@#Objective To isolate and identify Lactobacillus paracasei and Bacillus subtilis from feces of northern white geese.Methods Lactobacillus paracasei and Bacillus subtilis,numbered S00834-8 and IS00439-2 respectively,were isolated from feces of 30 52-week-old northern white geese and cultured in specific medium,and identified by 16S DNA sequencing. The two strains were cultured for different time duration(0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,36 and 48 h),at different temperature(34,36,37,38 and 40 ℃)and pH(5. 5,6. 0,6. 5,7. 0,7. 5 and 8. 0). The growth characteristics of the strains were evaluated according to the A600values measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. At the same time,the acid and bile salt tolerance(pH 2. 0,2. 5,3. 0,3. 5 and 7. 0,bile salt concentration 0,0. 3%,0. 5%,1. 0% and 1. 5%)and the antibiotic tolerance were tested. Results The strains S00834-8 and IS00439-2 were Lactobacillus paracasei subspecies tolerance H and Bacillus subtilis KA9,respectively. The strain S00834-8 cultured under the optimum condition of the culture medium with pH 6. 0,at 37 ℃,for 12 h,had good bile resistance and gastric acid resistance,which was moderately susceptible to piperacillin,norfloxacin,amikacin,gentamicin and tetracycline,and susceptible to levofloxacin,streptomycin and chloramphenicol. The strain IS00439-2 best cultured in the culture medium with pH 7. 5,at 36 ℃,for 8 h,showed good bile resistance and gastric acid resistance,which was moderately sensitive to levofloxacin and tetracycline,while sensitive to piperacillin,norfloxacin,streptomycin and chloramphenicol. Conclusion Goose-derived Lactobacillus paracasei subspecies tolerance H and Bacillus subtilis KA9 have good acid resistance and bile salt resistance,which are expected to be candidate strains for goose-derived microecological preparations.

SUMMARY: The geese's tongue filiform papillae are particularly long, and exhibit the same morphology of a tooth, evoking the lingual teeth of several fishes. In adult animals, they contain numerous mechanical Herbst's corpuscles but no taste buds. In the embryo, they appear since stage 38 and acquire their definitive shape between stages 38 and 42. They express several proteins associated with mammalian tooth development (BMP4, β-catenin, SHH, PITX2, PAX9), also known to be linked to parrot's pseudoteeth and goose's denticulations development. Neurofilaments are early present in the papillae primordia, and appear particularly numerous in adult papillae. Our results suggest that these papillae constitute a mechanical organ with a « tooth shape » derived from ancestral odontodes, whose development is controlled by numerous genes involved in classical odontogenesis.
Las papilas filiformes de la lengua de los gansos son particularmente largas y exhiben la morfología de un diente, evocando los dientes linguales presentes en varios peces. En los animales adultos, contienen numerosos corpúsculos de Herbst mecánicos, aunque una ausencia de papilas gustativas. En el embrión, aparecen a partir del estadio 38 y adquieren su forma definitiva entre los estadios 38 y 42. Expresan varias proteínas asociadas al desarrollo dentario de los mamíferos (BMP4, β-catenina, SHH, PITX2, PAX9), también conocidas por estar asociadas al desarrollo de pseudodientes en el loro y denticulaciones en el ganso. Los neurofilamentos están presentes tempranamente en los primordios de las papilas y aparecen particularmente numerosos en las papilas adultas. Nuestros resultados sugieren que estas papilas constituyen un órgano mecánico con «forma de diente» derivado de odontoides ancestrales, cuyo desarrollo está controlado por numerosos genes implicados en la odontogénesis clásica.

Goose parvovirus (GPV), also called Derzsy's disease, is a viral pathogen that causes high morbidity and mortality in goslings and ducklings. In this study, we perform the molecular characterization of the GPV in Turkey. The definition of similarity to the world of GPV isolates in Turkey and construction of a phylogenetic tree was aimed. For this purpose, the presence of GPV in the liver, spleen, and intestine tissues of nine goslings with symptoms such as dysphagia, bilateral ocular swelling, eye discharge, diarrhea, and fatigue were investigated by real-time PCR method and all samples were detected as positive. According to the data obtained by molecular characterization, phylogenetic analysis of GPV has been presented in Turkey. As a result of this study, it was determined that the GPVs available in Turkey are virulent strains.(AU)

Abstract: The Orinoco Goose (Neochen jubata) is a few-known and endemic Anatidae to South America, inhabiting sandy beaches along medium and large rivers, with a well-developed riparian forest and in swamp savannas and large freshwater baths. Recent data indicate the presence of longitudinal migratory behavior, and despite them, there are no records on the genetic profile of this species. The Araguaia River region, in the municipality of Luiz Alves, Goiás, receives an undetermined number of ducks seasonally, and there is little information about the individuals who visit this place, constituting the ideal scenario for a study able to offer a genetic overview perspective of this species and to understand the relationship between these individuals better. For this, we genetically characterized 61 individuals sampled in three distinct years of collection using microsatellite molecular markers and mitochondrial DNA. Genetic diversity analyses revealed low levels of heterozygosity for all sampled groups. However, they are within the equilibrium proposed by Hardy-Weinberg (HWE), as inbreeding or drift are not acting in these groups. The parentage analysis supports it, showing a high number of unrelated individuals over the years. AMOVA showed a significant difference among groups. These results may reflect the structure of this migratory species in that region, with the paired differentiation test of individuals from 2013 and 2014 being more similar to each other than those from other years, indicating a possible genetic structure diagnosed by the years of capture. However, there is a high allelic sharing among the three sampled groups, suggesting that these individuals are a population that connects over time and that they have a philopatric relationship with the location. The results found in this study constitute an initial milestone for the genetic knowledge of the mallard duck that should be raised in many other genetic studies.
Resumo: O ganso-do-orinoco (Neochen jubata) é um anatídeo endêmico da América do Sul, cujo habitat são praias arenosas ao longo de rios médios e grandes, com uma vegetação ripária bem desenvolvida e em savanas do pântano com extensos banhados de água doce. Dados recentes indicam a presença de comportamento migratório longitudinal e, apesar destes, não existem registros sobre o perfil genético dessa espécie. A região do rio Araguaia, no município de Luiz Alves, Goiás, recebe um número indeterminado de patos sazonalmente e há poucas informações sobre os indivíduos que visitam este local, constituindo o cenário ideal para um estudo capaz de oferecer uma perspectiva genética geral dessa espécie e também de entender melhor a relação de parentesco entre esses indivíduos. Para tal, caracterizamos geneticamente 60 indivíduos amostrados em três anos distintos de coleta, utilizando marcadores moleculares microssatélites e DNA mitocondrial. As análises de diversidade genética revelaram baixos níveis de heterozigosidade para todos os grupos amostrados. No entanto, eles estão dentro do Equilíbrio proposto por Hardy-Weinberg (HWE), pois a consanguinidade ou a deriva não estão atuando nesses grupos, a análise de parentesco apoia este resultado indicando um alto número de indivíduos não relacionados ao longo dos anos. A AMOVA apresentou diferença significativa entre os grupos. Esses resultados podem refletir a estrutura dessa espécie migratória naquela região, com o teste de diferenciação pareada de indivíduos de 2013 e 2014 sendo mais semelhantes entre si do que os de outros anos, indicando uma possível estruturação genética diagnosticada pelos anos de captura. No entanto, há um alto compartilhamento alélico entre os três grupos amostrados sugerindo que esses indivíduos são uma população que se conecta ao longo do tempo e que têm uma relação filopátrica com o local. Os resultados aqui encontrados constituem um marco inicial para o conhecimento genético do ganso-do-orinoco que contribuirá para novos estudos sobre esta espécie considerada "quase ameaçada" pela IUCN.

Abstract Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are Apicomplexan intracellular protozoan parasites that affect numerous animal species, thus leading to severe diseases and economic losses, depending on the vertebrate species involved. The role of the avian species in maintaining and transmission of these coccidia has been studied for several years as they tend to serve as a potential source of infection for mammals and humans. The present study aimed to assess the serological exposure of Orinoco goose (Neochen jubata) to T. gondii and N. caninum. Between 2010 and 2013, 41 free-ranging Orinoco geese were captured in the Araguaia River, Brazil. The presence and titration of IgY antibodies to both coccidia were assayed via indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). While IgY antibodies for N. caninum were present in 5 animals, with titers of 20, the antibodies for T. gondii were found in 35 animals, with titers ranging from 20 to 640. Considering that the Orinoco goose's meat is consumed by the local population in the studied area, it may represent an important source of T. gondii infection for humans. Due to its migratory behavior, this goose may play a pivotal role in the natural dispersion of both parasites. Furthermore, molecular studies are required for genotyping the isolates of T. gondii that occurs in this avian species.
Resumo Toxoplasma gondii e Neospora caninum são parasitas protozoários intracelulares do philo Aplicomplexa que afetam uma vasta gama de espécies animais, causando sérias doenças e levando a perdas econômicas, dependendo da espécie envolvida. O papel das aves na manutenção e transmissão destes coccídios tem sido estudado por anos, já que eles são potenciais fontes de infecção para outros animais e humanos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a exposição do Ganso-do-Orinoco (Neochen jubata) a T. gondii e N. caninum por meio de técnicas sorológicas. Entre os anos de 2010 e 2013, 41 Gansos-do-Orinoco de vida livre foram capturados no Vale do Rio Araguaia, Brasil. A presença e titulação de anticorpos IgY para ambos os coccídios foi obtida utilizando-se a Reação de Imunofluorescência Indireta (RIFI). Enquanto a presença de anticorpos IgY para N. caninum foi detectada em 5 aves, com titulação 20, anticorpos para T. gondii foram encontrados em 35 aves, com títulos variando de 20 a 640. Considerando que a carne do Ganso-do-Orinoco é uma fonte de alimento para a população da área estudada, a ave pode representar uma importante fonte de infecção de T. gondii para humanos. Devido ao seu comportamento migratório, esta espécie assume grande importância na dispersão de ambos os parasitas. Estudos moleculares são necessários a fim de caracterizar genotipicamente os isolados de T. gondii que ocorrem nesta espécie de ave.

Objective: To screen the specific reverse primers of Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum,duck gizzard membrane and goose gizzard membrane,and establish a specific PCR for molecular identifying Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum and its common adulterants. Method: Based on the mutation sites on the 12S rRNA sequence,specific polymerase Chain reaction(PCR) identify primers were designed for chicken,duck and goose gizzard membrane. The specific PCR reaction conditions were optimized,and the PCR identification method was explored and verified in terms of tolerance and feasibility. Thirty batches of Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum decoction pieces extracted from the test were identified. Result: Thirty batches of Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum decoction pieces were detected using chicken-specific primers, 273 bp of specific bands was amplified and visualized on the agarose electrophoregram. When duck and goose primers were used,no corresponding amplified band was detected. Conclusion: The allele-specific PCR method can be used as a rapid and accurate method to identify Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum. It is a promise method for special sampling tasks of Chinese herbal medicine and decoction tablets nationwide.

Goose hemorrhagic polyomavirus (GHPV) is not a naturally occurring infection in geese in China; however, GHPV infection has been identified in Pekin ducks, a domestic duck species. Herein, we investigated the prevalence of GHPV in five domestic duck species (Liancheng white ducks, Putian black ducks, Shan Sheldrake, Shaoxing duck, and Jinyun Sheldrake) in China. We determined that the Jinyun Sheldrake duck species could be infected by GHPV with no clinical signs, whereas no infection was identified in the other four duck species. We sequenced the complete genome of the Jinyun Sheldrake origin GHPV. Genomic data comparison suggested that GHPVs share a conserved genomic structure, regardless of the host (duck or geese) or region (Asia or Europe). Jinyun Sheldrake origin GHPV genomic characterization and epidemiological studies will increase our understanding of potential heterologous reservoirs of GHPV.

Background: Ornithine decarboxylase antizyme 1 (OAZ1) is an important regulator of polyamine synthesis and uptake. Our previous studies indicated that high OAZ1 expression in the ovaries of laying geese is responsible for poor egg production. In the present study, the molecular characterization of goose OAZ1 gene was analyzed, as well as the expression profile in various follicular tissues. Results: An 873-bp cDNA sequence of the OAZ1 gene (Accession No. KC845302) with a +1 frameshift site (+175T) was obtained. The sequence consisted of a 652-bp two overlapping open reading frames (a putative protein with 216 amino acids). The OAZ domain, OAZ signature and OAZ super family domain were prominent conserved regions among species. As the follicle size increased, OAZ1 abundance showed an increasing trend during follicular development, while it decreased during follicular regression. The level of OAZ1 mRNA expression was the lowest in the fifth largest preovulatory follicle, and was 0.65-fold compared to the small white follicle (P b 0.05). OAZ1 mRNA expression in the largest preovulatory and postovulatory follicle was 2.11- and 2.49-fold compared to the small white follicle, respectively (P b 0.05). Conclusions: The goose OAZ1 structure confirms that OAZ1 plays an important role in ornithine decarboxylase-mediated regulation of polyamine homeostasis. Our findings provide an evidence for a potential function of OAZ1 in follicular development, ovulation and regression.

Goose parvovirus (GPV) continues to be a threat to goose farms and has significant economic effects on the production of geese. Current commercially available vaccines only rarely prevent GPV infection. In our study, Lactobacillus (L.) plantarum NC8 was selected as a vector to express the VP2 gene of GPV, and recombinant L. plantarum pSIP409-VP2/NC8 was successfully constructed. The molecular weight of the expressed recombinant protein was approximately 70 kDa. Mice were immunized with a 2 × 109 colony-forming unit/200 µL dose of the recombinant L. plantarum strain, and the ratios and numbers of CD11c⁺, CD3⁺CD4⁺, CD3⁺CD8⁺, and interferon gamma- and tumor necrosis factor alpha-expressing spleen lymphocytes in the pSIP409-VP2/NC8 group were higher than those in the control groups. In addition, we assessed the capacity of L. plantarum SIP409-VP2/NC8 to induce secretory IgA production. We conclude that administered pSIP409-VP2/NC8 leads to relatively extensive cellular responses. This study provides information on GPV infection and offers a clear framework of options available for GPV control strategies.

Chewing lice (Phthiraptera) that parasitize the globally threatened swan goose Anser cygnoides have been long recognized since the early 19th century, but those records were probably biased towards sampling of captive or domestic geese due to the small population size and limited distribution of its wild hosts. To better understand the lice species parasitizing swan geese that are endemic to East Asia, we collected chewing lice from 14 wild geese caught at 3 lakes in northeastern Mongolia. The lice were morphologically identified as 16 Trinoton anserinum (Fabricius, 1805), 11 Ornithobius domesticus Arnold, 2005, and 1 Anaticola anseris (Linnaeus, 1758). These species are known from other geese and swans, but all of them were new to the swan goose. This result also indicates no overlap in lice species between older records and our findings from wild birds. Thus, ectoparasites collected from domestic or captive animals may provide biased information on the occurrence, prevalence, host selection, and host-ectoparasite interactions from those on wild hosts.

Immunoglobulin (Ig) is considered a part of the innate immune system and cooperates with the complementary system as the first line of defense. In this study, a monoclonal antibody (MAb) direct against the light chain of goose Ig (GoIgCL) was generated, characterized and identified in various immunoassays to detect goose Ig. An immunoaffinity chromatography column prepared with this MAb was used to separate the goose Ig from sera. After being conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), this MAb was used as the secondary antibody to evaluate the goose-specific antibody. In addition, this MAb distinguished and localized the SIg+ lymphocytes from peripheral blood lymphocytes. MAb against GoIgCL may be good candidate to detect or purify goose Ig under various conditions and as a powerful tool for humoral immunity research on goose.

Background Prolactin (PRL) regulates development and reproduction, and its effects are mediated by the prolactin receptor (PRLR). In order to clarify the role of PRLR and PRL in the process of follicular development in the goose ovary, the level of PRLR mRNA expression in the ovary and follicles of the Sichuan white goose was determined, as well as the PRL concentration in ovarian follicles. Results The level of PRLR mRNA in the hierarchical follicles (HFs) initially increased, and subsequently decreased, whereas PRLR expression was initially low and later increased in postovulatory follicles (POFs). The level of PRLR mRNA expression was the highest in the F4 follicles, and lowest in the F1 follicles in all of the examined follicles. Compared with the level of PRLR mRNA expression in the small white follicles (SWFs), the level of PRLR mRNA was 2.86- and 1.44-fold higher in the F4 and small yellow follicles (SYFs), respectively (P < 0.05). The level of PRLR mRNA expression in the F4 follicles was highest (P < 0.05) in HFs. The highest PRL concentration in all of the examined samples was observed in SYFs and F1, with concentration of 6162 mLU/g and 6197 mLU/g, respectively. The PRL concentration in SYFs was significantly higher compared with SWFs (P < 0.05). Conclusions The change of PRL concentration was similar to the PRLR mRNA expression level in preovulatory follicles. These results suggest that the PRL mediated by the PRLR plays a stimulatory role in the SWF to SYF transition.

The impacted lithotripter basket combined with a fracture of the traction wire is a rare complication of endoscopic stone removal. We were able to pull the impacted basket using an Amplatz goose-neck snare inserted via the percutaneous transhepatic route, which resulted in the freeing of the entrapped stone into the dilated supra-ampullary bile duct. The fractured traction wire and basket could be safely removed by pulling the traction wire from the mouth. The present report is the first to describe the safe and effective use of an Amplatz goose-neck snare for the management of a lithotripter basket impacted with a stone and a fractured traction wire.

Botulismo é uma intoxicação causada pela ingestão das toxinas produzidas pelo Clostridium botulinum, que acomete mamíferos e aves, caracterizando-se por um quadro de paralisia flácida. Neste trabalho, é descrito um caso de botulismo em ganso, ocorrido no município de Santa Luzia, região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte, no Estado de Minas Gerais. Ao exame clínico, o animal apresentava-se com um quadro de paralisia flácida dos músculos do pescoço, das pernas e asas, além de apresentar ainda desprendimento de penas. A necropsia não revelou lesões significativas. Foi colhido o soro do animal e submetido ao teste de soroneutralização em camundongo, que identificou a toxina de C. botulinum tipo C.
Botulism is an intoxication caused by the ingestion of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum, that affects mammals and birds, characterized by a flaceid paralysis. This report describes a case of botulism in a goose in Santa Luzia, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Clinical examinations showed dropping feathers and flaccid paralysis involving the muscles of the wings, legs and neck. post-mortem examination showed no significant gross or macroscopic lesions C. botulinum type C toxin was demonstrated in the serum of the affected animal through serum neutralization test in mice.

A H5N2 subtype avian influenza virus isolated from goose belongs to highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, and the intravenous pathogenicity indexes (IVPI) =2.99. But ducks are not sensitive to this isolated influenza virus. The virus can infect mouse but only replicates in lung and has no pathogenicity. HA and NA gene of this isolated strain share 99.4% and 99.8% nucleotide sequence identity to the HA gene of A/chicken/Hubei/ 489/2004 (H5N1) and the NA gene of A/chicken/Jilin/53/01 (H9N2), and share 99.3% and 99.6% amino acid sequence identity to the HA protein of A/chicken/Hubei/489/2004 (H5N1), A/swan/Guangxi/307/2004 (H5N1), A/wild duck/ Guangdong/314/2004(H5N1), A/chicken/Henan/210/2004(H5N1) and the NA protein of A/chicken/ Jilin/53/01 (H9N2). There are several continuous basic amino acids (-RRRKKR-) at the cleavage site of HA protein. Phylogenetic trees analysis of HA and NA gene suggests that the isolated influenza virus probably originated from the reassortment of H5N1 and H9N2 subtype influenza virus.

For the immediate proper respiratory care of a delivered newborn, the face is wiped immediately, and the mouth and nares should be suctioned. A soft rubber syringe or soft rubber catheter is suitable for suctioning. If respirations are infrequent, suction of the mouth and pharynx serves to stimulate breathing. We experienced a case of a foreign body in the distal esophagus and stomach when the proximal catheter from a DeLee trap catheter was accidentally separated during neonatal repiratory care. Removal of foreign bodies with use of a goose neck snare system is a good retrieval procedure because of its excellent torque control, positive grasping capacity, excellent radioopacity, lack of traumatic effect, and availability in different sizes. We removed the displaced catheter successfully with an Amplatz goose neck snare.

PURPOSE: To valuate the value of goose neck snare in removal of foreignbody in endovascular system. METHODS & MATERIAL: Foreignbody removal in endovascular system using goose neck snare were done in 4 cases. In one case, a broken guide-wire was located in left subclaviar vein and in three cases, guide-wires were located in vena cava. RESULTS: Technical success was achieved in all four cases. CONCLUSION: Goose neck snare technique is safe and effective in removal of Foreignbody in endovascular system.
