RESUMEN

To evaluate the therapeutic effect of using micro-implant anchorage (MIA) to rotate the functional occlusal plane (FOP) counterclockwise. Forty skeletal class Ⅱ high-angle patients who had completed orthodontic treatment were enrolled, including 20 patients treated with MIA orthodontic system (MIA group) and the other 20 patients treated with traditional sliding straight wire appliance (control group). Cephalometric measurements on the lateral cranial radiographs before and after treatment were performed, all acquired data were statistically analyzed with SPSS 26.0. At the end of treatment, MIA group obtained better effect of FOP and mandibular plane counter-clockwise rotation than the control group. In the MIA group, the average change of FOP-frankfort horizontal plane (FH), FOP-SN and mandibular plane angle (MP-FH) angle was -4.5(-7.3, -3.7)°, (3.3)° and -1.7(-3.0, -0.9)°, respectively. In the control group, the average change of FOP-FH, FOP-SN and MP-FH angle was -0.1(-4.1, 3.0)°, (-0.1±5.1)° and -0.4(-2.4, 0.7)°, respectively. There was significant difference between the change of the two groups (all <0.05). Compared with the traditional sliding straight wire appliance, counterclockwise rotation of FOP can be more effectively reversed by using MIA orthodontic system, and the MP-FH can be reduced as well.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the occlusal plane angle and craniofacial skeletal pattern in relation to anterior overbite. METHODS: Lateral cephalograms of 90 adults with skeletal class III malocclusions were traced and measured to analyze skeletal factors and occlusal plane angles. In terms of anterior overbite, all patients were classified into 3 subgroups of positive overbite, edgebite, and negative overbite groups. All measurements were evaluated statistically by ANOVA and Duncan's Post Hoc, and correlation coefficients were evaluated among measurements. RESULTS: In this study, some skeletal measurements (saddle angle, articular angle, Y axis, AFH, SN-FH, SN-Mn, FH-Mn) showed a significant difference among the 3 groups in relation to overbite changes. Correlation coefficient showed that PFH/AFH, SN-Mn, Mx-Mn, and FH-Mn showed a significant difference with FH-Occ, Mx-Occ, and Mn-Occ. Regression analysis showed that Mx-Mn had a determination coefficient of 0.714, 0.560, and 0.677 in relation to FH-Occ, Mx-Occ, and Mn-Occ, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that consideration of the occlusal plane in relation to the maxillomandibular vertical skeletal state enable the establishment of a more predictable orthognathic surgery result.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to find changes in the occlusal plane related to different vertical facial patterns and suggest treatment goals and conduct possible treatment mechanisms. METHODS: 60 adult patients (28 males, 32 females) who had been diagnosed as Class I skeletal malocclusion and treated without extraction were selected. Patients were divided into three groups; short face type (group 1), average face type (group 2) and long face type (group 3), using the data on normal occlusion of Korean adults. RESULTS: The results were achieved by analyzing cephalometric tracings of each group at pre-treatment, end-treatment and post-treatment (about 1 year recall check). The inclination of the occlusion plane tends to gradually increase as the face becomes longer. In group 1, COP-X, FOP-X, L6/L1, MP-L6 were significantly decreased, and L1-FOP was significantly increased during the retention period (T3-T2). Group 2 showed no significant change. In group 3, FOP-X was significantly increased during the retention period (T3-T2). During the retention period, FOP-X showed significant change among each group, especially between group 1 and group 3. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that changes of occlusal plane inclination according to facial vertical pattern need to be considered during the retention period for intrusion, extrusion, and incisor overbite.
