RESUMEN

Purpose: This randomized, controlled, blinded study evaluates the efficacy of intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy with low?level light therapy (LLLT) in the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and evaporative dry eye (EDE) compared to a control group. Methods: Hundred patients with MGD and EDE were randomized into control (50 subjects, 100 eyes) and study group (50 subjects, 100 eyes). The study group underwent three sittings of IPL with LLLT 15 days apart and were followed up 1 month and 2 months after the last treatment sitting. The control group underwent sham treatment and was followed up at the same intervals. The patients were evaluated at baseline and 1 month and 3 months (post 1st treatment) for dry eye. Schirmer's test and tear breakup time (TBUT), OSDI, meibomian gland expression, and meibography. Results: The study group showed significant improvement in OSDI scores (P < 0.0001) compared to the control group and a significant improvement in TBUT (P < 0.005) compared to the control group. There was no change in schirmer's test and an improvement in the meibomian gland expression but not significant. Conclusion: The results show that a combined therapy of IPL with LLT is effective in treating MGD with EDE compared to controls, and repeated treatment sessions have a cumulative effect on the disease outcomes

RESUMEN

AIM: To systematically evaluate the efficacy of intense pulsed light(IPL)combined with meibomian gland expression(MGX)in the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD)-related dry eye disease(DED).METHODS: Chinese and English databases such as Chinese national knowledge infrastructure(CNKI), Wanfang, VIP, CBM, ClinicalTrials, PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched, and clinical randomized controlled trials(RCTs)using IPL combined with MGX in the experimental group and MGX alone in the control group from January 2017 to September 2022 were included. Six outcome indicators including clinical efficacy, ocular surface disease index(OSDI)score, break-up time(BUT), corneal fluorescein staining(CFS)score, tear meniscus height(TMH)and meibomian gland yielding secretion score(MGYSS)were Meta analyzed by Review Manager 5.3 and Stata 14 software.RESULTS: A total of 15 RCTs were included, with 1 345 patients with MGD-related dry eye. Meta-analysis results showed that the treatment of MGD-related dry eye in the experimental group improved better clinical efficacy(OR=4.95, 95%CI: 2.76~8.90, Z=5.35, P<0.00001), BUT(SMD=1.26, 95%CI: 0.84~1.69, Z=5.78, P<0.00001), TMH(SMD=0.37, 95%CI: 0.15~0.59, Z=3.33, P=0.0009), and reduced OSDI scores(SMD=-0.86, 95%CI: -1.44~-0.27, Z=2.85, P=0.004)as well as MGYSS(SMD=-2.43, 95%CI: -4.31~-0.54, Z=2.52, P=0.01)than the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference in CFS scores(SMD=-0.19, 95%CI: -0.46~0.07, Z=1.43, P=0.15).CONCLUSION: IPL combined with MGX in the treatment of MGD related dry eye can increase the overall effective rate and improve the symptoms and signs of patients with MGD related dry eye better than MGX alone.

RESUMEN

@#“Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic syndrome” (DRESS) is a rare type of “severe cutaneous adverse reaction” (SCAR). We report 3 patients with DRESS who had different presentations. The first case developed DRESS following initiation of Allopurinol a month earlier. He presented with bilateral pseudomembranous conjunctivitis which resolved after 2 weeks. Two months later he presented with bilateral severe meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), ocular surface disease (OSD) with severe dry eyes and left eye corneal perforation. The second case developed DRESS following initiation of allopurinol and had bilateral conjunctivitis. As for the third case, DRESS happened after taking Roxithromycin. She was diagnosed to have bilateral MGD, blepharitis and dry eyes. Case 2 and 3 did not develop ocular long-term complications. DRESS can cause acute and long-term ocular complications and therefore, following up patients with DRESS is essential to treat any complications with the aim to prevent corneal perforation.

RESUMEN

This work was carried out to evaluate the effect of different particle size corn on the performance, egg quality and intestinal morphology of Hisex Brown laying hens. A total of 128 birds were used, in a completely randomized design with four treatments, four replicates and eight birds per experimental unit. Experimental rations had corn with different particle size: 565, 620, 781 and 1085 µm of mean geometric diameter (MGD). Feeding was ad libitum at 8:00 am and 4:00 p.m. The variables analyzed were: feed consumption, laying percentage, egg mass and weight, food conversion (was calculated by dividing the feed consumed by the total egg weight (kg.kg-1) and the number of eggs produced (kg.dozen-1)), shell percentage and thickness, Haugh unit, yolk color index and morphometry analysis of the intestinal mucosa. The use of corn with MGD until to 1085 µm in rations does not affect the performance and eggs quality of Hisex Bronw laying hens. However, there are indications that the intestinal morphometry of laying hens is negatively influenced by the increase in particle size of corn.(AU)

Background: Different target-filter combinations in computed radiography have different impacts on the dose and image quality in digital radiography. This study aims to evaluate the mean glandular dose (MGD) and modulation transfer function (MTF) of various target-filter combinations by investigating the signal intensities of X-ray beams. Methods: General Electric (GE) Senographe DMR Plus mammography unit was used for MGD and MTF evaluation. The measured MGD was compared with the dose reference level (DRL), whereas the MTF was evaluated using ImageJ 1.46o software. A modified Mammography Accreditation Phantom RMI 156 was exposed using different target-filter combinations of molybdenum-molybdenum (Mo-Mo), molybdenum-rhodium (Mo-Rh) and rhodium-rhodium (Rh-Rh) at two different tube voltages, 26 kV and 32 kV with 50 mAs. Results: In the MGD evaluations, all target-filters gave an MGD value of 0.05). Conclusions: Higher tube voltage and atomic number target-filter yield higher MGD values. However, the MTF is independent of the X-ray energy and the type of target-filter combinations used.
