Abstract This study assessed the anthelminthic feed additive albendazole effect on the main indicators of the quality of sheep meat obtained from infected and deworming animals. A total of 20 heads of Akzhaik meat and wool sheep (i.e. 2 years of age, of different sex) were used in a 20-day experiment and 2 groups of 10 heads were formed (n = 4). The sheep were fed with the basic diet (i.e. control, group CON), without adding anything, and the second group was fed the basic diet orally with the addition of a dose of 1.2 g / head (an experimental group). At the end of the experiment, a control slaughter was carried out from each group in order to study the biochemical composition of meat and its quality. The anthelmintic feed additive albendazole did not have a significant effect on the indicators (organoleptic and physicochemical) of meat quality (P> 0.04). However, the ratio of fat and ash in the meat of the control group has differences in indicators and is reduced by 24.81% and 0.03%, respectively. The drug had a significant effect on the biological value of meat in the experimental group, where there is a higher content of essential amino acids (P = 0.06), nonessential (P = 0.05) concentrations in comparison with the CON groups. The results obtained show that the meat of the experimental groups of sheep, when using the anthelminthic feed additive albendazole, did not have a significant effect on organoleptic parameters, but significantly positively influenced the metabolism, live weight gain and biological value of meat.


Resumo Este estudo avaliou o efeito do aditivo anti-helmíntico albendazol sobre os principais indicadores de qualidade da carne ovina obtida de animais infectados e desparasitados. Um total de 20 cabeças de carne Akzhaik e ovelhas de lã (ou seja, 2 anos de idade, de sexo diferente) foi usado em um experimento de 20 dias e dois grupos de 10 cabeças foram formados (n = 4). As ovelhas foram alimentadas com dieta básica (ou seja, controle, grupo CON), sem adicionar nada, e o segundo grupo foi alimentado com dieta básica por via oral com a adição de uma dose de 1,2 g / cabeça (um grupo experimental). Ao final do experimento, foi realizado um abate controle de cada grupo para estudar a composição bioquímica da carne e sua qualidade. O aditivo anti-helmíntico albendazol não teve efeito significativo sobre os indicadores (organolépticos e físico-químicos) de qualidade da carne (P > 0,04). No entanto, a proporção de gordura e cinzas na carne do grupo de controle tem diferenças nos indicadores e é reduzida em 24,81% e 0,03%, respectivamente. A droga teve efeito significativo sobre o valor biológico da carne no grupo experimental, onde há maior teor de aminoácidos essenciais (P = 0,06), concentrações não essenciais (P = 0,05) em comparação com os grupos CON. Os resultados obtidos mostram que a carne dos grupos experimentais de ovinos, ao utilizar o aditivo anti-helmíntico albendazol, não teve efeito significativo nos parâmetros organolépticos, mas influenciou positivamente de forma significativa no metabolismo, ganho de peso vivo e valor biológico da carne.

Resumen Introducción: la pediculosis capitis (PC) es una ectoparasitosis que afecta la piel, el cuero cabelludo y el pelo, cuyo agente etiológico es el Pediculus humanus capitis. La PC afecta principalmente a la población pediátrica y puede tener repercusiones psicosociales severas. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la prevalencia y las variables asociadas a PC en escolares de tres instituciones de educación primaria de Caloto, Cauca, Colombia. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo de corte transversal realizado en 279 niños de 3-12 años entre enero y febrero de 2019. Se realizó un examen físico del cuero cabelludo de los estudiantes para identificar ninfas y piojos adultos, y se aplicó una encuesta a uno de sus padres o tutor legal. Se realizó un análisis bivariado por medio de las pruebas chi cuadrado o exacta de Fisher, para establecer la asociación entre las variables de interés y la presencia de PC, calculándose los OR con sus respectivos intervalos de confianza (IC) del 95 % y un nivel de significancia estadística de p<0,05. Resultados: la prevalencia de PC fue de 17,56 %. Las variables que se asociaron significativamente con la presencia de PC fueron ser de sexo femenino, tener entre 8 y 12 años de edad, lavarse el pelo interdiario, tener pelo largo, tener antecedente de PC y tener prurito del cuero cabelludo. Conclusiones: la PC está presente en los estudiantes de Caloto. Es necesario aplicar estrategias de prevención y control.


Abstract Introduction: pediculosis capitis (PC) is an ectoparasitosis that affects the skin, scalp and hair, and its etiologic agent is Pediculus humanus capitis. PC mainly affects pediatric population and can have severe psychosocial repercussions. This study was aimed to determine the prevalence and variables associated to PC in schoolchildren attending three primary schools in Caloto, Cauca, Colombia. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional study conducted in 279 children (aged 3 to 12) between January and February 2019. A physical examination of the children's heads was performed to identify nymphs and adult lice, and a survey was administered to one of their parents or their legal guardians. A bivariate analysis was carried out using chi-square or Fisher's exact tests to establish the association between the variables of interest and the presence of PC, calculating the ORs with their respective 95 % confidence intervals (CI) and a statistical significance level of p<0,05. Results: the prevalence of PC was 17,56 %. The following variables were significantly associated with the presence of PC: being female, being between 8 and 12 years of age, washing the hair every other day, having long hair, having a history of PC and having scalp pruritus. Conclusions: PC remains a health problem in rural schoolchildren. It is necessary to apply prevention and control strategies.

Objective:To investigate the short-term efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy in patients with allergic rhinitis of all ages.Methods:The data of 230 patients with allergic rhinitis of all ages who received sublingual immunotherapy in The Third People's Hospital of Bengbu from November 2020 to September 2021 were included in this study. Patient distribution characteristics were analyzed. Ninety-three patients were randomly selected and divided into child, adolescent, and adult groups according to different ages. Total nasal symptom scores measured before and 4 months after sublingual immunotherapy were compared among patients of different ages to evaluate the short-term efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy. The skin prick test was used to determine the allergic state of patients. Change in total nasal symptom score after treatment relative to that before treatment was used to evaluate the efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy.Results:The age range of patients receiving sublingual immunotherapy was large (3-71 years), but the average age was only 17.70 years. Ninety-three patients were followed up, including 50 children and 43 adolescents or adults. After 4 months of sublingual immunotherapy, total nasal symptom score in children and adolescents or adults were significantly decreased compared with those before treatment [(3.66 ± 1.69) points vs. (6.60 ± 1.96) points, (3.49 ± 1.72) points vs. (6.28 ± 2.28) points, both P < 0.001]. Before and after treatment, there was no significant difference in total nasal symptom score between children and adolescents or adults (both P > 0.05). Conclusion:Patients with allergic rhinitis who receive sublingual immunotherapy tend to be young. Short-term sublingual immunotherapy is effective for allergic rhinitis. There is no remarkable difference in the efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy between patients with allergic rhinitis of all ages.

Resumen Introducción: La relación parásito-hospedero entre Dendroctonus y Pinus es reconocida como una amenaza importante para los bosques de coníferas, debido a que puede causar una alta mortalidad de árboles y consecuentemente una pérdida de cobertura forestal. Objetivo: Identificar potenciales interacciones parásito-huésped entre descortezadores y pinos, así como la contribución de las condiciones ambientales para el establecimiento de estas interacciones ecológicas. Métodos: Se realizaron modelos de nicho ecológico y análisis de redes ecológicas con la plataforma web de minería de datos espaciales SPECIES (http://species.conabio.gob.mx/). Se incluyeron siete especies de descortezadores, 52 de pinos y 19 variables bioclimáticas del portal WorldClim. Resultados: Se identificaron 140 interacciones potenciales, de las cuales el 42 % no han sido registradas previamente. El análisis de redes ecológicas nos permitió caracterizar las relaciones parásito-hospedero en generalistas y especialistas. En cuanto al análisis de nicho ecológico, se determinó la distribución potencial de los descortezadores combinando las distribuciones de Pinus y variables climáticas como predictores. Se observó que las variables climáticas contribuyen de forma negativa para la mayoría de las especies de Dendroctonus, es decir, estas variables son restrictivas en casi toda su distribución, por el contrario, las variables bióticas (Pinus) fueron positivas e informativas sobre la mayoría de las distribuciones. Conclusiones: Los patrones de coexistencia de descortezadores y pinos nos proporcionan información sobre las interacciones que se pueden establecer entre estas especies y que hasta hoy pueden ser desconocidas. Además, la integración de factores bióticos (hospederos) y abióticos (clima), permite obtener modelos de distribución geográfica que caracteriza las regiones con condiciones favorables para la presencia de las especies, así como las especies de hospederos con los que podrían estar interactuando en dichas regiones. Considerando el riesgo fitosanitario por descortezadores, nuestros resultados brindan escenarios geográficos y ecológicos de riesgo donde infestaciones por descortezadores podrían darse, así como la posible emergencia de nuevas interacciones parásito-hospedero desconocidas hasta hoy. Estos modelos son una herramienta que en el futuro pueden dirigir esfuerzos de trabajo de campo para validar y complementar nuestros resultados.


Abstract Introduction: The parasite-host relationship between bark beetles of the genus Dendroctonus and species of the genus Pinus has been recognized as important threat to coniferous forests because it can cause high tree mortality and therefore a loss of forests. Objectives: We aimed to identify the potential unknown parasite-host relationships among bark beetles and pine trees species, as well as the contribution of environmental conditions as driver of these ecological interactions. Methods: We carried out ecological niche models and ecological network analysis using the spatial datamining platform SPECIES (http://species.conabio.gob.mx/). Our study included seven species of bark beetles, 52 species of the genus Pinus, and 19 bioclimatic variables from Worldclim dataset. Results: We identified 140 potential interactions between Dendroctonus and Pinus species, of which 42 % have not been previously registered. Complex inference network analysis allowed us to characterize ecological parasite-host interactions in generalists and specialists. Regarding the ecological niche analysis, we determined potential bark beetle distributions by combining Pinus species ranges and climatic variables as predictors. We noted that climatic variables contributed negatively to Dendroctonus distribution for the most species, i.e. these abiotic variables are restrictive in almost the entire distribution of the beetles; conversely, biotic variables (i.e. Pinus species) were positive and informative on the most of species ranges. Conclusions: Coexistence patterns of bark beetles and Pinus provide us information on the interactions that are able to establish among these species and that until now can be unknown. In addition, integrating biotic (hosts) and abiotic (climate) factors, allows us to obtain geographic distribution models that characterize the regions with favorable conditions for the presence of bark beetles, as well as the host species with which they could be interacting in those regions. Considering the phytosanitary risk due to bark beetles, our results provide geographic and ecological scenarios where bark beetles infestations may occur, as well as the possible emergence of new parasite-host interactions. These models can be a tool to address future fieldwork efforts to validate and complement our results.

Abstract Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by the helminth Gnathostoma spp., acquired through the consumption of raw or undercooked contaminated aquatic animals.The disease is endemic in Southeast Asia and Central America. Two male patients, both middle-aged, presented with single itchy erythemato-edematous plaques on the anterior thorax and left flank. Both had consumed raw fish in the Amazon region. The clinical and epidemiological examinations suggested gnathostomiasis, and treatment with albendazole caused total regression of the lesions. Health teams should be familiar with the disease to provide correct diagnosis. The control strategy should be based on health education for the population.

RESUMEN Fundamento: la blefaritis es una enfermedad común en la práctica oftalmológica, de curso crónico con crisis de exacerbación y causa multifactorial, a menudo se le asocia a Demodex spp., ácaro del folículo piloso, parásito extendido y frecuente; su infestación en humano se conoce como demodecosis. Objetivo: caracterizar desde el punto de vista clínico a pacientes con blefaritis y demodecosis. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal, en el Hospital Militar Clínico Quirúrgico Docente Dr. Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja de la provincia Camagüey desde septiembre de 2017 a noviembre de 2018. La población objeto de estudio quedó conformada por 84 pacientes con diagnóstico de blefaritis en quienes se confirmó presencia de Demodex spp. que cumplieron criterios definidos por el autor. Se estudiaron variables biológicas (edad y sexo), clínica (síntomas y signos). Los resultados se expusieron en tablas, se utilizó estadística descriptiva para distribuciones de frecuencias. Se respetaron aspectos éticos para investigación en humanos. Resultados: en más de la mitad de los pacientes con diagnóstico de blefaritis se confirmó la presencia de Demodex spp., predominó los enfermos mayores de 61 años, así como del sexo femenino, las manifestaciones clínicas con mayor incidencia fueron: presencia de caspa cilíndrica, alteraciones de las pestaña, escozor y prurito, seguidos por inestabilidad de la película lagrimal, alteraciones de bordes palpebrales, queratitis superficial y sensación de cuerpo extraño. Conclusiones: el estudio demostró la presencia del Demodex spp. en un importante número pacientes con blefaritis lo que contrasta que, en Cuba no existe suficiente literatura documentada que muestre su prevalencia, comportamiento o técnicas diagnósticas, así como variantes terapéuticas eficientes en esta enfermedad.


ABSTRACT Background: the blepharitis is a common illness in the ophthalmological practice, of chronic course with exacerbation crisis and multifactorial etiology, often associated with Demodex spp., mite of the hair follicle, extended and frequent parasite; its infestation in human is known as demodecosis. Objective: to characterize from the clinical point of view patients with blepharitis and demodecosis. Methods: a descriptive, traverse study was carried out in the Educational Surgical Clinical Military Hospital Dr. Octavio of the Concepción and of the Pedraja of Camagüey in the period of September, 2017 to November, 2018. The population study object was conformed by 84 patients with diagnostic of blepharitis who were confirmed with the presence of Demodex spp. and they completed criteria defined by the author. Biological variables were studied (age and sex) and clinic (symptoms and signs). The results were exposed in charts using descriptive statistic for distributions of frequencies. Ethical aspects for investigation in human were respected. Results: in more than half of the patients with diagnostic of blepharitis was confirmed the presence of Demodex spp., the sick persons older than 61 years prevailed, as well as of the feminine sex, the clinical manifestations with more incidence were: presence of cylindrical dandruff, alterations of the lash, smarting and pruritus, continued by uncertainty of the lachrymal movie, alterations palpebral embroider, superficial keratitis and sensation of strange corpse in the eye. Conclusions: the study demonstrates the presence of the Demodex spp. in an important number patient with blepharitis which contrasts with, in Cuba there isn´t enough documented literature that shows their prevalence, behavior or diagnostic techniques, as well as efficient therapeutic variants in this illness.

Resumen Introducción. La infestación por piojos de la cabeza en humanos (Pediculus humanus capitis) se conoce como pediculosis capitis. Estos parásitos pueden ser vectores de enfermedades infecciosas con potencial reemergente. Objetivos. Revisar la literatura actual sobre las enfermedades infecciosas transmitidas por piojos de la cabeza y realizar una breve descripción de sus manifestaciones clínicas. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó una revisión de la literatura en Medline, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar y SciELO mediante la siguiente estrategia de búsqueda: años de publicación: 1938 a 2019; idioma: inglés y español; términos de búsqueda: "Pediculus", "lice infestations", "bacteria", "emerging communicable diseases", "Rickettsia", "Bartonella", "Borrelia", "Acinetobacter", "Yersinia", and "Colombia", y sus equivalentes en español. Resultados. De los 110 artículos incluidos, la mayoría correspondió a investigaciones originales (48.2%). A nivel mundial, numerosos estudios han reportado la transmisión de Rickettsia prowazekii, Bartonella quintana, Borrelia recurrentis, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter bau-manniiy Yersiniapestis, entre otras bacterias, por los piojos de la cabeza y del cuerpo en humanos. Conclusiones. Aunque las enfermedades infecciosas transmitidas por piojos de la cabeza son raras, guardan potencial reemergente en poblaciones afectadas por migraciones humanas, crisis sociopolíticas, indigencia e inmunosupresión. En Colombia no se han realizado investigaciones sobre la transmisión de estas enfermedades por Pediculus spp., por lo que se sugiere que en estudios futuros se determine la prevalencia y los aspectos epidemiológicos de las enfermedades transmitidas por piojos de la cabeza.


Abstract Introduction: Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestation in humans is known as pediculosis capitis. These parasites can be vectors of potentially re-emerging infectious diseases. Objective: To review the current literature on infectious diseases transmitted by head lice and provide a brief description of their clinical manifestations. Materials and methods: A literature review was conducted in the Medline, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and SciELO databases using the following search strategy: Publication time: 1938 to 2019; Publication language: English and Spanish; Search terms: "Pediculus", "lice infestations", "bacteria", "emerging communicable diseases", "Rickettsia", "Bartonella", "Borrelia", "Acinetobacter", "Yersinia", and "Colombia", and their Spanish equivalents. Results: Of the 110 studies included in the review, most of them were original research articles (48.2%). Worldwide, many studies have reported the transmission of Rickettsia prowazekii, Bartonella quintana, Borrelia recurrentis, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii and Yersinia pestis, among other bacteria, by head and body lice in humans. Conclusions. Although infectious diseases transmitted by head lice are rare, they have the potential to become re-emerging infectious diseases in population groups affected by human migration processes, socio-political crises, homelessness, and immunosuppression conditions. In Colombia, so far, there are no studies on the transmission of these bacterial diseases by Pediculus spp., so in future studies the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of human head louse-borne diseases should be determined.

Abstract Gamasoidosis is a poorly known and underdiagnosed mite infestation. It is characterized by the presence of erythematous and flattened papules that are quite pruritic, and can affect any region of the body, with preference for areas of folds. This article reports a case of the disease caused by mites of the species Dermanyssus gallinae. Increasingly, the agents that cause this disease are found in urban environments, increasing the incidence of people affected by the disease. This dermatosis has a self-limiting clinical picture and the treatment is done with the use of topical corticosteroids and oral antihistamines.

Background: Dermatological ailments contribute to one third of outpatient visits in paediatric clinics. Among these, cutaneous infections are found to be the commonest as per various studies. This study was conducted to find out the commonest cutaneous infections in children. Aim was to find out the prevalence of various cutaneous infections in children.Methods: In this study 200 children aged between 1- and 12-years attending outpatient clinic with signs and symptoms suggestive of cutaneous infection were included in the study. History, physical examination and appropriate tests were done to arrive at the diagnosis.Results: Here, 133 children were male and 67 were female. Viral infections were found to be the commonest cutaneous infections and were found in 85 children followed by bacterial infections in 52, fungal infections in 42 and infestations in 21. The presence of high humidity and hot climate in our coastal city along with the prevalent clothing pattern, overcrowding and socio economic factors play a significant role in the type of cutaneous paediatric infection found in that geographical area.Conclusions: Proper hygiene, education and clothing along with avoidance of overcrowding and early medical attention will help to prevent peadiatric cutaneous infections.

Abstract The essential oil of the Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) (tea tree oil) has been effective in previous studies, in the treatment of infestation by Demodex mites in humans. The present study aimed at evaluating the in vitro acaricidal effect of this herbal medicine on Demodex canis. For the parasitological examination, samples were collected from a dog's skin and examined using optical microscopy. Only samples with intact mites and with evident movement of chelicerae and tarsi were selected. Twenty-one samples were tested with the oil, in seven different concentrations: 100%; 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 5.0% and 3.13%. Three samples were tested with the positive control amitraz, and three with the negative control neutral shampoo. The interval between the time the solution was added and the moment the movement of the last mite ceased defined the survival time in the sample. By comparing the times at different concentrations and controls, the results showed that the higher the concentration of the oil, the more quickly its lethal effect occurred, and that the survival times in the controls were longer than in the different concentrations of melaleuca oil.


Resumo O óleo essencial de Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betche) (óleo da árvore do chá) foi eficaz em estudos anteriores, no tratamento da infestação por ácaros Demodex em humanos. O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o tempo do efeito acaricida, in vitro, desse fitoterápico sobre Demodex canis. Para o exame parasitológico, amostras foram coletadas da pele de um cão e examinadas por microscopia óptica. Apenas amostras com ácaros íntegros e com evidente movimentação de quelíceras e tarsos foram selecionadas. Vinte e uma amostras foram direcionadas para teste com o óleo, em sete concentrações diferentes: 100%; 50%; 25%; 12,5%; 6,25%; 5,0% e 3,13%. Três amostras foram testadas com o controle positivo, amitraz, e três com o controle negativo, xampu neutro. O intervalo entre o momento em que a solução foi adicionada e o instante em que cessou o movimento do último ácaro definiu o tempo de sobrevivência na amostra. Os tempos nas diferentes concentrações e nos controles foram comparados. Quanto mais alta a concentração do óleo, mais rapidamente ocorreu seu efeito letal. Os tempos de sobrevivência nos controles foram maiores que nas diferentes concentrações do óleo de melaleuca.

RESUMEN Latungiasisesuna ectoparasitosistransitoria en el ser humano, que se produce a causa de la penetración en la piel de la hembra grávida de la "pulga de arena", Tunga penetrans. También es conocida como "nigua", "bichodopé", "sandflea",entre otras denominaciones. Es una enfermedad endémica en áreas rurales y playas de Centro y Sudamérica, Caribe y África Subsahariana. En Argentina se la encuentra en zonas del Noreste y Mesopotamia. Debido al incremento de los destinos vacacionales a dichas regiones tropicales, comenzaron a observarse casos de tungiasis fuera de las áreas endémicas (casos importados). Comunicamos el caso de una niña argentina, que vacacionó en las playas caribeñas y adquirió la infestación por Tunga penetrans, la cual evolucionó de manera llamativa, manifestando un fenómeno isotópico.


SUMMARY Tungiasis is a transitory ectoparasitosis caused by penetration into the skin of the female flea Tungapenetrans, also known as "nigua", "bichodo pé", or "sand flea". It's an endemic disease that can be found at rural zones, Caribbean beaches and Sub-Saharan Africa. In Argentina, it's distributed in the northeastand Mesopotamia. Because of the increasement of holiday destinations, in these tropical regions, cases of tungiasis were reported outside the endemic areas. People who went to those zones, carried the disease to their birthplaces (imported Infestations). We report the case of a little Argentinian girl who went to a Caribbean beach and acquired the infestation by tungapenetrans, which made its develop in a striking way; showing an isotopic phenomenon.

La pediculosis capitis es la ectoparasitosis más frecuente a nivel mundial. La infestación es causada por Pediculus humanus capitis (piojo de la cabeza) y afecta el cabello, el cuero cabelludo y la piel. Rara vez se manifiesta con otro tipo de sintomatología y, por lo general, su curso es benigno si se trata adecuadamente. Se presenta el caso de una menor con pediculosis capitis de 18 meses de evolución, asociada con forúnculos, lesiones cutáneas, múltiples adenopatías y anemia, que no mejoró tras la aplicación del champú. Inicialmente, llamó la atención la presencia de forúnculos, alopecia y adenopatías. La persistencia de la pediculosis capitis y el rascado intenso alteraron la integridad de la epidermis y facilitaron las infecciones secundarias por bacterias patógenas y oportunistas que produjeron impétigo, forunculosis, excoriaciones, costras hemáticas, anemia, alopecia y linfadenopatías. La pediculosis capitis afectó notoriamente a la paciente al causarle problemas psicológicos y de salud, agudizados por su condición económica y social. La paciente presentó manifestaciones clínicas poco frecuentes (forunculosis, anemia, fiebre, alopecia y adenopatías), lo cual se vio facilitado por la persistencia de los factores de riesgo y el hecho de que no se le inspeccionaba la cabeza ni se removían los insectos. La educación sobre los factores de riesgo y el control sanitario es indispensable para controlar la infestación.


Pediculosis capitis is the most frequent ectoparasitosis around the world. The infestation is caused by Pediculus humanus capitis (head louse), which affects hair, scalp, and skin. It rarely presents with more symptoms and in the majority of the cases, it shows a benign course if treated properly. We present the case of a nursery school girl with head lice infestation for 18 months. She did not improve after the shampoo treatment. This case was associated with furunculosis, skin lesions, multiple adenopathies, and anemia. Initially, the presence of boils, alopecia, and lymphadenopathy was evident. The persistence of pediculosis capitis and intense scratching induced changes on skin integrity, facilitating opportunistic bacterial superinfection that led to impetiginization, furunculosis, excoriations, hematic scabs, anemia, alopecia, and lymphadenopathies. Pediculosis capitis affected the patient triggering psychological, economic, social, and other health problems. The patient presented uncommon symptoms (furunculosis, anemia, fever, alopecia, and adenopathies) resulting from the persistence of risk factors and the absence of head inspection and mechanical removal of insects. The education about the risk factors, as well as sanitary controls, are essential to contain the infestation.

Introduction: Pediculosis Capitis (head lice infestation) is the most common disease of the bloodsucking insect which affects approximately six to twenty million cases and results considerable economic burden annually. In this study we aim to investigate some medieval Persian views on the role of non-pharmacological treatment strategies for prevention and control of pediculosis and compare their prescriptions with current findings. Materials and methods: In this qualitative study, we reviewed some well-known Persian medicine (PM) textbooks based on the selected keywords (Shepesh, Reshk, Ghamal and Seyban) to collect the viewpoint of PM scholars for pediculosis and its treatments. Also, we searched in the databases such as PubMed, Science direct and Scopus about the topic. Results: Persian medicine scientists believed that there are six essential health principles (SetteZaroorieh), which can affect human health and prevent diseases including air, nutrition, exercise, sleep and wakefulness, exertion of unnecessary materials from the body and finally psychological concepts. Proper management of these essential factors can improve lifestyle of people affected with pediculosis and also play a key role in prevention of head lice infestation. Conclusion: There are several suitable recommendations for prevention and control of pediculosis according to essential health principles in PM which can consider beside current drug treatments and the individual health recommendations for complete control of the disease

Resumen Introducción: La rosácea es una enfermedad inflamatoria crónica de la piel que generalmente afecta adultos. Rara vez se ha reportado en niños, aunque ambos subtipos comparten las mismas características clínicas. Caso clínico: Se reporta el caso de una paciente de 10 años de edad con dermostosis que afecta las mejillas y la nariz. La lesión está caracterizada por eritema, pápulas, pústulas, cicatrices de 2 años de evolución, así como conjuntivitis bilateral, blefaritis y opacidad corneal. Presentó exacerbaciones recurrentes de las lesiones cutáneas y síntomas oculares relacionados con la exposición solar. La paciente respondió muy bien a la terapia con antibióticos tópicos y sistémicos. Conclusiones: La rosácea infantil debe distinguirse de otros trastornos faciales eritematosos con mayor frecuencia, como el acné, la dermatitis perioral granulomatosa y la sarcoidosis. La distribución de las lesiones faciales papulopustulares junto con la presencia de telangiectasias, rubor y los hallazgos oculares permiten la diferenciación de la rosácea de otras erupciones faciales.


Abstract Background: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that usually occurs in adults and rarely has been reported in children, although both subtypes share the same clinical characteristics. Case report: A 10-year-old female presented dermostosis on the face, affecting cheeks and nose, characterized by erythema, papules, pustules, scars of two years of evolution, as well as bilateral conjunctivitis, blepharitis and corneal opacity. She referred recurrent exacerbations and partial remission of cutaneous lesions and ocular symptoms related to sun exposure. She responded dramatically to systemic and topical antibiotics. Conclusions: Childhood rosacea should be distinguished from other most common erythematous facial disorders, such as acne, granulomatous perioral dermatitis, and sarcoidosis. The distribution of papulopustular facial lesions together with the presence of telangiectasia, flushing and the ocular findings allow the differentiation of rosacea from other facial eruptions.

Introduction: Skin diseases are encountered quite commonlyin pediatric age group. There is wide variation in the patternand presentation of different skin conditions in children whencompared to adults. The aim of the present study was to studythe pattern and prevalence of dermatoses in the pediatricpopulation and the various etiologies causing them.Material and methods: This study was conducted in theGovernment General Hospital, Vijayawada. 1000 childrenbelow the age of 14 years presenting with skin diseases wereincluded in the study. Clinical diagnosis was made after athorough clinical evaluation and physical examination.Results: Among 1000 cases, 52.5% were males and femalesconstituted 47.5%. Infectious group of diseases (38.6%)were the most common cause of dermatological diseases inthe childhood followed by infestations (19.1%) and eczemas(12.6%). Hypersensitivity disorders (10.2%), diseases ofthe appendages (5.1%) and pigmentary disorders (4.9%)constituted the other important causes.Conclusion: This study provides a gross idea about the patternof skin diseases in children. The most common etiology in thepresent study belonged to infectious origin. Scabies was themost common disease seen. By providing information aboutthe various causative skin diseases in pediatric population, thisstudy helps in devising preventive measures and managementoptions.

RESUMEN Fundamento: las enfermedades dermatológicas, en la edad pediátrica, tienen un alto impacto en la calidad de vida y salud emocional de los pacientes. Objetivo: establecer la prevalencia de enfermedades dermatológicas en pacientes escolares del Consejo Popular Pesquera. Métodos: se realizó un estudio longitudinal, observacional y descriptivo en un universo de 366 escolares, de cinco a nueve años de edad, residentes en el Consejo Popular Pesquera. El seguimiento se realizó en la escuela primaria del consejo y en la consulta municipal de Dermatología durante el curso escolar 2016-2017. Resultados: el 38,80 % de los pacientes presentaron, al menos, una enfermedad dermatológica y de ellas el 53,01 % tenían una base infectocontagiosa. La pediculosis capitis constituyó el 15,84 % del total de enfermedades dermatológicas seguida de las piodermitis (14,21 %). Conclusiones: las enfermedades dermatológicas afectan un tercio de la población escolar del Consejo Popular Pesquera donde las infectocontagiosas son las de mayor prevalencia.


ABSTRACT Background: the dermatological diseases, in the pediatric age, have a high impact in the patients' quality of life and emotional health. Objective: to establish the dermatological diseases prevalence in school patients of the Popular Council Pesquera. Methods: a longitudinal, observational and descriptive study with a universe of 366 students, of 5 to 9 years of age, residents in the Popular Council Pesquera. The following was carried out in the primary school of the council and in the Dermatology municipal consultation during the 2016-2017 academic year. Results: the 38.80% of the patients presented, at least, a dermatological diseases and of them 53.01% had an infectious-contagious base. The pediculosis capitis constituted 15.84 % of the total of dermatological diseases followed by the pyoderma (14.21 %). Conclusions: the dermatological diseases affect a third of the school population of the Popular Council Pesquera being those of infectious-contagious origin those of more prevalence.

Background: Analysis of skin diseases in the pediatric population and its trends reflects the health and nutritional status of a community. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and pattern of skin diseases in children registered at the Dermatology OPD department of Hemawati Nandan Bahuguna Teaching Base Hospital, Srikot over a period of 1 year.Methods: A prospective cross-sectional descriptive analysis was conducted at the Dermatology OPD department of HNB teaching hospital to determine the pattern of dermatoses in children aged 0 days to 17 years, between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018. Cases with incomplete data, non-compliant to treatment and patients whose primary lesions are altered by the application of topical medication, not related to the existing disease were excluded from the study. The results were entered and tabulated in MS-excel sheet and descriptive analysis was done.Results: Out of 23,359 outpatients 6,274 (26.85%) were of a pediatric age with a male to female ratio of 1.2:1. The majority of the children belonged to young teens and teenagers (2377;37. 88%). Majority of pediatric dermatoses belonged to Infectious group (1373;21.88%) followed by Disorders of skin appendages (1087;17.33%) and Infestations (722;11.5%). The three most common diagnoses were Scabies (694;11.06%) followed by Fungal infections (568;10.43%) and Acne vulgaris (398;6. 34%).Conclusions: This study showed the current pattern of pediatric dermatoses in Garhwal region of Uttrakhand with a high frequency of infection and infestations with young teen and teenagers as the identified focus group for the need of intervention.

Background: The prevalence of paediatric skin diseases varies worldwide. Paediatric dermatoses require a separate view from adult dermatoses as there are important differences in clinical presentation, treatment and prognosis. Their characterisation is essential for the preparation of academic, research and health plans. Aim: The study was carried out to find the incidence of skin diseases in children under 15 years of age. Methods: All children below 15 years of age attending dermatology outpatient department for first time were evaluated for various skin dermatoses. Skin diseases were classified into groups like infections and infestations, eczematous, non-infective dermatoses and hypersensitivity reactions. Results: Male children predominated with male female ratio 1.3:1. Infections and infestations were the most common (41.8%) cause of skin dermatoses followed by dermatitis (20.7%), non-infective & autoimmune dermatoses (13.4%) and hypersensitivity reactions seen in 10.8% patients. Miliaria and other physical dermatoses contributed to about 6% of the total cases. Conclusion: Majority of paediatric dermatoses can be grouped into 8 categories. Significant proportion of dermatoses are infectious and eczematous types. Infections are more prevalent in low socio-economic strata and with proper education and creating awareness they can be minimised to a significant extent.
