maior eficácia na prevenção do desgaste erosivo quando comparados com os outros grupos (p<0,05). Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos GSn e GnHSn (p = 0,731) na perda de dentina da estrutura dentária. Relativamente à quantidade de túbulos dentinários abertos, a maior quantidade de túbulos dentinários obstruídos foi demonstrada em GSn e GnHSn (p < 0,05) quando comparada com os outros grupos. Entre GSn e GnHSn, não houve diferença significativa (p = 0,952) na quantidade de túbulos dentinários fechados na dentina. Os vernizes experimentais contendo 5% de SnCl2 associados ou não a 20% de nHAP mostraram ser uma estratégia promissora na prevenção do desgaste erosivo-abrasivo da dentina. Além disso, o GnHSn conseguiu obliterar os túbulos dentinários.

Dental erosion is characterized by progressively destroyed teeth, which has no relation to bacteria but to chemicals. Some internal factors, such as gastroesophageal reflux induced by bulimia, anorexia, gastrointestinal diseases, or drugs, and external factors, such as diet, drugs, and occupational acid exposure, are considered promotive factors for this disease. This article presents a patient suffering from severe dental erosion in the whole dentition, especially in the maxillary teeth, due to gastroesophageal reflux induced by glucocorticoid therapy for optic neuritis. This article discusses the mechanism between optic neuritis glucocorticoid therapy and dental erosion.

Objective:To explore the distribution characteristics of memory B cells and its relationship with bone erosion in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and to further understand the mechanism of B cells in the pathogenesis of RA.Methods:B cell subsets in peripheral blood of 200 RA patients and 50 healthy individuals were detected by flow cytometry. According to the surface markers CD19, CD27 and lgD, B cells were divided into CD19 +CD27 +lgD - switched memory B cells, CD19 +CD27 +lgD + non-switched memory B cells, CD19 +CD27 -lgD - double-negative memory B cells and CD19 +CD27 -lgD + naive B cells. B cells in RA patients with various disease activity score, course of disease and treatment were analyzed. Patients were divided into four groups according to the results of joint ultrasonography, including patients without bone erosion, patients with hand bone erosion, patients with knee bone erosion and patients with hand and knee bone erosion. The relationship between the distribution of B cell subsets, autoantibodies and RA bone erosion were analyzed. Differences between the groups were analyzed by independent-samples t test, Mann-Whitney U test and χ2 test. The analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis analysis were used for multi-group comparison, Spearman correlation analysis was also used for correlation analysis. Results:①RA patients showed significantly decreased non-switched memory B cells [(9.5±6.7)% vs (12.1±4.7)%, t=2.46, P=0.015] and increased double negative memory B cells [(3.8±2.5)% vs(2.7±1.3)%, t=-4.74, P<0.001] in comparison to healthy individuals. The percentage of non-switched memory B cells were decreased in RA patients with moderate disease activity [(8.4±4.7 )% vs (12.4±7.5)%, t=3.13, P=0.001] and high disease activity [(7.8±7.6)% vs (12.4±7.5)%, t=3.00, P=0.003] in comparison to those in RA patients who achieved remission. Meanwhile, the na?ve B cells [(70.3±15.0)% vs (63.9±14.6)%, t=-2.15, P=0.034] were increased in RA patients with moderate disease activity. No difference was found in RA patients with different disease courses. Total B cells [(4.8±2.9)% vs (7.2±4.1)%, t=-3.24, P=0.001], non-switched memory B cells (7.6±4.3)% vs (10.0±7.1)%, t=-2.63, P=0.010) in RA patients who received prednisone treatment were decreased, while double-negative memory B cells (4.9±3.0)% vs (3.6±2.3)%, t=-2.79, P=0.006] were increased compared with those in RA patients without prednisone treatment. Non-switched memory B cells was decreased in RA patients with hand and knee erosion compared with RA patients without erosion [6.8%(2.5%, 9.5%) vs 9.7%(5.5%, 17.5%), Z=-2.12, P=0.034]. Double negative memory B cells in subgroup with keen erosion [3.3%(2.7%, 5.0%) vs 2.6%(1.9%, 3.8%), Z=-2.09, P=0.036]as well as with hand and knee erosion [3.9%(2.3%, 5.6%) vs 2.6%(1.9%, 3.8%), Z=-2.41, P=0.016] were higher than those in patients without erosion. In addition, higher serum RF level was found in subgroup RA patients with hand and knee erosion compared with subgroup of RA patients without erosion [141.0 (38.0, 874.0) U/ml vs 53.5 (10.0, 106.0)U/ml, Z=-2.07, P=0.039]. Meanwhile, the positive rate of ACPA in RA patients with bone erosion of hand was significantly higher than that of RA patients without bone erosion [81%(52/64) vs 64%(38/59), χ2=4.44, P=0.043). Conclusions:The results suggest that the increase of double negative memory B cells, the decrease of non-switched memory B cells and higher level of autoantibodies may closely relate to bone erosion of RA, which may be one of the pathogenesis of disability in RA.
