@#AIM: To evaluate and compare the clinical performance of 5 kinds of polyhexamethylene biguanide(PHMB)based multi-purpose solutions(MPS)manufactured in China when used with a commercially available silicone hydrogel contact lens in terms of solution-induced corneal staining(SICS), ocular response(corneal staining and ocular hyperemia), corneal infiltrative events(CIE)and ocular comfort.<p>METHODS: This was a prospective, open label, randomized, parallel group clinical trial. Totally 162 participants who were at least 18y old were enrolled and randomized into 5 groups of PHMB-based MPS made in China: Complete® MPS, Hydron® Aqua-shining moist, BaoshiningTM, Weicon® Fresh, Weicon® 2000 MPS(abbreviated as C, H, B, W, and W2). All participants wore balafilcon A contact lenses with monthly disposal(Bausch & Lomb Purevision®)in conjunction with the designated MPS on a daily wear for 3mo. Clinical visits were at baseline, 2wk, 1 and 3mo. SICS and CIE were reported as first event incidence per 100 Px-months. Ocular response was graded on 0-4 scale in 0.5 steps(0=none, 4=severe)and ocular comfort was assessed <i>via</i> a numeric rating scale(1-10 in 1-point steps, 1=poor, 10=excellent). Ocular comfort and ocular response variables were analysed using linear mixed model. CIE and SICS were analysed using Fisher's exact test and logistic regression. <p>RESULTS: There were 36(22%)Pxs who dropped out. SICS incidence for each MPS were: H(26.3%),B(20.8%), W(19.4%), W2(13.4%), C(12.8%). The SICS rate of H was significantly different to W2(<i>P</i> = 0.012)and C(<i>P</i> = 0.005). There were no significant differences in ocular response, CIE incidence and ocular comfort between different MPSs(<i>P</i>>0.05). Pxs with SICS had significantly lower comfort during the day and at the end of than those who did not have SICS. <p>CONCLUSION: Differences in SICS incidence were found between MPSs but not for CIE incidence, ocular response or ocular comfort. SICS in PHMB-based MPS was found to be associated with ocular discomfort.

Objective To introduce the development of transportable-like multi-purpose body posture tables and observe its clinical application effect. Methods The transportable-like multi-purpose body posture tables were independently designed and manufactured. 120 patients who were to receive thoracentesis were divided into the observation group (odd number) and the control group (even number), with 60 cases in each group. The control group uses the traditional method, while the observation group used the transportable-like multi-purpose body posture table during thoracentesis. Pulses, breath, the artery blood oxygen saturation degree were compared between two groups, at the same time, patient comfort levels and degree of satisfaction were also compared. Results After puncture pulse, breathing and arterial oxygen saturation increased in both groups, but showing significant difference between the two groups. Comfort and satisfaction degree of patients in the observation group was significantly better than the control group. Conclusions Portable multi-position table can reduce patient discomfort and improve patient tolerance of surgery, comfort and satisfaction degree.
RESUMEN
PURPOSE: In this work we designed and made MPBP (Multi Purpose Brachytherapy Phantom). The MPBP enables one to reproduce the same patient set-up in MPBP as the treatment of the patient and we tried to get an exact analysis of rectal doses in the phantom without need of in-vivo dosimetry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dose measurements were tried at a point of rectum 1, the reference point of rectum, with a diode detector for 4 patients treated with tandem and ovoid for a brachytherapy of a cervix cancer. Total 20 times of rectal dose measurements were made with 5 times a patient. The set-up variation of the diode detector was analyzed. The same patient set-ups were reproduced in self-made MPBP and then rectal doses were measured with TLD. RESULTS: The measurement results of the diode detector showed that the set-up variation of the diode detector was the maximum 11.25+/-0.95 mm in the y-direction for Patient 1 and the maximum 9.90+/-2.40 mm, 20.85+/-4.50 mm, and 19.15+/-3.33 mm in the z-direction for Patient 2, 3, and 4, respectively. In analyzing the degree of variation in 3 directions the more variation was showed in the z-direction than x- and y-direction except Patient 1. The results of TLD measurements in MPBP showed the relative maximum error of 8.6% and 7.7% at a point of rectum 1 for Patient 1 and 4, respectively and 1.7% and 1.2% for Patient 2 and 3, respectively. The doses measured at R1 and R2 were higher than those calculated except R point of Patient 2. This can be thought to related to the algorithm of dose calculation, whcih corrects for air and water but is guessed not to consider the correction for the scattered rays, but by considering the self-error (+/-5%) TLD has the relative error of values measured and calculated was analyzed to be in a good agreement within 15%. CONCLUSION: The reproducibility of dose measurements under the same condition as the treatment could be achieved owing to the self-made MPMP and the dose at the point of interest could be analyzed accurately. If a treatment is performed after achieving dose optimization using the data obtained in the phantom, dose will be able to be minimized to important organs.

PURPOSE: To confirm the accuracy of the radiation dose at the isocenter by the standard linear accelerator-based stereotactic radiosurgery technique which was developed at Seoul National University Hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiation dosimetry was undertaken during standard 5-arc radiosurgery using 6 MV X-ray beam from CL2100C linac. The treatment head was attached with circular tertiary collimators of 10 and 20 mm diameter. We measured the absorbed dose at the isocenter of a multi-purpose phantom using two kinds of detector : a 0.125 cc ionization chamber and a silicon diode detector. RESULTS: The dose differences at each arc plane between the planned dose and the measured dose at the isocenter raged from -0.73% to -2.69% with the 0.125 cc ion chamber, and from -1.29% to -2.91% with the diode detector during radiosurgery with the tertiary collimator of 20 mm diameter. Those with the 10-mm tertiary collimator ranged from -2.39% to -4.25% with the diode. CONCLUSION: The dose accuracy at the isocenter was +/-3%. Therefore, further efforts such as modification in processing of the archived image through DICOM3.0 format are required to lessen the dose difference.

PURPOSE: To compare the antimicrobial effects of various kinds of multi-purpose solutions, study effective ways of washing contact lens (CLs), and suggest the most effective lens care system using P. aeruginosa-contaminated CLs. METHODS: Each disposable soft CL was incubated in 0.1 ml of diluted solution of P. aeruginosa standardstrain (10(8)CFU / mm(3)) and 0.9 ml tryptic soy broth in cell culture wells for 24 hours. In the first experimental group, to find the most antimicrobial solution, 40 CLs contaminated by P. aeruginosa were divided into four subgroups washed with four different kinds of multi-purpose solutions. Ten CLs were used in each subgroup and in the control group; Ten CLs contaminated by P. aeruginosa were washed with phosphate buffered saline (PBS) instead of cleaning solution. In the second experiment groups to find the most effective way of washing, using only Renu Multiplus multi-purpose solutionR we compared the antimicrobial effect of four different ways of washing including 30 seconds rubbing, 30 minutes soaking, 4 hours soaking, 30 seconds rubbing and 4 hours soaking. RESULTS: There was no significant difference of antimicrobial effect between four kinds of multi-purpose solutions. All methods have a significant antimicrobial effect over control group (P<0.001) and the most effective method of washing CLs was 4 hours soaking. CONCLUSIONS: we should advise all the soft CL users that they should have their CLs soaked over 4 hours everyday after wearing it.

In the Amazon Basin occur both species of the genus Carapa (Meliaceae). Roba-mahogany is well known for the quality of its timber and the oil extracted from its seeds. The provision of basic information on seed and seedlings to subsidize scientific studies and the propagation and management of these species was the objective of this study. Bio-morphology of the fruits, seeds and seedlings, and a comparative botanical description, allow the distinction of both species. The natural distribution, abundance and phenology are presented, as well as factors which may influence the natural regeneration, as the high seed predation and the infestation by Hypsipyla grandella. Roba-mahogany trees have large seeds (with an average weight of 25 g - C. guianensis and 16 g - C. procera) with a regular fructification. However, there are difficulties in seedling production due to desiccation and chilling sensitivity of the seeds. The thickness of the seed coat may cause dormancy of C. guianensis, which may delay the germination until six months. Seeds of C. procera, which normally have a thinner seed coat need in average only one month to germinate. Nursery practices and planting, as well as the use of these species are commented.
