RESUMEN

Abstract: Aim: Sufficient polymerization remains as crucial for composites to prevent discoloration. Both LEDs and halogen units are used for polymerization and different curing modes are improved to overcome inadequate polymerization. This in vitro study investigated staining susceptibility of a nano-hybrid resin composite light-cured in different modes and immersed in different staining media. Methods: Disc-shaped specimens were prepared from nano-hybrid resin composite (Filtek Z550) and light- cured according to following modes: Halojen (GI), LED standard (GII), LED pulse (GIII) or LED ramp (GIV). Half of the specimens of each group (n=7) were stored in one of the staining media (red wine or coffee) for 10 min/day during experimental period. Measurements were performed using spectrophotometer according to CIEL*a*b system at baseline and on 7, 28 and 56 days. Colour differences (∆E) between groups were submitted to statistical analysis. Results: Regarding 7-day evaluation, colour change values of specimens immersed in coffee revealed no remarkable difference among curing modes (p>0.05); whereas specimens in GIV were significantly less stained compared to specimens in GII and GIII when immersed in red wine. Regarding 56- days of evaluation, specimens of GIV showed statistically significant colour change in red wine compared to other groups. However specimens in GI revealed the least staining after 56-days of coffee immersion, and this result was statistically different from LED groups. Conclusion: This study suggest that light-curing mode influences the staining susceptibility of the tested composite. Composites polymerized with halogen unit showed lower staining than all LED modes. Despite novel light sources, halogen units may still used reliably at clinics.

Current evidence indicates that the minimum light intensity of photo curing units required to polymerize in a reliable way a composite resin, in increments of 2mm, is 300mW/cm2. The recent introduction of new generations of composite resin materials for large volume increments, partially contrasts with ISO 4049 (2009), calling for the use of light intensity of 1,000mW/cm2. Therefore, it is considered relevant to carry out periodic measurements of the emission intensity of light-curing units of clinical use. The aim of this study was to test the intensity [mW/cm2] of a representative sample of tungsten-halogen and LED photopolymerization units used in private and public health service in different areas of the Valparaíso Region in Chile. This was achieved through the use of dental radiometers, without considering the variables of intensity modification over time (either spontaneously, by undesirable inherent characteristics of the device, or by programs of intensity modification in time), or the density of accumulated power needed. This in vitro diagnostic test, evaluated a sample of 507 units, 107 halogen and 400 LED, for a period of around one month, using two radiometers as measuring instruments. For LED units the Bluephase Meter® radiometer, from Ivoclar-VivadentTM was used, and for halogen units we used the Coltolux® from ColténeTM. As a result, 85% of the LED and halogen units achieved the minimum requirements of intensity needed for the polymerization of conventional dental biomaterials. However, only 25% from the tested units achieved a power density of 1,000mW/cm2.

RESUMEN

Fluorinated compounds, which now make up 20%-25% of all marketed chemical drugs, are playing significant role and showing great potential in medicinal chemistry. Fluorine substitution is always utilized to change the physicochemical properties of the compounds to improve the ADME/T properties. In addition, fluorine substitution leads to improvement of the ligand binding affinity. With respect to molecular level, organofluorine can form various intermolecular interactions with the target proteins, e.g., hydrogen bond, halogen bond, C-F…π interaction, polar interaction and so on. These interactions display unique properties or nature due to the specificity of fluorine atom, which are at the center of attention. This paper reviews the related research background, followed by the research progress of hydrogen bond, halogen bond, C-F…π interaction, polar interaction and some other interactions involved organofluorine.

It is known that the heat is realeased during light-curing of dental materials, either by the light emitting source or by the polymerization reaction of the compound used. This temperature increase is transmitted to tissues, which may have an effect on them. Due to this, a comparative study of the temperature reached during the sealing and reconstruction of teeth In vitro was performed, using light-curing lamps from the type quartztungsten- halogen (QTH), LED and lamps formed by 4 LEDs, analyzing their programming: Ramp Mode, Intermittent Mode, and normal: and clinical guidelines are proposed in order to reduce potential thermal risks to the pulp and supporting tissues

RESUMEN

The effect of thickness, shade and translucency of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate glass-ceramic on light transmission of light-emitting diode (LED) and quartz-tungsten-halogen units (QTH) were evaluated. Ceramic IPS e.max CAD shades A1, A2, A3, A3.5, high (HT) and low (LT) translucency were cut (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm). Light sources emission spectra were determined. Light intensity incident and transmitted through each ceramic sample was measured to determine light transmission percentage (TP). Statistical analysis used a linear regression model. There was significant interaction between light source and ceramic translucency (p=0.008) and strong negative correlation (R=-0.845, p<0.001) between ceramic thickness and TP. Increasing one unit in thickness led to 3.17 reduction in TP. There was no significant difference in TP (p=0.124) between shades A1 (ß1=0) and A2 (ß1=-0.45) but significant reduction occurred for A3 (ß1=-0.83) and A3.5 (ß1=-2.18). The interaction QTH/HT provided higher TP (ß1=0) than LED/HT (ß1=-2.92), QTH/LT (ß1=-3.75) and LED/LT (ß1=-5.58). Light transmission was more effective using halogen source and high-translucency ceramics, decreased as the ceramic thickness increased and was higher for the lighter shades, A1 and A2. From the regression model (R2=0.85), an equation was obtained to estimate TP value using each variable ß1 found. A maximum TP of 25% for QTH and 20% for LED was found, suggesting that ceramic light attenuation could compromise light cured and dual cure resin cements polymerization.

Aim: To report the “do it yourself” method of converting an existing wired‑halogen indirect ophthalmoscope (IO) to a wireless‑light emitting diode (LED) IO and report the preferences of the patients and the ophthalmologists. Subjects and Methods: In this prospective observational study, a conventional IO was converted to wireless‑LED IO using easily available, affordable electrical components. Conventional and the converted IO were then used to perform photo‑stress test and take the feedback of subjects and the ophthalmologists regarding its handling and illumination characteristics. Results: The cost of conversion to wireless‑LED was 815/‑ rupees. Twenty‑nine subjects, mean age 34.3 ± 10 years with normal eyes were recruited in the study. Between the two illumination systems, there was no statistical difference in the magnitude of the visual acuity loss and the time to recovery of acuity and the bleached vision on photo‑stress test, although the visual recovery was clinically faster with LED illumination. The heat sensation was more with halogen illumination than the LED (P = 0.009). The ophthalmologists rated wireless‑LED IO higher than wired‑halogen IO on the handling, examination comfort, patient’s visual comfort and quality of the image. Twenty‑two (81%) ophthalmologists wanted to change over to wireless‑LED IO. Conclusions: Converting to wireless‑LED IO is easy, cost‑effective and preferred over a wired‑halogen indirect ophthalmoscope.

RESUMEN

Objective: This study assessed the Vickers hardness (VHN) provided by two LCUs when using (1) direct and indirect light-curing techniques, (2) 40 and 60 s and (3) top and bottom surfaces. Material & Methods: One halogen Curing Light 2500 (3M Espe) and one LED (MM Optics) were used by direct and indirect (0,1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mm of dental structure) techniques during 40 and 60 s. The samples were made with FiltekTM Z250 in a metallic mould with a central orifice (4 mm in diameter, 2 mm in thickness). The samples were stored in dry mean by ± 24 h and the hardness measurements were performed in a testing machine (Buehler MMT-3 digital microhardness tester Lake Bluff, Illinois USA). A 50 gf load was used and the indenter with a dwell time of 30 s. The data were submitted to multiple ANOVA and Newman-Keuls‘s test (p < 0.05). Results: Halogen LCU exhibited higher Vickers hardness values than LED mainly because of the power density used. Hardness values were influenced by LCUs, lightcuring techniques, irradiation times and surfaces. For both LCUs, hardness values were found to decrease with indirect light-curing technique, mainly for the bottom surface. Samples irradiated for 60 s exhibited higher hardness values when the halogen LCU was used. For 60 s, the VHN values were statistically significant greater than 40 s. Significant differences in top and bottom surfaces Vickers hardness number (VHN) values were observed among different LCUs used 40 and 60 s. Conclusion: The LCUs, lightcuring techniques, variations of irradiation times, and surfaces (top and bottom) influence the composite resin hardness.

Light intensity output is one of the determinants for adequate curing of visible light-cured materials. The aim of this survey was to evaluate the light intensity outputs (LIOs) of light curing units (LCUs) in dental clinics of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) and School of Dental Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The respective LIOs of all functioning Quartz Tungsten Halogen (QTH) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) LCUs were tested using two light radiometers. For cordless LED LCUs, the testing procedure was done in situ and after being fully charged. Statistical analysis using Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon signed ranks tests were performed to compare the LIOs between groups and between the LIOs of in situ and post-charged cordless LED LCUs, respectively. The level of significance was set at 0.05 (p<0.05). The results revealed that 72.72%, 42.47% and 92% of QTH, cabled LED and cordless LED LCUs exhibited acceptable LIOs, respectively. Data analysis using Kruskal Wallis test showed a statistically significant difference between groups (p<0.05). The intergroup comparisons using multiple Mann Whitney test with Bonferroni correction revealed a significant difference between the LIOs of cordless LED and both QTH and cabled LED (p<0.017). The difference between the LIOs of in situ and post charged cordless LED LCUs was also significant (p<0.05). In conclusion, both QTH and cordless LED LCUs performed better in term of LIOs than cabled LED LCUs. Periodic testing of LCUs is essential to ensure optimal performance.

RESUMEN

Context: The effect of different curing units on bond strength of orthodontic brackets is still unclear when utilizing nanofilled composites in comparison with traditional Transbond-XT. Aim: To evaluate the influence of two adhesive promoters and two curing-light units on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets. Settings and Design: The factors under study were adhesive promoters (nanofilled composite - Filtek-Z350 flowable restorative and conventional orthodontic adhesive - Transbond XT) and curing-light units (halogen lamp - Ultralux and LED device - Radii-Call). Material and Methods: Forty lower bovine incisors were utilized. The teeth were distributed in four groups (n = 10) according to the combination between adhesive promoters and curing-light units. Scotchbond Multipurpose-Plus and Transbond-XT primer were used to bond Filtek-Z350 Flowable Restorative and Transbond-XT, respectively. After storage in distilled water for 24 h, the brackets were subjected to SBS test at a speed of 0.5 mm/min until bracket debonding. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was assigned at fractured specimens. Statistical analysis used: Analysis of variance and Tukey test were utilized. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare ARI scores between the groups (p<0.05). Results: There was statistically significant difference between the adhesive promoters tested. Transbond-XT showed higher SBS means than Filtek-Z350. There was no statistically significant difference between both curing-light units tested in this study, neither between ARI scores. Conclusions: The conventional orthodontic adhesive presented higher bond strength than the nanofilled composite, although both materials interacted similarly to the teeth. The curing-light devices tested did not influence on bond strength of orthodontic brackets.

RESUMEN

Pulp and paper industry is one of the major sources of man-made generation of organochlorine compounds. During biological treatment of wastewater, part of organochlorine compounds is discharged with treated effluent and part is retained on biomass and disposed of as waste activated sludge. Due to presence of these compounds, the disposal of biosludge from pulp and paper industry has become an issue. The estimation of adsorbable organic halogen (AOX) compounds after drying and grinding resulted in 49% lower concentration of AOX due to stripping of purgeable compounds. These purgeable compounds are not released at 60oC in aqueous medium during estimation of purgeable organic halogen (POX) compounds. Dispersion of sludge by sonication overcomes the loss of POX compounds and results in higher concentration of AOX compounds. The drying of biosludge samples at 45, 100 oC and in presence of sun light resulted in 20.1, 49.0 and 29.6% removal of purgeable AOX compounds, respectively. The lab scale sorption study using dichloromethane (as volatile organochlorine compound) reveal that biosludge from pulp and paper industry is a good adsorbent of volatile organochlorine compounds and results in poor release of these compounds during estimation of POX compounds.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is to verify the influence of light curing type on retention force of direct technique and direct-indirect technique.Forty bovine single root teeth with 12mm length were used in this study. Roots were endodontically treated and randomly divided into four groups according to the light curing unit and the technique used: group HD (direct technique, halogen lamp), group LD (direct technique, LED), group HI (direct-indirect technique, halogen lamp), group LI (direct-indirect technique, LED). Retention force was determined using a Universal Testing Machine (Instron). All data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s test. After the test, failure was examined and classified according to the fracture place: post/ resin; resin/dentin; mix. Group HI (246.05N ± 29.51) and LI (241.60N ± 28.95) did not show difference statistically but presented higher retention force than group HD (142.30N ± 25.60) and LD (178.56N ± 25.67). Most of fracture occurred in interface between dentin/resin. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that adhesive cementation technique influenced in the retention of glass fiber post

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using erythrosine and a halogen light source to treat a biofilm formed on a machined surface titanium disk in vivo. Ten volunteers carried an acrylic appliance containing six machined surface titanium disks on the upper jaw over a period of five days. After the five days of biofilm formation period, the disks were removed. PDT using 20 microM erythrosine and halogen light was then applied to the biofilms formed on the disks. Experimental samples were divided into a negative control group (no erythrosine and no irradiation), E0 group (erythrosine 60s + no irradiation), E30 group (erythrosine 60s + halogen light 30s), and E60 group (erythrosine 60s + halogen light 60s). Following PDT, the bacteria in the biofilm were found to be detached from each disk. Each suspension with detached bacteria were diluted and cultivated on a blood-agar plate for five days under anaerobic conditions. The cultivated bacterial counts in the E60 group were significantly lower than the control group (86.4%) or E0 group (76.7%). In the experimental groups also, the light exposure time and bacterial counts showed a negative correlation. In conclusion, PDT using erythrosine and halogen light has bactericidal effects on biofilms formed on a titanium disk in vivo. Notably, applying 20 microM erythrosine and 60 seconds of halogen light irradiation had a significantly potent effect.

RESUMEN

Purpose: With the introduction of photosensitive (light-activated) restorative materials in orthodontics, various methods have been suggested to enhance the polymerization of the materials used, including use of more powerful light curing devices. Bond strength is an important property and determines the amount of force delivered and the treatment duration. Many light-cured bonding materials have become popular but it is the need of the hour to determine the bonding agent that is the most efficient and has the desired bond strength. Aim: To evaluate and compare the shear bond strengths of five different orthodontic light cure bonding materials cured with traditional halogen light and low-intensity light-emitting diode (LED) light curing unit. Materials and Methods: 100 human maxillary premolar teeth, extracted for orthodontic purpose, were used to prepare the samples. 100 maxillary stainless steel bicuspid brackets of 0.018 slot of Roth prescription, manufactured by D-tech Company, were bonded to the prepared tooth surfaces of the mounted samples using five different orthodontic bracket bonding light-cured materials, namely, Enlight, Fuji Ortho LC (resin-modified glass ionomer cement), Orthobond LC, Relybond, and Transbond XT. The bond strength was tested on an Instron Universal testing machine (model no. 5582). Results: In Group 1 (halogen group), Enlight showed the highest shear bond strength (16.4 MPa) and Fuji Ortho LC showed the least bond strength (6.59 MPa) (P value 0.000). In Group 2 (LED group), Transbond showed the highest mean shear bond strength (14.6 MPa) and Orthobond LC showed the least mean shear bond strength (6.27 MPa) (P value 0.000). There was no statistically significant difference in the shear bond strength values of all samples cured using either halogen (mean 11.49 MPa) or LED (mean 11.20 MPa), as the P value was 0.713. Conclusion: Polymerization with both halogen and LED resulted in shear bond strength values which were above the clinically acceptable range given by Reynolds. The LED light curing units produced comparable shear bond strength to that of halogen curing units.

Introduction: Malignant hyperthermia is a hereditary myopathy caused by a rianodine receptor disorder of rugous sarcoplasmic reticulum of the skeletal muscle becomes clear in patients oversensitive to exposition to halogen agents or to succinylcholine. Objective: To present the course of patient presenting with a severe hyperpyrexia after a heart surgery. Clinical case: Patient aged 56 programmed for an aortic valvular replacement, ASA III, functional class NYHA-II-III without other backgrounds. At her arrival to Postperative Intensive Care Unit (POICU) it was noted a significant widespread muscular contracture mainly in masseter muscles, a progressive increase of the arterial CO2 (105 mm Hg), metabolic acidosis, low paO2/FiO2 relations, urine of red wine color, hyperpotassemia, sinus tachycardia with frequent early ventricular contractions, self-limited of ventricular tachycardia, a sever and low cardiac output and sustained hyperpyrexia if 41°C taking measures related to symptoms. At 8 hours fever decreased with restoration of internal environment, urine color cleared, hemodynamics was stable verifying a rise of serum creatinine which decreased progressively after few days. At 48 hours patient was weaned of the mechanical ventilation. At 5 days she was discharged from the POICU. Conclusions: Apart from there were not specific tests to malignant hyperthermia, it is a complex case presenting with a severe hyperpyrexia and a satisfactory course.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To determine the influence of the light curing units on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two premolars were divided into six groups (n=12): Group I: brackets bonded with Transbond and polymerization with halogen light; Group II: Transbond and LED; Group III: Fuji Ortho and halogen light; Group IV: Fuji Ortho and LED; Group V: Fuji Ortho, without acid and halogen light; Group VI: Fuji Ortho, without acid and LED. The groups were tested to shear strength in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS: The composite resin presented higher shear bond strength than the resin-modified glass ionomer cement (p<0.05). The halogen light and LED sources produced similar shear bond strength (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The shear bond strength was influenced by the material but not by the light-curing unit. The use of LED reduced the experimental time by approximately 60 percent, with the same curing efficiency.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to measure the power density of light curing units transmitted through resin inlays fabricated with direct composite (Filtek Z350, Filtek Supreme XT) and indirect composite (Sinfony). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A3 shade of Z350, A3B and A3E shades of Supreme XT, and A3, E3, and T1 shades of Sinfony were used to fabricate the resin inlays in 1.5 mm thickness. The power density of a halogen light curing unit (Optilux 360) and an LED light curing unit (Elipar S10) through the fabricated resin inlays was measured with a hand held dental radiometer (Cure Rite). To investigate the effect of each composite layer consisting the resin inlays on light transmission, resin specimens of each shade were fabricated in 0.5 mm thickness and power density was measured through the resin specimens. RESULTS: The power density through the resin inlays was lowest with the Z350 A3, followed by Supreme XT A3B and A3E. The power density was highest with Sinfony A3, E3, and T1 (p < 0.05). The power density through 0.5 mm thick resin specimens was lowest with dentin shades, Sinfony A3, Z350 A3, Supreme XT A3B, followed by enamel shades, Supreme XT A3E and Sinfony E3. The power density was highest with translucent shade, Sinfony T1 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Using indirect lab composites with dentin, enamel, and translucent shades rather than direct composites with one or two shades could be advantageous in transmitting curing lights through resin inlays.

The arm of this study is to evaluate optical properties (fluorescence and Absorbance) of a composite resin (4 SEASONS®) using light curing units (LCUs)-(QTH - Ulttralux DabiAtlant and LEDs Radii SDI and Ultralume Led 5- Ultradent) in function of LCUs, shade, thickness and storage times. 5 samples were prepared for each experimental group. To perform the Absorbance test, was used of UV-Vis spectrophotometer (Diode Array Spectrophotometer, HP Serial Number: 8452-A). To obtain the fluorescence emission by samples, we used a spectrophotometer (SPEX TRIAX FLUOROLOG 3, Jobin Yvon Serial Number: 0135B-3-99). The results were deemed statistically as the interaction between the evaluation factors in the different works. It can be concluded that the LCUs only influenced the fluorescent emission of resin color TC, having no negative effect on the absorbance; the increase in thickness of the sample decrease the fluorescent emission and absorbance for colors of the resin, independent of the LCUs; different colors of resin exhibited different fluorescent emission and absorbance
