RESUMEN

Culantro de monte (Eryngium foetidum L.) is a biennial herb of tropical origin very frequent in America, Africa and the Caribbean. With the arrival of Europeans in the fifteenth century, it managed to be distributed to various locations in Asia and Europe. The present study was carried out in the San Antonio de Padua community in the Province of Los Ríos - Ecuador to collect information, through interviews with the residents, regarding the nomenclature and uses of this aromatic herb. It was found that 52% of the interviewees mention a nutritional use, especially as a condiment for fish soup, buns and stews, while 26% say they use this plant for medicinal purposes in infusions to cure stomach and joint pain. The variety of metabolites that it possesses, such as eryngial (E-2-Dodecenal), extends its range of applications in modern medicine. We concluded that the transfer of ethnobotanical information still remains in the community, but the young generations are unaware of several of this plant's applications.


El culantro de monte (Eryngium foetidum L.) pertenece a la familia Apiaceae, es una hierba terrestre bienal de origen tropical muy frecuente en América, África y el Caribe, con la llegada de los europeos en el siglo XV, logró distribuirse a varias regiones de Asia y Europa. El presente estudio se realizó en la comunidad San Antonio de Padua en la provincia de Los Ríos ­ Ecuador, tuvo como objetivo recopilar información, mediante entrevistas escritas a los pobladores, referente a la nomenclatura y usos de esta hierba. Se encontró que un 52% de los entrevistados le da un uso culinario para preparar sopas de pescado, sancochos, bollos y estofados, mientras que un 26% dice utilizar esta planta con fines medicinales en infusiones para tratar en el ser humano dolores estomacales y dolores de las articulaciones. La variedad de metabolitos que posee, como el eryngial (E-2-Dodecenal), amplía su rango de aplicaciones en la medicina moderna. Se concluye que el flujo de información etnobotánica se mantiene en la comunidad, pero las nuevas generaciones desconocen las varias aplicaciones que tiene esta especie.

Eyngium foetidum L. is a medicinal plant widely used by ethnic tribal communities of Assam as an alternative source of medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The present investigation was undertaken with an aim to isolate, identify and assess the antimicrobial activity of endophytic fungi associated with the healthy leaf tissues of E. foetidum. The endophytic fungi were isolated three different media, namely, Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), Malt Extract Agar (MEA) and Water Agar (WA) media and from three different sites. Altogether, 84 endophytic fungal isolates were isolated from 150 segments of leaf tissues. Dominant endophytes were found to be fungi belonging to the genus Colletotrichum, followed by non-sporulating members grouped under mycelia sterilia. Other fungal genera that were isolated as endophytes were Scopulariopsis, Cladosporium, Stemphylium, Penicilllium and Alternaria. The endophytic fungi thus isolated were studied for antimicrobial activity against some clinically significant human pathogenic test organisms. Ethyl acetate extracts of all endophytes exhibited antimicrobial activity by inhibiting at least one out of all the test pathogens. Amongst the isolated fungi, extracts obtained from three endophytes showed wide-spectrum activity against all the test organisms. The fungal endophytes were identified as Scopulariopsis sp., Penicillium sp. and a sterile isolate morphotype strain EF6. The study indicated that E. foetidum harbours a wide range of endophytes with antimicrobial properties and further detailed investigation of the compound present in them would lead to their potential therapeutic applications as a new source of medicine.

Introducción: el culantro (Eryngium foetidum L., Apiaceae) es una hierba nativa de América tropical y las Antillas. Es usada en diferentes recetas de comida típicas del Caribe, Latinoamérica y el lejano oriente. Estudios indican que esta planta es rica en calcio, hierro, caroteno, y riboflavina; sus hojas son utilizadas como saborizantes y condimentos de algunos alimentos. Su aplicación medicinal incluye su uso como té para la gripe, diabetes, el estreñimiento y la fiebre. Se usa comúnmente en salsas como estimulante del apetito. Especies de E. foetidum de varios países han mostrado una composición variable de su aceite esencial, sobre todo, en sus hojas. Objetivo: establecer la composición química volátil del aceite esencial obtenido de hojas y tallos frescos de E. foetidum y evaluar su actividad antioxidante. Métodos: el aceite esencial fue aislado usando la técnica de hidrodestilación. La composición química volátil se determinó mediante cromatografía de gases acoplada a detectores de ionización en llama (GC-FID) y espectrometría de masas (GC-MS). La actividad antioxidante fue determinada mediante el ensayo de decoloración del radical DPPH. (2,2-difenil-1-picril hidracilo). Resultados: el aceite esencial de las hojas de E. foetidum presentó un alto porcentaje de aldehídos alifáticos (E-2-dodecenal, 5-dodeceno, tetradecanal, tetradecenal) y aromáticos (2,4,6-trimetilbenzaldehído, 3,4,5-trimetilfenol). La actividad antioxidante se expresó como porcentaje de inhibición del radical DPPH. (89,39 por ciento). Conclusiones: en el aceite esencial de E. foetidum colombiano predominaron compuestos aldehídos alifáticos y aromáticos. El resultado del ensayo de DPPH. mostró que el aceite esencial posee una capacidad antioxidante alta, esto lo hace una fuente importante de antioxidantes naturales.


Introduction: culantro (Eryngium foetidum L., Apiaceae) is a herb native to Tropical America and the West Indies. Although widely used in dishes throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Far East. The herb is reportedly rich in calcium, iron, carotene, and riboflavin and its harvested leaves are widely used as a food flavoring and seasoning herb for meat and many other foods. Their medicinal values include its use as a tea for flu, diabetes, constipation, and fevers. One of its most popular uses is in chutneys as an appetite stimulant. Species of E. foetidum from several countries have shown a variable composition of its essential oil, particularly, in their leaves. Objective: to establish the volatile chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from fresh leaves and stems of E. foetidum and to evaluate its antioxidant activity. Methods: the essential oil was isolated by hydrodistillation. The volatile chemical composition was analyzed by Gas Chromatography coupled to flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The antioxidant activity was determined using the test radical DPPH decoloration. (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hidrazyl). Results: the essential oil from E. foetidum showed a high percentage of aliphatic aldehydes (E-2-dodecenal, 5-dodecene, tetradecanal, tetradecenal) and aromatic (2,3,5-trimethylbenzaldehyde, trimethylphenol). The antioxidant activity was expressed as percentage inhibition of DPPH. radical (89.39 percent). Conclusions: in the essential oil from Colombian E. foetidum predominant aliphatic aldehydes and aromatic compounds. The DPPH test showed that AE has antioxidant capacity, this makes it an important source of natural antioxidants.

RESUMEN

Pleuritis rat model was adopted to observe the influence of Eryngium foetidun L . on in- flammatory cell factors (TNF-a, IL- 6 and NO) . The results showed that Eryngium foetidum L. can decrease the contents of TNF-a , IL- 6 and NO in serum. It is indicated that the anti- inflam- matory effect of Eryngium foetidum L. is probably related to the decrease of the contents of the above factors.
