RESUMEN

Objective: The objective of the present work was to formulate and evaluate a stable, odour free garlic powder loaded floating matrix tablet for the treatment of peptic ulcers. Methods: A gastro-retentive floating matrix tablet (FMT) formulation of garlic powder (GP) was prepared using various concentrations of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose K4M (HPMC K4 M) and effervescent system (sodium bicarbonate and citric acid in 1:1 % w/w) to achieve desirable floating time (FT), floating lag time (FLT) and drug release. Wet granulation method was selected using ethanol as a binder for preparation of tablet. 32 full factorial designs were used for selection of suitable polymer concentration and effervescent system. Nonenteric film coating was applied to mask GP odour. Results: It was observed that FMT with optimum quantities of HPMC K4M and the effervescent system showed 97 % of drug release in 12 h with FT up to 10 h and minimum FLT of 3 min. There was no significant change in FLT, FT and drug content during the stability study of FMT. Conclusion: A stable, sustained release FMT of GP tablets using HPMC K4M and an effervescent system was successfully prepared. This formulation can overcome problems of taste and odour masking, gastric irritation, and loss of active constituents present in garlic.

RESUMEN

Aims: Use of natural feed additives to improve the milk production of buffalos. Place and Duration of Study: National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India between May 2011 and July 2012. Methodology: Garlic Powder (GRP) at 2, 4, and 6% of DMI was incubated for 24h in diluted ruminal fluid with a 50:50 roughage: concentrate wheat straw based diet. GRP at 2 and 6% DMI have resulted in decrease of molar proportion of acetate and butyrate but it has not effected on in vitro true dry matter digestibility and propionate production. Results: Methane emission was significantly (P<0.05) decreased in presence of GRP. Further, GRP (at the rate 2% of DMI) was evaluated under in vivo conditions in Ten lactating Murrah buffaloes divided into two groups i.e. Control and Treatment group , and it shown very promising results on methane reduction. Methane was reduced up to 31% in case of GRP, without affecting digestibility of nutrients and milk composition in comparison to control group. Conclusion: Overall milk production was remained similar in all groups but just after supplementation of GRP, and up to 12 weeks of supplementation, it remained significantly higher in treatment group as compared to control group.

RESUMEN

Objective To establish a method for determination of allicin(diallyl trisulfide) in the ultrafine garlic powder by gas chromatography(GC) . Methods Allicin injection was extracted by supersonic wave with a mixed solvent hexane-anhydrous ethanol(1:4) in GC by capillary column and detected by hydrogen flame ionization detector(FID) ,using nitrogen as the carrier gas. Results The peak areas were proportional to the allicin concentrations and the standard curve showed good linearity,y=190 282.5x-11 734.5(r=0.999 3) within the range of 0.30~3.00 mg/ml,the average recovery was 84.6%-98.6 % with RSD of 1.85%~3.27%. Conclusion The method is simple, accurate with good repeatability, and it is applicable to the determination of allicin in the ultrafine garlic powder.
